A Fargo staple since the 1990s, Great Wall moved to its current south-side spot and continues turning out made-to-order Cantonese and Szechuan favorites. Runner-up in the 2024 Best of the Red River Valley and frequently recommended by local publications.

Great Wall Chinese Restaurant

Google
Good food, nice price. Enjoyed their Vegetable Delight and Chicken Vegetable.

Matt W.

Google
Kung Pao Chicken and fried rice. Really glad I stopped, just outstanding!

Evett E.

Google
I had the great pleasure of eating from this amazing Resturant. The wonton soup was amazing so flavorful yet so simple. The orange chicken held so much flavor and balanced out nicely. The fried rice chicken was delicious a bit salty but I mixed it with the regular fried rice and it was perfect. I plan on coming back soon.

Google
The food and owners are really great. The clean environment and friendly people create a relaxing atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back and will recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Fargo-Moorhead area. 10/10

Google
The food was amazing, probably the best hunan chicken I've ever eaten. Fried rice was delicious as well as the crab rangoon and egg rolls. Definitely will be back.

Alexander L.

Google
Very excellent food, slightly longer wait but it was extremely busy. Love the Egg Drop Soup.

Leif S.

Google
Place was empty. There's a big table in the middle of the dining room with heaps of magazines on it. The menu was pretty standard, everything you'd come to expect from a Chinese restaurant. Looks like it's a mom-and-pop place which is charming. The whole atmosphere was a little sterile upon first inspection but the longer I was in here, it was chill. Pictured is the Hunan Beef. Not pictured is the plain Styrofoam cup with ice water I ordered. The fried rice tasted a little different from what I was used to but it was still good. The tables have soy sauce which was a little odd but cool I guess. Overall, you should probably order takeout but this is a good choice for where you're going to eat.

Google
I can't say anything bad about this place. We have been going to this family owned restaurant for a long time, they were still in university drive that time and my kids were still an infant and a 1 year old (15 & 14 now) and we just stumbled this gem by accident. The lady at the counter is so nice (she's the Mom), there's a boy helping in the counter and the kitchen (that's the son), there's noise in the kitchen of someone is cooking ( that's the Dad) and a little girl sitting at booths doing her homework (the daughter). The atmosphere there is just magical to me, it brings me back home, the smell, the noise, the friendly smiles, it made me feel that I just walked in a family restaurant when I was a child. The food is great and it's very close to authentic since they only have to work on whatever ingredients that they can find in the area, food is fresh unlike other places that everything came from a package. They have moved into a different location now, a bigger one, but it's still the best place to go.

Yelp
Food was well prepared. But they are much more expensive now than when they were on University Drive. The menu has shrunk too. Was disappointed at the cost $$$!

Kaye Lynn M.

Yelp
Great Wall has consistently amazing food. The very best Chinese food in Fargo. The portions are huge. It is always 2 meals for both my husband and myself. Veggies are fresh, chicken is always top quality and the fried rice is so tasty!

Bonny V.

Yelp
Simple setting, great, healthy food! They will taylor your entree to your taste..I had Mild Hunan chicken, lots veggies,& not so spicy!
google avatar

Brock B.

Yelp
The Great Wall has been a part of Fargo for years! New location now on 32nd Ave S. Food here is fresh and delicious! They really use only fresh vegetable ingredients for their entrée. A must if you are wanting Chinese cuisine!

Kristine T.

Yelp
Excellent food and friendly atmosphere. My go to Chinese restaurant. I recommend the Kung Pao chicken, Sesame chicken and egg rolls.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Excellent food, service, ambiance! Best Asian food in Fargo 20 yrs and counting! General's Chicken is the best in the region. Fried rice is wonderful too. If planning a family event, look for their family platters - which are an awesome value!
google avatar

Willow T.

Yelp
They provided the food for a business meeting at my work. The food was extremely over-oiled (the vegetables were floating in oil!), and so lacking in flavor that it seemed like the vegetable oil was the only seasoning they used. I would not recommend them.

Wes V.

Yelp
Forgot part of our delivery. Called them, they said they sorry about that and hung up.

Don F.

Yelp
Very disappointing. High prices and tiny portion. I got 1 scoop of steamed rice and 4 pieces of sweet and sour chicken. Also got the pepper steak at a $2 surcharge because apparently beef is expensive for them. 90% green pepper and onion, 8% carrot and a couple thin strips of beef. All for $17? What a ripoff. Never going back.

Simon S.

Yelp
Happened to travel in Fargo on the way to Rushmore, do not feel good on my stomach, then step into this restaurant, no higher expectations than some hot foods to ease my nostalgia The owner couples are really kind and generous, they cared me a lot besides the delicious foods, dedicated to cook the hot water for me, thanks for such great opportunity to know them The dishes are perfect, inside is very tidy and clean, plus the convenient community, it deserves a return
google avatar

Robb M.

Yelp
Very good food. Freshly cooked. Fresh ingredients. Very clean space. I had the curry chicken. Big chunks of veggies and chicken. Steaming white rice served with the entree.
google avatar

Randy D.

Yelp
I have never had Chinese like this, I got sweet and sour shrimp and paid for extra shrimp, every time I have got this any where in the country, it has some carrots, peppers and pineapple, this had some so so shrimp, small serving or plain white rice and some red sauce, was not good!
google avatar

Sydney K.

Yelp
Honestly Fargo isn't a hotspot for Chinese restaurants in my opinion.. this spot is no different. The lo mein tasted like cooking oil, but otherwise lacked flavor. The Mongolian beef had the same issue along with some undercooked veggies that threw off the entire texture of the dish. The fried rice is even bland and subpar. Location is the only thing keeping it from being one star as there aren't many restaurants near here and especially few Chinese spots.

Erica P.

Yelp
Great Wall never fails to provide a fresh, hot, excellent meal. Please be kind and patient as this is a family owned restaurant, not a chain. Food is made fresh to order so a small wait is to be expected. Portions are very generous. Our favorites are Generals chicken, Kung Pao chicken and the egg rolls. We will continue to recommend Great Wall and support this extremely hardworking family!

Anna J.

Yelp
favorite Chinese restaurant in the Fargo Morehead area. Glad they're at a new location last one was rough.

Yelp
The Great Wall is one of my favorite places in town to eat. The food is always hot, well served and delicious! My only reason for giving it a 4- is I always think the owner (female) could be more personable. Disclaimer- I love to get to know the owners of my favorite restaurants but I can't seem to connect with her or start a conversation. Either way I keep going back again and again because well it's delicious, it delivers and I can drive thru!

John S.

Yelp
Oh boy, oh joy 5 stars all day every day. They moved from their location on university Ave. No worries at even a better spot. Directly across the road from 32 ave Essentia Hospital. So a get well feel even better area after the consistent great flavors that come from the kitchen. Mike always makes sure it's right. And Maggie always gives such great hospitality and friendliness. All areas sparkle and shine. So it makes for a wonderful place to dine. But take out and drive thru works great the food eats wonderful with chop sticks, forks or spoons. The big thing is this without a doubt you have to do.... So call now go in quickly. A fiddle leaf fig plant can make you smile and hug you with warmth as you come through the door. Do not get soar at me if you miss this dinning experience.... Get there once you'll be sure to order more and more.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. It was a Sunday night to-go order and I placed order online, it does not give you an eta so I headed to the restaurant. I waited over an hour for my order and she could barely acknowledge my existence. I'm not one to write bad reviews because I'm very patient and realize every place is understaffed but no apology was given or told when it would be done. I assume the woman working at front is the owner. When I finally got my food it was very bland and undercooked (chicken chow mein). I really wanted to like it as it's close to our house but unfortunately I will not be ordering again.

Jenny C.

Yelp
The food was wonderful! We were visiting family from out of town and needed to feed a bunch of people with varying tastes. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We tried the veggie fried rice, veggie lo mein, sweet and sour chicken, beef with broccoli, and my favorite, dry fried green beans. A couple of us had egg rolls, too.

Jess R.

Yelp
The food was decent but the interior of the restaurant is absolutely atrocious. Garbage all over the place and empty pull bottles just laying around...? If you can't keep your public space sanitary I don't want to know what the kitchen looks like.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Walking in, my first thought is this place is a mess. Regardless, I was hungry. I ordered fried rice, potstickers, and fried wontons. Upon bringing it home, the sauce had spilled all in my bag due to a broken lid. The wontons were dry and lacking enough ingredients to make up for the amount of wrapping. The potstickers were deep-fried. The fried rice looks like it was heated up from a frozen bag from Walmart. Wanted to try it out because it's a mom and pop shop but will not be back
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
With the 4 star rating my expectations were high. Unfortunately I was left a bit disappointed. The food was just "fine". Nothing super special. The fried rice was pretty bland and there was little flavor to the dishes I ordered.
google avatar

Kim W.

Yelp
I ordered from this restaurant and had it delivered to my father for Father's Day , by grub hub. He was so disappointed. He did say the egg rolls were amazing but the food was subpar. The lomein was tasteless and the cashew chicken had vegetables that were hardly cooked. The pepper beef was also overloaded with vegetables. So sad to hear, as I live in San Diego and try to find good food to send to my parents. This is not it!
google avatar

Laramie J.

Yelp
This was so so good. Was not expecting this. I had the sesame chicken. Had it delivered--took awhile--but well worth the wait.

Yelp
OMG. Best Chinese food ever! Sadly, it is here in Fargo, and I live many miles away in Northern California! Bummer! Why do I say this? Well, based on other reviews, I visited for lunch back in August. I know, I am just now getting around to this review. But the truth must be known: Great Wall has fabulous food. Plus, I was in Fargo tending to a family member who had surgery at Sanford Medical Center, across University Drive S. I went for lunch one day, staggering in after being stuck in a hospital for hours. I stood and looked at the menu on a board on the wall, searching for.....something. Anything. Starving. The kind woman at the register asked what I wanted. Told her "tofu and veggies". And she suggested the Home Style Bean Curd, $11.59. Huh? She told me it was fresh veggies stir fried with tofu. Did I want a sweet sauce or savory? I picked savory sauce. There was a talented chef in back (very small place), who prepared my food in no time. It arrived piping hot. One bite and I was swooning! The tofu was firm yet tender. The veggies were abundant, bright, crisp-tender. And the sauce was amazing. Really the best veggie and tofu stir fry I have ever had. If Iived in Fargo, I would be here at least once a week if not more. The restaurant is in a 'strip mall' along University drive South, a bit nondescript, easy to pass by. Parking is out front. The interior is small, and a bit worn out but clean. Lovely, helpful staff. Did not check out the restroom. I never thought I would say I am eager to return to Fargo, but Great Wall has another devoted fan!

Yelp
The food was very good (5 star) and the ambience/service was lesser (2-3 star). I had the King Cho which was tasty and filling. Plenty of chicken and broccoli. The menu indicated it was spicy but it wasn't too spicy. My wife has the sweet & sour chicken. It was good but she didn't expect the chicken to be battered in a thick breaking. The ambience and service were peculiar. One table was full of a heaping pile of magazines; some tables were still dirty from previous guests; two tables were occupied with the school work of the operator's kid (which is fine) - and the place is not very big so our choices were limited. A sign asks that you bus your own dishes when done. What surprised me was the large stack of dirty dishes in the bussing area but the woman working was just playing on her phone instead of taking care of the dirty stack and the dirty tables. But I tend to notice things like that. I would get food there again but would probably do carry out or their drive through.

Stormy Rose H.

Yelp
Wasn't good food and they forgot some of it. No refund either. Will not be returning or recommending to anyon.

Lucas R.

Yelp
Best Chinese restaurant in Fargo, easily best service and the fried rice is to DIE for! Best place ever!

Scott M.

Yelp
This restaurant has great food, friendly service. Unsure of timely order service since I ordered through DoorDash. I would not recommend using Doordash. Restaurant only accepts cash, so be prepared. Chicken Fried Rice is very good. EGGROLLS are the best in town! There are a lot of good choices on the menu. Combination Plates Chef Specials Can't wait to eat there again.

Yelp
I have tried most of the Chinese places in town, and today we decided to give Great Wall a chance. Total disappointment. Tiny portions. Food just did not taste good. Chicken lo mein was way too garlicky(and i love garlic). Crab rangoons were just gross. Orange chicken was all breading and very little chicken. S&S chicken was actually good but the portion for $10 was laughable. Would give 0 stars if i was able. Giant Panda isnt too far away, i recommend you go the extra distance...

S Y.

Yelp
We were passing through town and wanted a quick bite to eat. We saw the drive-thru Chinese and had to try it, since we don't have this concept back home on the east coast. Service was friendly and as quick as can be expected with making Chinese food. After ordering, we waited just a few minutes to pick it up. We got some egg rolls and beef lo mein. The egg rolls were tasty. I thought they were nice and crispy, with a good filling to wrapper ratio. The sweet and sour dipping sauce was good, although a little different, as I'm used to getting duck sauce back home. The beef lo mein was just OK. It was tasty, a bit on the salty side. The noodles seemed like standard pasta noodles, instead of Asian noodles. And there wasn't a lot of beef in the dish. The vegetables were good and fresh and added a nice crunch to the dish. If we pass through town, I'd be willing to give them another chance and try some of the other dishes.

Yelp
My wife and I found this little place over 13 years ago when we were going to NDSU. Every time I get a chance to come back and visit, I go out of my way to eat here. We've eaten chinese in our hometowns of St.Paul, MN and Sioux Falls, SD and also in Omaha where we live now, and still haven't had anything near the quality of this place. The restaurant is family run, and the food quality never waivers. My favorite is the beef brocolli, while the missus prefers the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Thy're all good! The atmosphere is definitely very casual, and as a bonus there is no buffet. The food is always made fresh and not stewing in a warming pan. Be sure to carry a local check or cash though, they don't accept credit cards as a cost saving measure.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
I got so tired of mediocre chinese food in the FM area so one day I took a chance on this place and WOW. They made my food fresh to order, and the fried rice is the BEST in town hands down. They are super friendly. The food takes a while because it is freshly made, but you can tell the owners really care about this restaurant. Highly recommend!
google avatar

MK L.

Yelp
I've been going here since the day they opened in 1994 - the food is mostly cooked while you wait, which isn't very long. The chicken is the best I've ever had. There isn't a buffet here so the only thing mostly pre-made is the rice which has always been good. The soup is excellent.
google avatar

Ryan L.

Yelp
Yes! Finally found a great Chinese place in F/M! Great Wall is the place to go and my new favorite! Had the Kung Pao chicken and was surprised at how good it was. The spice level was spot on; and the quality of ingredient was great! The chicken was moist and tender, and the veggies were crisp and full of flavor! Plus the peanuts and rice were a tasty addition. These combination plate come with a side order of sweet and sour chicken...a nice touch and complimentary taste. Gotta have an egg roll too! Crisp and wonderfully fried--more peppery spiced than any other egg roll I've had, but it works. Kind and attentive service made the experience better. Be sure to bring cash...no cards accepted here. Can't wait to go back and try other delicious selections on their menu! Clearly the best in town!

Cole J.

Yelp
Come here if you want old left out food and empty buffet containers. All the best food is never actually there the sushi was gone and the food that was out was garbage
google avatar

Arthur G.

Yelp
Great service food even better I'll keep coming back for more little more pricey well worth it ...
google avatar

Don M.

Yelp
There food is all prepared to order. It is a small restaurant with limited seating. But you won't be disappointed in the quality of the dishes at a reasonable price.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
The atmosphere was "dump". Which never puts me off. I'm in it for the adventure after all. The menu was confusing. (More adventure?) The service was quick. The food hot and fresh. Had the mixed lo main. Not bad, not good but not bad. Dad had hunan beef. Spicy. No real complaints just OK. The main problem was I was expecting a buffet. So this should really be a complaint to yelp for advertising it as a buffet and not the Great Wall of China Restaurant. Also, if you say "No Public Restrooms" then take the sign off the door that says MEN. Thank you very much. All in all, just an average mini adventure. If you're going for the downtown Shanghai experience then this place is more outskirts Bakersfield.

Tricia H.

Yelp
Love Great Wall! I have not had Chinese food this good since I lived in NYC. General Tso's, crab rangoons & egg rolls are our go to items.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
The best Chinese in Fargo. Service can be a little slow but worth the wait in my opinion. The restaurant and the building the restaurant is in is very dilapidated and would not be my choice to take a date.
google avatar

Bill L.

Yelp
For starters...be sure to bring cash as they don't accept card or out of town checks. This is easily my favorite mom and pop Chinese restaurant in the area. No buffet means they actually make your food for you versus having it out like a place to graze. They have awesome eggs rolls. Everything I have had has been great. The Hot and Sour soup is fantastic.

Ana C.

Yelp
Service and drive thru was quick! However, don't order the spring rolls, had interesting flavor that was not appetizing in the slightest.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Let me start by saying, I'm a business traveler. I generally do not carry cash, and I obviously don't have "in town" checks. That means at Great Wall, I have to pay with cash. Luckily I had some on me, because I would have been pretty miffed to realize that I needed to find an ATM after I had already had to seek this place out, not knowing the city very well. I was craving egg rolls. I asked the staff at the office where I routinely work when I visit Fargo where to go. More than one person told me to try Great Wall. This is definitely a little mom & pop operation, which I love to support. They even had their small daughter (and her artwork- adorable!) around the restaurant. The Won Ton soup was very good, but the noodles were a bit mushy. I very much enjoyed the Kung Pao chicken. But the reason I went there were the egg rolls, and I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed. When I bite into an egg roll- I want it to be firm- this one had a little too much give for my tastes. I also didn't get any soy sauce in my carry out meal, which made the fried rice almost not worth eating. I don't expect Fargo to be the Chinese food capital of the world, but I think I will keep searching.
google avatar

Ben Z.

Yelp
Good food, but it seems like there was an abundance of celery on my plate. I got the cashew chicken. Will get food here again because it's in the neighborhood and there's more items I want to try. Look I like celery, but I want maybe one piece per bite maybe, not 3 or 4 or bite.
google avatar

Blake G.

Yelp
Do people really think this place is worth four or five stars? Have you ever eaten real Chinese food? This is mediocre Americanized Chinese food -- not even good for what it attempts. I ordered fried string beans and they couldn't even be bothered to remove the stems. Service was curt and unfriendly. This place is close to my house, but I won't eat there again.
google avatar

Haley J.

Yelp
Pros: Mom and Pop store Cons: booth nearest door had a few grease ants, I moved to another seat Place sells food like the business next door sells oxygen. Just basic food.

Caitlin S.

Yelp
After reading reviews we had high hopes for our meal here but we ordered cream cheese wontons and got pork (we think) filled wontons. The lo mein was not good and the sweet and sour chicken was 90% breading 10% chicken. Even the fortune cookies had black spots on them. Kind service though!

Jessy W.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. Now that we live out of town, it's an extra special treat to come here. The owners are so friendly! I usually get the General Tso's chicken and pork wontons. The food is always fresh and made to order. The chicken is crispy and juicy as well as the wontons. I'm always excited for the next time we visit here.
