Where to Eat Near Your Publicis Office | Eater

"This food court restaurant may not look like much, but it serves possibly the best pho you’re going to find outside of Uptown. Its new location at Clark and Madison is slightly farther than it used to be when it was next door at Clark and Lake, but the extra few blocks are totally worth it for huge bowls of hot pho full of fresh meat and vegetables, as well as a good selection of Korean staples like bibimbap." - Vox Creative

Green Apple PHOever is an absolute treasure tucked away in the food court of the building. If you’re in the Loop and craving amazing pho or Korean food, this is the spot you need to try! Their pho is outstanding—the broth is incredibly clean yet packed with umami flavor, and the meat is unbelievably tender and fresh. The portion size was just right, leaving me perfectly satisfied. One standout detail: the owner mentioned they make their own chili oil, and you can taste the love and care in every drop! I also have to recommend their Korean short rib soup and beef bone soup! Both are rich, flavorful, and incredibly comforting, with deep, hearty broths that warm you up instantly. I can confidently say this place will become one of my go-to spots. Don’t miss out on this hidden gem—highly recommend it👍🏻❤️

Google
This place is located in a food court in the basement of a building. It is close to the hotel that i stayed at and it opens at 8am. I decided to try this place out. I ordered the combination pho and gimbap. The pho is different than what i am used to, like having shrimps and imitation crabs in it. The gimbap is decent size. The guy that makes the food was pretty nice and quick.

Google
I popped in on a Saturday morning. The pho was a great way to start the day: good balance of broth, noodles, and meat. The man who served me was very kind - there was hoisin at the table with chili oil up front. Randomly, the hot coffee was delicious, super simple and well sweetened. It was a nice finish on the walk home after the pho. Definitely worth trying in the Loop, especially for an early lunch during work or when you find yourself there on a Saturday.

You’re walking to the building you passed the security guard on the left side. You’ll see the sign go down the stairs. .Good simple food , one man kitchen ,you order and pay on a kiosk he calls you number has a good size menu I just I just got something simple to try it out, but I will be back in the mango smoothie was good

Google
Their bulgogi was flavorful and it was a fast and easy place to grab a bite for lunch! The only thing is that they do not serve the bhan mi with baguette but a normal bread roll

Google
Had lunch here, got the chicken and vegetable pho. It was nice on a rainy day, however the chicken could’ve been cooked better. Overall hit the spot and would try a different pho next time!

Jessica Moon

Google
Such a hidden gem for pho in the loop! They use a house made bone broth for the soup base that makes the soup very clean and not overly rich.

Google
A cozy hole-in-the-wall spot in the heart of downtown. Although unassuming, this counter-service restaurant delivers on flavor, with decently priced dishes that won’t break the bank. While I haven’t had a chance to try the pho yet, the bulgogi bibimbop and kimchi stew (jjigae) are absolutely delicious and worth coming back for. It’s a great place for a quick and satisfying meal if you’re in the area.

Yelp
I was skeptical since it was a pho restaurant within a court, but I decided to try it. I had their pho with steak and it was okay. The broth wasn't that flavorful and the noodles were cooked okay. There was only one size to picked which sucks. The ambiance was okay. It's a part of a food court so it's just standard cafeteria seating. The service was okay. You order via a kiosk. The pho didn't take long to make.

Yelp
This place is open from 7 AM to 3 PM and it's inside building so you never know it's there unless you go inside the building. Unfortunately, the Concierge is very unfriendly so be aware in case you bump into him. For example, I said hello, and he just ignored me and looked at me straight in my face. Hello Chicago! Not. Most Chicago people are very sweet and friendly. Korean owned pHO place! Nice and healthy.

Yelp
Nice spot for a delicious galbi tang or other Korean / Vietnamese dishes. I don't usually go to fusion spots but gave this place a try because I was craving some good galbi tang. The dish was a bit small but very flavorful broth and I ordered extra meat so had plenty of short ribs to eat that were juicy and tender. They also give you a small amount of kimchi and a lot of rice. Overall good spot for a flavorful dish , service was good and food came out quick. I would recommend this spot. It's in a hidden area in the basement and has plenty of seating , shared with other restaurants.

Yelp
What a good lunch spot in the Loop! I've been to the La Bamba in the basement food court and made a note to come back and get some pho. It was delicious! The serving is large and comes with a plate of toppings (sprouts, cilantro, jalapeños, lime) to truly customize your pho. Despite the lack of ambience, being in a food court basement, the food is good and I'd definitely return.

Yelp
Working in the Loop, reminded me of Manhattan, which means lunch options are often too expensive. Sometimes you just need some quick cheap eats, before going back to the desk. This was one option I found nearby. You will need to head to the basement for the food court. Food + Service: 4/5 The female cashier was super nice and friendly. I was stuck between 3 dishes and she helped lean to the beef pho. The dish was ready in less than 15mins, so fast! The broth, very simple, nothing to write home about, the meat present and tasty, and the sides (bean sprouts, basil, etc) fresh. I was very satisfied for the price and convenience. All in all, looking for a quick affordable bite close to the office, not a bad option. Is this the best pho, no, but definitely one of the most affordable ones I have had in a downtown area.

Yelp
How wonderful to find great bibimbap so conveniently located in the Loop! Green Apple PHOever stands out for bibimbap that's as delicious as the best place in New York City! That's from a couple OGs who've tried and been disappointed by lots of places sloppy take on this classic. For starters, the rice is cooked with care to avoid the lumpy sogginess of so many rice bowl shops. The toppings are fresh and attractive. A dash of sesame oil elevates the assembly to match our former favorite place -- which succumbed to the pandemic. The old school hospitality and conversation added to a most enjoyable lunch! At first, I was concerned about how we would visit a restaurant below street level while dragging suitcases. But the security guard pointed us to the elevator that took us down to the food court. Easy peasy.

Yelp
There is no pho like basement pho. Crazily, I got soup from them at 9:30am ON A SATURDAY. Specifics FYI: If you're already in the neighborhood and need a quick noodle soup fix, they do the job. They're inside a building's downstairs food court. Credit accepted.

Yelp
I had the gomtang which amounts to about $20 before tip. The soup broth left much to be desired. I don't mind the abundance of scallions, but there was way too much pepper. There should only be a hint of pepper. Even after two packets of table salt (the only salt they had available) it still tasted like water and pepper. It's a beef bone soup and there was was no beef flavor present. The rice came out uncovered, dry, and obviously had been sitting under a heat lamp. 1 star for the kimchi being good.
google avatar

Patricia P.

Yelp
No-frills kind of spot, in the heart of the downtown area. But I'm really glad I stopped in. The broth wasn't incredibly deep but hearty. The portion was great for a lunch treat, and lots of rib eye thinly sliced. I really enjoyed the bowl, didn't even add the sprouts or cilantro provided. Perfect as is.
google avatar

Oh M.

Yelp
I can not believe how many people gave the pho rave reviews. I got here extremely early in the morning so maybe the broth was just started but it was EXTREMELY BLANK AND TASTELESS. I never use hoisin sauce for my pho but I had to this time and it STILL didn't taste good. No basil either. They just gave a few cilantro leaves. I am highly disappointed with this place. Wasn't good at all.
google avatar

Yelp
Good lunch spot when working. Filling and affordable, as well as tasty! Would come back.

Yelp
It's not bad for the price. There isn't a lot of good pho in the Loop. I think they do Korean food better. The bulgogi banh mi was massive and it was delicious. The pho tai's broth was a little lacking in other spices. It's in a hidden food court but there's enough seating. There's also a monitor on the side that you can order from if there's no one at the front. It may not be the best if you have mobility problems since there's a flight of stairs you need to go through. At the end, you put away the trash and bring the plates back to the counter.
google avatar

Yelp
Once arrived, the location was disappointing but once the food came, it was all smiles. What a surprise. The food was flavorful and delicious. The meal came timely as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Fast, delicious and healthy! The chicken bibimbap has a mild-moderate amount of spiciness which is great for those of us that don't have a super high spice tolerance. Extra red pepper sauce is available for those who want to kick it up a notch, though. All the vegetables were delicious- the sesame oil flavor really comes through. I think they should do a name rebrand to focus on Korean food because that's really what they excel at.

Serenidy P.

Yelp
Simple and delicious. An absolute gem of a spot in a very unpretentious setting. I recommend this place to anyone I know going into town.
google avatar

Heying D.

Yelp
This place is pretty hidden, in a underground tiny food hall - but it's a hidden gem! I loved it very much. They have Korean and Vietnamese food. I got a big bowl of Pho and was very happy. It comes with all the sauces (hoisin and sriracha), bean sprouts and thai basil. The broth is ver flavorful and tasty. Great place! Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty sad that this is the best pho in the area. The broth was murky and my noodles were one clump. It was not good, and hardly any meat so I consider $17 after tax for a bowl to be expensive. I also got the bibimbap which should be good because they're Korean. Nope. My vegetables were old and wilted. The bulgogi was bland and I got scraps. $16 small portion and still hungry.

Tom Z.

Yelp
Ordered the Pho Tai on uber eats and it was so delicious, all the ingredients were fresh and it was packaged with care. Definitely my new favorite pho spot!
google avatar

Vivienne L.

Yelp
Great hidden jam in the downtown! Always served with authentic pho and few phenomenal korean dishes! Their meal kits also come in clutch whether you are in hurry to cook a meal or craving pho or Korean/Asian dishes:) Definitely recommend to preorder their meal kits and enjoy authentic asian cuisine right at your home!
google avatar

Song C.

Yelp
Ordered the pho, takeout, delivered to my hotel room after a long night of drinking! Super bland. No flavor. A total miss. Not authentic at all. I was super sad If you want real pho, go somewhere else.
google avatar

Kendall C.

Yelp
A pho / Korean place but the pho was very good. It's in the bottom of a business building, food court style.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Decided to order from here because of the ratings. Got the pho dac biet, gomtang, and the banh mi. Pho was ok, soup was cloudy. I usually don't add in the sriracha and hoisin sauce but they were needed this time. Gomtang was not bad, a bit unctuous and thin/lacking collagen. They leave it unseasoned so you can tune it to your liking. The kkakdugi that it came with was inedible. The banh mi was slathered in mayo, tasted odd.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
If you want atmosphere, this place ain't that. Literally in the basement food court of an office building. Next to a burrito place and another restaurant. I've passed by it on my way to work dozens of times. Complete dive, the kind of place that scares away tourists. However, the food is top notch. Giant bowls of pho. I had the chicken pho and dined in. Came out in 10 minutes. Served with oyster sauce and a chili sauce on the side with some bamboo shoots, jalapeno slices, and cilantro. Noodles have great flavor, the broth is delicious and I slurpped up every drop. Taking off one star for the chicken. Not much flavor, a bit bland, tasted like it had been pre cooked awhile or maybe even boiled. Mixing in the oyster and chili sauce makes this dish stand out. With this being two blocks from my office, I'll definitely be going back.

Yelp
Green Apple PHOever provided the cure we needed after a crazy night out downtown! Service was quick for a pickup! Their Pho Tai was amazing, with a tasty broth. Their Bulgogi Rice Bowl was really good as well; I had to steal some bites from my boyfriend's plate.

Yelp
This was first time getting food from Green Apple PHOever and it was quite lackluster. I was excited to see that there was a Vietnamese and Korean restaurant a block away from my work. Decided to try out their bulgogi banh mi. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: - ordering was efficient; they have a self-serve kiosk that you order from. Looked like the machine only accepted card (unsure about Apple Pay) - my order came out very quickly! Granted I went after lunch rush so maybe it was the timing of my visit, but my sandwich came out in less than 5 min - flavors of the sandwich weren't mind blowing but they were enough to satisfy my craving for Asian food. Cons: - I walked one block back to work (~5 min) before I dug into my sandwich but the bread was already sopping wet and turned into mush due to the pickled veggies. Unlike an authentic banh mi, the baguette also lacked the crunchy outer shell. Instead of a French baguette type of bread, it felt more like I was eating a ciabatta sandwich. - they put entire stalks of cilantro in my sandwich, which made taking bites difficult and messy. The cilantro leaves were also black when I opened my sandwich, which makes me think they were not using the freshest produce. - the bulgogi meat was quite stringy and hard to chew. Flavor of the meat wasn't bad but nothing noteworthy. The chewiness really overpowered so I could not really focus on the flavor. Another reason why my sandwich to be pretty difficult and messy to eat. - they charge to-go orders a $.50 fee but I'm not really sure what for. My food came in a regular, unlabeled brown paper lunch sack, with 2 sheets of napkins. I thought for the upcharge, I'd at least get my money's worth but I was just left confused. Just keep in mind you'll have to pay an extra fee if you want to get your order to-go! Overall, this was a quick fix for my lunch today. I would not go out of my way to come here for a special meal, but the experience did not offend me enough to stay away. I'll probably be back if I'm craving Vietnamese or Korean food again while at work since Asian food options around here are limited, but I don't think I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Came here for galbi tang fix couple days ago. Coming from California where there's plethora of good Asian food. I think this place was just okay. It's a good court so it was fast and many seats to choose from. Fast and easy spot to get lunch!

Yelp
I am not from town and I was craving a Pho but the name of the restaurant is misleading.... this is not a vietnamese restaurant at all. I didnt try the korean dishes but they looked good. Im vietnamese and its basically the worst Pho ive ever had... it looks like a pho, the herbs are fresh.... but IT DOES NOT TASTE AUTHENTIC PHO... the broth is foggy and doesnt taste the typical spices there should be and the meatballs either.... Sincerely dissapointed :(

Yelp
Meh. It was fine. It wasn't that hard to find, but going down into the basement to discover it's a food court was a tad disappointing. The food was fine. We ordered the bibimbap. It was okay. My wife ordered for me, which ended up being a bad decision on her part because what she got me, I definitely did not want. And the egg was overdone. With that being said, the bibimbap was good but everything else was mediocre. The dishes came in these aluminum bowls, which I found unique.
google avatar

Jerry C.

Yelp
Food court vibe. No decor and difficult to find but the bun mi and pho is legit and tasty for someone without easy access to Vietnamese food. Basically fast food for Vietnamese cuisine. But don't let the lack of decor fool you, it's more than decent.
google avatar

Yelp
HANDS DOWN the best authentic, Korean spot in the Loop. I love the restaurant's wide variety of both Korean and Vietnamese options. I have tried now their pho, kimchi stew, beef stew and bibimbap - all really solid! The location is good as well, the seating is laid out like a food court. It has more than enough seating for a big lunch outing during work. I am Korean myself and highly, highly recommend everyone to check out Green Apple PHOever for authentic Korean and Vietnamese food!
google avatar

Liana B.

Yelp
Didn't feel so hot the next day after my covid vaccine booster so naturally I wanted chicken soup. Felt that pho was the surest way to go. Green Apple PHOever was the closest to me so I gave it a try! Ordered the pho at home kit for delivery. Delivery was very quick at 10:30. Just needed to assemble and heat up. I recommend heating up the chicken and broth first then throwing in the other ingredients. I know that's how they do it in Vietnam!! Will definitely order from here again when I am sick but also try it out when I am not.

Stacy S.

Yelp
Great mom-and-pop shop in the food court basement of a building! Perfect for lunch breaks at work and the recent colder weather. My friends and I got their varying types of pho and we all loved it, especially the flavor of the broth. It was exactly what we needed and hit the spot, and it was also quite filling. They served the food quickly and I would love to try their Korean dishes in the future as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This place located near the loop in Madison and Lasalle - in a small discrete food court under a condo / office building. There is a La Bamba taco place next door. It's Korean owned - they all speak Korean and they are a nice family. The Vietnamese isn't as good as the Korean food IMO. Kalbi tang and their bimbimbop are great.
google avatar

Belle L.

Yelp
Mood of the Moment... KOREAN FOOD, the meat versions, such as GOMTANG and Special GALBI TANG. BIBIMBOP in a b-i-g stainless steel bowl is my next stop (I used to get it to go). OWNER is the ethnically ambiguous middle age Asian Guy who walks around the seating area, sometimes wiping the table, announcing orders, or behind the counter. Is BYEUNG, Cashier Lady, his daughter? She has cool, unique makeup. Authenticity of KOREAN FOOD is approved by lip smacking foreign-born Koreans, mandarin speaking Chinese, and english speaking Chinoy (term from Canada for Chinese Filipino, the USA version is degrading). GRAB A SEAT, quick! There may be plenty of seating, BUT... 4-6 office mates come here to eat.

Yelp
*** Note: Order through the Ritual app and bypass the line *** It was not incredibly busy when I came here on Monday around noon. It's not exactly the most easy place to find, but you walk down the stairs into a food court to find it on your left. I was torn between ordering the pho, bibimbap, or bulgogi. In the end, I decided on the Chicken Bibimbap. It comes in a massive bowl that's bigger than your face and gochujang sauce on the side (despite lacking the option on the Ritual app). I know this is definitely not authentic by any means, but the food was very underwhelming unfortunately. The chicken didn't taste that fresh, and the vegetables were lacking. There was way too much sauce slathered onto the chicken that didn't marinate well enough. The service was decent though. Despite a busy line, the cashier didn't ignore me and kept me updated on my order. At $10.02 for very subpar food, I'd say check out other options in the loop.

Yelp
This was a decent but unremarkable pho in an underground food court that is probably in need of some renovation. I knew from other reviews that it was in a food court so my expectations were pretty reasonable for ambiance. First, the menu prices have gone up significantly since the most recent menu photos were taken. The photos show all the pho dishes under $10. They're more like $15-$16 now. It took a while to order because nobody was at the counter or noticed us for a while. The food came out pretty quickly, less than five minutes. My pho was fine. The chicken was shaved pretty thin and there was not too much of it, but the noodles and plate of cilantro and bean sprouts were fresh. It was a bit bland, even after I added all the lime, jalapeño, oyster sauce and sriracha provided. My friend really liked her beef dish with cellophane noodles though. I had to get a to-go container for my leftovers, and that also took some time because nobody was manning the counter, and when the guy did come over, he was focused on something going on opposite the counter and didn't notice me. Overall, it was okay. You could probably do better, but this was close to our Air BnB. I would have walked farther if it meant better pho. Too pricy to be average, too average to be a destination.

Yelp
My go to lunch spot. I love it. Every time I crave KBBQ I go to green apple. Everything is amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Was great pre pandemic but now is the most plan Pho in the city. Will not be back. Bottled water has more flavor.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
This place gets the job done for a lunch time pho spot. The pho won't be the best you've ever tasted, but it's still yummy. The line is fast and efficient. I personally like to get the pho dac biet each time since the brisket is always warm and tender. Pro tip- bring your own bowl to save the extra $2 to-go charge.
google avatar

Yelp
Located at the lower floor. The entry is located on Madison. You order at the counter then the food is servered on a tray later according the number you get. We tried outt the beef pho and Bibimbap. It was quite interesting to see the Korean food and Vienamese food at the same place. Both pho soup and Bibimbap are decent but not outstanding. The broth in the pho soup were pretty good and noodles were cooked right. The meat was a bit dry. Bibimbap was lacking the veggies I expected. The flavor was greate. The services were pretty good. And there are plenty tables to sit. It is always good to be able to have some Asian food during the lunch hours.

Yelp
Clean, cozy, delicious, and good price. We came here from the art institute and loved it.

Yelp
Second time coming here for lunch and I brought along some co-workers this time to try pho for the first time. Located in the basement of some building, Green Apple is one of 3 restaurants. We arrived after noon on a Friday (big mistake), the line was at the door and we waited for probably 10 minutes before we reached the front. I ordered the Pho Tai (rare beef but here they call it steak pho), one co-worker tried the pho Tai, and another co-worker tried the chicken and vegetables. I have ordered the Korean before and I do not recommend it- no flavor and definitely not spicy. The broth was good and the noodles were the right amount of chewiness. However the beef was not cooked well done by the time it came to me. I'm used to pho Tai actually being rare beef. My coworker who tried pho Tai for the first time loved it My coworker who ordered the chicken and vegetables was enjoying her meal until she found a black hair in there, her hair is not black at all. They were going to make her a new dish, but she had lost her appetite so they did give her a refund and let her choose a free drink. If you work in the loop and are craving Vietnamese food this is a good stop. If not, I recommend just heading up to Argyle for Vietnamese food. After tax my bowl of Pho was 11.02$

Yelp
This was my first time visiting! I ordered using the Ritual App and my food was ready when I got there. I ordered the beef bibimbap and although the flavors were good, my meat was a little tough. I also ordered a side of kimchi and it hit the spot! The flavors were all there and I really liked the chili paste it came with! I will have to try the pho next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Went back for the first time since 2013! The broth in the meatball pho is delicious. I asked the cashier if the meatballs were beef or pork, and it took him a while to choose which meat to tell me they were. After I started eating the bowl, I know why he didn't know....I'm pretty sure these are frozen swedish meatballs. Nonetheless, the pho was tasty and the portions were just as huge as they were years ago.
google avatar

Cerene S.

Yelp
OH MY GOD!!!! I was skeptical at first because I wanted the beef pho, and the menu said the beef is rare. I'm not a fan of rare anything so when i placed my order i asked if it could be well done. The order taker didn't speak well english, but said ok. To my delight my pho was perfect, noodles were soft but not soggy, broth was very flavorful, beef was cooked no pink and the meatballs were very tasty. I normally don't like spending $10+ on lunch, but it was well worth it. Perfect for a chilly brisk day in Chicago!

Yelp
A great place for a casual quick lunch. The restaurant is located in the basement of the building. The decor is simple and plain. The seating area is super clean and it gets quite packed down there during the lunch rush. The food is fresh and fast like typical Asian food. I got the Beef Bibimbap and thought it was decent for $10 including tax. If you pay cash you get a free bottle of water. It was strange to see lettuce leaves in it and they were kind of brown. As for the rest of the veggies they were pickled and seasoned nicely. The portion is decent and I was pretty full. I would definitely recommend coming here for a quick Korean/Vietnamese fix. They have a decent list of Pho options as well.

Yelp
I'm SO glad I can get my pho fix while living in Chicago downtown. The pho doesn't taste authentic (Vietnamese) but nevertheless, the broth is super clean and good. I like how it's not oily and I don't feel too bloated after. I used to eat here during the summer almost every morning but now I eat here every Saturday morning because of my work schedule. The ahjushi that works there might not appear friendly at first but you jus gotta eat there everyday and I think I made him smirk once. Praise the lord hallelujah that this place opens early. I tried their chicken, galbi tang, pho and kimchi stew. I would say galbi tang and pho are the best here. PLEASE DONT EVER CLOSE!!!

Yelp
Yes, I know I've reviewed you before but I only write again because I want everyone to know about your healing and mighty-delicious chicken pho. Hangover. Cold. Good day. Bad day. Week day. Rainy day. Hot summer day. Frigid day in February. You name it, Green Apple will brighten your day with a bowl of their piping hot and refreshing pho. I've had many o' bowls of pho and am confident in saying this is one of the best. Why? 1.) the broth. It's all about the broth. The fat content appears to be lower with a lighter, less-guilt ridden taste to it; 2.) location - despite being geographically located in one of the most hustling and bustling areas of Chicago, you have this way of being a hidden gem via your second floor location in the atrium of a downtown corporate building (I like to pretend I'm the only one who knows about you) For $7.50 you make my day every time I visit. Also available at Green Apple: other varieties of pho, smoothies and juices, complimentary water jug and plentiful shared seating with the other 5 to 7 restaurants in the building.
