Green Bean books is a great locally owned, small bookstore for kids. Earl seems to know and has read every book in the store, and all they want to do is please the readers. The place is small and can get crowded, so we try not to linger too long. They love to give during Halloween by giving out gift bags with Halloween designs on them, and there is always a line. But the books are moderately priced and always a great selection. Easy to find one for a gift or for your own child

I discovered this gem in the heart of Portland. I went with my cousin, we’re both big book lovers. The staff is really helpful, even recommending books for us. They also offer activities like story readings and crafts, which is so fun. The book selection is quite varied, I’ll definitely be coming back again.

Google
This little shop helped me to remember where my love of books started. Everything is whimsical and there are pockets of delight everywhere you look. Little diaramas hidden in the bookshelf, a funny vending machine for bushy eyebrows, one for little animals, one for tiny books, etc. This is the kind of place that will be a core memory for any child. No doubt as they grow, they will compare any future bookstore to the magic of this one.

Google
Green Bean is an amazing locally owned bookstore. The staff is extremely helpful and they have an amazing selection of well known and local authors! It’s a must if you’re looking for children’s books (or a cozy bookstore to browse)!

Marshall A.

Google
Super cute store if very friendly owner. He has great books including from local authors and he also has cute little knock knacks

Google
Charm to spare in this small bookstore, with quirky little art here and there and lots of great children's books. Perfect little patio area for author readings. It makes my heart happy that there are still wonderful little bookstores thriving like this one.

We absolutely love Green Bean Books! The staff is awesome and the space is magical. ✨️💕

Yelp
This is the modern day Shop Around the Corner of Portland. My family was greeted upon entering and offered recommendations. The knowledgable staff member sparked a memory when they mentioned a few books from my own childhood. They then instantly reminded me of a real life Kathleen Kelly. They ended up showing us a few books based on our daughter's interests. My daughter loved their suggestions. We ended up purchasing one book that they suggested because of their interaction with us. The store is cute itself but having someone with that excitement and knowledge makes you want to come back. Overall review: Very cute children's bookstore with fun creative displays. Great selection of books and calming patio. Highly suggest this store.

Yelp
A perfect example of a cute and quaint children's bookstore filled with unique items and a friendly atmosphere. Each shelf is packed with books and other goods, as well as recommendations and knick knacks. You won't necessarily find a bargain here but they do have a small sale section and prices are comparable to other book sellers. Masks are encouraged but not required anymore. Street parking only.

Yelp
Amazing selection of books! I wanted to buy every single one of them. It's such a quality collection and it spans all of childhood into YA. As an added bonus, the space is adorable.

Yelp
A cozy bookshop with a small but mighty selection with so many diverse books for kids of all ages, many of which have BIPOC authors and characters. As an adult who loves whimsy, I truly enjoyed looking at everything and even found one of my favorite artist's pieces in a box on one of the shelves! That was really exciting. A huge shout out to the person working that day (they were wearing a Golden Girls t-shirt) bc they were so friendly and SO knowledgable, they gave so many great recommendations. My sister loved the book that they helped us pick for her and that really speaks volumes!! I left with 2 beautiful hand-painted ceramic cups myself, but wished I could have bought everything. Aside from books, they also have Jellycats, blind boxes, stickers, tote bags, HANDMADE FINGER PUPPETS and so much more!

Yelp
I love supporting independent book sellers!! Such a cute bookshop! It is small but PACKED with books for babies/kids, along with toys and plenty of stuffed animals tucked among it all to entice little hands. We are visiting Portland just for a few days, but if I lived close enough I would definitely take part in their story times with my daughter. There is a nice, covered outdoor patio to the side where I assume those take place. I also saw on their calendar they offer sign ups for kids to come practice reading to a therapy dog! (ahh, I just can't...insert sobbing emoji here)

Fatima S.

Yelp
Too many choices when you're trying to pick a book haha. I love love this bookstore! The staff is super friendly and eager to help with whatever you're looking for. And they gift wrap!

Yelp
Stopped into Green Bean Books (9/27/19), because of course it's an indie bookstore full of children's titles. But what caught my fancy with nearly a side of squee were all the stuffed animals and food items strategically placed all over various bookshelves. So cute that I had texted photos taken of some of these items to The Homie at school and my colleagues at work. Lovely and helpful bookstore business associate (or owner?) who upon my inquiry led me to the culinary section. I stood on a step stool to procure a copy of Yum Yum Dim Sum. I had a flashback reading this countless times to Alex (aka The Homie) when he was very young. He attends high school now. Yes, I went to a bookstore and made an impulse purchase of a stuffed ice cream cone ($17, originally thought it was a cupcake). There were others that I should have purchased but...didn't. It's a Portland neighborhood gem...make the effort to support a local indie bookstore. The gift of reading enriches us all.

Yelp
Lovely little bookstore with attentive and thoughtful recommendations from the person working there today. I came in for one book, left with three!

Lizzy K.

Yelp
Love this children's book store! My son has many books of a large variety from here- board books, regular children's books, picture books, and eventually chapter books. Staff has always had great recommendations and advice. Books are sold at value, and are in nice condition. Highly recommend it, and if you're local, getting their rewards program!

Yelp
My cousin and his family live in Portland, and I wanted to buy gifts for his kids when we visited them over MLK weekend. One of my friends noted that there'd be some good baby stores on Alberta, where we were already planning to spend some time walking around. We saw Green Bean Books while we were parking and headed straight there. I love bookstores and have been to more of them than I can count, in almost every city I've ever visited. Green Bean Books is the only one of its kind that I've seen, a wonderful place devoted to children's books, charming and whimsical in a way that would've struck me as straight-up magical when I was a kid. There were books everywhere, as well as various gift items for children. The central featured books display had a casually diverse, socially conscious flavor. As my niece and nephew aren't quite reading yet, I got them a stuffed llama and a board book about dogs. There was one guy working the store, and he was an amazing host, like a bookstore Willy Wonka. I overheard him giving a very detailed recommendation to another customer, so I asked for his help picking a book for a 3-year-old. I mentioned that it'd be a bonus if the book featured a basset hound, and he pulled out the board book, which sure enough had multiple pictures of bassets. When we checked out, he asked us to put our credit card in the gorilla paw (the credit card machine was in a toy gorilla paw) and to sign with the panda pen. As he bagged the llama, he noted that there'd be a real llama visiting the store in a few weeks (I guess this is happening this weekend--you can meet Rojo the Llama on February 10!). Apparently Green Bean does great events--there must be some kind of book club, as there was the cutest set-up of tiny chairs on an outdoor patio, and there's a regular Read to a Dog event in which kids can practice reading to a therapy dog. If I had children in Portland we would live at Green Bean Books. It's just the sweetest little shop, perfect for kids (and adults!) who love to read and be around books and dogs and llamas.

Yelp
Discovered this whimsical bookstore in the Alberta district today. Was greeted by two amazing people that guided me to the perfect books for my nephews and niece. It was throughly the most delightful experience. I described my nephews and niece and the lovely staff found the most incredible books for me. I recommend them, and I will definitely be back!!

Yelp
By far one of my favorite kids bookstores I've ever visited. They're selection is so expansive and I love how much local writers they support and show off. I have been here several times pre-Covid and although a small space - a very welcoming one with a lot of options. With COVID now they've adjusted really well and you can order online or call in your order and they have contact free pickup. I've also been able to order a few non-kids books too!

Yelp
Found this little bookstore while exploring Alberta Street. If I had a kid, I would love bringing them here. It's adorable and would recommend it for families with kids! Lots of books for children and young teens. They host readings and little events once in a while as well. Love how they try to involve community activities! LAYOUT: It looks small, but it's a little bigger once you're inside than how it looks from the outside. It's very cozy, well-decorated, and super kid friendly. SERVICE: I didn't buy anything, but the ladies who were working there were really sweet and friendly. FIND LOWLY WORM: They have a little game in the store where you have to find Lowly Worm. I found him pretty quickly. It's a fun thing to do once you're there though. Great throwback for me as I loved Richard Scarry's Busytown series haha.

Yelp
As I was walking along Alberta, I stumbled on to this adorable store, on first sight it made me smile and think this is a store Matilda would love, so of course I had to go in. This tiny store is FILLED with all the adorable books for kids and just was everything adorable and make any reader excited. I wanted to buy books for my little cousin on construction and the young lady working was BEYOND helpful showing me the sections and striking up conversations with me, she was everything customer service was about. I wished I could buy all the books, but I was traveling :( However I was able to get some items and breathe in all the positive energy in the room. Also, they gave me a bookmark which also made everything better. This is a great location to bring kids to pick out a book or two! Also, a good location to get a gift in Portland. Their is ample street parking in the area.

Yelp
I love bringing my son in here. It is our first option when buying children's books for birthdays and special occasions for him or his friends parties. The staff always have great suggestions if you can't find anything yourself. I think it is important to support fun, cute and local children's book stores so please consider this before buying online. We love the little room at the back and hearing books being read on the patio.

Yelp
A cute children's bookstore with a great selection ranging from early-start reading to middle-readers. The shop itself is pretty small, but there's so much to see and choose from. There's a small reading area for both adults and children's to read aloud. The boyfriend and I went in to browse for books as a souvenir for my baby brother. The owner noticed that we've walked around the shop but haven't found anything so she kindly asked if we needed help. I let her know that I'm looking for something similar to "A Series of Unfortunate Events" and/or "Spiderwick" for a middle-school boy. She immediately recommended "Secrets" and said that the writing style is similar. She was very knowledgeable about all of the books she carries and debriefed us on every book she recommended. It goes to show that she's read every book she carries in her store -- very personable (as opposed to Barnes and Nobles and other big-named book stores). Another point worth mentioning is the activities they host in store, or advertise for. I noticed a sign that said "read to dogs." I learned about this concept through my cousin whom owns and operates a private school. He said it's a great program for kids who are not confident in reading aloud to others, and so reading to dogs allows each and every student to practice reading aloud without the judgment of others. What a great concept! So if you have a child that needs that extra boost, definitely check out this cute little bookstore.

Yelp
Book stores are a favorite place to visit when we are traveling, and Green Bean Books is always one of the best! They are practicing thoughtful mask and distancing protocols, and still offering a friendly welcome. We love the selection of children's books, the service and recommendations, and the extra touches, like their unique vending machines, and the art installation by Maggie Rudy. We are so glad we had another happy visit.

Yelp
It's bigger on the inside. (You'll have to go inside to see.....) I adore this bookstore. Ever since I was little I've loved bookstores, and this store is exactly the kind of store I would have wanted to spend all day in as a child. As an adult I still miss bookstores, and since this store does carry some adult books I stop in and purchase books from time to time. The store itself is whimsical and has nooks and crannies and surprises hidden away around each corner. Plenty of seating for both adults and children. The staff is knowledgable and extremely helpful in assisting you with finding a new book for every age. The store is geared toward children, but I've always been able to find great books for adults of all genres. Have also read several great fantasy books and science fictions here that were recommended by staff.

Yelp
This place is a true treasure to stumble upon...and then come back to over and over and over again! It is quaint...a tiny little red building full of children's books with a staff right out of a dream. Earl is the very most kind and helpful bookstore keeper I have ever met! Greenbeans is always well stocked with the lastest and greatest and quick to assist with any of my kiddos eccentric requests. They also have a calendar full of all sorts of really fun, free things to do with the kiddos. I cannot say enough good things...I am a devoted customer! Shop small and local and be one too...this is a gem of a place!

Yelp
There aren't any Indy book stores where I live, so was thrilled to come across Green Bean Books. I've got an avid 6th grade reader and an 8th grader doing his best to abstain from reading all together. The owner was able to help me on both fronts and I walked about with six books for the kids. Owner was very knowledgable about her inventory, every book recommended she had read herself. So, there was no guessing, her choices were solid based on what I could tell her about my readers. And she even had a couple books for me after I sheepishly admitted to being a fan of the young adult post-apocalyptic genre. Great service, great selection.
google avatar

Root Canal C.

Yelp
Quite possibly the cutest and well curated children book store I have ever stepped into. If this were in San Diego, CA I would be in all the time. Admittedly, I buy most of my books on Amazon.com but here you just can't help being enchanted and delighted by the the thought that went into the selection and merchandising. I walked out with three books. Well done!
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
Great selection of books and great service. Staff is always willing to give suggestions but is not too intrusive while you're browsing. Really cute little place.
google avatar

Saira K.

Yelp
Super cute kids bookstore. We would have spent more time here if it was lunchtime and my kids hadn't just spent hours (and a good amount of $) at the toy store down the street.
google avatar

Becca S.

Yelp
This place is super cute. I came here for a book release party, and the illustrator read the book to the crowd on their covered outdoor patio. The inside of the store is small, but the walls are top to bottom covered in bookshelves and books. The collection looks well curated, and the book displays were all nice. I loved the fact that it looks like they put on regular book release parties, baby story times, and more (though the outside space is probably pretty chilly if it isn't a nice day). I would definitely recommend checking out their website for upcoming events as that seems to be what really makes this place stand apart from other book stores.

Yelp
In a city that loves books, this little gem is as good as it gets. It's quaint, intimate, and cozy and super duper kid-friendly. My inner child feels right at home in here, too. The staff uses adorable handmade popsicle stick book marks to indicate their favorite picks and recommendations. There's a range of picture books, books for young readers, and even a selection of YA lit. I bring all of my friends with kids here, and everyone finds something. This is the place to slow down and take your time browsing. There's even a snuggly couch! In the back room, there's a shelf of sale books where you can get pretty good deals! Can't gush enough about Green Bean Books!
google avatar

Jenni S.

Yelp
Truly the most beautiful children's book stores i have ever entered. The window! I could have looked at it for an hour. The selection is beautifully displayed with little treasures tucked throughout. A book lovers dream come true!

Jordana J.

Yelp
Great selection. Unfortunately we had to browse on the porch with staff bringing out books with our suggestion. Totally understandable given the current pandemic. I suggest looking online first then requesting specific books to browse. I wish I'd known this prior to going over. Fortunately they had great books and we found some awesome ones! The sole staff member was super helpful. We hope to come back when we can browse in person.

Yelp
Portland, Children's Literature and Alberta Street are by far a few of my favorite things in life, so it's natural that I would quickly fall in love with the fabulous Green Bean Books. Housing both new and used selections, this spunky little shop has enough books, gadgets, and events to entertain everyone that stops by. Being the organization freak that I am, I no doubt appreciate the thoughtful organization of the wide assortment of books. My favorite section is by far the Science area where the Earth/Space, Life, and Physical Science books are all separated so I can easily find appropriate fiction and non-fiction books that compliment my Science lessons. In addition to content specific areas, books are grouped into the developmentally sound categories of: baby/toddler, picture, middle reader, youth adult, and adult. I have noticed in the general fiction (especially picture) books have also been categorized into themes such as back to school, friendship, death, bullying, etc. to serve as a wonderful resource for the gifts and curveballs life throws. Aside from books, there are lots of random and entertaining findings around the shop like: a mustache machine, finger puppet machine as well as trinkets like the highly explosive and dangerous box that you should not open at all. Periodically, the wonderful and adorable staff also organize events like story time for the little ones, author visitations and educator/librarian nights. I recently attended the education event that which was a ton of fun (with a small group of like minded educators, helpful book talks of recent releases, raffles and wine...what else could you ask for?!?)! I can only hope that more events like that will be in the future, but until then I will keep stopping by for staff recommendations and checking out their goodreads account. While I would love to keep this shop under the radar and all to myself, I can't help but recommend it to everyone. If Jenny C (aka Miss I-think-kids-are-sticky-and-weird) can survive and even like this store, I am positive that everyone will find a bit of joy stopping by.
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
This is my fantasy bookstore come true. Lots of little magical knick knacks and "machines" based on popular children's books. They also have a small, good collection of books for adults too if you feel left out. If you want to foster reading in your kids (or anybody's kids for that matter) you should bring them here. Love this place!
google avatar

Lena W.

Yelp
There is nothing bad about this shop at all that I can think of. I do find their adult book selection limited, but what limited adult books they carry are usually wonderful. The whimsical atmosphere and cosy little handmade touches to the shop are what really make this a place worth visiting again and again. From a mustache vending machine to little dioramas that depict different books, the ingenuity and creativity that goes into every little nook and cranny is very apparent. My favorite part: in the spring/summer time there is a tree/bush (I really don't know what it is) that you can crawl into and read inside of. I would have died to have a shop like this when I was my little book-nerdy kid self, and I hope that when I have children they can appreciate Green Bean Books just as much.
google avatar

Alyssa F.

Yelp
Adorable! Lots of books, organized by category and reading range. Also other cute stuff for children from erasers to onesies. Staff was friendly and helpful. And they even have a frequent buyers club where you get a free book! Story time and author readings also featured. Check out this killer neighborhood spot for the kid in you or the ones in your life.
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
I think one of the greatest crimes against literacy these days is putting childrens' books on Kindles. Sure it's convenient. But doesn't something seem wrong about saying, "Okay Suzie, grab the Kindle and pick out your bedtime story!"? Do yourself and your kids a favor and bring them to this darling little shop instead. Primarily the shop is devoted to children and youth books with a few games and toys designed to invoke curiosity and whimsy. There's even a comfy little sitting area in the back. Every nook and cranny is utilized. The adult section is decent and houses nearly every book group selection I've read in the last year. Most sections you would expect to find in a full size book store are represented, just slightly smaller in scope. I'm always a sucker for staff recommendations and theirs are useful. Prices? Reasonable, but not Amazon cheap either. The staff is incredibly friendly. It doesn't take much time to cover the entire space, but you'll be glad you stopped in.

Yelp
I was so thrilled to find this cozy, warm children's book store on Alberta. I don't even have kids, but I use my niece and nephew as an excuse to come here often and browse. The owner is so knowledgeable and helpful - I have no idea which books are right for my 6 year old niece, but I took her recommendation and my niece devoured the book. I got one for my nephew as well - Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog (I truly picked it because the hilarious illustrations made me chuckle!). There are also adorable little gift chotchkies tucked away on the shelves and on the counter, and there's a selection of grownup books conveniently located by the door. Yeah independent book store!
google avatar

Amani G.

Yelp
Treat your inner child, your child, your friends kids, your nieces your nephews even your neighbors will enjoy a book from Green Bean Books! They have an amazing staff and a book for every need. Also check out the website for great events!
google avatar

Ari C.

Yelp
Best kids shop in PDX! They have an amazing kiddo book selection, incredible trinkets and the best display window. The store also has a cozy feel that is essential to any book buying experience. You can stay and visit with the books comfortably before your purchase. It's small enough that my kids are not overwhelmed but large enough to keep them finding something new with each visit. The staff are always soooo helpful. They really try to understand what each kid is looking for by asking key questions, finding out what they have read and enjoyed previously and they always point us towards great options in a totally non-pushy but really helpful manor. I also want to add that this is the very best place to buy birthday gifts or gift cards for kid friends. They will wrap your gift and there are cool tiny things everywhere to make gifts extra special. So yeah...I like this store a ton. My kids love it. You should go there and buy books and support an awesome local business! What!?!? I almost forgot...they have such amazing events!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little bookshop for kids!!! The clerk was very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. It can feel a little crowded with a handful of people, but everyone was friendly. Overall a great experience, thank you!!!
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
What a magical place. Take your book-loving kids here, of course. More importantly, take your reluctant readers here! Wonderful displays, amazing selection, darling merchandise, varied and delightful story and craft times. This place is just a delight.
google avatar

Deborah C.

Yelp
Cute place with wonderful selection. The guy working here could have used a bit friendlier personality. Was short and snarky with me but I purchased three books anyways. Typically with this type of experience I would have gone home and ordered from Amazon instead but the sun was shining, it was warm and gorgeous outside and I was in a great mood.
google avatar

Allison F.

Yelp
They have a great selection of books, and very knowledgable staff! Earl always helps me find books that are age appropriate and entertaining for the kiddo I'm buying for. I also love their window displays!!
google avatar

Mira G.

Yelp
The store is amazing. We went in today and spend some time with my kids there. We were looking for a sports book, which they did not have however the man who was working behind the counter took special care to find a book that was relevant for my son. He's already halfway through it! Love love love this space and the creative shadow boxes, books and gifts so thoughtfully selected and displayed within. Make time to visit. You will not regret it!!!
google avatar

Clarissa R.

Yelp
We come here at least once a week with our two-year-old son. The selection is wonderful, the couch is cozy, the outdoor patio is sweet, and Earl not only has great book recommendations but is a kind and lovely person to boot.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
A great kids book store that exceeds all expectations! When my wife and I first entered this store we weren't quite sure. It is small. But, much like the Harry Potter stories, the place is larger than expected. Books galore, with a knowledgeable staff that helps you choose the best books for the young ones in your life. On top of it all, you can buy mustaches in a vending machine. On top of it all, we learned that they also cater to adults, and can order any books you desire.
google avatar

Leah H.

Yelp
Best children's book store I've been to in Portland. I'm so glad I stopped in today! It's much larger inside than it looks from the outside. I didn't have much time to explore, but look forward to visiting again.

K A.

Yelp
I was disappointed when we were told we couldn't use a chinook book coupon because my daughter was paying with a gift certificate. The coupon does say it can't be used with "other discounts" but a gift certificate is not a discount. Someone went into the store a few days earlier and paid cash for the exact same value as the gift certificate. I have never heard of a store who had that policy.

Yelp
We found an event thru PDX children Calendar stating MLK Day Friendship Garland Craft at Green Bean Books. This was our first time here, walked in and automatically got greeted and asked if we need help finding something special. The moment we walked in, we could tell it was a very special place- not only there were books for sale but also small stuffed animals, hand puppets between the shelves and other small book related toys. We ended up staying more than 1hr, the couch, comfy chair makes it so warm and inviting and all the shelves labeled so everything is easy to find. This is one of those small nooks you enjoy going to on a rainy day withy your toddler or friend for toddler Storytime play dates, absolutely loved it, highly recommended and will defiantly be come back soon & referring our friends. I also see they have a FB page which I already 'Liked' I'm looking forward to many visits and events here :))

Yelp
I didn't know this little gem was even here, but went in and LOVED It. They have a wonderful hand picked selection of childrens, middle grade and young adult books, and a small selection for adults too. The owner is friendly and really knows her stuff. Definitely the reason I love Indie bookstores.

Teresa F.

Yelp
I love this store! It is an auntie and teacher haven. I have found books and games to play with my 8 year old nephew, and in the meantime I have found several amazing books that I can share with my 4th graders. My newest favorite is the one on Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It made the whole idea of the Supreme Court come alive for my students.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
We went to a craft event and story time---both my 4 and 6 year olds had a great time. The staff is really knowledgable, but they pretty much have curated all the best books for kids ages 0-10.

alanna m.

Yelp
This store is AMAZING! Its very family friendly, and has some awesome story times. The owner is super sweet, knowledgeable, and helpful! She has the best selection, all the classics you could ever need or want and then a huge selection of really well written and illustrated stories! Every time I go in I find something great! Aside from just the warm, sweet atmosphere they also stock TONS of books with characters of all ethnic backgrounds, and she carries new and used books.
