11 of Austin’s Most Refreshing Summer Sips | Eater

"Known for its bar-branded canned drinks and “Adult Capri Sun” slurps (try Feel the Burn), Green Light Social is an irreverent, good time bar located on West Sixth Street. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the wall mural emblazoned with the tagline, “Come early, stay late, get lucky.” Enjoy the flavor of downtown Austin’s original Sixth Street party scene on the dance floor, then escape to the rooftop for some fresh air and quieter conversation." - Vox Creative

Enjoyed their happy hour drink specials and outside patio that overlooks west Sixth Street. The margarita and frozen espresso martini were good. They have bar seating and several tables inside and outside. There is paid street parking on surrounding streets.

Green Light Social was such a fun and memorable experience! The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, but what truly made our night stand out was the incredible service from Alexis. Tucked away in the hidden speakeasy bar (which is a gem on its own), Alexis brought so much positive energy to the space. She was personable, attentive, and genuinely made us feel like regulars even though it was our first time. Her drink recommendations were spot-on, and her warm, upbeat attitude set the tone for a fantastic night. If you’re in town, don’t miss this spot and definitely seek out the speakeasy! We’ll be back for sure.

Google
Good drinks, attentive bartenders, fun crowd. Door staff was excellent too. Deuce is the only security whose name I got, but he's the perfect example: courteous, head on a swivel type who was focused on his job and professional while still being respectful and sociable with everyone around him. He and his guys really made this place feel safe and that made it easier for me to enjoy myself. That's pretty rare downtown these days. I enjoyed this club and their staff. Check them out if you get the chance.

Google
Green Light Social was such a fun spot! The vibe was great, and one of the highlights of our night was the bartender, Alexis. She was super friendly, always smiling, and gave us great recommendations when we couldn’t decide on drinks. Her upbeat energy really made us feel welcome. She is in the hidden speakeasy bar, and it was such a cool surprise! Definitely a must-see if you're visiting. Great drinks, great atmosphere, and amazing service. We’ll absolutely be coming back!

Came in this past weekend and i haven’t been downtown in awhile and decided to pop into Green light. I didn’t leave. I was chilling all night. Invited some friends to come meet up and had a great night. The bartenders were all super chill, and Deuce the security guy was super dope! Chatted with him for a bit and throughout the night he would check in and make sure me and my friends were good and if we needed anything. It was really nice knowing deuce was actually looking out for us

Google
To be honest this is the only bar that I like to go to on west Great music , great atmosphere, great staff. Also I found they have a speak easy and that was actually the highlight of my night. The atmosphere and the conversations were unfathomable in Bennys room. Alexis was my bartender and she was so kind, genuine, accommodating, and even told us why this place was so cool. Being able to hold a real conversation with my bartender is a big + for me and she did that I definitely will be back with friends and will just remember “are you at capacity”

I went out with friends for one of their birthdays, heard Green Light Social was fun, and showed up to great service! A gentleman named Duece met us on the stairs us & showed us to VIP where we were set up with some of the best espresso martinis I’ve ever had! The bar tender was pleasant & attentive (I missed her name), and we had a great time. Music was so good & the crowd had great energy!

Google
We had so much fun at Green Light the other night. My wife, and I were lucky enough to go into Benny's Room, the Speakeasy inside Green Light. What a beautiful space! Alexis our bartender was amazing! Highly suggest everyone check this place out. You won't be disappointed
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Doesn't get any better than going to see Alexis in Benny's Room! Ambiance, service, and quality of drinks can't be overstated. Would absolutely recommend, and will be returning soon! 10/10

Yelp
Jazmin was the freaking best she is the fastest bartender I've ever seen in my life I got my drink before I even ordered it!

Amber C.

Yelp
My favorite place to stop in when I'm in Austin. The best bartender in town Alexis not only makes an amazing martini but she is so kind and sweet. The ambiance to intimate great for conversations but also the best place for girls night out! My check out this spot next time you're in town!
google avatar

Kaylee T.

Yelp
Jazmin really added to my experience at Greenlight!! She was so kind and gave great energy. I will come back just for her!

Yelp
Green Light Social isn't exactly what I'd call a classy establishment. The space is tight both indoors and outdoors, and you're always having to viciously squeeze through to get anywhere. No help either when you have bottle service girls charging through with sparklers to get to their elite customers. However... the private speakeasy is its one saving grace (iykyk). I love the speakeasy wholeheartedly. The drinks in the speakeasy are noticeably better, the vibe is much classier, the space has its own DJ, and the ambiance feels like a completely different world. Bonus: watching vain and/or rowdy people while they are unaware through a one-way mirror is A+. Overall, I'd give it 2 stars for the main space and 4 stars for the speakeasy.
google avatar

A T.

Yelp
Alexis is definitely the best bartender here! Fast, amazing multitasker and the best attitude and great conversation! Love her

Rachel W.

Yelp
Jazmin was my bottle girl on my birthday. We had the best time! The set up is nice. I like the frozen drinks from the bar as well. Excellent service.

Duece K.

Yelp
I'm actually a current manager here. I've worked at many bars/clubs in Dt Austin now for 18.5yrs straight. This place is by far the best operated and most well kept. The entire industry here in Austin should be taking notes. There's a reason this place is always busy after 8yrs in business, it's just "the top" in Austin Tx. Highly recommend.

G J.

Yelp
Service and atmosphere was great! Alexis was a damn good bartender and made sure we were taken care of...definitely recommend and will be back!
google avatar

Maria J.

Yelp
Alexis bartender in speakeasy room was amazing. Will definitely come back! We enjoyed our drinks and service was excellent.

Vivian P.

Yelp
Had an amazing time thanks to Alexis behind the bar! The drinks and service were absolutely on point. Highly recommend stopping by, you're in great hands.

Kassandra P.

Yelp
Had such an amazing night out!! This is the perfect place to go have amazing drinks!!! Big shout out to Alexis for making our experience GREAT!! will definitely be back again!

Tirso T.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Austin. Great location and the staff is amazing. My favorite bartender Alexis is in the Speakeasy in the back of the bar. She makes the best drinks!

Butch B.

Yelp
Green Light Social is a very interesting bar and a lot of fun. Alexis is the greatest bartender! 5 stars for Alexis

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Hey guys, if you are looking for a place to grab a few cold ones , hang with your friends and be greeted by the friendliest bartender ever , head on down to Green Light Social on 6th St and ask for Alexis! She will greet you with the biggest smile ever and serve you up a mean cocktail! One of the best bartenders around! #gls #bestserviceever

Yelp
This is a small club on West 6th St. The music here is usually pretty good, and I like taking pictures in the big mirrors. The small size means it gets crowded, and it's a fun time. I like their patio area to escape to if it gets too stuffy inside. My friend got her phone stolen here, so beware of pickpockets.

Yelp
Green Light Social --- practices racist enforcement of its dress code if my experience is evidence. On 5/21/2023 I showed up at the bar, having attended many times over the years--not once did I hear of a dress code, despite being VERY casual in dress in many occassions (both myself and other patrons I've noticed). The WhenWhereWhat Austin crew pushed for people to show up and support, so I did. At 5:17pm I took an uber to the bar (wearing white crocs, a Faze Clan jersey and athletic shorts---again no mention of a dress code anywhere AND the gallery indicates casual dress. The bouncer said to me "Umm, honestly, we have a dress code here." I left immediately and observed the patrons who apparently fulfilled the bouncer's dress code - almost all of whom were Caucasian, and as casually dressed as I or close to it (see picture). The bouncer's attitude was differently - he was proactively selling the 7th anniversary party..stark contrast. After noticing this disparity I took an uber and went to Uptown Sports Club instead, a more fancy high priced place that had no problem taking my $130 in food/drink, and went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. As a former VP of Human Resources I know racial discrimination when I see it. Minorities, professionals, other people from diverse backgrounds stay far away. Green Light Social - it's 2023, not 1963.

Yelp
What a cool place! My job had our last holiday party here and it was amazing! Great drinks, decor, and music! The party was up a few stairs so not sure if this place is accessible, but it opens up to an in door and outdoor sort of rooftop! There's two bars inside and outside and the drink selection is pretty vast! I had their whiskey cocktail and it was delicious! There's a good amount of seating inside and outside. The music was mostly greatest hits from hip hop to disco. The bathrooms are nice, clean, and have cute mirrors in the hall. There's a cool speakeasy inside behind the two way mirror. You can't bring drinks from the bar on the outside as they have their own bar inside, totally different vibe, like jazz music, dark lighting & sophisticated decor. There's lots of parking on the side streets, but none on sight; but of course you should take ride-share if you're going! As our party came to an end the actual club opened up to all! Their were bottle girls and the music changed to todays hits.

Frydda R.

Yelp
Devin is amazing , made sure the girls were all good and we had the best time !! We love green light !

Yelp
Horrifying experience. Went with a group of girls for a bachelorette party. Having a good time, until a bar tender was mopping the floor and became extremely violent because someone brushed against him "too closely and touched his butt". He had a clear anger issue and made us feel sooo uncomfortable. Came within inches of our face to be threatening. You've been warned haha ...
google avatar

Darlene N.

Yelp
We were traveling from Ohio and Green Light Social was recommended as an IT spot. It was a Wednesday in January and I realize they can't manifest a crowd but it was dead. No live music and standards drinks with higher prices.
google avatar

Keay A.

Yelp
I seriously love this place! It's location, atmosphere, staff...and not to mention the drinks! My go-to used to be the spiked Capri-sun, but now I'm currently obsessed with their Cherry Limeade. They have a nice wrap around patio that has an awesome view of downtown. I like that they also have a smaller bar on the patio, so we never really have trouble getting drinks quickly. The music is always something I can dance to and the staff make this place worth the 5 stars. We never miss a chance to pop into Green Light Social when we're downtown!
google avatar

Xia B.

Yelp
[I kid you not] While crossing the street to the #5 bus stop, the downstairs bouncer for this rooftop bar yelled to us "it's hot out, but we have AC, $5 spiked Capri-Suns & $5 margaritas upstairs." My friend and I hadn't even cross the street before she spotted us and preyed upon our weak sober souls. So of course, plans for the day were ruined because we got day-tipsy. We had great seating, strong drinks and play-fought around the rooftop like kids. Will I ever grow up?
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Austin, Green Light Social was one of the bars recommended to us by a local. There were other bars to check out along the way, but our group was sold once we heard "ADULT CAPRI SUNS." We stopped in on a Saturday around 6 pm. It wasn't crowded at all so we were able to easily order drinks from a really friendly bartender (whose name unfortunately escapes me). We all wanted the adult Capri Suns; we found out that they contain vodka, which one of the girls doesn't drink, so I asked for a tequila recommendation instead. The bartender suggested one that the girl (a self-described tequila lover and snob) ended up really liking. There's a great Instagrammable ivy wall outside, so get out there and take some pictures!

Bao Y H.

Yelp
Green Light Social was one of the best bars in the area. The music was good and people seemed to be really enjoying themselves, dancing and such. There wasn't a long wait when I went there in April of 2018 on a Sunday night and there was a good amount of people at the venue overall. I could see it being really crowded on a busier night/season but it wasn't much of a wait for me. I like their adult "Capri Sun" drinks. Who doesn't like a little nostalgia? I went there to celebrate my birthday and had a good time.

Yelp
Place is beautiful, bottle service girls are the worst here. Just minding our business dancing and they shove us tf out of their way.. as we walked in my friend warned me about this one girl with the fake lips and ofc she's the same girl that shoved us.. then came back at us and kept agonizing us as we were leaving and shoved my friend as they were walking out. Disgusting, u can't miss her fake ass lips/ avoid her.

Yelp
L I T // when something is turned up or popping (UrbanDictionary) The DJ had a fantastic assortment of music on a SUNDAY night. I was amazed by the nightlife and loved that this was our first stop after a HARD pregame. The music was bumping, and I was having a blast when we got asked to hang out at the VIP section and was treated so wonderfully thanks for our bachelorette uniforms! We were brought a bottle of champagne and gigantic tequila "shots" on the house, but we purchased a few drinks at the bars anyways. There was even a little photo booth with wonderful lighting to make little gifs or take photos that emails it to the information entered. Service was on point and hype, and I love the drinks they served us. When we ordered at the bar, it came out fairly quickly and strong. We were sufficiently hammered, and the AC kept up with the TX heat forsure. It felt comfortable inside but the sensations were overwhelming. There's an open floor area to smoke and get air. The views were lovely, and it wasn't packed outside at all. There was no cover, and every staff member we interacted with was professional and inviting. I would certainly come out here because the music selection was my favorite out of all the bars we hit. The crowd was polite and approachable. The drinks were strong. The interior was dark but had cool lights. It's worth your time to swing by and have fun if you enjoy top hits and an amazing DJ with great transitions.

Morgan B.

Yelp
If I could give this place less than one star, I would. I generally don't understand how they think they can treat their customers like they do. My friends and I came from ACL and were having a great time. We ended up going back to the speakeasy and came out to go to the bathroom, leaving our drinks there. When we asked the security guard if we could go back in he told me that me and my friends were giving him attitude? I honestly never said one word to him. There were only 3 other people inside and he wouldn't let me in to get my drink or friend. Idk what these people are on, but it isn't right. The security guard is on a power trip and it's honestly disgusting behavior. Do not spend your money here unless you want to be gaslit and insulted.

Richie L.

Yelp
Great bar but the rain surprised me just like I was surprised when my ex wife drained all my bank accounts. Brought my friend here and another surprise I had was my friend Ted kissed a girl for the first time in 26 years. Go dawgs
google avatar

Elvira S.

Yelp
Whew. Gross. Throw up MULTIPLE PLACES. Security told me two times in two different places that I should, "go wipe my feet because I am dancing in throw up" WOW.... Andrew however: Amazing bartender ! Courteous ! Friendly ! Warm smile !!!!!! He's outside ladies!!!! Go check it out!!!

Yelp
I never got around to giving this place a review but if you are a part of the LGBTQ+ community or consider yourself an ally, don't come here. I have come here once for a friends birthday party who got a table and at one point went to the bathroom with my boyfriend. As soon as we entered the bathroom, we were told by someone who worked there that we wouldn't be allowed to go in there together again or else we would be kicked out (because I guess they assumed that we were going to hook up or something? we fr peed and exited the bathroom). Put a weird taste in my mouth for the night, and recently a gay man has posted online that claims to have gotten into a fight with someone working there because he was being affectionate with his boyfriend in the club! It was a similar situation where the two went to the bathroom together later in the night and some worker thought they were hooking up and started using slurs and getting physical with them + kicked them out and beat them up pretty badly. @angelcastillo22022 on IG if you want the full story. I think the entire staff could probably use some training on interactions with queer people, ESPECIALLY since night life is so intertwined with queer culture. A club in a place as accepting as Austin should know that queer people going to the bathroom together is often a form of ensuring safety from bigoted people and we're not all deviants looking to get off next to a clogge toilet -- not that this place is even lively enough to warrant that type of fun anyway.

Yelp
What a dope spot! I've never been here before, but it met all my expectations and more. The location itself is pretty cool, upstairs so that you can see parts of Austin and it has a perfect patio area. Let's talk drinks. Normally when I go to a bar, I try one of their signature cocktails and then stick to my normal vodka drink. This place had so many options for me to try and each one was better than the last. I first had an adult Capri Sun and it was so good! A little childhood nostalgia mixed with vodka, sign me up. I had a couple of these throughout the night and had at least 2 different flavors. They also had group Capri Suns to share with your friends and they were BIG and also $28. We got milkshake shots next and they were basically normal sized drinks. I felt like I wasn't even drinking alcohol because it was so smooth. I didn't have a chance to make it inside, but I could see a large dance floor with room to dance!
google avatar

Ashley I.

Yelp
The only thing I liked about this bar is their photo area where you can take free photos and have them sent to your phone. As much as I liked this, however, it's probably worth taking your own photos and going to a different bar. My friends and I tried ordering pretty common shots and they refused to make them, which could only be the result of pure laziness. Aside from that, it took forever to get one drink and it seemed like the female bartenders were serving men before my friends and I (all women). The drinks are overpriced, and this bar gets WAY too crowded (to the point where people were rubbing up against me in ways that didn't feel consensual, and it felt like I was completing an obstacle course just trying to navigate to the bathroom and back).

Josx M.

Yelp
The bar doesn't ID people when they pay with card. Also a card was left there and charged himself 69.43 and another 45$. Also the card isn't registered in Austin it's registered in San Antonio.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
First time venturing a little more W of The Ranch on W 6th and came upon this bar. Recommended to us by the bartenders at North Italia on 2nd. If you're looking for a dance party you've come to the right place, this place only gets more packed as the night goes on so come early so you don't have to navigate through more people. The unique thing about this bar is some of their drinks are served in little Capri Sun pouches, lending to an interesting blend between nostalgia and alcohol. Got their Big Brother drink, unfortunately there's no CS pouches that serve in this size so we got a clear plastic bag haha. Drinks are fairly decent and the dance bar upstairs is pretty fun!

Yelp
Came here on a weeknight (around 10ish) to grab a drink and watch an NBA game. There weren't too many people around, but there was a decent crowd. The crowd is quite young, as it is in Austin. Not that I felt out of place per se (I was duly entertained haha). Mostly UT/recent grads, so this is the spot. I'm sure most patrons already know, but the "adult" Capri Sun's are the thing here. I don't personally drink that stuff, but that's the popular thing (and one thing that'll give you epic hangovers the next day). They have a photo booth that's kinda cool and a nice wrap around patio that overlooks 6th street, which is sweet. Ton of TVs as well. Also, if you're someone like myself (who came on vacation), hang around a bit later on the weeknights (or even weekends) and the bartender may give you a shot or drink on the house - that's a pro tip. With that said, some of the reviews seem quite problematic. I couldn't vouch for it, but it's quite concerning. Therefore, I'd have to give this place a 3 unless it's proven otherwise.

Katie M.

Yelp
There's a horribly awful barback named Pat who shoved me out of the way and instead of saying excuse me or apologizing, he said I could either calm down and get over it or leave.... I also work in the service industry and I get it when people are crowding and being annoying but not once did he ask for me and my friends to move or say anything. He just decided to completely shove me and then proceed to get mad at me for reacting about it. Definitely shouldn't have a service industry job if he doesn't know how to be polite to people.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
No matter if it's packed to the wall like a can of sardines or empty like the heart of anyone that's been on a dating app for over a year, Green Light Social always delivers. I've yet to encounter a salty bartender...and if I do witness a snarl, it's usually the result of a rude patron. Great jams ranging from late 90s to now - when there's a DJ, they know how to read the crowd. Special shout out to JR...the last time I was there it was a Wednesday night and we were the only patrons...he gave us a microphone and told us to use the bar as our stage and played any song we requested from Monifa's Touch It to the holiday Mariah Carey song. That's treating us less like customers and more like frennzzzzzz, and that made for a memorable evening!

Lauren L.

Yelp
As a Georgia fan, I love this bar & the atmosphere on Saturdays. As a human being, I feel the opposite. On Saturday, when I went to order, I was told the systems were down but not to worry, they'd write my order down and keep a manual tab. FOOLISH! I was overcharged by $30 because they couldn't keep track of it. I'm now having to wait till Wednesday when they are open again to even have the opportunity to ask for a refund for something they did. Very upset & pissed off that the amount I signed for on the receipt doesn't match what's on my bank account. Might need to choose a new bar to call the Dawgs at cause this ain't it

Erin E.

Yelp
Greenlight social is not a good bar to go to because they do not represent inclusivity or diversity. Two of my queer friends were wearing tank tops, and they would not let them in but as a straight woman I was wearing a top that would be considered, revealing, and they had no problem letting me in. Green light social is a homophobic bar and I would never recommend that anyone go there. They made it very clear that it is not a queer friendly environment.

Emily T.

Yelp
Love green light but the outdoor bartender (Alexis) is very slow and bias to get the mens orders first...tea

Jake B.

Yelp
Me and my friends got thrown out (we are transgender / LGBTQ. The bouncers said "your kind is not welcome here" - would never go again. After this traumatic experience I'd rather go anywhere else.

Karen C.

Yelp
Staff is horrible, honestly the worst bar in Austin don't waste your time. They try to scam you and the drinks are expensive and horrible.staff is trashy and gross

Fernando M.

Yelp
Wouldn't recommend going for food or drinks. A lot of other better places for that in close proximity. Service is fast for how busy it can get but the drinks are mid at best. Main stream edm and regular music, MTV DJs but not real DJs.

Daniel H.

Yelp
Was at this bar with a group of friends, and one of the bouncers literally kicked out my friend (and in turn, my group of friends) for no discernable reason. Allegedly, he was bumping into the the dj console on the stage, but I and no one I was with witnessed this behavior. Seems like the bouncer let the miniscule power he held go to his head. This is an absolute clown show of an establishment, and there's plenty of other bars on West 6th that deserve your patronage more than this fiasco.
google avatar

Tori P.

Yelp
Deff the best bar on west 6th! Any of these bad comments are just from a bunch of HATERSSS. This is all my friends fav bar because they play the best music & have the nicest bartenders. Catch me there either on Saturdays or sundays ;)) ****BTW I have plenty gay & black/Mexican friends and never have they ever denied entry because of this some of y'all are just weak minded & believe everything involves that

Kathia R.

Yelp
Went with my fiancé and sister and the bouncers did not let my sister in because she had an international ID, we confronted them saying that was very discriminatory and they said it was the managers orders to not accept any type of international IDs. From the attitude received by the bouncers I can tell it's not a welcoming club and they lack common sense and a better judgement. I would not support a place with these type of policies and will definitely not come back.

Dylan R.

Yelp
They wouldn't accept a valid Maryland drivers license. Not much more to say. Friends and I all had to leave because the bouncer said my card didn't feel right.
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
This weekend, I witnessed this bar systematically deny black men entry into the private club section that is located upstairs. We were here to see a friend's show. The two black men ahead of us in line were denied entry and I naively assumed they simply weren't on the list; however, when it came time for us to be let in, they allowed entry to all the people in my group but the one black man. I even had fewer people with me than the list said I was allowed to have. So when they wouldn't let my friend in, we were like screw this racist place, and then the bouncer tried to block us from leaving. Are you serious?! I now see from other reviews on here, this is a common practice of this bar. If you think racism sucks, I highly suggest you take your business elsewhere. This bar ain't nothin' but white supremacist trash.
