"At Green Russell, a throwback to the speakeasy era, there are several themed flights of, say, Sherry and Port cask–finished Scotch or whiskeys from unexpected places like India and Taiwan. There are also about a dozen seasonal cocktails. Maybe you’ll try a Spellbound with honey butter–infused cachaça, pear brandy and liqueur, and hints of vanilla one visit, a Grimm’s Goblet with gin, aquavit, strawberry-infused Campari, and essences of tomato and thyme the next. Once you’re convinced the team has got what it takes, go with the bartender’s choice. Then just relax: one of the rules here is “Please be patient"—a polite way of saying that the staff doesn’t tolerate the rowdy, beer-guzzling hordes that run rampant through so many LoDo bars." - Ruth Tobias

"The underground bar is dedicated to specialty libations and cocktails. Green Russell, named for 1850’s Colorado gold miner William Green Russell, looks like a Prohibition-era cocktail joint," - Camila Navarrette, Gigi Sukin, Susan Stapleton

Went on a Friday night around 9pm. Was packed. Corn bread stole the show here. Cocktails were super pricey, wine was reasonable and delicious. They have an odd policy that you can’t order food if you’re at the front bar area…(why?) So we waited to be seated in the back. Service was friendly but slow. At one point the bartenders put on a random fire show blowing flames out of there mouth. That gained them another star :) Ambiance was great. The farther back you go, the better in atmosphere. There’s a random telephone booth that just adds to the mystique. My date got the BLT bites that were missing the ‘L’, he still seemed to enjoy them. Being a vegan, I was not impressed, but that’s another review not for here….

Green Russell is under Latimer Street and often has a wait for a table or bar seat. The wait is well worth it. The drinks and service are both incredible. Even if you don't like the cocktails (or mocktail) on the menu, the bartender will make you something custom if you share the spirit and flavors you like. In June we visited in celebration of my mom who passed away 12 years ago. When we mentioned it would have been her birthday, they made me her favorite drink and wrote her name on the top of the drink. Just incredible and a moment I'll never forget.

Totally funky speakeasy hidden away down some stairs off Larimer Square. They have excellent bar food, like smoked Mac and Cheese and these super rich but tasty pretzel cheese curd things! Everyone I was with ordered off the cocktail menu. They have all the usual suspects, old style and new style. They also offer their own seasonal creations. The best of those was the Spring Voyage, made with gin, green chartreuse, vermouth, liquor 42, shiso, lemon grass, and a lime leaf. It was herbal and funky, and delicious. I had a corpse reviver 2. They not only knew what it was, but they made a perfect one. I really do love craft cocktails, and this place is great. A special shout out to the hostess. She was amazing. I asked her if this was where the speakeasy was, and she said "I don't know. Is it?" She was charming and witty! And full of interesting old Denver stories. This is a must-try place. Have fun looking for it!

Good barbeque with two great atmospheres and super friendly wait staff. I've walked by many times but before today have never made it inside. Host was chatty in the best sort of way and offered me a seat on the "steakhouse" side while I waited for availability in the "speakeasy." I opted for the brisket sandwich with tallow fries and a draft beer. While the fries could have been less seasoned, the tallow sweetness still shone through. I have no complaints about the brisket; it was perfect. Their sauces were similarly on point. After my meal, a table opened up on the dimly lit side, where I described my typical drinks to an attentive bartender. He delivered a 6 ingredient smoked drink with a twist of orange that definitely satisfied. Great experience overall. I will definitely visit again soon.

I stopped in for a cocktail on my way to the airport. The atmosphere was swanky and amazing. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about cocktails. I had the fruit basket it was very refreshing. My only nit pick was that the drinks were a little pricey, I paid 20 dollars for one drink.

Found this place by accident and it's in my favourites list now! This is a speakeasy from the prohibition era and is kept as is - very different vibe from what I've see at most other bars! Dim lit ambience with comfortable seating. Staff was super friendly and nice. I got the Clover club and husband got the penicillin - both so good. We also got the brisket biscuits - very buttery and the brisket was well smoked and flavory! They also have a smokehouse next door and the food comes from the same kitchen- definitely want to try the bbq place. All in all - great experience and I absolutely recommend! Coming back soon :)

Very disappointing experience here after being recommended by a friend of a friend. I only give 2 stars instead of 1 as our server was delightful. At least while they were there that is. We had about an hour and a half before a booking nearby so we thought we'd check it out. We first had to wait 15 minutes on a list which is fine, I'm used to that sort of thing now for potentially busy places which I assumed this was. We were told that we can stay for a total of 90 minutes which we were ok with as we had dinner plans anyway. We each needed a pick-me-up so we each ordered an espresso martini hoping a bit of caffeine would wake us up. Forty minutes later we still hadn't received our drinks. Our waiter came by and said sorry for the wait and poured us some sparkling wine which we thought was nice. Until another twenty minutes went by and we still didn't receive our drinks. With no assurance on when we would receive our drinks (waiter didn't return) and realising that we would have to chug our expensive cocktails if we received them (due to a reservation elsewhere) we decided to leave. For a place that tells us we can only stay for 90 minutes, it seems as if you only have time to indulge in one cocktail assuming you actually receive it.

The Green Russel is a hidden gem, walk down stairs and through a back room into a very legitimate feeling speakeasy with mixologists mixing up some of the best craft cocktails I have had in a very long time... Each drink is made by hand to order and you can expect the production to take a few minutes per drink. Amazing find!

Yelp
This is actually one of the coolest places I have ever been. There was a bit of I wait to sit in the actual restaurant so we were offered to go to the bar... My friends and I were by no means expecting a speakeasy through those doors. Being in that back room makes you feel so cool. And no matter what you were drinking you just feel a little giddy inside as you drink. The Cosmo was absolutely delicious. And the barbecue food was even better. We got the cheese curds and the mac & cheese as appetizers and then for dinner we got the Pit beef sandwiches.
