I lived in San Bernardino for 28 years and never ate at the Green Shack. I drove past it many times and never had the slightest desire to check it out. One day after seeing a video on YouTube, I had to see what it was all about! Do yourself a favor and don't wait 28 years to try this amazing place. The vibes are welcoming, layout is unorthodox and the food is some of the best food I've eaten in San Bernardino. We tried the "definitely smash burger" lol... and the "green shack signature". This sandwich and burger were delicious! I highly recommend visiting this place asap!

I do love the fact that these little places exist and you can tell they have been here forever. But there are concerns with this place for sure. Before let me tell you that the prices are still reasonable. The food still OK. I had a small Tuna and it was really good. The tuna was not stinky, it didnt smell or tasted old. I was very pleased with it. I would had prefer lettuce intead of the coldslaw and I will tell you why below. Besides the tuna, the pickles and the coldslaw there was nothing else, even though the presentations showed more veggies. I also had the Nashville chicken sandwich with fries. The chicken patty's breading was good not heavy and the chicken had a spicy flavor but it wasnt spicy. Again, instead of lettuce it had coldslaw. And even though I paid $1 for jalapeños I ended getting five slices that were mostly butts. The buns were really good. But the coldslaw made them soggy and it was too much it took away from the chicken flavor. Now lets talk about the elephant in the room.... this is so you know what youre walking into and know what to expect. First, the service is closer to terrible than ok. And that goes for the girl taking the order to the girls doing the sandwiches. It can be a lot better. Customer service is not there strong quality at all. Second, I didnt get to see what grading this place has but it needs cleaning and better food handling. The person doing both of my sandwiches had gloves that he used to open and close the latches on the prepping station and the fridge. But then he opened the coldslaw and with the same gloves he scoop a handful of the coldslaw and placed it in both of my sandwiches. Not with a spoon or spatula but with his hands even though the latches on both appliances are open and close constantly and most likely are dirty. I didnt see one cleaning rag at all. I saw another girls taking out the trash and cardboard at the same time she was prepping a sandwich, I get you want to multitask but not with my food... please!!! My sanwich came with fries, but the oil that the fries were being fried smelled like it had been used for days, it was passed the usage and most likely the heat threshold so it was fuming. I couldnt eat my fries because they tasted like burned stalled oil. If you can, order because if you see how they prep the food, you probably won't eat it. Again, am grateful I have this place so close and I did love the tuna but the way the food was prepped left me stomach sick. So thread lightly and if you see something say something. At the end of the day we are paying for a service and instead of just making this the standard we need to say something so they can be better. I want this place to be better so I can feel good about eating their food.

Google
This is a tough review. The food was amazingly good! I had the Joker and wife had the Rome sandwich. Both very good! The Mac salad had a unique flavor and it was tasty. The place? Strange it’s a convenience store that serves sandwiches. Half of the menus were off. No one seemed to be wearing any health safety hair nets or gloves. The place looked like it needs a deep cleaning. I was surprised it took 20 minutes for two sandwiches but the young woman told us it could easily take 45! There is no where to sit inside so we sat outside in the patio. That place needs some serious love. It’s unique with trees everywhere but it looks like I’m eating in an alley. Doors were dirty and the place just needs some serious attention to some upgrades. I love it that it has been here for a long time and I want yo support local businesses, I just wish they invested more in themselves. If you want a great sandwich, come here, just take it home and enjoy it.

Google
Ordered delivery and got a meatball sub (large), and the esquites. The meatball sub was outrageously good. The bread is nice and soft but it held firm and didn’t become a soggy mess from the marinara, which happens a lot with meatball sandwiches. The meatballs were also very tender, which is something else that a lot of places seem to drop the ball on. Sauce was delicious, plenty of cheese, great sandwich all around. The corn was also quite tasty, though do be warned it’s got a decent bit of heat (or at least mine did). I liked that and thought it was really good, but something to be aware of. Solid, solid local spot.

Google
It was the absolute best pastrami sandwich I have ever had. I recommend the joker and the thief. Pastrami and Brisket, come on! You can't go wrong. The sides are AWESOME as well. The staff were friendly and service with a smile. I will be craving this place. I can see why this place is a San Bernadino staple. GREAT FOOD !!!!!!!!! Thank you to the young man who helped me. You, sir, have a great attitude, and it was a pleasure talking with you.

Google
The sandwiches here are delicious - definitely worth the wait! The market itself is nothing fancy, and the neighborhood may not be the most polished, but don’t let that stop you. Hidden gems are often found in the most unexpected places, and this one is a winner!

Google
The BREAD ZFPPFLIN was 10/10 🔥 The Joker and the thief 9/10 🔥 The jalapeño potato salad 10/10 🔥 Definitely would come back here

Google
Though very friendly the phillycheese like sandwhich was too greasy, too salty and the meat was hard, my husband enjoyed his pastrami but was overly salty too. The mac salad was the nastiest ive ever had. Old, hard and no taste

Yelp
THE BEST. It's not about "if you know, you know". Everybody knows this is top tier. I've been getting sandwiches for a cool minute but just recently tried the smash burger. Amazing.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for almost a year now. I drive by most days on my way to work, the reviews seem pretty solid, etc. Some colleagues grabbed takeout a couple of weeks ago. The Wednesday special (pastrami Sammy and fries) as tasty but the wait for them to return to work was a little excessive. We like to patronize nearby restaurants for group meetings we host at our work location so I convinced three other colleagues to visit today in hopes of trying more options for an upcoming meeting. We ordered online at 11:32 am; shortly after I received a confirmation email saying our order would be ready by 12:33 pm. Four of us left work to pick up the order and hopefully enjoy lunch at the location in a small garden area there?? I never got to see where they had hoped to sit. We arrived at 12:35 pm to find a long line of people. I was told at 12:40 pm that they were working on our order. Around 12:50 pm, I finally saw the young lady who would be working on our order turn our ticket around to read and start preparing it. While waiting, we stood in front of the counter by their grill. At about 1:05 pm, the young lady preparing our food informed me that they had run out of wheat bread so she "just made it on white bread." My friend commented that it was not right that she had made that decision on her own, especially since some people have allergies, etc. It's not like we hadn't been there for quite some time for her to ask us if it was OK and this was simply not good customer service. She was not happy that he had stated his opinion but kept doing what she was doing and seemed very "too bad, so sad" about it. When the order was done she just placed the bag on the counter and walked away. We finally walked out with our order at 1:12 pm and had to head straight back to work since our lunch hour was consumed waiting. We got back to work, divvied up our order and that was that. My cold "When in Rome" was pretty good; it had flavor and good textures. My friends said their "Bread Zeppelin" and "Swine" sandwiches were "just okay." I can't accept a 1 hour + 45 minute wait time for sandwiches, I am not sure if we will be back and I am certain we won't use them for a group catering order. I have ZERO confidence that they would have our order done on time even with 24-hour required notice. As we were leaving another customer stopped and asked me what time we had placed our order and if it was online. After telling her "Yes" she said "Dang, we are in the same place as you. We ordered around 11:15 am." She was super disappointed, as well. Having been a former restaurant manager, I also can't begin to tell you some health concerns I noticed in the time that we were waiting. I do wish them all the best! With the amount of people waiting patiently for their food, they must be doing something right, I just don't believe I can intentionally make that choice again.

Yelp
I'm born and raised in San Bernardino and this is the first time I have ever eat here. Not located in the greatest area of San Bernardino, but being raised here it didn't bother me. We must have come right before rush hr because by the time we left there as a long line. Everyone was nice, and the wait time was a little long but the sandwiches were worth the wait. We ordered the following items and our review for each Green Shake signature- it was a good sandwich over all except a little heavy on the mayo and not enough oil and vinegar When in Rome- good sandwich, the bread was a little too toasted for my liking so next time I'll request my bread not to be toasted Smash or pass- the burger patties were leaking in a little flavor. The fries were not their favorite they said they little oily.

Yelp
Hidden in San Bernardino, no not the best neighborhood, no not the newest building, but the food and customer service are great! Good food takes a minute to come out but they make it fresh to order. There is a small liquor store and a drink shop inside as well. A 20 minute drive from where I live but well worth it. Get there early

Yelp
Food was amazing. Ordered the Joker, their pastrami sandwich. Loved how their pastrami was grilled, with onions on a bread. Service takes a bit but you know that sandwich is coming out hot and fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden gem that's been part of San Berdo for years! Had me the 12" Joker & Thief... Come hungry because the meat portions are filling. Very tasty, best sandwich I've had. Quotes of the day are an added bonus...lol.. A definite must of you're in the area!

Yelp
Amazing Taste! Our company pre-ordered a 36 inch sandwich with meat & veggies/ tomato the side. Wow it was delicious! This was an easy task to order and pickup. Keep in Mind they place the sandwich on a board that needs to be returned &. Deposit is given back. Overall happy bellies from the great food & experience. Thanks GS for a great sandwich again!!!!
google avatar

Rusty C.

Yelp
Had the joker on a roll and the green shack on squaw bread. The pastrami was hot and tasty and the roll nice and toasty. Good portions of meat. The green shack on squaw bread was delicious. It's hard to find places that have squaw bread but that's a great choice for this sandwich. Also had the street corn side and it was good. The Mac side was ok and the potato salad had to much salt so nothing special about the sides but the sandwiches were delicious.

James M.

Yelp
Laziest workers. Took over 40 minutes to make five to eight sandwiches for all the five customers waiting. Asked for a refund due to wait and was rudely refused. Will never come back. What a joke.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food Miss their Lobster Mobster Sandwich but the food is good. also the business has great electronic services while you wait on your food
google avatar

Jessica M.

google avatar

David D.

Yelp
The best hidden gem in San berdoo. The prices are great and the portions are huge. The very best thing about green shack is the menu that tastes so so good. Seriously the food is the best tasting I've had in years.
google avatar

Sandra C.

Yelp
Tried the green shack signature sub as recommended by Hashslices on IG . It was pretty good ! I give it a good 8/10 .
google avatar

Nicholas T.

Yelp
Interesting location (shared space inside with a liquor store, travel agency, coffee shop and something else...), but the sandwiches are good.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
The food is really good but the wait time is pretty ridiculous. I placed an order online 30 minutes before I showed up. Still had to wait over 40 minutes for when I showed up.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Dynamite food! Watch out, because they run out of things - make sure you call in your order (don't do it online) to make sure you're get what you're angling for. But when you do... ka-kow! It's gonna be delicious and big enough for two meals. The cold sandwiches are dynamite; I stay away from the hot sandwiches now b/c I've found them to be too salty for me? But what can I say, The Green Shack keeps me coming back when I'm around.
google avatar

Yelp
I've heard about this place for over 20 years! Not sure why I waited so long to try it, but glad I did! This was one of the most amazing sandwiches I've ever had! Fresh and made to oder. I had the cold cut snack attack on squaw bread with a side of jalapeno potato salad. My husband had the 8 baller meatball sub smothered with melted mozzarella cheese! Both were AMAZING We will definatley be back!!

e p.

Yelp
Amazing tuna melt people have friendly service seating area in back. Boys likes the Italian.

Clary T.

Yelp
First time ordering from this shop, i was surprised. Ordered the signature sandwich, it was great. Fresh tasty food! Was not a fan of the macaroni salad.
google avatar

Cindy V.

Yelp
Bad area but you have to get past it for the food and service both very good. Like stepping in a different world. Highly recommended. Amazing

Yelp
Best sandwiches in the IE!! This place is great. Love how fresh the bread and deli meat is!

Yelp
The service was great as soon as we walked in. We got a very warm and personal welcome. Feels like those bomb food places you find hidden in the middle of Chicago. The sandwich shack is inside a liquor store. The wait was terribly long for a sandwich. I kept seeing people walk in, order and walk out with their food. I was definitely waiting long for my food. They don't have vegan option which is why I added an updated menu. I came here for a vegan sandwich they had five months ago according to another review. Parking was on site. There is no seating inside. The sandwich itself was okay. I asked for it with no cheese and advised I was vegan. They proceeded to add mayo on the "lettuce entertain you". I didn't go back because I waited 35 min for my sandwich. I'm sure if you eat meat, this place is amazing as many people came after us. I won't return.

Yelp
Heard about this being a San Bernardino staple for decades so we were really excited to try it. The Green Shack is a local neighborhood spot and the inside is clean. The employees and regulars are extremely nice so the service was a 10/10. The menu is GREAT. There's so many options, including sides and desserts. We ordered five sandwiches and all of them were great, especially the Joker and Thief, Don't Have a Cow, and the Green Shack Signature. We will definitely be back to try all of the things on the menu, it's so lovely being able to support a high quality and local spot.
google avatar

Nancy E.

Yelp
Staff is friendly and efficient. Great sandwiches. Small shop with a lot of services.
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
I want so badly to give this place five stars because I LOVED the food. Big, filling, fatty sammies packed with flavor. The staff gave great recommendations. Inside a liquor store, kind of an interesting location. There's bare basic seating out back. The lack of star is the wait - both waiting to order and then waiting for food to come out.
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
I've been ordering food from here for years but the last couple times have been very disappointing. I decided to give it one last try and ordered the "Lettuce Entertain You" sandwich that was supposed to have lettuce, tomato, red onions, bell pepper and avocado. What I ended up getting was a sandwich loaded with spinach, pepperoncini and two slivers of avocado. I ordered it off of DoorDash and I know that restaurants have to mark up their prices to cover the fees, that's fine- but how can you justify charging $17 for this quality of a sandwich? Extremely disappointed.

Yelp
Looking to get attacked by their employee then please come on in and order up. We used to come here often. It's been a while. My husband and I always get the the green shack special. Tonight I called in our order. Footlong Green Shack Special for hubby, 6inch when in Rome for me and the Nashville with fries for our daughter. We were told order will be ready for pickup 15-20 minutes. We got there in 15 minutes. Figured parking, paying etc will take up the rest of the time. First the parking lot was full of people hanging out around a couple cars, then homeless greeting us asking for money on our way in. We get in. Pay, and gentlemen said it should be another few minutes. About 5-7 minutes after waiting I see the one lady working behind the counter, place a chicken patty in the fryer and I said to my husband and she just now putting our chicken in the fryer referring to my daughters sandwich. The lady must've heard she turned around, flipped the bird, and then continued on to whatever she was doing, which was pretty much nothing and just tweaking out and pacing around wall. The Hispanic gentleman was the only one making sandwiches. People who came after us and placed their order in the shop, got their sandwiches and left while this lady was just tacked out, going in and out from the back, and then trying to make her look self look busy I proceeded to the side counter to see what was going on and I hear her talking to her son and daughter who were standing there asking what dad wanted so she was working on preparing their Family order. At this point we've been in there for 15 minutes waiting. Still only that one Hispanic gentleman making the sandwiches for everybody walking in placing new orders. Mewnwhile the lady was just pacing around trying to make herself look busy and then every so often going and talking to her kids I asked have our sandwiches been made what's the progress on our order? Lady said our sandwiches had been made before we got there and that she's just waiting on the chicken to finish frying. Then she's got to make the fries and assemble the patty in the sandwich. Mind you, my husband is already upset at this point and I start getting upset too. I did not order a soggy sandwich at this rate my sandwich had already been sitting there for about 25 minutes made when it should've been toasted and crispy semi warm. My husband made a comment about the weight her son chimed in defending his mother who is working and I said can we just have our food at this point she had finished everything she wouldn't give us our food and she said don't talk to my son that way, and she held her food away from us. Meanwhile, the sun got into my husband's face our threatening him and I just kept asking the lady for food so we can get out of there and we already paid. We've been waiting and I just get our food she wouldn't give it to me. She just kept yelling at me and then saying that's my child and you don't speak to my child. This way, I told her to not bring her children to work and to , make sure if she does to keep them out of customers way. Across the counter, grab the bag of food that was ours that we paid for that she was holding away from us and then grabbed my husband and proceeded to leave while she ran towards the cashier side and was trying to come at me and come towards me. They had to stop her. She was going to attack me. This is the lady behind the counter, wanting to attack me because I was defending my husband from her son, who got in his face. They just lost two longtime customers. My husband was born and raised in the area and he's been going there for as long as he can remember and introduce me to it, and we've had been regulars there up until recently, and we decided to try it again but never again. Please look at the pictures I provided and regards to my sandwich oily the oil was dripping down my arms and so much mayonnaise. I couldn't taste anything but mayo and oil in my mouth. It was disgusting. I had to throw away my sandwich and my daughter threw away her Nashville chicken sandwich Saying that the flavors were all off my husband did not finish his green shack special for the first time in his life. My sandwich was a bit ily soggy nasty mess, Nashville was gross and thrown out, green shack special was not so special. Super mayo on one half.

Yelp
*This is based on a doordash order only I ordered a plain Jane Turkey sandwich and mafia meatball. The sandwiches here are tasty ! Bread is soft - sandwich is stuffed with meat - plenty of condiments ! Will definitely be trying others and will have to try their desserts as well ! (Side note for the owners : the current doordash system does not allow people to choose their chips and drink when making it a combo. Our doordasher had to call us to ask).
google avatar

Lily A.

Yelp
The hours were not accurate on yelp I got there at 7:30 thinking that it closed at 10 PM, just like it said on Yelp, but they actually told me that they were only serving the cold sandwiches because they close in 30 minutes which I didn't know. Overall sandwich was good but was kind of scared to try it since the other customer complained of finding hair. Also, if you were expecting to come here to try the salads, don't even come because they don't have salads, they said that the salad menu was a year old, but is still on yelp photos? While I was waiting on mine, somebody came in and complained that they found a hair in their food and that they were missing some ingredients that they paid for.
google avatar

Suhvanna R.

Yelp
Very good sandwiches !!!! but if you ask for something specific like no onion they usually don't even pay attention to details or directions so pay attention to that. I do love the food and trying their desserts and shakes or cookies are really good too with your meal. The table seating in the back patio is nice for customers as well. Sometimes ladies can be busy and a bit rude and too busy talking but I guess it's worth it if they are always steady busy pretty clean environment some friendly staff ...
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Just picked up a Italian sandwich. Heavy bread. No meat. Terrible sandwich. And I have been bragging by this place for 30 years. You're off the list.
google avatar

Manuela G.

Yelp
Good pastrami sandwich, I got a cheesecake and a beverage. A lot of my coworkers come here.
google avatar

Kyler R.

Yelp
This place was mmmh different , I'm pro healthy food but no flavor at all?? Now when I see this place, I get scared. I've given it two tries. And honestly, the worst sandwich and worse drink I've ever had from an establishment.

Sheri C.

Yelp
Very good sandwiches, takes along time to make and they are expensive. Located in a not so nice area of SB. Staff are friendly enough.
google avatar

Dale M.

Yelp
Hidden gem in San Bernadino (needs a facelift, but their sandwiches are epic and customer service impeccable). Whether you're passing through or a local, you will be delighted. Ambiance suffers their 1978 establishment, but they're the kind of place that you keep coming to because it works. They'd be a perfect hometown, woman owned business to nominate for a restaurant extreme makeover...in my opinion it would rocket them to a 5 star local diner!!
google avatar

Alicia D.

Yelp
Can not believe this place, the inconsistency of their product makes it difficult to enjoy their sandwiches. It all depends on who makes the sandwiches on what you get. My goodness this last time I ordered 2 sandwiches and both were such bad quality. Monster lobster roll had no lobster but old hard imitation crab meat. The roll was hard like a board , the Cuban was not pressed like a Cuban and there was more pickles than meat. We paid almost 40 dollars it is robbery I tell you. Never ever again will I visit this location. What a shame......
google avatar

Mouse 2.

Yelp
If you want an amazing sandwich this is the place! Try their Italian or my favorite pastrami sandwich. They have an amazing selection of desserts. Definitely a local hot spot!
google avatar

Ava A.

Yelp
Omg a gold mine and so close to home. You may have to wait a bit but it's well worth it! So far the Joker is my go to and the truffle Mac n cheese is to die for
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
I spent close to $200 on 6 sandwiches. When they were delivered, 3 of the sandwiches, were incredibly dry and had very little meat. I definitely expect moped than 2 pickles and one slice of ham on a $19 sandwich. I ordered a large and there was barely enough meat to fill half of the sandwich. I called and was told they would send a credit right away. The credit never came. So I called again and the manager said she would take care of the sandwiches. Two hours passed and still no replacements or credits...so I called her again and was told that the manager went home and that there was nothing they could do. So I wasted a lot of money and was completely ignored. And there is always something that can be done. Especially when I was told the sandwiches would be made correctly. This shows that they do not value their customers. Apparently, it wasn't just the Cuban sandwiches that were lacking meat...it was every sandwich. The meatballs were lacking; each side could've used another meatball. It was more bread than anything. And the Philly has more peppers than meat. The food was incredibly disappointing. And a complete waste of money.

Yelp
Located on Highland Ave. parking to the right. Be mindful, the outside of this place looks so run down and the inside has way too much decor or what they offer in one tiny space all at once is a system overload. They're in dire need of a makeover. However, the sandwiches are A-Mazing!!! Usually this place is crowded, but we arrived between lunch and dinner. We ordered The Joker, the 6 inch, hot pastrami with caramelized onions, mustard, provolone cheese and pickles on wheat bread. My teenage son loved this and devoured within minutes. Then I ordered The Big Dipper, the 6 inch, grilled thinly sliced roast beef with caramelized red onions, provolone cheese, with home made garlic aioli spread on a French roll (but I asked for wheat) with Au Jus on the side. Simply divine! You dip the sandwich in the Au Jus. The only disappointment was the truffle Mac and cheese. For some reason, it didn't taste as wonderfully made as our previous visits. Could it be that there was no truffle oil in it? It tasted more of pepper and cheese. Nevertheless, we were very pleased for the taste and prices of these 6 inch sandwiches for $7.95. Please support your local small businesses.

Yelp
So we just ordered from this place and spent over $150 for our work lunch and out of 12 of us employees 1 person didn't get their sandwich so I called to inform them if they could give us credit because we couldn't go bank today and they pretty much called me a lier and said they packed the sandwich in the bag and nothing they could do about it wow we spend alot of money weekly on lunches and we will not be going back there
google avatar

Yasmine R.

Yelp
We tried 4 different sandwiches, fries, banana pudding and a cookie. This place is so delicious will definitely be stopping here every time I come back to California for a visit. Next on the list to taste would be the monster lobster
google avatar

Vee W.

Yelp
Wasnt too bad! Only thing that was a bummer is if you order DoorDash you cant pick and choose what you want on your sandwich. I got the stack sandwich. Really good and meaty and filling. My coworker wasn't a fan of the mac and cheese all in all. I'd be back for the sandwich!
google avatar

Marcela C.

Yelp
Best sandwiches I've ever had!! I order almost weekly! Order on the app it's easier. All the employees have great customer service

Marta C.

Yelp
Great sandwiches- fair prices and friendly staff!! Bread was very soft not like other places that have French/crunchy style bread.

Top C.

Yelp
Out of nowhere food portions drastically dropped, the love they put into making the meal hasn't been the same in my last couple of visits my sandwiches are dry, pricey, and I had to pay for extra twice just to make a fulfilling sandwich. 25 years ago I stopped going to this shop because of the same reasons then I rediscovered it because customer service is great and the food was great but I'm no longer impressed.
