The food has always been good. Some of the items are unique to taste but it's about preference. The bakery items *chefs kiss*. They have some new girls at the register. Bless her heart, they're nice but one has the attention span of a goldfish when it gets busy. My green smoothie was watery and more orange juice than green items.

The food is high quality from the ingredients, to the preparation, even the presentation. Service is excellent, staff is super kind and help. With a great atmosphere. Great work LCHC Please add the shrimp po’ boy as a regular item🤍

Cashier was rushing me to complete my order. After every item she would tell me my total even though I wasn't done ordering and she would put in my next item in a mood. Food looks bomb though. Lean green is pretty delicious, though for paying $1 more for Large I expect it to be Large... It was a regular size.

I would give it 10 stars if I️ could. Prices are bomb!!! Fresh vegetable dishes and great sandwiches. Juices smoothies and coffees plus a grab and go section and a huge seating area inside and during summer a beautiful outdoor patio. The staff is always great. One of the best lunch spots on the west side!

I went in and explained my allergy. I asked if they had soy or could check. Naomi was immediately offended. She went to the back to check with a manager 3x and told me she was too busy to check. I verified “so you don’t know what’s in your food?” She responded No we don’t and we have other orders we don’t have time to check. She went to get her superior whose attitude matched hers. Her tone demeanor and facial expressions and responses were snappy and sucky. I wouldn’t recommend anyone indulge in food where non of the employees even know what it contains or care to find out. Worst experience ever since my anaphylaxis diagnosis. First and last time here ever

This cafe sucks and anyone that gives it more then 2 stars is lying. They never have any ingredients to make a third of the dishes on the menu. They have a list of 6 smoothies and shakes but can only make 1 of them because of a lack of ingredients. Then the staff looks like they are mad because you asked for something on the menu. It's not like once in awhile this happens it's everyday. Good luck getting a PB+O smoothie the one decent thing on the menu. It's harder to get then a damn MC Rib! How hard is it to have peanut butter and bananas in stock to make this smoothie! Whoever is managing this place needs to be fired!

Obviously haven't been here in a while.....har a business meeting here. Thoroughly impressed that the ambiance is still awesome. The service is still great and the food is still on par with the last time I was here. The jerk chicken wrap I ordered was fresh. Interesting how the chicken was fresh and cool? I don't wanna sound confused but the elements of coolness of the chicken and warmth of the vegetables made it interesting. I expected it in reverse. Nice level of spice as well. I will be back soon

I hate to do this to a place like this, however. It's a nice space. Big and Quiet. Comfortable seating. My tuna wrap was delicious. I ordered a drink for myself and the person I was with, I ordered 2 drinks. The cashier rung it up as the same drink. She never asked questions or clarified (if she didn't understand that's what you do) When my guest brought the drink back and very politely asked that it be remade (because it had caffeine in it and it was supposed to be without caffeine), she actually said "that's what she ordered" and was not apologetic at all and REFUSED to remake it. Someone that worked there that overheard the exchange came and remade the drink (incorrectly still but at least she tried and at least this time it had no caffeine) I have worked in the service industry for over 20 years and this is unacceptable behavior. I don't know if management corrected her but they should have corrected that behavior immediately. I wouldn't want someone with that attitude working my front end. Best of luck to this place but I hope I don't have to go back. I could understand if we were rude and obnoxious about the feedback but remaking a bar drink as a barista is an everyday thing.

The food was good, however, they named this restaurant after a dish. Green tomatoes. It was like going to a restaurant called spaghetti and they served Chinese food. I thought I was going to have Southern Food and found out it was just another Sandwich shop

5 stars just because I loved the coffee they have never tastes the food but will see some other time.

Hidden gem? Food blessed by the divine! Haha had a rotation and was here for a week at the Lawndale Christian Health Center and every day I went to the cafe in the building for lunch and EVERY day the food was so good! Like, it has no business being this good I've eaten my way through the sandwich menu and would order all of them again in a heart beat, you just can't go wrong! And the chicken chili soup of the week? AMAZING, I had to buy several bowls to take home for my roommates to try. This place isn't close to my home but I will make the trip for lunch in the future

I actually spotted the sign for Green Tomato Cafe outside of the window upon completing my workout at Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. And prior to leaving the building itself I spotted it next to the exit and just had to stop in to take a gander at its menu. On top of offering free Wi-Fi, a selection of food and beverages, the cafe is clean and spacious with a number of tables, seats, and a area featuring furniture; giving it that comfortable homely touch for relaxation. Furthermore, along with its spacious dining area, Green Tomato Cafe has a beautiful gated outdoor patio for enjoyment during the warmer season. During my initial visit, I enjoyed relaxing on its couch while eating my meal, which was a Bacon, Lettuce, & Tomato sandwich w/ Hi-C) and reading my book post finishing my workout at Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. Yes! It is definitely the perfect place for meetings, studying or to grab either breakfast or lunch. The menu at Green Tomato Cafe consists of your typical cafe selections followed by breakfast, hot cereals, soups & healthy choices of sandwiches & wraps along with a small selection of smoothies and shakes which coincides perfectly post completion of a workout at Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. As for parking, there is an ample amount suitable for members and guests. The main building, Lawndale Christian Health Center has its own lot, plus if it gets congested because of it being highly used, there is neighborhood and street parking near building site, so no worries. And, if you are one that does not drive, yet familiar with Chicago Transit Authority, the building sits not too far in-between CTA Pulaski & Central Park - Pink Line which makes it an easy commute to-and-from. I asked for the jerk chicken po boy sandwich. They gave me burnt chicken po boy, I normally get the regular one so I guess ima stick with that one.

Outstanding healthy delicious food! Try the soup with a fresh croissant. Or try a salad or their outstanding quesadilla. You can't go wrong with anything here!

There's a very legible sign that says the kitchen closes at 4pm on the menu hovering above the counter, but I came up to the counter at 3:45pm to order and they told me that the kitchen had already closed. I was really disappointed because I had been there for a few hours (ordering snacks every now and then) but waited to order an actual meal because I thought they closed the kitchen at 4pm and it was closer to the time I usually eat dinner. I was planning to stay and work until the entire cafe closed around 5pm. I pointed out the sign and the woman working there didn't have anything to say. She just looked at me dumbfounded, like she had no idea that sign was there. I feel that if they are planning to close the kitchen earlier than is clearly stated, then management should remove the sign or change it.

This cafe is something special.. a beautiful gem in the heart of an area that is up and coming.. an area that has some history, that is good and also bad. This place gives me hope, that with the right mix of beautiful architecture, good food, amazing people that Chicago can be a more wonderful and enjoyable place. Green Tomato Cafe has some amazing prices, great customer service and customers and a good down home feel to people that are from out of town. Lawndale needs more places like this to add some more essential neighborhood structure to the west side of Chicago. Good eats, great treats at Green Tomato Cafe.

One of my favorite places to go on my lunch break! The chicken salad sandwich is to die for

There is literally always an issue here. Either they don't have some advertised on the menu Rude employees Or closing before time or listed time. There is always always and issue at this place

The food is great, and the cafe is spacious and inviting. There's free WiFi AND a section near the front with small tables and toys for kids. If you want fresh, healthy options for breakfast and lunch, this is your place. I got the LV Ensalada 2x in two days because the salad dressing was soooo good. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 starts was because of the coffee - the latte was milk was steamed too much and tasted slightly burnt. The "ok" coffee is not enough to keep me away though! I'll definitely be back.

An absolute great deal. $4-5 salads, $1.50 cup of joe, $5 sandwiches. The garden salad with chicken and basil vinaigrette I had was fresh and tasty. Felt like I was blasting away the cholesterol from my Taco Bell meal earlier that day. Generous portions for the price. Seriously. These same exact dishes could easily cost twice as much. Plus the ambiance is great! Clean, kid friendly, comfortable... Could spend all day here.

This neighborhood isn't typically known for having nice, cozy cafes, but the Green Tomato Cafe definitely serves the community well. I got off at the CTA Central Park Pink line station and was trying to locate where this place was. The surroundings were slightly bare, but not extremely shady during the day. Unfortunately, all the walkways leading toward the cafe weren't shoveled or plowed to a degree that pedestrians could comfortably walk on them. My arduous journey soon ended upon entering to this spacious, well-lit place. I placed my ordered at the counter and was surprised how extensive the menu was. I got a 16 oz. mocha and the chicken po'boy. I liked the atmosphere, but I loved the food more! The sandwich was exquisite. Whoever made this is so talented and deserves a big accolade from this happy customer. The homemade chips were one of the best chips I've ever consumed in my mouth! There's no exaggerating. That's just how delicious they were, without a doubt. The mocha was also spot-on. I know it's quite a travel down to the Lawndale neighborhood, but I will be coming for those chips most definitely. I didn't realize other than utilizing the CTA Central Park Pink line station, the CTA 82 (Kimball/Homan) bus is also accessible from Central Park and Ogden. The CTA 82 bus (northbound) goes through the north part of Little Village--Lawndale--Garfield Park--Humboldt Park--Logan Square--Avondale--Irving Park--Albany Park--North Park and terminates in Lincolnwood, a village that borders the city of Chicago. Thus, if you're one of the CTA bus lovers like myself, it's FYI.

I have been here three times now and each time the food has been delicious, fresh, light and reasonably price. The atmosphere is calm, serene & relaxing. The coffee is delicious , the staff very friendly. I work in the area and I am pleased there are healthy options around. And I am very much an advocate of their cause.

This place is pretty good. It's in the North Lawndale area of Chicago. The food is excellent and fresh. I had a chicken po boy sandwich with grilled chicken. It was good. I came with a group. There are a lot of places to sit, the location is fairly big. There is street parking and a rather large lot to park in. They have a full coffee bar, shakes, and a full healthy menu. This place seems to have a lot of regulars. The prices are reasonable. The ordering system was a little confusing and we didn't get much help from the employees on this one. This is my only issue. Otherwise, not a bad place to grab breakfast or lunch. I will most likely go back again. The coffee was pretty decent and my friends liked their lunches as well. It seems like a neighborhood hangout.

Love love LOVE this place!! Great food, service, and environment! We love coming here. The food is healthy and great portions.

Quick update: new favorites..... order the whole jerk chicken (must order with 24 hour advance notice). That is some tasty (BUT SPICY) chicken! I often order one and then pick it up and bring it home for dinner. My husband LOVES spicy food and really likes this chicken! He often reminds me to get one if I haven't picked one up in a while! I also love the veggie breakfast burrito, which can also be ordered with added chicken (if you want that added protein boost.) I have it both ways and it is delicious and filling! All food is made to order so expect about a 10 minute wait or so. The coffee is really good too. I judge my coffee by whether it tastes good drinking it straight black and they do a very good job brewing the coffee -has a great flavor and is not bitter! You can see I'm a big fan; I've tried a lot of dishes on the menu and I think they do an excellent job offering consistently tasty and inexpensive offerings.

I was a little disappointed with my experience at Green Tomato cafe today. There's a visible sign that says the cafe does not close until 4:30 due to Covid-19. When I arrived at 4pm the cafe was already closed. The only explanation I was given was "sometimes they close early". My issue is that they are already closing earlier due to COVID so how much earlier do they need to close ?

Food is great don't get me wrong but it seems they are always closed 1 hour if not more then the time they are suppose to close. I got here at 3 10 p.m. to find out they closed already. I checked online and it said closes at 4 p.m. Also a lot of foods from the menu are almost never available not sure if it's the lazy staff or cook maybe both. I have ordered in the mornings and afternoons makes no difference.

So welcoming! It's a great place to study or hang out with friends under the sun. I had their $2 16 ounce iced coffee with a splash of caramel (75 cents extra) and it was just what I needed on this summer day.

I deliver packages to the clinic so I stopped in the cafe one day. Btw, the whole building is new with a clinic, gym, and cafe. Great local spot to hang out. The first time I went, I got the minestrone soup with tea. The minestrone is better than most restaurants I've been to. I like that you can pick your tea and add whatever you want at the end counter. Also, had a homemade brownie one time which was delicious. The girls are always friendly. I haven't actually stayed to eat there since I'm on the job, but it looks like a great place to hang out and chill. Very nice ambiance, reasonable prices, clean, and healthy eating options. Overall, I'm glad to see something good in the hood! LOL

I had never had yelp before and really never needed it. But i downloaded this app just so i can leave a review on this cafe. I had 45 min for lunch. When I went in no one was waiting. I walked right up to counter looked at menu for 3 min and then waited for another 4 min while people behind the counter walked past me. And right before the cashier (Rose) took my order the manager stopped her to whisper something flirtatious about the gentleman behind me. She then took my order. A BLT and a bottled water. I then sat down with my number and waited 17 min before i got up and mentioned I was waiting on a BLT. Rose went back and checked and said a few more min. So I asked her if she could make it to go. I then waited another 10 min before i recieved my food.. The food was good and fairly priced but the staff and wait times need work.

I'd never break one of my bones for a sandwich, but Green Tomato Cafe might just be incentive enough for a sprain or something. It's located inside the Lawndale Christian Health Center so if you get some bad news about your blood work at least you can get a tasty lunch, some coffee, and free wifi on your way out. It's cheap, charming, cozy, and clean. Between the fireplace, couches, and dollar fifty drips you'll feel like you're in the comfort of your own home only with way better grub. Most of the menu items are relatively healthy and all for around only 5 bones. Parking is pretty easy and there's tons of seating inside which is pretty much inviting you to go get that weird growth on your back checked out and then eat lunch here afterwards.

I initially didn't have very high expections for this cafe opening up on the first floor of a health center/fitness center, but from the moment I walked in, I was blown away. All the furniture is brand new, and the cafe itself has a very modern feel to it. There are two areas within the cafe - a quiet area with high chairs and seating looking out the window as well as couches and armchairs, meant for those who will be studying and doing work. Next to this is a louder area with the usual tables and chair, meant for those who are chatting and enjoying a good meal. The service was superb - the wait staff were friendly and very attentive. I ordered a BBQ pulled chicken sandwich which came with chips and a black-eye pea salad, and everything was fresh and tasty. The cappuccino was a little sub-par, but I expect them to get better at making espresso drinks with time. Overall a great place to go, whether you're looking for a place to eat with friends or to spend an afternoon working.

Green Tomato, where have you been all my life? LOL I love their salads and smoothies!!! Day 1: I had the Little Village Ensalada with their roasted chicken. It was so big that my husband and I was able to share it. Had the cup of chicken chili verde which was good to me but not to my husband. I also had the lean green smoothie which was good, not too sweet but could've been a little sweeter. Last but not least, the brownie!!!! ;-) oh so delicious!!! Day 2: Hubby went back per request for the same salad, the fruity smoothie (forgot the name), and another brownie today. The salad was missing the tortilla chips so I was kinda bummed out about it. I loved the fruity smoothie and of course the brownie was sooooo good! My hubby surprised me with their chicken po' boy and I must say that it was delicious (even though we shared it, I wanted my own). All in all, I love it and I'm so glad that it's in my own backyard!

Really wanted to love this place but maybe came at the wrong time. Came for lunch on a Tue and tried the chipotle chk sandwich and the chopped chk salad. The sandwich was good but tasted like it sat around for a while. Which may explain why it took so long to get our order. The salad was good but nothing to write home about. The cilantro lime dressing was the most interesting thing about it. The atmosphere did look spacious and cozy and def good for young kids (they have a kids area). Patio seemed nice too but too cold to try. However, the tables where we sat were a bit disheveled and dirty. Overall the service seemed nice but lacking - the service at the register seems a bit overwhelmed and distracted despite the few customers in line. As I mentioned before, the order took around 10 min to come out and the sandwich seemed cold and a bit stale. Would def try again giving the story they tell and support for the community. Just hope they can improve the service.

Came here once and it was super good! I ordered the Tuna melt... But this time around I stopped in for a quick salad to go, got home and it was definitely not worth the $7 something.

Unbelievable. I've been coming here about 4 or 5 yrs. the food is great . Breakfast. Lunch, the bacon cheese grits. Just like mom made back in the day. Stop buy. You will be happy

This cafe is a great spot in North Lawndale. Their smoked chicken quesadillas NEVER disappoint and the smoothies are pretty good too. I'm happy to see a Black-owned place that offers healthy and delicious food in the neighborhood.

First, it's connected to the lawndale Christian fitness center, one of the best gyms I have been to on the west side. Although it is a cafe, it has a pretty large space and is a great place to lounge, study, or even hold a small informal meeting. The food is reasonably priced and taste so good. I recommend anything with jerk chicken, it's just that good.

Great, clean, mellow environment with nice food options. A great way to unwind after work and/or a great work out. The staff is friendly and fast and the food is good. It doesn't weigh you down, so you feel comfortable after a great workout.

This is great place to eat, study or relax. They have a variety of good healthy options and their smoothies (Lean Green specifically) are delicious. I highly recommend this place for a great neighborhood spot that's inexpensive and a comfortable atmosphere. Oh, I fail to mention their chocolate brownies are EVERYTHING

I love this place and what they stand for. I've spent significant time at the Lawndale Christian Health Center this month, and have come to appreciate the neighborhood the way the people involved with LCHC do. They truly care about the neighborhood and the health and fitness needs of the people in Lawndale. The Green Tomato Cafe is affiliated with the health center, and it exists as a place for families in the community to be able to have a nice place to go out to dinner or get a good, nutritious meal. The prices are extremely affordable and the ingredients are fresh. $1.50 for a cup of coffee and just over $2.00 if you want a bottomless cup! The health center also operates a beautiful fitness center in the same building as the GTC which once again serves the needs of the community. Such a great place and I hope it sees much success.

The food is good. very clean and modern space great for meeting or to chill out in peace eat and read a book or emails.

It's a very comfortable and cozy place. Lots of space to lounge and do work. The coffee and the smoothies are great! They have lots of variety of snacks and decent meals. Also is kid friendly.

I luv the ambiance but as for my grilled cheese, it was one I could've made at home. Now I know a grilled cheese is basic but I've had some really good ones. There was no effort into the sandwich but other than that I like the place. I'll come back one more time to try something different.

The Green tomatoe cafe is terrible! The posters who gave a good review work at the health clinic and are trying to boost business. Check it out for yourself. The cafe is almost always empty sometimes even closed due to slow business. Green tomatoe attemps to pass off poorly prepared and very simple meals as healthy alternatives however,what you will really get is overpriced grilled cheese and potato chips of all things like kettle chips and baked chips ( I mean baked LAY'S)in a wicker basket in the front of the store also they have Cheetos! and odd soups that are not very fresh (probably due to lack of business).Some of those meals and chilli's and soups are terrible. And smoothies so simple you can make at home (strawberry &bannana???) Just try it yourself. YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!

This is a great place for a lot of reasons. First of all, its very existence is the result of a Christian health center. The health center needed to provide food for its staff and patients. There was nothing around. Hence, Green Tomato Cafe was born. So kudos to the health center for making a difference in the community not only in providing much-needed health care but also in providing a great little cafe. Secondly, Green Tomato sources its veggies locally. And you can really taste the difference. Thirdly, the restaurant is priced really reasonably for generous portions. Fourth, it's waayyyy clean and hip in there. Lots of light, plenty of seating, some good music and a nice outdoor area. Fifth, the people working there are helpful, friendly and smile a lot. Finally, the food itself is really, really good. I had the smoked chicken salad with fresh greens, blue chess, hard boiled egg, bacon and some other stuff with a homemade cilantro lime dressing that rocked. I was told that the existence of this restaurant had a direct result on a Lou Malnati's restaurant opening down the block. So if you're in the North Lawndale area, stop in to the Green Tomato Cafe. You'll be helping a community and helping yourself to some fine food.

Love it! My husband and I finally tried out green tomato and it is a new favorite! I got the pb + o smoothie and a latte, both were very good. The space is clean, open, trendy, and bright. We will definitely be back!

What an inspiring and incredible place! This little gem has amazing food and and an upscale atmosphere. It's pure quality for the surrounding community. We passed up about 20+ other restaurants during Chicago's restaurant week to come here and we were happy we did so. The chopped chicken salad w/cilantro lime dressing, chicken chili soup, and roastin' turkey sandwich were all fresh quality&delicious! Service was quick, friendly, and the little fireplace in the dining area was quite appreciated on a cold day ~

What's not to love about GTC? Well, for me, it's the distance from my home in Logan Square... but if you live in the southwest side, there's no reason why this place shouldn't be your go-to cafe. First, this place is GREAT for groups. It's huge, yet cozy, with a lounge area, an area with a dozen or so tables of two, and even a long family-style table that would be perfect for study groups. Nice patio outside for sunny days. I like to decor too: clean and breezy, modern, and a bit industrial. I haven't tried the coffee yet, but I was very impressed with my BBQ sandwich. It looked a little different because the sauce is green tomato-based, but it was so, SO good! This place is also Christian-friendly, which means you can do your praisin', prayin', and hallelujah-in' here without (too many) weird looks.

I've been to a lot of Chicago's cafes. First time here and it was delightful! Great food made with fresh produce from the local community garden! Nice place to work, meet, or just eat! Definitely check it out!

While this cafe was originally intended to serve as an alternatitve healthy option in a neighborhood full of fast food restaurants, I would come to the Green Tomato Cafe from my home in Lakeview. The menu isn't huge, but the items on it pack a punch. The BBQ chicken sandwich is delicious--complete with apple slaw! At price of less than $5 for a sandwich and chips, you can't beat this value. There are breakfast options until 11 AM, soups, sandwiches, salads for lunch, a full coffee & espresso bar, and even smoothies and frozen yogurt! The atmosphere is polished and peaceful, but a great space for community. The staff were extremely attentive and helpful. Since the cafe is associated with a health clinic, the staff are trained to give as good of service to the customers as the doctors do to patients. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu!
