Greenbank Guest House & Cottages, Hamilton, Bermuda - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set the scene for us. What makes this hotel stand out? Not far from the City of Hamilton—in fact, located directly across from the capital city on the opposite bank of Hamilton Harbour—is Salt Kettle, a secluded peninsula where, in the 17th century, pirates and privateers brought salt to preserve meat and fish. The charming Greenbank Guest House sits along Salt Kettle’s shoreline, and its old-school vibe and quiet surroundings are what makes this place popular with solace seekers and folks looking for a classic Bermudian stay. What's the story behind the hotel? Greenbank Guest House has been family owned for more than 60 years, so expect personalized service and all the comforts of home. That is, a home that’s more than 200 years old, since parts of this inn were where the overseer of the salt-panning industry once lived. Of course, the entire structure has been significantly remodeled since, but original architectural details, such as exposed cedar beams (once used as ship ballast), are still visible. How are the rooms? Do any of them stand out? There are 11 cozy rooms at this small inn, most of which have kitchenettes and water views. The two units that don’t have in-room cooktops include continental breakfast in the room rate, so if you don’t feel like preparing your own coffee in the morning, rest assured there’s a guest room for you. Rooms vary in size, but most feature island-inspired artwork and simple hardwood furniture. No bells and whistles here, but that’s exactly the point. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Complimentary Wi-Fi is offered throughout the guesthouse. Any dining options on site? Two of the rooms include continental breakfast brought to you on a tray each morning, but otherwise no other food is served. Stock your in-room fridge with goodies from the grocery store or hop on the public ferry to the City of Hamilton, which docks a few steps away from the inn. And the service? This is a family-run establishment through and through, so don’t be surprised if the one of the owners goes the extra mile to make your stay that much better. Who else will we spot lounging around the hotel? There’s an elderly couple here to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, a pair of empty-nesters reading books on Adirondack chairs, and a group of mature friends down from the chilly Northeast to catch some rays on Bermuda’s beaches. How does it fit into the surrounding area? Salt Kettle is well off the grid with little else around, so if you’re searching for seclusion, you’ve found your Shangri-La. Is there anything you'd change? A bar would be nice. What's there that we should be sure to check out? There’s no pool onsite nor is there a beach, but Greenbank Guest House does take full advantage of its gorgeous Hamilton Harbour location. Two of the best ways to enjoy it? Rent a canoe for an inspired paddle to inhabited and uninhabited islets and cays. Or grab a bottle of bubbly from your in-room fridge and pop it open at sunset—the inn’s shoreline is one of the best places to watch the sun dip below the horizon. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? This is a real bang-for-your-buck kind of place, one where you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or location. You’ll be right on the water and close to town, so if you’d like to save a few bucks in pricey Bermuda, you can’t do much better." - David LaHuta

We had a great time at Greenbank. We stayed at the Deluxe One Bedroom Waterview Unit. The location is superb, a 2-min walk to a ferry stop (then only a 5-min ferry ride to Hamilton), and a 15-min walk to a bus stop. It’s a quiet, romantic place with beautiful bay views and sunsets. Buy groceries on the way from the airport (taxis are friendly and open to do so). The kitchenette is fully equipped. Bring your own tea/coffee. There’s fresh coffee in the communal area in the morning. The rooms can be cooler in winter but there’s a heater in the living room area. The staff is friendly and helpful.

What a gem of a spot! We are a family of four traveling with two teenagers for a week, so we were looking for a more affordable place where we could make some of our own meals. Melanie gave us two adjacent rooms, both with kitchenettes. One with a king bed and another with two twins for the boys. Perfect. We used the kitchenettes to make breakfast each day and sandwiches/lunch to take with us on some days. The rooms are basic but clean and functional. What more do you need? The waterfront location with the dock was great. We ended each night with dark n' stormies sitting on the dock, taking a swim with a pool noodle, watching the amazing sunsets, and feeding the fish. The Salt Kettle ferry stop is a 2-minute walk, and you can get to the bus walking (uphill for some, but not bad) 10-15 minutes depending on where you're going. If we'd felt safe doing scooters that would be the best option because the ferry only runs until about 6pm and 1x/hour-ish, so not as convenient as we would have liked. But with two teenagers and left-side driving we opted against that. We ended up cabbing quite a bit. That's my only complaint about Bermuda - the public transportation is a bit oversold since the government dialed back the ferry service in particular and the busses can take far longer to get somewhere than cabbing it. That said, this is a great spot in the middle of the island. If you want to really explore and see Bermuda this is a terrific home base. Melanie is also terrific, as is Reinhard the helper onsite. Our flight was delayed arriving and when I emailed her to say we were still coming, she emailed back with good suggestions about how to manage getting groceries and dinner, both of which we accomplished easily despite being delayed, tired, and a bit frustrated. We would stay here again in a hot second - we don't go back to a lot of places (there are so many places to go!) but we will likely return to Bermuda and to Greenbank. Thanks for a great week!

Simple accommodation with older more traditional rooms. It’s clean and towels are replaced daily. Great ocean side room with views to the west. Ferry stop less than five minutes walk. Quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of a hotel.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of town, this is a lovely little oasis with spectacular views. A quiet and comfy home away from home with the friendliest staff that will go beyond to make sure you have the best stay.

Back from an amazing stay at Greenbank Guest Cottages. We absolutely love it here. After not being able to go for a few years we just came back and booked Greenbank for next September also. You can not find better views right from your cottage. Our cottage -Saltwinds had a kitchen and full bath and a beautiful out door patio. Melanie is wonderful and runs the place. Very helpful with anything you need. We loved sitting out on our patio watching the sun set each evening. It is not a luxury hotel, but a warm and welcoming place with great views and dock to swim off. It’s our home when we are in Bermuda.

We've all seen the great reviews for the Greenback from professional travel sites and independent travelers but with the exception of one review I read prior to our trip in reviews on Tripadvisor, no one is mentioning the obvious mustiness in the rooms. It is clear as soon as you open the door for your stay. We left the windows open during the day and evening to try to help the situation, but it didn't work too well. An air conditioner or dehumidifier would do the trick but after all of these years, it hasn't been purchased yet. I used a blow dryer for 2 hours the night before our departure to dry all of our clothes that we had worn as well as those hanging in the closet. Not a good situation.||Reinhardt is an excellent maintenance/housekeeper/go-to employee on the premises and his kindness and efforts are appreciated. Seems to work 24/7.||The views are just as seen on the ads - waterfront. Pretty nice being that close but not the beautiful blue color.||I sent some questions to Melanie prior to our stay and received incorrect info. I was trying to get accurate info because it was difficult to find through various sources. One question pertained to the bus stop. The bus stop closest to the Cottages is about a 12 minute walk to Middle Rd and is only Bus #8 to Hamilton, not #7 as she thought. ||At this time of writing, the taxi fee from the airport is $37.40 plus tip (if driving on Middle Rd - more if on Harbor Rd). The fee is based on mileage and is government controlled. Not the $50 Melanie said.||The Salt Kettle ferry is a few minutes walk, but has limited hours. The last run from Salt Kettle is 6:25 on weekdays; and 5:05 on weekends. If we wanted to eat dinner in Hamilton, we had to take the bus back to the Cottages.||You are not allowed to bring beach chairs on the buses. Although, Melanie told me you were able to.||Bermuda is an absolutely beautiful island, and we will be back for sure, but we will stay in an alternative lodging due to the terrible mustiness in the cottages.

Spent three nights at Greenbank while on business in Bermuda. Could not have been more pleased. ||This is a comfortable guest house consisting of individual bungalows near the Salt Kettle ferry. It has idyllic views across the bay towards Hamilton and the islands. ||Melanie and her mother could not have been more welcoming hostesses. The bungalow was clean and comfortable with aircon. There was a small kitchenette with a microwave and refrigerator. ||The gardens are beautiful and very well tended. ||This is not the Hamilton Princess, but it doesn’t charge Fairmont prices, either. If you want clean and comfortable, reasonably priced accommodation near the city, this is the place to go.||Recommended.

Greenbank is a fantastic place to stay and offers the best location for access to Hamilton, swim in the incredibly warm water from their floating dock and enjoying the sunsets. The rooms were cozy, clean and comfortable and the kitchenette was the icing on the cake. One of the best attributes of Greenbank is it's 5 minute walk to the ferry. From there, a 10 minute ride takes you to the heart of Hamilton, its shops and restaurants, and from there an easy walk to the bus terminal grants you access to the entire island. The owner at Greenbank is very nice, gave us great advice and recommendations. We will definitely look forward to returning.
