Greenbank Guest House & Cottages, Hamilton, Bermuda - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set the scene for us. What makes this hotel stand out? Not far from the City of Hamilton—in fact, located directly across from the capital city on the opposite bank of Hamilton Harbour—is Salt Kettle, a secluded peninsula where, in the 17th century, pirates and privateers brought salt to preserve meat and fish. The charming Greenbank Guest House sits along Salt Kettle’s shoreline, and its old-school vibe and quiet surroundings are what makes this place popular with solace seekers and folks looking for a classic Bermudian stay. What's the story behind the hotel? Greenbank Guest House has been family owned for more than 60 years, so expect personalized service and all the comforts of home. That is, a home that’s more than 200 years old, since parts of this inn were where the overseer of the salt-panning industry once lived. Of course, the entire structure has been significantly remodeled since, but original architectural details, such as exposed cedar beams (once used as ship ballast), are still visible. How are the rooms? Do any of them stand out? There are 11 cozy rooms at this small inn, most of which have kitchenettes and water views. The two units that don’t have in-room cooktops include continental breakfast in the room rate, so if you don’t feel like preparing your own coffee in the morning, rest assured there’s a guest room for you. Rooms vary in size, but most feature island-inspired artwork and simple hardwood furniture. No bells and whistles here, but that’s exactly the point. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Complimentary Wi-Fi is offered throughout the guesthouse. Any dining options on site? Two of the rooms include continental breakfast brought to you on a tray each morning, but otherwise no other food is served. Stock your in-room fridge with goodies from the grocery store or hop on the public ferry to the City of Hamilton, which docks a few steps away from the inn. And the service? This is a family-run establishment through and through, so don’t be surprised if the one of the owners goes the extra mile to make your stay that much better. Who else will we spot lounging around the hotel? There’s an elderly couple here to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, a pair of empty-nesters reading books on Adirondack chairs, and a group of mature friends down from the chilly Northeast to catch some rays on Bermuda’s beaches. How does it fit into the surrounding area? Salt Kettle is well off the grid with little else around, so if you’re searching for seclusion, you’ve found your Shangri-La. Is there anything you'd change? A bar would be nice. What's there that we should be sure to check out? There’s no pool onsite nor is there a beach, but Greenbank Guest House does take full advantage of its gorgeous Hamilton Harbour location. Two of the best ways to enjoy it? Rent a canoe for an inspired paddle to inhabited and uninhabited islets and cays. Or grab a bottle of bubbly from your in-room fridge and pop it open at sunset—the inn’s shoreline is one of the best places to watch the sun dip below the horizon. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? This is a real bang-for-your-buck kind of place, one where you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or location. You’ll be right on the water and close to town, so if you’d like to save a few bucks in pricey Bermuda, you can’t do much better." - David LaHuta
