"Greenhills Irish Bakery of Dorchester was opened by Dermot Quinn in 1993, and soon became known as Boston’s staple for Irish bakes. After emigrating from Ireland, Quinn founded the bakery to bring a taste of his hometown to Dorchester. Now, 30 years later, he continues to offer Irish breads and treats that his grandmother made back home, like her brown bread. Greenhills churns out four types of soda bread, Irish barmbrak (a slightly sweetened yeasted bread made with raisins that is particularly popular in Ireland around Halloween), and Irish biscuit cake, as well as a variety of sweets, sandwiches, and soups made in-house daily. They also offer Christmas specials during the holiday season, so keep an eye out for their Christmas pudding and Christmas cake." - Katie Draisen

Adorable little shop. They have a box of day old items which is fun. The banana cookies weren’t my fav but the raspberry pastry I got for my friend was, she tells me, delicious. There is a small step to get in, and it is a little crowded, but there’s seating as well if you want to stay, and parking out front on the street.

If you're ever in Dorchester, stop in to this place! I got a tip that the Irish Breakfast roll was good, and it was the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had. No question. I got a tip to get it with butter, ketchup, and brown sauce, and that was the move. It was the best. The meat, bread, all of it. I got the small, and it hit the spot. The cinnamon rolls were excellent, too. I will look for any excuse to come back.

Google
Popped in with family after 29yrs away from Dorchester thinking it’d be a nice place to catch up with lovely Irish cakes. However, I was throughly disgusted with the service & atmosphere to point we left and went elsewhere. My brother queued up to be served but was ignored and when a local came to the counter they were served first. After the way he’d been treated, I knew this wasn’t the place for us. Apparently if they don’t know you or your accent doesn’t sound right, you’re treated differently… to be clear I’m Irish and brought up in Dorchester i just don’t speak with a local accent anymore. Wouldn’t recommend this place as it seems they have all the customers they need or want.

Google
Saturday at 11am this place was packed - but the line went so fast that I wasn't ready to order. Many options of scones, muffins, pastries, sandwiches, and more. I had a delicious (and filling) blueberry scone. I came back later for a roast beef sandwich for lunch. Authentic!

Google
Everything we ordered - a raspberry pastry square and two eclairs - was so delicious and authentic! The tartness of the raspberry square lingers with me, even a few days later... The people working here were prompt and friendly, even during the lunch rush. I will be back the next time I'm in Boston!

Cozy place, with great breakfast sandwiches! Irish breakfast roll is highly recommended!

Google
I have always loved this place. It’s been in Adams village for as long as I can remember and Their desserts are so tasty. This is the perfect place to go for a treat, I love their cakes, cupcakes, cookies, it will 100% satisfy your sweet tooth. For breakfast I would often stop by for buttery toast with jam. I have never had a bad experience here. Definitely recommend this to all!

Google
$9.60 for a large ice coffee and a croissant largely devoid of spinach, feta, and ham. Again, I will not be returning anytime soon.

Yelp
Excellente. Never a disappointment. Love the Irish ambiance. All around, delish!!! Come one, come all

Maureen W.

Yelp
Brown bread just like my mother's!! Just love it! Banana & pumpkin bread also fab! Service fast & friendly. Love it there!

Andrew V.

Yelp
Fabulous authentic brilliant yummy food. The Irish Breakfast Roll was phenomenal Thanks folks

Jenn M.

Yelp
Consistently fresh and delicious. Love being able to call ahead to order because the line is always out the door but it's worth the wait!

Yelp
I just got a current scone there this morning and it had a horrible taste to it, I think the currents were off but it was awful tasting, am sad about that because I have had their soda bread before and it Was great and the sausage rolls were good too I will go back but will avoid that scone

Yelp
Popular spot! Came as a recommendation from our friends who are local to Dorchester - it's clearly well loved. There was a line but it moves quick. They even ran out of items we wanted - so come early if you have favorites :) I got the Lox bagel sandwich - it was delicious. The BEC sandwich was also good - the bagel tasted sweet. Would highly recommend visiting!

Oanh H.

Yelp
This place is always bustling so plan to come early if you're going to order sandwiches. There are tables to sit and enjoy you food. I called to order a birthday cake and the person I spoke to was very patient with explaining cake size and pricing. It's pretty cheap for the cake I ordered. The sponge cake was pretty sweet a little dry but the vanilla frosting made up for it.

Yelp
Every year we make a pilgrimage to Greenhills Irish Bakery, two days before Saint Patrick's Day, to buy many (MANY! Greenhills allows you to place an order prior to Saint Patrick's Day) loaves of Greenhill's Irish Soda Bread. We think Greenhills Irish Bakery's Irish Soda Bread is one of the better alternatives, this side of the Atlantic. Greenhills Irish Soda Bread, in my opinion, pales the Mac Daddy of USA-born Irish Soda Breads, the Irish Soda Bread, once served, daily, at O'Connor's Beef 'n Ale House in Watchung, New Jersey (if you are wondering, I agree, what in the world would anyone in New Jersey know about Irish Soda Bread, BUT, logic will defy you, and O'Connor's Irish Soda Bread was "THE GOODS" of USA-born Irish Soda Breads), however, we send Greenhill Bakery Irish Soda Bread to our Irish friends in America, and they love Greenhills Bakery Irish Soda Bread. Greenhills Irish Bakery offers a few different varieties of Irish Soda Breads, with and without raisins, and with and without Caraway Seeds. They will slice your Irish Soda Bread for you, too, and offer a variety of heating and toasting suggestions. I give Greenhills Irish Bakery, 5 Yelp Stars, with confidence and enthisuasm, based on our high regard for their Irish Soda Bread.

Yelp
First time going to this gem in Dorchester!! It's fantastic!! Bought the half moons, shepherds pie, scones, muffins and danish to sample and loved all of it!!!

Sara P.

Yelp
Delicious options at great prices! The staff was very welcoming and we will definitely come back

John J.

Yelp
Used to come here all the time. Place has gone down hill fast. Only one in line, she decides to walk up and ignore and count her tip jars instead. 3 other people in line behind me now, an obvious new girl comes out from the back to help. Place my simple coffee order after waiting........ takes my money. After a few minutes and conferring with the tip counter, out of coffee. Ask for my money back, then shirt changes me on my refund. That was/is my final straw. Never again.

Robert D.

Yelp
This place is the real deal...I just got some bakery items such as Irish soda bread and some pastries. But the taste is amazing and the prices are great as well.

Taya A.

Yelp
Who else goes anywhere and everywhere that Anthony Bourdain told them to? God I miss that man :( This bakery truly has it all. Their coffee is delicious, as are the pastries. I got a half moon cookie for my boyfriend that was HUGE and the perfect consistency. I also ordered an irish breakfast sandwich on a roll with all the irish meats and fixins. It was not only enormous, but absolutely delicious. I recommend ordering it with fried eggs rather than scrambled! So incredibly good. I'm looking forward to coming back soon!

Yelp
On St. Paddy's Day, everyone in Boston is a wee bit Irish. I frequent Greenhills for familiar tastes from my childhood. There are lots of Irish food imports in the small Caribbean nation where I grew up. There is lots of parking to choose from. However, getting a close spot may be difficult. Expect a line out the back door. This place is frequented by civil servants, construction workers, and the cutest elderly people you'd ever meet. I came this visit for the insides of an Irish breakfast roll (minus the roll) and an Irish cream coffee. I ended up leaving with Trifecta cupcakes as well. As expected, I got my Irish breakfast roll (minus the roll): Irish back bacon, bangers, black and white pudding, two fried eggs, brown sauce, ketchup and Kerrygold butter (I have an unhealthy obsession with this brand of butter). I got an Irish creme coffee which I added some Kerrygold butter to. After I paid for my purchase, I noticed the Trifecta: a Guinness chocolate cupcake with a whiskey chocolate ganache filling and a Bailey's Irish cream frosting and I had to get it because...St. Paddy's Day. The breakfast roll innards were just as expected and a semi-keto dream (except the black and white pudding and the sauces). I know it sounds disgusting adding butter to hot coffee; I dare you try it before you knock it. The biggest and most necessary cheat of the day was the cupcake (which I shared and noted that I need a fast day soon). It was the perfect balance of flavours but the cake itself was a little dry. The frosting was to die for and I wish I could just purchase shots of it. The customer service was friendly as usual but things get a little chaotic during rush hours. My server appeared new and I had to remind him of my coffee (which he was supposed to get after ringing my order in). He apologized and addressed the situation quickly. He appeared a little overwhelmed at the rush as any newbie would be. There are many Irish imports for sale as well: sweets (smarties, catch, Cadbury products, jelly rolls etc) Tayto, Lucozade, jams and jellies, biscuits and, of course , Kerrygold products. All in all, a trip to Greenhills is worth the wait in line.

Yelp
A delightful little Irish bakery with all of the comforts (and more!) of Ireland. They have THE best scones on this side of the pond. And the whoopie pies are to die for. Nice atmosphere, fantastic baked goods, and friendly customer service. This is a family owned bakery and I want to keep them around. Please go visit. :)

Mary R.

Yelp
Love this place. The Irish soda bread is perfection, the scones are delicious and they have a wide variety of flavors and it's the only place I've ever found rhubarb pie that is just pure rhubarb. And it's a great place to grab a sandwich for lunch!

Kervin L.

Yelp
They make the best all natural apple pie! Unsweetened with simple ingredients and a savory crust! This bakery is very busy and they should be the strawberry rhubarb pie is amazing!

Carolyn T.

Yelp
Great little place! Long lines and now I know why! Bakery items are delicious!! Can't wait to go back and try other items!

Pauly V.

Yelp
Friendly place and swift service. We were staying in Dorchester and wanted a traditional irish meal--this place hit the spot. We got 4 huge scones and a large irish breakfast roll (this is a hearty beast!) + tea for about $24, which is a steal cause we had lots of leftovers. We come to Boston a lot, and now this place will surely be on our checklist when we come back!

Megan B.

Yelp
BEST CINNAMON ROLES IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!! The most fabulous place for coffee, sandwiches, and sweet treats. You can order anything from the menu and it would be amazing. Fast service, hardworking staff, and overall a cozy atmosphere.

Annathebride S.

Yelp
Service...turning bad...my friend who frequently goes there said the staff have been rude and not helpful....and the atmosphere has changed for the worse... not friendly as it used to be especially to the regulars....what happened to loyalty, friendliness & kindness??? this makes me sad to hear...the hours changed closes earlier & some of the meals no longer exist....

Phil C.

Yelp
I'm pleasantly surprised with the pies here. I've heard their pies were good but were going to be this good. The gf took a couple with her on the plane ride back for Thanksgiving but was sweet to get me one for the holiday too. The apple pie was large and had an abundance of apples that weren't too sweet or sour. The crust wasn't too thick but held up nicely. The blueberry pie wasn't too gooey yet not runny. It also wasn't too sweet. The mince pie had a good balance of sweet and tart and had all the flavors that encompassed this holiday treat. The Irish breakfast sandwich sounds great in theory but isn't quite as good in practice. Yes, it has the prerequisite meats that you'd see in an Irish breakfast (like black pudding, rashers, bangers, etc.). However, the round sausages are hard to control while eating the sandwich and you don't really get much of a sustained taste of the black and white puddings (sausage slices). It's not bad but I might have to get the large version. Service is pretty good, and the ladies working the counter have that lovely Irish brogue. However, if you have a tough time understanding it, you might have to ask them to repeat things.

James L.

Yelp
A friend who grew up in the area highly suggested the Irish Breakfast Sandwich here and thankfully, this beast of a breakfast did not disappoint. The restaurant has parking on the side and in the back and once inside it's just spacious enough and has all sorts of baked goods, breads, etc. The sandwich was colossal and thoroughly delicious!! Fried egg, proper thick bacon, sausage, cheese and black & white pudding all thrown into a glorious sandwich!! It was basically a full breakfast, put in to a sandwich. I have an enormous appetite and can usually clear what is in front of me but this sandwich got me as I was forced to leave about 20% of it; however, it did not go to waste and my leftovers were just as good a couple of hours later!!

Joe L.

Yelp
The absolute best part of my day is when I get a large caramel nut crunch coffee from the men and women at Greenhills. The service has always been top tier and the coffee is consistent. Walking through the back door to get in line and smelling the fresh food makes me close my eyes and remember throwing the ball around with my father at the park right down the street. The cinnamon scone toasted with butter is the best breakfast desert any man or woman could ask for. If I were going to show someone what Boston is made of, I would show them Greenhills bakery and the wonderful service and food.

Shawn W.

Yelp
GREAT Irish bakery & café, serving everything Irish! Scones in every flavor! Tea served faster than coffee (finally), and stew served in a fresh, homemade bread bowl. Adorable place! You're sure to hear a brogue here. :) Take the red line to Ashmont & switch to an OLD FASHIONED TROLLEY (one stop). About a five minute walk from there. Worth the trip when visiting Boston!!

Bonita Y.

Yelp
Love the bakery! Not very sweet I tried the scone, soda bread and sandwich. I love them all!

Peter S.

Yelp
I'm still appalled by my experience here and it's been 72 hours. Was a longtime customer here but never again, and would encourage everyone to take their business elsewhere. Ordered my meal over the phone and came buy to pick it up 20 minutes later. I pay at the register but was told the meals were not ready yet, so I stand off to the side in their cramped little dining room to wait for my order. I waited an additional 20 minutes after paying (40 minutes total) and watch customers that ordered after me get their meals, some of which were the exact thing I ordered. I get frustrated and make my way to the sandwich counter to try to see what's up with my order while the girls making the sandwiches blatantly ignore me, the 6'8" man standing directly in front of them waiving, but we're somehow able to notice the 5 foot nothing female next to me that could barely see over the counter to answer her question. I grow even more frustrated so I go to the register to ask someone else what is going on with my order where I am ignored further. I finally yell to force the girl behind the sandwich counter to acknowledge me and provide customer service (which is any oxymoron at Greenhills Bakery) where she informs me that she does not have my order, with a heavy dose of attitude to add to the Greenhills charm. I was so disgusted by their horrible customer service I stormed out without my food or a refund, out of fear of what I would have said or done had I stayed. I'm not sure what I'm more disgusted with, Greenhills incompetence or their atrocious attitude and customer service. DON'T GIVE THESE CLOWNS YOUR BUSINESS! PS Gourmet around the corner is an all around better experience than Greenhills.

Lynda T.

Yelp
This place is always packed but the line moves fast. I haven't experienced bad service and the food is generally above average. I can see why it's a popular spot. Pricing is reasonable. I like stopping by for coffee and cake.

Teri A.

Yelp
This is the second year in a row Cindy has helped me bring in their baked goodies into our house. We live in Florida and to watch my boyfriends face light up when we get Greenhills package for Christmas, it's just awesome. The Scones, Whoopie pies and the traditional Irish Christmas cake. It is packaged extremely well and all baked goods came all in tack. The Scones and whoopie pies are so good! We are waiting for Christmas for the cake. Thank you for making our second Christmas together part of our tradition. You bring us joy! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the whole crew at Greenhills

Rocky H.

Yelp
pastries are bomb here. their food could be made better. with more seasoning and cooking the bacon more. I tend to always have to ask them to cook it more. but the employees are always nice and smiling.

ML A.

Yelp
This bakery will not disappoint! They have a large selection of properly baked breads and scones as well as cookies cupcakes and gingerbread cookies (like my granny used to make) and more. Their birthday cakes ( vanilla with vanilla buttercream is my absolute favorite) are so delicious, they are a proper old fashioned cake and frosting, nothing fancy, just how you remember cakes used to be. They are buttery, soft and always so fresh. Excellent breakfast sandwiches- the only place you can get an egg sandwich that isn't dry!! Also they have brown sauce and irish ( and American) sausage and bacon available. Scrummy!! I've had prob half their lunch sandwiches and all are absolutely delicious, I've never left hungry or disappointed. Don't forget a tea, a nice up of Barry's will fortify you for the rest of your day. There is always a group of Irish gentlemen, born in previous generations, sitting around a corner table chatting, a quick listen always puts a smile on my face. If a little table is available have a seat and think about old times maybe. It's a great place for it.

Paula G.

Yelp
Breakfast sausage sandwich egg over easy, sausage, and cheese great. Coffer roll was enormous and tasty. Yet imagined better warm. Good place!!

Patty W.

Yelp
Delicious fresh baked pastries and baked goods. Friendly service and great sandwiches.

Kathy M.

Yelp
Love this place. Traditional Irish food and much more. Great service and awesome food.

Trung B.

Yelp
Christine was extremely helpful and took my orders and smiled each time and to everyone she has serviced. I have not been there for a while, but when I did came back, it was a pleasant treat and I felt welcome and ordered lots of treats and lunch as well. Will be returning for their hearty breakfast tomorrow!

Gabriel N.

Yelp
All I can say is that this place rocks! Definitely try the Irish breakfast sandwich. Back and white sausage and eggs. You can't go wrong.

Kimberly A.

Yelp
Nice little Irish bakery. They serve sandwiches here and have a nice big case filled with all kinds of cookies and pastries. I noticed they even do birthday cakes here. I went in to get a dessert and bought a half moon cookie. It was very fresh tasting and very delicious. I was waited on quickly and they service was great. Would definitely go back the next time I am in the mood for something sweet.

Nick F.

Yelp
Went in for a bacon egg and cheese on white bread. Bread was good but that was it. The bacon was cold the eggs were soggy and the cheese wasn't even melted. Saw the lady who made it just throw the egg and bacon in the microwave. 8 bucks for a microwaved sandwich is crazy, sweet life bakery down in Adams village does a freshly made sandwich for less not this reheated food.

Nicole P.

Yelp
A great neighborhood Irish bakery. It's always jam packed, and you know it's worth the wait. cookies, breads, pastries, it's all delicious. Our family will often stop for some bread to bring to our Irish Nana, and she's always so pleased. I forgot my glasses one day and couldn't read the menu boards - I asked 'can you make a breakfast sandwich with ham cheese and egg' and she was happy to help me fill in the blanks. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood!

Jean C.

Yelp
I went here last Sunday to order two Irish breakfast rolls and they ruined them by putting American cheese on them. I told them to remake them because Irish breakfast rolls don't have American cheese on them and told me that's how they come. Now I've been here many times before and I've never had American cheese on my Irish breakfast rolls that just sounds disgusting so I will not be going back there I will be going next-door where I've never been before but as it turns out their breakfast rolls are a lot better so see you later Green hills. Thanks for Sending me to your competitor they will get all my business from here on in.

Nylton A.

Yelp
This bakery has quality pastries by far the best carrot muffin I've had in Boston. The sandwiches are tasty as well on an Irish roll black put it in the white put in Friday eggs and a choice of cheese. This made me very happy in the morning

Naeemah S.

Yelp
Greenhill has made every birthday for my family a sweet and sucessfull one. The cakes are delicious, well decorated and always on time. Wanted to update my review because the quality of skill and service just keeps getting better

Sharon V.

Yelp
I am pretty sure my Irish card is going to be revoked. This is the first time I have visited this amazing lil Irish bakery! It is so close my house too. Being St. Patty's Day weekend this bakery was packed! A lovely lass helped me with my order! Rows and rows of Irish treats and cupcakes fill the shelves here. They also make a nice iced coffee! It is good to support me people and enjoy some great pastries. There are seats if you shall fancy to have a bite and relax. There is also street parking and a private lot. The blueberry scone was so big! Def give that a try. Eat, drink and be wicked Irish!

Ty S.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. Irish bread is always good to grab Lines are long but move quick

Samantha C.

Yelp
My boyfriend & I live in Dorchester, we come here ALL the time, our parents came to this same place as kids.. we absolutely love everything they have to offer. Unfortunately the last 3 times we've been there which was a combination of week days when we work from home & weekends, the employees have BLATANTLY not listened to us when we order and messed up our order. Two different people but a combination of not putting into the computer right away, making me repeat myself multiple times for the same order and it still not being correct. Makes me uninterested in returning anytime soon.

Sunflower P.

Yelp
I got a croissant sandwiches this morning and it was good . The staff is so nice service . Def , I will be back again and again :)

Joe W.

Yelp
This place is simply outstanding. Small quaint Irish Bakery. Today was the second time we've been here while traveling to Boston and I just can't say enough. You can tell it's a local favorite by the line and the crowd of elderly patrons who hang out having coffee and pleasantly greet you. Great friendly atmosphere. The service is excellent and the food delicious. We had breakfast sandwiches and pastries. Everything was extremely flavorful. We loved the Irish bacon and Irish sausage. Highly recommend!

Vicky H.

Yelp
This place is really nice! I love the food here. Service is always prompt but not always the friendliest but if you need a quick breakfast, this is it. Authentic Irish all over it. There are so many pastries to choose from, so many muffins and so on. They also serve coffee and Irish tea. Their irish breakfast comes several meats. You can have the eggs fried or scrambled. It's scrambled so weird!!! really light and fluffy! it's almost like Chinese egg tards. (or custard like), melts right in your mouth. You can get this in small or large. I've tried it and it was delicious. I've also had their corn muffin -- it's one of the best I've had. Also tried their blueberry scones. So good!! I'd been back several times now and hope to come back soon again!!!

Neal S.

Yelp
Awesome local bakery. Heavenly items all with traditional Irish flare. We get pies and occasionally cakes. Breakfast scones with butter and jam are great. The customers are also interesting and fun.

Monica R.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING!!! And I agree with the reviews below about the blueberry scones. These are the absolute best things I have ever eaten!! My husband prefers the raisin scones (point being - they are all really terrific)!! Also - whiskey cake. MMM! Oh yea... and the half & half (B&W) cookies!
