The 15 Best Sun Valley Restaurants to Try Right Now - Eater

"Named after Sun Valley’s own Gretchen Fraser, the first American to win an Alpine Olympic Gold Medal, this indoor-outdoor, all-day restaurant is adjacent to the Sun Valley Lodge lobby. Executive chef Derek Gallegos makes almost everything in-house, from the English muffins for the eggs Benedict to the house-brined pastrami for the Reubens. Indoor dining is available, as well as outdoor tables and a heated terrace where you’ll often find families regrouping and refueling after long days of skiing." - Scott Wink

Our food tasted great. I ordered the Curry Chicken and Apple Croissant (organic chicken breast, house curry, currants, $20.00) and it was phenomenal. The curry was well seasoned. The croissant was wonderfully buttery. It truly is a delicious recipe! My one complaint is that it’s rather messy. I couldn’t take a bite without half the inner goods spilling out. The coleslaw was mildly sweet and paired well with the croissant. My husband dined in the Rachel (black pepper roasted turkey breast, swiss, coleslaw, thousand island, sourdough, $21.00) and thought the bread was a little too greasy for his liking. He also found the sandwich difficult to eat without it falling apart. Nonetheless, it’s a great sandwich with plenty of fresh ingredients and yummy tastes. The side of chips he chose were addicting! Our bartender and waiter were super friendly, patient and informative. The drinks came out fast and full every time. We visited around 2:00-3:30 so the restaurant wasn’t very crowded. The seats at the tables were very comfortable.

Cute place, I was excited to try the wagyu ribeye steak. I was surprised when it arrived maybe 3/8” thick smothered in a dark brown gravy. Very tough and grisly, I would not recommend it. My wife had a sea bass special which she enjoyed.

Google
Mara from Croatia was a spectacular server here. Very repondant to refills and checking the quality of out experience. Justin delivered our delicious chili & Salad meals promptly and steaming hot. Thank you for the excellent lunch in the snow covered village. Plus the lavender gin drop was on point and perfect cocktail to warm me up!

Google
Very disappointing. This restaurant was empty on an NFL playoff weekend when the hotel bar and Ram restaurant were 100% full, now we know why. below average food and service, but at a high price point. The manager spoke at length to the only other customer (a regular) in the restaurant seated next to us, but never checked on us once or asked us how our meal was (it was disappointing) . Not ever going back.

We have been in Ketchum for about 2 weeks and decided to dine at Gretchen’s in Sun Valley for the 3rd time last week ( the last time I was here was in July 2023) the food and service were amazing kudos the Manager Steve, the Front House Staff and the Culinary Team 😎😎😎😎

Google
Delicious dinner and good service. For drinks I ordered their version of an old fashioned which was quite good, my wife had their Lavender Mocktail with Grey Goose vodka added. For dinner we had their chicken curry and baked cod.

Google
Fine dining done right. Delicious truffle fries! The chef's cut of the day was done to perfection and the service was 5 star. I had been traveling hard all day and Gretchen's was just the place I needed to relax with a drink and scrumptious meal.

Excellent food! Rachel was amazing and the best chips I’ve had!

Yelp
We hit up Gretchen's for breakfast on our family vacation at the sun valley lodge. Super convenient if staying at the lodge as it's right off the lobby. It is a very nice place so our kids were probably borderline as they can be a bit rowdy but another family came in with kids and I feel it's very suitable for family's. The food is very good. The quality is high as is the service. All our dishes were amazing. Everything was obviously made in house from the pancakes to the biscuits. The biscuits were very good, buttery and delicious. I got a side of gravy since you have the choice of toast or biscuit and it was a wise choice. The kids menu items were very sizable. Portions were good all the way around. I highly recommend their local specialty juices. The immunity was great and came with an overflow refill in a jar left at the table. Very good food, fancier setting but still family friendly. Highly recommended for those staying at the lodge. They seem to share many menu items with the dutchin lounge and pool side cafe as well for lunch. Come get it and eat up Boise.

Yelp
We loved this brunch stop. We were able to make reservations online but did have to put a card down and commit to $25/head if someone no showed within 24 hours. They weren't seating indoors but the outdoors was well covered with a view of the ice skating rink that was fun to observe. Like service everywhere in Sun Valley, things ran sloooow. I think the quaint ski town is really feeling the effects of the covid employee shortage so just plan some additional time for your meal. The cocktails here were superb and the food equally as yummy. Our group got a variety of Rachel's, quesadillas, the soup of the day and the fish and chips. Everything was delicious and the french fries were so good. Highly recommend this stop!

Yelp
Not exactly sure what Gretchen's only has 3 1/2 stars on Yelp. So I'm here doing my part to boost this place to at least 4-stars on Yelp. We had a great night at Gretchen's. Service was top notch, as my water cup never dipped below half full. The food was bomb. Got the tempura green beans were delicious. Baked Brie was also yummy. Got the curry with chicken for my main course. Was happy with every single thing our table ordered. Great vibe in the sun valley lodge. Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Located inside the Sun Valley main lodge is an absolute treat to experience. First Sun Valley does Covid protocols quite well. The tables are spaced out well. The staff are wearing masks and gloves, you feel comfortable dinning in. You also have the option to eat around the lobby area. We got great coffee. Tasty mimosas. Beignets were served complimentary, quite tasty. The brunch options are wonderful. The food is delicious and tasty. Go and enjoy!

Yelp
I would recommend this place for convenience, professionalism & good portions. Whether staying at Sun Valley Lodge or not... come here for the lovely ambiance, the gracious staff, & the quality food. I was particularly impressed that they served us right before closing... as we'd just driven a full day to arrive just in time... kudos to all!

Yelp
So-so food and service. The price of the menu was among the highest in Sun Valley. Given the price of the menu and forgettable meal, I don't recommend.
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
Over priced with breakfast ambiance. Decor was so plain and bright inside. I felt like I was walking into an office meeting. Service was good, but food was not super for price what we paid! I highly recommend to visit the hotel, but eat somewhere else!
google avatar

Yelp
The waitress claimed the halibut fish n chips were exceptional and she was right!! Perfect crust which means crisp and enough batter to hold together the meaty halibut pieces but not greasy. Wow. Might be the best halibut fish n chips of all time. The Apple/cabbage Cole slaw was also quite good. Great dining experience outside while watching the ice skaters. Nice location.

Josefina H.

Yelp
Food and ambiance is good but service is too slow. And suddenly the waitresses disappear and there is no way to order more or pay.... Very disappointing

G G.

Yelp
Ambiance 100! Such an amazing patio among the gardens. The food is delicious too, the shareables are so good. They have a frozen cocktail of the day too which is fun. Then after you can wander around the gardens!
google avatar

Yelp
Great vibe and ambiance here. We took a short walk from our Wildflower condo here after making the drive up. I like the outside dining option and the fact that we were sitting right next to the flowers bed. They have live piano music for a little tonight. Food and drinks were good but nothing too special--we might've liked the ambiance more than the food.

Yelp
Had breakfast here several times during my stay at the lodge. Had good service every time. The San Francisco special was good and rich with Parmesan cheese. The toast is big and buttered. They keep the coffee coming I also had the biscuits and sausage gravy. So good. Came with two eggs cooked your style.
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
Avocado toast, done in a very special way, wife's favorite. Service is excellent, rest of the breakfasts are okay.

Yelp
Looking for a solid meal every time, stop on by here. We have been coming here for at least 8 years now and have never really been disappointed. We started with the nachos. I will say these did not work at all. They used flour tortillas instead of corn. When the nachos arrived, the chips were all soggy from the salsa. Not a good combo. Do not recommend. I ordered the flat iron steak and the wife ordered Thai curry scallops. The steak with vegetables were very good. The steak was cooked to my order and the vegetables had tons of roasted flavor. The scallops had a very strong coconut milk flavor. The scallops were a bit small but tasty. I would highly recommend this spot even though this one meal was not the norm that we have experienced. Cheers Always!

Yelp
Ate in the lobby of SV Lodge. Ambiance is a 10/10. Piano player is 10/10. Waitstaff- 12/10. (Drinks from Duchin are INCREDIBLE!) Gretchen's food itself: 2/10. Very subpar. Just don't order the charcuterie board. First thing listed on the description is "meats." It comes with 6 THIN slices of greasy pepperoni, because it's been sitting prepared in the fridge all day and the olive juice ran all over the plate. The cheese and jams are alright. White cheddar & Brie, very basic. Then it says "pickled vegetableS" but the only veggie on the plate is mini pickles... The chefs need to do a better job or be replaced/trained. $22 for this is unacceptable. Blue crab wontons were subpar. Tasted kinda burnt, but the orange sauce was overpowering enough to blur out the burntness. Bad review due to the food itself, everything else was great. Expected more from a nice place!

Patio D.

Yelp
Very good Huevros. Awful service. No/absent hostess. Takes too long for searing. Asked three times for a drink. "How is it" 2 seconds after plated. Then ghosted. Only a few tables occupied. Not a case of employee shortage. There were more employees than tables. Just not well trained. Person next over asked several times for a toast. It was just bad. Pleasant employees Im sure- just nor trained. Typical management problem. In town Ketchum offers much better experience.

Yelp
This is the more elegant restaurant in the Sun Valley Resort for the more established, regular clientele. The service reflects that, meaning that it's slow and you won't get much attention fi you don't fit the above description. The food is good though, we got the Crispy Won-tons and the Tempura green beans, both were delicious. Good drinks also, but not much fun here, it's a quiet, sleepy place, if that's what you're looking for.
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
I'm conflicted about this place because it's in such a pretty area and I always think it will be better the next time around . Sadly it's not . It's never really consistent and In reality- this place Ain't shit . Mediocre as hell and Why so over priced ? It's not worth it . It sounds like it would be so good and The gazpacho soup was , but the blue crab wontons were burnt and The vodka peach drinks are weak and sugary. The atmosphere is the worst too . They sat us next to a group of old swingers who were talking about their dumb Rolex watches and what Swiss bank accounts to use to move money around and how we need to build a wall before it's too late . I couldn't help but look over and see how rude they were to the poor server as well . The place gives me ugly rich Republican vibes so it's a hard no from me .

Yelp
Had lunch here today after we were too lazy to go back into town and we all loved our food. Shared the Asian salad with seared tuna and they split it for us and the portion size was good and the salad dressing was tangy and good. We all shared the Rachel sandwich, which was a turkey on a grilled bread and served with coleslaw. Very tasty sandwich. Was fun to watch the ice skating and service was outstanding! Will come back.
google avatar

Rod B.

Yelp
Had the burger and it was very good! Will be coming back to try more of the menu. Sat outside and had a great view. Wasn't too cold but we are here in September. Love the vibe and the grounds are well maintained as part of the lodge. Will have to see what it like at Christmas!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with amazing food and cocktails. Our service was great and I would definitely eat here again in the future!

Debra H.

Yelp
The service was adequate, not horrible, not great. The food was sub-par. I ordered the Chef's Special Vegetarian. It was sold as wild rice risotto with corn, and roasted vegetables. It was yesterday's leftover wild rice with corn mixed in, and topped with VERY roasted vegetables that were cooked in oil, possibly butter. The only thing fresh were a few pieces of sugar peas in the pod. The meal tasted ok, but was very oily, and lacking anything fresh. The dish looked dark; dark rice, dark roasted vegetables. There was no creaminess to the rice, thus it was not a risotto. My husband had the Yellow Curry Vegetable and Rice dish. It was bland, beside the curry there were no other flavors, making it bland. The ambiance was that of a hotel coffee shop, not an upscale restaurant. I was hoping for something better.

Yelp
Amazing salads. My favorite was Asian sesame salad with seared tuna. My boyfriend orders multicolor leave salad with grilled chicken. It was heavenly delicious!!!! Fresh, crispy, they didn't go heavy on the dressing, it was just enough to change the flavor of salad The dishes were big enough that you didn't need to order a main course. But we still did...lol, how can you refuse from crab cake, especially that potion is big enough and we could share for both of us. Then dessert and cappuccino arrived....OMG!!! Cream Brulé was dissolving on the spoon before reaching my mouth. It was so fluffy, not heavy at all and you can feel it was made with love and passion and s-u-p-e-r slow. They cool it down in refrigerator just enough so it didn't became to soggy on the bottom from staying too long. Most of the places trying to make it fast and all you can taste is burned half and half and sugar...lol because it's made too fast sometimes you can even taste egg yolks! Layer of hard caramel was covering the dish and they even managed to design it. It's was so amazing, I totally forgot to share it.... oops!

Yelp
Lovely lunch. The gnocchi was one of the better ones I have ever had. Wholesome too with hierloom carrots and other veggies. Excellent service. We got great tips on what to do in the area as well. Will definitely return when in the region again.

Meghan B.

Yelp
Honestly, the worst service I have ever had in any restaurant. I never leave reviews (especially bad ones) but I feel like I need to warn people not to spend their money here. We came with a party of three adults, two infants under age one, and a well behaved five year old. We were the only group seated directly in the sun even though there were other tables that could accommodate us. We felt like they sat us there on purpose so we would be there long. Our babies were wonderful despite being hot and not ever getting the high chairs we asked for TWICE, and the five year old was perfectly behaved even though the sun was in his eyes and you could SEE him sweating. We were ignored by the servers at every point of our meal. Our group was polite and still tipped on our overpriced checks despite having had such outrageously poor service. I don't know if we looked "poorer" than the demographic that usually eats there, but we left feeling really let down.
google avatar

April C.

Yelp
Whether you're staying at the Sun Valley lodge or not, you should come to Gretchen's for breakfast! Great for 2 people or large families, they will accommodate! Try the egg white frittata and a mimosa to start your morning off right. Delicious coffee and friendly service. Plus you can sit inside or outside and the view is breathtaking!
google avatar

Dani L.

Yelp
Awesome breakfast! Huevos rancheros were probably the best ones I've had. Super friendly service, and good strong coffee! My friend had an Omelette, and the eggs were SO good and buttery! Yum! I'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
I understand that the have just re-opened last week so this review is based only on food. The staff was very kind but also stressed. I ordered macaroni and cheese and my grandma ordered a burger. Let's start with the burger. Although the meat was cooked perfect it came out cold missing tomatoes and cheese. The chips were hard as a rock and you could just tell the food wasn't fresh. All in all she said if we ever went back she would try it again since the meat was very good and cooked exactly how she asked. My macaroni and cheese came out cold. Not even Luke warm, cold. My server was very nice and immediately took it back to get me hot macaroni. When it returned it was indeed warm but completely lacking flavor. I would not order the macaroni again.
google avatar

Haroun K.

Yelp
My travel guide liked eating here, so I'll give it the 4th star. She enjoyed the burger and breakfast offerings. I'll say that service was just the best. Everyone was so accommodating and friendly. And it is spacious and comfy. But I wasn't overly thrilled with the food. The kale wrap was ok-ok. But the spinach-artichoke cannelloni on the dinner menu is one of the most perplexing items I've ever ordered at a restaurant. It seems to be the spinach artichoke dip stuffed into pasta, and arrived eerily crispy. No thank you. Also, I'd avoid wine by the glass. But the service is just great. Prices were quite high, but on par for resort dining.
google avatar

Suzan F.

Yelp
We came by to sit and have a snack and drinks to watch our daughter skate. However we we asked to sit in one of four spots where you couldn't see the ice very well despite being fully set tables everywhere closer. The staff was rude and off putting not to let us sit just 20 feet closer. How hard is it to open up a few more tables? Don't bother going. There are so many other good places to eat here. I wish I could give no stars.
google avatar

Marta K.

Yelp
Delicious food, it's ready hard to choose good prices. Employees are smiling and friendly:) lovely atmosphere!) love this place! always coming here)
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
Friends of the bride hosted a luncheon at Gretchen's at the Sun Valley Lodge; it was bad timing that this outdoor luncheon on the terrace coincided with one of the hottest days of the week (104 degrees). We were shaded, but we - along with the butter on the tables - were melting. It's a beautiful setting with nicely set tables overlooking the year-round ice skating rink. Gretchen's roped off an area for our lunch which was nice to have a few tables close together so we could chat and mingle. The lunch was a buffet, and the buffet items were all so tempting. I'm sure my parents would be ashamed, but I didn't even make it to the carving station. There were hot food items from roasted chicken to salmon to red meat on the carving station to roasted potatoes and wild rice, and there were also lots of other great cold items like fresh fruit and grilled vegetables. The waitress asked us if we wanted glasses of champagne which we all ordered, but they never arrived. Boo.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised. I usually would avoid resort/hotel restaurants, but the service and food were excellent. During summer, the terrace is an amazing place for a cocktail and a bite to eat. Valet is free and I recommend you show up a few minutes early to walk around the grounds!

B M.

Yelp
Surprisingly good, excellent service, moderate price and tasty flavors. Usually we avoid hotel restaurants but late evening and tiredness had us choosing this open space eatery. Fresh flavors, friendly, quick service - we had appetizers, salads and desserts - creme brûlée was great with fresh fruit to top it off.
google avatar

Aaron J.

Yelp
Wonderful remake of this restaurant. Terrific French 75 cocktail - best I've had anywhere. Tuna appetizer was delicious. Crab pasta main course was quite good. Service was enthusiastic (new servers for the winter season). Service is at the pace you expect from a white table cloth formal restaurant.

Patrick A.

Yelp
If you don't want a wait and just want some good food then Gretchen's is great. It's food is par. Pricing is fine. Bonus that it's in the Lodge Hotel and you can walk around afterwards If you want the best breakfast/brunch in sun valley your better off at Kneadery
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
This was so good! The Sandwich with the dip was amazing! I also love the desert! I strongly recommend this place! Th wait was a little long but totally worth it! The temperature was perfect! I strongly recommend it!
google avatar

Bryan H.

Yelp
A local favourite for upscale fine dinning. Food is good and service is good (depending on how busy). Great wine and drink list.
google avatar

Philip G.

Yelp
My companions were hard-to-please vegetarians but they loved this place. Service is weak considering the price. Friendly folks but they don't seem like career hospitality types. Not cheap but fairly priced. Markup on wine is reasonable. The fried green beans were awesome!

Mary A.

Yelp
Gretchens has gotten a facelift and update since we were here a year ago and the reactions are all over the place. Some people who have been coming to Sun Valley for years don't like it and want to remember it the way it was. Not me! I'm definitely a fan of the changes that have taken place here! The restaurant is brighter, more open, and has a fresh look. The food was excellent! My husband had sausage which is made on the premises. I tasted it and it was delicious. I opted for a chicken entrée and that was cooked very well. The food and beverage manager checked on us and asked for feedback. So there is definitely good managerial oversight here. We were impressed with the new look at Gretchens and at the Lodge in general.
google avatar

En C.

Yelp
Had a quiet lunch here midweek and were very pleased with the great lunch deal: glass of house wine and an entree for $20. We shared the beef dip and the strawberry salad + chicken. The food was delicious and fresh. This may be a small detail, but the hot rolls they brought out pre meal were superb! The house wine was nothing special but they had a good selection of other wines. Service was excellent too. It was a quiet afternoon but we enjoyed the peaceful, more exclusive feel of the lodge ambiance.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
This place is great. I loved breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Breakfast Quiche, granola parfait and pancakes were fabulous.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Stunning setting, food was pretty good, service was below par, but I think we were just unlucky. Don't bother with the coffee, it's terrible.

Evan M.

Yelp
The food was decent, and the outdoor patio was great, but the service was terrible. The waiters and waitresses were not bad, but the management is what led to the poor service. With a mostly empty restaurant, the majorly understaffed restaurant had it's poor servers physically running back and forth from the kitchen, just to keep up. Not kidding, the lady from behind the front desk of the hotel was coming around refilling water at one point because they were so short on staff. When we ordered drinks, the waiter had to come and apologize to us for the drinks taking so long to arrive, as it was due to the bartender being "MIA". I had never seen anything like it before. The worst part was the older gentlemen who was the host. Not only did he do nothing to help the overworked staff, but it actually seemed like he was making more stress for them. On several occasions we heard him yell at the wait staff for doing something wrong, across the entire restaurant. It was very unprofessional, and only made things worse. We will not be coming back, or recommending it to others.

Gloria K.

Yelp
Awesome spot for breakfast! I had the egg white, kale something and loved it! Service was friendly and continued at a nice and I un-rushed pace.
google avatar

K. S.

Yelp
Terrible service and mistakes were made with our orders repeatedly. Food was worse than mediocre. We won't go again and we are staying in the Lodge! The walk into Ketchum is the only way to go for food.

Chris N.

Yelp
We were in town for a conference and had "3 out of 4 day" ski tickets. One of the days was too crappy to ski, but we discovered that we could trade in one of the days for a variety of things, including lunch at Gretchen's and ice skating. Totally worth it, because the food here is great! I got the Medetarian sandwich for lunch, and it was solid. Big, gooey with cheese and it included a side of sweet potato fries (they were solid as well). Others around the table raved about the French onion soup, and I got my hands on a few onion rings... excellent. Prices were reasonable (especially since our lunch was free), but the coupon didn't include booze, and their house wine (supposed to be the cheap one, right?) was $11 for a glass. Coulda ordered 2 1/2 beers for that, but not a huge deal. Overall, this was a great place to grab lunch. Classy, cozy and great food!

Leilani F.

Yelp
I am with a ski group and we've eaten 4 breakfast's and have never been disappointed. Our waiter "T" is first class and has the best people skills I've ever encountered. there are 5 of us and all our meals have been prepared how we like them and have been delivered in a very timely manner. Coffee cups kept full. They have preserves that come with the toast that is delicious. It's the service that takes this review to a BIG FIVE for us.

Yelp
Great place , friendly and knowledgable wait staff , our waiters name Joseph a great dinning e experience ! !
