5 stars doesn't begin to rate anything here! My husband took me here for 4 nights for my birthday and we didn't want to leave! The staff are the sweetest. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcome. The food is absolutely incredible! We have been inspired to eat better. I cannot say enough good about this amazing place!

I had a dream weekend at Greyfield Inn, a trip I had wanted to take for a long time. My husband and I stayed in the Library room and it was exactly what I had hoped for. The staff was very nice, the home was picturesque, the food was very good. Zero complaints about the Inn or our stay. Well worth it. There's really only two ways to spend the night on Cumberland Island, booking at Greyfield or camping, and I'm not a camping person. I knew going in that Greyfield Inn wasn't going to be like a normal hotel, it's on a remote island where everything has to be brought in by boat. Just keep that in mind when considering booking. I thought the bed and bedding was very comfortable. The room was spacious. Reading on the porch was lovely. The bikes made getting around easy. Having the option to sign up for naturalist tours meant if you didn't feel like biking to see the sites you could take a nice, guided tour by truck. When you think about all that must go into running the Inn, that meals are included, I think it's a very good value.

Overall trip was a disappointment. Upon arrival our staffer was friendly and the history was interesting but a welcome packet with an island map, daily activity flyer and overall information about rooms, food service, etc. would have been helpful - especially since we could not check in to our room until later in the day. The general condition of the Inn and Cottages was worn and tired looking - peeling paint, uncomfortable DR chairs, inoperable fountain in front, and lack of good a/c was not up to standard considering the room rate. Food was particularly disappointing - poorly cooked and unimaginative dinners, and the evening cocktail hour had food that was cheap and unappetizing. There was no seafood at any meal for our entire stay - surprising for a seaside resort - and again disappointing. Lunch and breakfast were more acceptable but not 5 star. Also, the level of staffing was not enough to provide for 5 star service - there was an incoming wedding and it seemed that regular guests were taking a back seat in service and food quality as the entire staff prepared for it. The activities were not planned well enough in advance for an adequate sampling during a 2 day stay and focused more on history and not enough on nature and the natural beauty of the island. The tour truck rides were uncomfortable and could case motion sickness - which should be forewarned. The kayak launching area was dangerous and basically unusable, and there was no help or direction from staff. The high room rate cost comes with a high level of expectation - with attention to detail and quality of services that were lacking. All these issues made our stay disappointing and should be addressed to ensure that future stays meet a 5 star expectation.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this tranquil, unspoiled island. The huge oaks with moss and saw palmetto are everywhere and make for a very romantic setting. The inn itself is beautiful with a large porch complete with daybeds and rocking chairs looking out over the moss draped yard with grazing wild horses. In fact, you see wild horses (and foals in our case) everywhere on the island. Get a bike from the inn and ride to the wide beach with huge dunes seeing deer, armadillos and turkeys along the way. The naturalist, Christina, is excellent, very informative and friendly. We took a 4-5 hour tour of the north end (see church where JFK jr wed and old Gullah settlement) with 6 people on the back of the inn’s truck which proved to be quite an adventure. The other guests were friendly and interesting and some were people I’d like to stay in touch with. We had dinner each night with a group and I would rate the food as very good and the company of other guests great. All in all the most magical few days I’ve had in a long time!!

We stayed for 3 nights and have already chosen our room for next year! This place is unbelievably special. If you love history, historic homes, nature, delicious farm to table food, and a feeling of stepping back into a quieter time- this is for you. We enjoyed biking, touring old historic ruins, reading on the veranda bed swing, watching the wild horses graze in the front lawn amongst centuries old trees with spanish moss swaying in the breeze, butterflies, honey bees etc... The beach was pristine and we felt like we stepped back in time the entire trip. An adorable picnic basket is packed for you daily to enjoy wherever and it was a delight to see what the menu was for each day. If you enjoy parties, your phone, and TV- this may not be the place for you. For those that said the Inn was old and tired were too set in their ways and must have missed what the Inn is entirely about. The Carnegie's built the homes on the island in the early 1900's; it is old and tired and that is even more charming. There are books in the library from 1895 and earlier, Tiffany lamps, and Carnegie portraits and furnishings throughout- like getting to live in a museum. For nature lovers and history buffs- you can't beat it. For party goers and spa lovers; stay away. More for us!

Dear Mrs. Ricketson, Thank you so very much for allowing my wife and I to be guests in your exquisite home, Greyfield. It was the respite we both desperately needed. We are sorry you weren’t able to be present, but rest assured, your staff did an impeccable job caring for us in every way. The room we were in was beautiful, cool and comfortable, with a wonderful view of the front lawn, the dignfied oaks, and occasional wild horses that wandered in to graze. It was so nice to meet your family. We were not treated as guests at an inn, but as dear friends welcomed with open arms and encouraged to make Greyfield OUR home for the five days we were there. Your chef Luke made the most exquisite and delicious meals from the garden and local sources, and we appreciated being able to wander into the kitchen at any time for snacks and drinks. We haven't eaten healthier or better in quite a while. We certainly did not go hungry! I have to mention how delightful Patrick, Chris, Hannah, Marley, Christina, Cici, Zachary, and all the others of your staff were. They made us and everyone feel so special. Any questions we had, they would, without fail, stop what they were doing to help us. They are the ones made our visit the most wonderful vacation we've ever had. We had luxurious, unhurried dinners and conversations with a sweet family from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a delightful couple from Fairhope, Alabama, a very interesting and kind couple from Southern Pines, North Carolina, and a sweet and hilarious couple from Alma, Georgia. Having extended conversations with other guests each day was certainly one of the best part of our visit. We greatly enjoyed touring the island. It was quite a sight to see your father and mother's former home, Dungeness, and get a glimpse of what it, and life, was like before the most unfortunate fire. I think of them often. Plum Orchard was an opulent wonder, and we were fascinated touring it and seeing how life was like 100 years ago on the island. "Island life" on Cumberland is unequalled. Perhaps some may find the lack of bustle and noise unpleasant, as one who is allergic to quiet and their own thoughts. I pity them. The natural, unspoiled beauty that surrounded us reminded us that we, indeed, are a part of the Lord’s majestic creation, one that man cannot come close to imitating. Seeing the sunrises over an empty beach with no grand hotels or resorts behind us felt like the Almighty made this day just for us. During our time there we were amidst wild horses, manatees, dolphins, wild turkey, a wild boar, many deer, a cute little possum, an aligator, crabs, terns, pelicans, seagulls, and more. Such a menagerie! The flora was varied and stunning. We were truly blessed. I could go on and on, the bike rides under the canopy of oaks, the history the island and its inhabitants, and being able to sit in tiny African Baptist Church at the north of the Island and thank the Lord for His and your generosity, all unforgettable. We will certainly be back, if you would have us! Your friends, Tom and Susan Holly Hill, South Carolina PS Please give Apple kitty some some pets for us when you can. She is the queen of the castle after all!

Greyfield is a beautiful, rustic inn on Cumberland Island. Our suite was quite enjoyable especially the large claw foot tub! The furnishings in our suite were historic but worn. The beaches were impressive in their width and solitude. The staff were warm and welcoming. |HOWEVER the food was a big disappointment for me and will have a bearing on if I ever go back. My meals were extremely high in sugar and carbs. I told the staff that I was a diabetic and was needed low sugar & carbs for my meals. I also asked for ice tea with no sugar but was provided with sweetened tea instead! My food was a HUGE disappointment.
