Good Golf Is An Adventure Sport

Greywalls Hotel & Chez Roux (Gullane, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In the East Lothian town of Gullane, a mere 20 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh, is Greywalls, a stunning Arts and Crafts–style house built in 1901 by the architect Edwin Lutyens. Fine enough for country-house aficionados, but many guests are here for an even more famous neighbor: the legendary Muirfield golf links, home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the world’s oldest club. The hotel’s rooms are modern in function but classic in their aesthetic; this is no resort, but a proper country house hotel. Chez Roux, the restaurant, is one of several upscale French restaurants across Scotland established by chef Albert Roux." - Tablet Hotels

What a delightful evening. We were staying nearby at Archerfield but had heard about the restaurant at Greywalls and managed to book a table. Originally owned by the Horlick family, the house is a delight, full of interesting rooms which are traditional but cosy and welcoming. One hallway had a display of photographs and press cuttings of famous golfers and celebrities who had stayed there, and played on the championship course. Our table had views of Muirfield, looking immaculate in the evening sunshine, and from our arrival onwards we were made to feel at home by the manager Ian, and the two delightful hostesses. The food was five star, as you'd expect from a Chez Roux restaurant. We will definitely stay overnight when next we're in the area.

This is a beautiful old hotel adjacent to Muirfield Golf Course.||The interior is very old school and traditional with lots of historic touches including a library, grand piano and lots of pictures of famous visitors to the hotel down the years. The gardens are manicured and lovely and there is a croquet lawn at the front.||Our bedroom was well sized and followed the same style. The shower was very good and the bathroom large. There was a TV and side table with books. The bed was comfortable. Tea and coffee was available on request.||Breakfast was excellent - a modest buffet selection and then hot food menu, including porridge, eggs and full Scottish breakfasts.||Prices were expensive. Staff were very good.

Had afternoon tea for two as a Christmas gift. Beautiful setting, ate in conservatory overlooking gardens. Good selection of teas available plus coffee. Served two warm savoury dishes & sandwiches. Then, 2 small scones & clotted cream & jam. Lots of small tray bakes & two different cakes. There was quite a significant amount of food!! All very scrumptious! Never ending tea & coffee!! Very pleasant service, staff very professional & polite!! Had a lovely afternoon experience. You can either dress up or down!! Just make sure you are hungry & have elastic waisted clothes!!

A beautiful setting, well kept gardens, charming accommodations, original art and warm, genuinely hospitable staff. Dining was a very nice experience too - delicious food and top notch service. ||The hotel has recently been sold to an investment firm. We are hoping they’ll maintain the charm and intimate feel of the property.

Such a lovely place to stay! Comfortable and delightful staff. Our room 5 had wonderful views over the golf course. The gardens are gorgeous and a delight to walk around.|Dinner was mostly superb - especially the pork. The ravioli was a bit disappointing and I would not recommend it, but my husband loved his terrine. Kipper for breakfast was delicious, probably better than full Scottish which my husband had.|I would love to return and stay for longer.

We stayed at Greywalls as we were attending the Scottish Open. The location was superb, as the course was in walking distance. ||The hotel itself is clean, but dated. For a five star hotel, we were shocked that there was no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. This seems like a very basic requirement. ||We were directed by the staff that a tray could be provided on request, what arrived was a very basic selection with no biscuits etc. Comparing this to the Fingal and Prestonfield House (also five star) this was quite poor as both other properties provided home made biscuits/shortbread to go along with the tea and coffee. For the price point, I'd expect a lot more than having to ask for a kettle. ||Breakfast was good, staff very friendly but we were disappointed that the tattie scone came dry as it is quite common practice on a scottish fry that tattie scones are served crisp and pan fried. The scones were warm but otherwise dry - a bit odd when everything was of a good standard. ||Overall, a good stay but underwhelming for the price point.

A lovely 2 night stay! Overindulged in luxury, we had a lovely champagne afternoon tea, explored the beautiful gardens and enjoyed a 3 course dinner. The service is fantastic, small but very friendly team. Each are so polite and a credit to the business. We stayed in a room on the golf wing, lovely view of the course. Really enjoyed our stay, 5* stay with 7* service.

Hotel was lovely and clean. We would have liked facilities to make tea and coffee in our room. The staff were professional and friendly. We had dinner in the restaurant which was delicious. I would like to say how lovely our waitress was. I'm so sorry I can't remember her name but she was from Hamilton, Australia and she made us feel very comfortable and welcome. We are from Hamilton, Scotland. Thanks for a great stay and the gardens are lovely.

Yelp
Maybe a 4.5 star experience but I can't bring myself to round down, so up it is! An absolutely stunning hotel and restaurant. Well worth the 35 mins drive from Edinburgh city centre. Impressive to say the least. We took my mum there for Mother's Day as they had a reasonably priced set menu on offer (I say reasonably in the sense that I'd have expected to pay more at a chez roux restaurant!). The mains of confit of duck and beef were fabulous. My Yorkshire pudding was a bit greasy but I'm picking fault here. I ate the whole thing! My pâté starter was tasty, kind of terrine like, wrapped in pastry. Yummy. My mum and brother both had the haddock. It seemed to go down well (i don't eat fish so couldn't try) although Simon said he didn't think what he had was representative of the menu description. Clean plates all round though! My cheese board was the star of the show for me. Check out the picture I posted. Yes! It was ALL mine! I liked that you didn't have to pay a supplement for the cheese as all too often greedy restaurants attempt to do. Not here! 6 small but adequate bits of cheese each of which are explained upon serving. Top it off with quince jelly, a generous portion of crackers, grapes, celery AND chutney... Drool..... The food was gorgeous, not without tiny faults here and there but you'd have to look very hard to pick at anything really. The small touches really made the experience 5 star for me. Homemade canapés, warm bread and homemade treats with our coffee inc macaroons, blackberry jellies and chocolate covered walnuts. I was so stuffed by that point but it would have been rude not to....:) The only thing I could criticise was the service. It was a bit slow. I don't mind having a lazy Sunday lunch but why they moved us from our comfy fire seat to the dinner table but took another 15 mins to serve the starters is beyond me. Move us when the food is nearly ready next time please. Unfortunately it started to snow as we left - I had really wanted to take a walk around the grounds. From what I could see of the garden from the window I know it will be beautiful in the summer. I took a peek at the afternoon tea menu and I will definitely be back! The prices seemed quite reasonable. You must go here! It's more of a special occasion place but if you have loads of money or just fancy a blow out then what the hell!

Yelp
This place is located far away from all the turmoil of every day's life, but still close enough to get into Edinburgh under half an hour. A hidden gem stone! Get first class servings, walk along the sandy beaches, view parts of the Firth of Forth, experience some of the surrounding golf clubs...... That's what I did. As soon as you drive into the private pathway you feel like being sent back in time. The staff welcomes you with elegant courtesy and you are accompanied to your room, feeling at home straight away (some less or more I assume :-) ). The rooms are adequately decorated and very clean. We had a cheaper priced room, but be wary that the cheapest room during off peak season is about £240 for 2 people sharing. Lol. If you can call this cheap..... For single occupancy I think you pay from £210 upwards. it's outrageous that single people are always charged more. As we have the money.... When dining you are being served with gallant mannerism ensuring that your needs are being met satisfactory. The food is very tasty and delicious, but take into account that if you eat in the a la cart restaurant you might be hit by a higher than £50 bill charge per person. So be prepared! The menu changes, such expect to get something different another time around. If you want to spoil your other half - then do! There is no doubt that because of its prestigious and expensive existence this place might only be affordable for special occasions or if you are not hit by recession. But if you are able to go there, enjoy the tranquillity that it has to offer. I know I will be back soon for Afternoon Tea, which is around £18.50 and therefore "just" affordable.

Yelp
Our experience at the Greywalls was only for lunch, which I would rate 4.5 stars. We never would have known or found this place, except we had a driver who suggested we might like to stop for a lunch somewhere "not a pub". And we ended up at a "country house" called the Greywalls! First off, the building, architecture, ambiance, etc. is all fantastic and certainly not something you find every day. You pull into the driveway to a stunning view of the curved front of the building, walk into what feels like an old-world classic country house, and then are seated in what feels like a living room or family room. Our group were seated on couches and comfy chairs in a room that felt a bit like a study, with a great view overlooking the golf course. Lunch was great, we had soup and mini-burgers with chips. The presentation of the food was very nice, and the three mini-burgers added up to the equivalent of a decent sized burger. And the burgers themselves were the absolute best I've ever had in the UK. (I'm American and generally find the burgers in UK are not so great.) The chips were also about the best I've had...obviously hand-cut and nice and thick! The service was great, and the prices were reasonable compared to everywhere else we ate during this vacation.

Yelp
the food was exquisite but the prices were a bit ott! the cleanliness of the place was top notch and the atmosphere was lovely. Although I did feel slightly out of place as a lot of the people were posh and the waiters were polite and posh too! recommended by me!
