Greywalls Hotel and Chez Roux, an SLH Hotel

Avoid like the plague. This used to be a wonderful, unique getaway. It's been bought up by a chain, Marine and Lawn, and ruined. We spent nearly a week trying to make the booking: multiple unanswered calls, and emails and voicemails with no replies. Eventually managed to catch someone at the hotel itself and booked. Then heard reports of very poor service both here and at another hotel in the group - staff mostly inexperienced, barely supervised and too young to serve alcohol. Desperately inappropriate for a venue charging premium rates. Tried to get reassurance - again, left messages that didn't get a reply. By now I realised that the new owners have made swingeing cuts to the staffing and that if we went ahead with spending the best part of a thousand pounds on a two night stay for two people we would have been bitterly disappointed. I left voicemails and emails cancelling and requesting a reply to confirm this. It took 5 days before I got a reply. We'll definitely not be back, or try any of Marine and Lawn's other venues.

A wonderful hotel for a special birthday celebration. The location itself is special, looking over Muirfield Golf Course. The large gardens, great for strolling round, are dominated by the beautiful hotel building. Inside antique furniture adds to the relaxing and tranquil atmosphere within a unique and quaint setting. We were warmly welcomed by Craig who showed us the main public areas and took us to our very comfortable and clean bedroom. Our dining experience both at dinner and breakfast was very enjoyable with great food and attention. Superb Kate and attentive and friendly general manager Ian provided a level of personal attention and care that one can only dream of. Overall, our stay at Greywalls was probably our best-ever hotel experience and we hope to return.

A truly fabulous hotel that feels like more of a home than a hotel. My son and I visited for a short golf break and we loved it. I sat with a smile on my face enjoying a whisky by the fire with sensational piano music from resident pianist Tony. The breakfasts and evening food was delicious. The rooms were spacious and extremely comfortable. The staff were exceptionally friendly and professional and welcoming. This will now be our go to hotel in the area.

What can I say? It was an absolute delight to have a betwixmas break at Greywalls with my husband. I was always aware of Greywalls, but it is quite close to home, so I had not really considered it as somewhere for a break. This year was different because I just wanted a few days of relaxation and boy, did this meet my requirements! We stayed in the Golf Wing and awoke to wonderful views over Muirfield each morning. The hotel itself is quirky and different, but in a very good way. |I'm sure I haven't discovered everything yet, but the main part of the house consists of a series of rooms. A small bar near the main entrance, various dining areas to the other side, my favourite place next; the library with its real fire and an excellent pianist who entertains on certain nights. Beyond there, it is the reading room before the entrance to the downstairs bedrooms. |The extensive grounds are wonderful. We really must return in summer to see them in their full glory. |Although I described the hotel as quirky, it gives the hotel that certain "something" that is difficult to find in large, modern hotels. It feels like a home, and that certainly leaves you relaxed and rested. |The food, from a Chez Roux establishment, is exactly as you would expect. Delicious, and beautiful to look at. We ate there every evening and were never disappointed. Breakfast consisted of a buffet section of cereals, cheeses, fruits, yoghurt, and fruit juices. Hot food was cooked to order. I'd love to find out from the chef how to master consistently perfect poached eggs! |The quality comes at a cost, but we considered it worth every £. |There is one other thing that gives hotels that certain "something" and that is their staff. They have excellent employees at Greywalls from the wonderful Javier, to the younger members of staff in the restaurant. All staff members are friendly, helpful and a pleasure to chat to. They just "fit" with the relaxed way of life at Greywalls.|In conclusion, I am so glad I made the decision to take this break. Even my husband said it was definitely one of my better decisions. We will certainly return in the summer, but I definitely want to spend part of the betwixmas/New Year break here again. |Many thanks for a very enjoyable stay.

Excellent 1 night stay in this beautiful hotel. Can highly recommend as a quiet luxury stay for couples and solo travellers, superior service and very warm and comfortable interiors. In the golf wing the bed was soft and views were beautiful. Javier and Craig both were very helpful and offered high levels of customer service.

We had a fantastic experience today at the Cookery Demonstration and Lunch menu with Michel Roux Jr at Greywalls Hotel and Chef Roux. The staff were all fabulous and made us very welcome and the event itself was very well organised and run. The cookery demonstration with Chef Roux was excellent, with a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The lunch and wine pairings were incredible - delicious and very generous servings. Would definitely recommend this event and we will absolutely look out for this again in future.

A beautiful setting, well kept gardens, charming accommodations, original art and warm, genuinely hospitable staff. Dining was a very nice experience too - delicious food and top notch service. ||The hotel has recently been sold to an investment firm. We are hoping they’ll maintain the charm and intimate feel of the property.

Genuine old world charm with charismatic flare.......||My family and I had the pleasure of spending some time at Greywalls, we dined in the restaurant and I can confidently say this place is on a different level altogether. ||We were met on arrival by Kate who welcomed us and seated us in the lounge for aperitif drinks and perusal of the fine menu, we were given plenty time to chat and enjoy our drinks , Kate interacted with us adding wonderful personality filled hospitality, when we were ready Kate escorted us to our table in the restaurant, we then were given the pleasure of Andrea's our host throughout our dining experience, the staff seem to be very genuine and happy to look after guests to a extremely high standard of service topped off with charisma and flare......||I must mention another outstanding member of the team Ian Gray who is the General Manager, we met him and he is different level management, takes a genuine interest in the guests and nothing is too much trouble.|Treat yourself to the finest hotel and dining experience Scotland has to offer.|7 Star experience.....|Thank you to Ian and all your wonderful hospitable team.

Maybe a 4.5 star experience but I can't bring myself to round down, so up it is! An absolutely stunning hotel and restaurant. Well worth the 35 mins drive from Edinburgh city centre. Impressive to say the least. We took my mum there for Mother's Day as they had a reasonably priced set menu on offer (I say reasonably in the sense that I'd have expected to pay more at a chez roux restaurant!). The mains of confit of duck and beef were fabulous. My Yorkshire pudding was a bit greasy but I'm picking fault here. I ate the whole thing! My pâté starter was tasty, kind of terrine like, wrapped in pastry. Yummy. My mum and brother both had the haddock. It seemed to go down well (i don't eat fish so couldn't try) although Simon said he didn't think what he had was representative of the menu description. Clean plates all round though! My cheese board was the star of the show for me. Check out the picture I posted. Yes! It was ALL mine! I liked that you didn't have to pay a supplement for the cheese as all too often greedy restaurants attempt to do. Not here! 6 small but adequate bits of cheese each of which are explained upon serving. Top it off with quince jelly, a generous portion of crackers, grapes, celery AND chutney... Drool..... The food was gorgeous, not without tiny faults here and there but you'd have to look very hard to pick at anything really. The small touches really made the experience 5 star for me. Homemade canapés, warm bread and homemade treats with our coffee inc macaroons, blackberry jellies and chocolate covered walnuts. I was so stuffed by that point but it would have been rude not to....:) The only thing I could criticise was the service. It was a bit slow. I don't mind having a lazy Sunday lunch but why they moved us from our comfy fire seat to the dinner table but took another 15 mins to serve the starters is beyond me. Move us when the food is nearly ready next time please. Unfortunately it started to snow as we left - I had really wanted to take a walk around the grounds. From what I could see of the garden from the window I know it will be beautiful in the summer. I took a peek at the afternoon tea menu and I will definitely be back! The prices seemed quite reasonable. You must go here! It's more of a special occasion place but if you have loads of money or just fancy a blow out then what the hell!

This place is located far away from all the turmoil of every day's life, but still close enough to get into Edinburgh under half an hour. A hidden gem stone! Get first class servings, walk along the sandy beaches, view parts of the Firth of Forth, experience some of the surrounding golf clubs...... That's what I did. As soon as you drive into the private pathway you feel like being sent back in time. The staff welcomes you with elegant courtesy and you are accompanied to your room, feeling at home straight away (some less or more I assume :-) ). The rooms are adequately decorated and very clean. We had a cheaper priced room, but be wary that the cheapest room during off peak season is about £240 for 2 people sharing. Lol. If you can call this cheap..... For single occupancy I think you pay from £210 upwards. it's outrageous that single people are always charged more. As we have the money.... When dining you are being served with gallant mannerism ensuring that your needs are being met satisfactory. The food is very tasty and delicious, but take into account that if you eat in the a la cart restaurant you might be hit by a higher than £50 bill charge per person. So be prepared! The menu changes, such expect to get something different another time around. If you want to spoil your other half - then do! There is no doubt that because of its prestigious and expensive existence this place might only be affordable for special occasions or if you are not hit by recession. But if you are able to go there, enjoy the tranquillity that it has to offer. I know I will be back soon for Afternoon Tea, which is around £18.50 and therefore "just" affordable.

Our experience at the Greywalls was only for lunch, which I would rate 4.5 stars. We never would have known or found this place, except we had a driver who suggested we might like to stop for a lunch somewhere "not a pub". And we ended up at a "country house" called the Greywalls! First off, the building, architecture, ambiance, etc. is all fantastic and certainly not something you find every day. You pull into the driveway to a stunning view of the curved front of the building, walk into what feels like an old-world classic country house, and then are seated in what feels like a living room or family room. Our group were seated on couches and comfy chairs in a room that felt a bit like a study, with a great view overlooking the golf course. Lunch was great, we had soup and mini-burgers with chips. The presentation of the food was very nice, and the three mini-burgers added up to the equivalent of a decent sized burger. And the burgers themselves were the absolute best I've ever had in the UK. (I'm American and generally find the burgers in UK are not so great.) The chips were also about the best I've had...obviously hand-cut and nice and thick! The service was great, and the prices were reasonable compared to everywhere else we ate during this vacation.

the food was exquisite but the prices were a bit ott! the cleanliness of the place was top notch and the atmosphere was lovely. Although I did feel slightly out of place as a lot of the people were posh and the waiters were polite and posh too! recommended by me!
