How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Reykjavik, Iceland

"A higher-end restaurant specializing in Icelandic ingredients and a refined dining setting, recommended for splurges on dishes like grilled reindeer, smoked puffin, and arctic char; the tasting menu (served for the whole table) is suggested as a way to sample regional flavors across several courses." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. "Grillmarkaðurinn (Grill Market) The award-winning Grillmarkaðurinn (Grill Market), known for working with local farmers and suppliers to create meals that are fresh, organic, seasonal, and delicious, is a definite culinary highlight for foodies visiting Iceland. The welcoming and impressive interior blends contemporary style withnatural textiles, as well as elements like moss and basalt. The menu is generally centered around fish and meat, ranging from salted cod with lobster salad to grilled pork ribs and dry-aged rib eye, but there are vegetarian dishes available, too. Everything is grilled to perfection andartfully presented on wooden cutting boards. The wine list is expertly curated, too. Staff are professional and friendly."

An unforgettable dinner at Grillmarkaðurinn! We went for the 8-course tasting menu and every dish was a masterpiece – beautifully presented, bursting with flavour, and Michelin-quality. For my husband’s birthday, we got complimentary champagne and a dessert with a light fountain – such a lovely touch! Special thanks to our amazing waitress, Raquel, who went above and beyond and made the evening even more special. A true credit to the restaurant. Yes, it’s pricey, but this is Iceland – and the quality, creativity, and service make it worth every krona.

We had such a great dining experience here! The food was great, we ordered a tasting menu and every course was delicious. Our server Vicky was super attentive and lovely. Loved this! Plus it was my mother’s birthday and we got a great plate for the birthday with some deserts.

On our final day in Iceland, we went to this place. We were fortunate to get a table for two, but I’d suggest making a reservation. We tried the 6-course tasting menu, which was a fantastic way to sample a variety of Icelandic dishes. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and the restaurant’s interior was truly a masterpiece—it had such an aesthetic vibe.

My daughter and I had a lovely dinner, the ambience was very nice, service was outstanding and the food was delicious. The crispy duck salad, smoked artichoke char and salmon were delicious. I wish I could remember the name of the young woman who served us- she was absolutely delightful.

If you are used to having your meat cooked anything other than medium rare, be prepared for meat dishes here to be rare or medium rare. The food we ordered (shared between three people) filled us up. There was puffin (strange taste and very rare), steak (medium rare), lamb chops (medium) and Salmon (best dish of the night fully cooked) This is fine dining so be prepared for the price to match the meal. Atmosphere is amazing though, you feel like your in Iceland.

This was our first stop in the city, and we enjoyed our experience. It didn’t blow me away, but it was good and the service was great! We really loved the reindeer burgers! We talked about them for the whole next day. They were really delicious. Cooked perfectly. The other two apps we got were just OK. We split a bunch of small plates, so I can’t vouch for any of the dinners.

If you're looking for a wild menu that has all the flavors of the Arctic than look no further. The menu here has whale steak, grilled puffin, reindeer sliders and more! Located just behind the buildings on the main drag. It's a little hard to find but that's part of the charm. The ambiance of this place is like an Icelandic cave; dark, stormy interiors and bar designs. There's an open kitchen upstairs and honestly, even the bathrooms are worth a visit just for the design! Not gonna lie, this restaurant is expensive and you definitely want to book ahead but it is well worth the hype. Food was delicious and service was stellar.
