How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Reykjavik, Iceland

"A higher-end restaurant specializing in Icelandic ingredients and a refined dining setting, recommended for splurges on dishes like grilled reindeer, smoked puffin, and arctic char; the tasting menu (served for the whole table) is suggested as a way to sample regional flavors across several courses." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. "Grillmarkaðurinn (Grill Market) The award-winning Grillmarkaðurinn (Grill Market), known for working with local farmers and suppliers to create meals that are fresh, organic, seasonal, and delicious, is a definite culinary highlight for foodies visiting Iceland. The welcoming and impressive interior blends contemporary style withnatural textiles, as well as elements like moss and basalt. The menu is generally centered around fish and meat, ranging from salted cod with lobster salad to grilled pork ribs and dry-aged rib eye, but there are vegetarian dishes available, too. Everything is grilled to perfection andartfully presented on wooden cutting boards. The wine list is expertly curated, too. Staff are professional and friendly."

I dined here during my time in Iceland and it was unbelievable. It is a stunning restaurant with cool aesthetics. I dined alone so ordered a la carte. I had the whale steak for starter which was highly recommended. It was cooked well and had a great baste and sauce to go with it. For main I had one of the speciality cut beef steaks with a side of mash and chimichurri. The flavours were great and the steak was so tender and cooked well. For dessert I had the melting chocolate with ice cream, which had the theatrics at the table which was enjoyable. Also had a glass of wine. Staff there were attentive and friendly. Couldn't fault the experience, would go back if I could!

We had an incredible experience with the tasting menu at Grillmarkaðurinn! We went for the 8 course tasting menu The Starters: The duck spring rolls were a great start—perfectly crispy. The chicken skewers were glazed and cooked to perfection. While the vegetable tempura was well-made, it wasn't quite to our personal taste. We also tried whale steak for the first time; it was very tasty and a unique highlight. The reindeer mini burgers were absolutely outstanding and a must-try. One surprise was the beef, which was served cold—not quite what we were expecting for that course. The Main: The lamb was absolutely perfect—tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Dessert & Drinks: The dessert platter was a massive highlight! The lava chocolate cake was amazing, and we loved the surprise of the coffee ice cream inside the chocolate sphere. The mixed fruit sorbets were perfect, though we did find the actual fresh fruit on the platter to be a bit underripe. For drinks, the Royale Christmas cocktail was sophisticated but lacked a bit of sweetness for my liking. We also ordered a mojito and Moscow mule which were very well done. Overall, a beautiful atmosphere and a very memorable meal. The service was exceptional. Highly recommended for the reindeer and lamb alone!

23-10-25 Amazing restaurant, the manager Paul was very professional. Gave us drinks on the house, due to the wait for our table. They were fantastic. Love the food here! I had the salmon. A bit pricey for the little condiments. I attended the location again the 24, and the portion sizes of the salmon, presentation, drinks were diffident from the day previous day. Staff also didn't know what was available as for bread, and Tabasco... he had to ask a fellow waitress. When we received the bread it was dry and the waiter said that was all available, but miraculously they "found" more. In all, I would return to this location.

This is rated as the best restaurant in Reykjavík and no doubt it’s the most upscale restaurant in town. I had vegan steak which was unbelievably good. The service was amazing. She made us feel like home. I came here to celebrate my birthday. She surprised me with champagne and sweets. Just wonderful. Also the ambience is so romantic. This is a place where you definitely want to try at least one time especially if you come here for any celebration or… maybe… proposal. I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back again.

The best meal I've ever had. The restaurant is beautiful with highly attentive staff who explain the best way to eat your chosen dishes and what best accompanies them. The food was absolutely exquisite and the portions were much bigger than I thought they'd be. Can honestly say this is the best food I've ever eaten.

Cool place, food was okay, overall it was alright but overshadowed as we had a problem that was fixed but meant eating our dinner after the other guests in our party. I appreciate accidents happen but could have been handled better which tainted the atmosphere and our experience. I feel our tomahawk steak got delivered to the wrong table due to the time it takes to prepare and we sat down and ordered before the other table. We were given a lovely desert. Its only right to give honest feedback in a review.

An unforgettable dinner at Grillmarkaðurinn! We went for the 8-course tasting menu and every dish was a masterpiece – beautifully presented, bursting with flavour, and Michelin-quality. For my husband’s birthday, we got complimentary champagne and a dessert with a light fountain – such a lovely touch! Special thanks to our amazing waitress, Raquel, who went above and beyond and made the evening even more special. A true credit to the restaurant. Yes, it’s pricey, but this is Iceland – and the quality, creativity, and service make it worth every krona.

Visited on our honeymoon and had one of the best meals of our life. Goran made sure we were absolutely taken care of and we will never forget it. Compliments to the chef, the whale, lamb and reindeer were all five stars. Would gladly recommend to friends and family and would be honored to come back!
