After 3 hours at the Desert Botanical Garden we were tired n thirsty, my husband wanted to go to PFChang but I insisted on going to Grimaldi pizzeria, I was curious what a charcoal fired brick oven pizza would taste like, I'm a pizza aficionado having been in Italy so many times n had the best in Naples.
In Italy it was always wood fired pizza oven so I have no idea what charcoal brick oven might be like. We walked in by the kitchen n smelled nothing which surprised me already, the restaurant was almost empty but there seemed to be a lot of take out orders. I was upset there was no Coke, I hated Pepsi, my idea is a pizza has to go w a Coke, luckily their margarita was very good, it's almost good everywhere in Scottsdale bc it's made w some cactus pear juice n priced right at $12. The 16 inches pizza was really overpriced $30 bc it was very thin and the brick oven was overhyped as it was not tasting any different from a normal oven. I originally requested the Don pizza $25 but to substitute the sausage w mushrooms, the server said it was not possible, why not? But whatever, he said he could order it separately, I didn't get it where was the difference, the pizza came not only thin but the mushroom was missing n to make matter worse we were charged extra for 1topping less that is why I took away 1 star. Unlike in Italy or even on the ship, a real pizzeria had a cook throwing the dough in the air after pounding it, it was a show, fun to watch, apparently this was premade somewhere and that was why there was not much flavor. The inside could be cooked a little longer, I asked the server if he could cook it a few minutes more, he said no, wow this dude sure loved to say no, the last time I asked in a restaurant in Huntington Beach they gave me another one piping hot, it was a good idea to say yes or what you get is a 2 stars.
Needless to say I was very disappointed n stay up to write this review, I'm sorry but I'd rather have a PizzaHut, people who rated this 4 stars have not been in Italy or New York City.
