The Best Coffee Shops In Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"It turns out punk and heavy metal go well with matcha lattes, especially because we could all use a break from Norah Jones and early 2000s Maroon 5. The fun playlist and big industrial space make West Philly’s Grindcore House a good place to grab breakfast or set up shop for the day. And they do an all-vegan menu loaded with pastries and sandwiches like the Grizzli, stacked with baked tofu, “bacon,” cheese, and maple compound butter on a biscuit from Miss Rachel’s Pantry." - alison kessler

Grindcore House Review - West Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"When you think of coffee house music, Norah Jones and early Maroon 5 probably come to mind. But Metallica is more Grindcore's speed—as it turns out, punk and heavy metal go surprisingly well with a matcha latte, too. The playlist and big industrial space make West Philly’s Grindcore House a comfortable place to grab breakfast or set up shop for the day. Their all-vegan menu is loaded with pastries and sandwiches like the Grizzli, stacked with baked tofu, “bacon,” cheese, and maple compound butter on a biscuit from Miss Rachel’s Pantry. (If you're closer to South Philly than West, Grindcore House also has a location near Dickinson Square Park.) photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo" - Alison B. I have come to Grindcore West so many times, but I’m finally writing a review. :) I can’t get enough of their bagel and “cream cheese” and didn’t realize how much I have missed this simple breakfast as a vegan. my favorite is a sesame bagel with “cream cheese”. All of the “cream cheese” flavors are sooo good. They always heat up the sandwiches and toast bagels perfectly which is really needed for the morning. There is plenty of space to be able to sit in this cafe which is nice. The decor is also very cool! Love the vibes. Update: adding pics of Emma sandwich(add on of “cheese” and mustard) and soup that I’ve gotten.

Went Mar 24 '25. Exceptional coffee, lip feel good mug, well toasted and tasty bagel and peanut butter, open space, good service, tables too high for comfortable laptop use. Be ready to listen to thrash metal such as Warbringer's The Sword and the Cross and to see Assholeparade art. The (vegan) brookies are okay- served room temp.

Google
As others say, the breakfast sandwiches are perfectly delicious. Our coffees were equally tasty. Everything was served hot and on nice dinnerware. There were a half dozen tables along with a long counter with stools looking out over the street. Great place to chill, savor, study, hang. Loved it!

Google
I love this place. Great vegan sandwiches and sweet treats. They also have delicious coffee, tea and other beverage options. My go to spot when I'm in West Philly.

Google
Top notch vegan fare, with some staff that makes me feel like an ass for placing an order. The products are soo good that even though I feel super uncomfortable simply entering, they could chuck my food out the door & I’d still go. Also, the south Philly location is better via service & atmosphere- none of that mean vibe.

Google
Nice staff, cool vibes, and very awakening space. The music will help you stay up to work or study. The coffee was good too.

Google
Great place for vegan treats, they usually have one or two gluten free snacks in their pastry display which is nice. Staff is pretty chill and it’s always a nice atmosphere when I go in. The decor is simple and pretty cool. There is not always a place to sit as it’s often occupied. I’ve never seen it packed in an uncomfortable way, but sometimes there are no available seats.

Google
I tried their lavender latte and Cuban breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was more tofu with mustard but it works. It was delicious and I had every bite. The latte was also great, I like lavender and it was subtle in taste but satisfied the craving!

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about this place. Well, I really love that there are a ton if not all vegan options, however, I was disappointed by some things. I know that the whole heavy metal thing as part of their theme but the music was so loud. I really didn't wanna listen to loud death metal while I was drinking my coffee with my friend. Kind of distracting to our conversation. I politely asked them to turn it down and they were happy to oblige. I'm pretty sure that's part of the theme though. So I won't be going in again. I have ordered takeout before and after my single experience sitting down inside. It's pretty good for a coffee shop. I haven't tried many of their desserts, though. I really need to. They used to have a vegan hoagie that I loved. They took it off the menu though , which was a bit disappointing . as far as the rest of the ambience, there's a counter right out front soon as you walk in the normal size pathway to get to the tables in the back. It's decorated with heavy metal memorabilia with kind of a pew style, seating arrangement against the wall. They are small tables with chairs on the opposite side. overall, I'm glad this is in the neighborhood because I have options for additional food options, however, due to the loud music, I usually just get take out.

Yelp
I went here with my boyfriend who is a huge metal/hardcore music fan and coffee lover, so this was the ultimate place for him. Since we were staying in the area, we walked to the location. It was your typical coffee shop vibe with brutal death metal music playing and band t-shirts and cool artwork throughout the space. The batista was friendly and told us about the current specials. Since they made their own homemade pumpkin syrup, I had to try the PSL so I got that iced and my boyfriend got an Americano. Both drinks were great! If you love coffee and that type of music, this place will be your vibe.

Yelp
Grindcore West is back open inside and I couldn't be happier! This spot is completely vegan and does an exceptional job of creating breakfast and lunch options that are beyond your basic vegan options. They make a lot of their ingredients fresh and use delicious meat alternatives that make each sandwich amazing. The staff are all so friendly and just overall great humans. I never have to wait too long for my order and everything is made fresh. If you are looking for a breakfast or lunch spot, this is it! Expect nothing but delicious drinks and food here whether you are vegan or not!

Yelp
Roast Beast sandwich: phenomenal. 6/5 Whatever peanut butter mousse bomb thing I had the other day: very very good 5/5 Breakfast sandwiches: pretty good. 3.5/5 Other sandwiches: good. 4/5 Coffee: pretty good 3.5/5 Other desserts: good 4/5 The main issues are: - The ambiance is very ehhhh. Metal music is cool, but you'd think the space would go more all in on the theme? The space is way too bright for the metal music (the walls are white). Black/darker paint would go a long way in transforming the space. The tables are slightly too high for the booth. There's lots of empty space. There's a giant mural on one wall, which is cool, but then otherwise the walls are completely empty. - They close so early! - Service can be questionable at times? The baristas aren't always the nicest/friendliest

Yelp
Used to have pleasant experiences with this joint. Now? No pastries, nothing I want to drink, and a barren, hot, loud interior. Ordered food that took forever. No good system for people to pick up their orders. I'll venture elsewhere for a weekend treat next time.

Yelp
If u live close ... or if u live far ... go here!!! Grindcore has had a home in my local coffee shop/quick bite/sandwich rotation for the past two yrs now. They have incredible vegan food that is so delicious and flavorful. Truly introduced me to the vegan meat and cheese possibilites and dare i say had a big role in convincing me to go vegetarian.... I almost always get the costmo breakfast sandwich, which has such great textures and a nice kick from the jalapenos. I love everything else ive tried including deli sandwiches (the fact that they do a vegan italian sandwich? Crazy....), pastries from crumb, bagels and cream cheese (sundried tomato is perf). They also do every coffee drink SO well like most coffee shops i love even if theyre amazing usually have at least some off days.... Never grindcore.....

Yelp
Grind house has vegan baked goods from Crust bakery and they are delicious! The cinnamon rolls are so soft!!! Definitely want to come back to try their sandwiches and coffee.

Yelp
I usually enjoy my lattes from Grindcore, but they are consistently really slow for a coffee shop. We did come on a busy Saturday, but we waited well over 30 minutes for 2 lattes. They kindly gave us a baked good as a "thank you" for waiting, but it seems like there has to be a way to streamline their drink/food prep process.

Led W.

Yelp
This place is number 1 in everything they do. Seriously I compare other places and grindcore wins every time. The lattes, the sandwiches and the desserts. I'm hooked on the lavender lattes. They have a certain attitude I love too. Like we know your number 1 kiss the ring!

Yelp
Soooooo. Freakin. Gooooood. Got the Greenwich and Chickpea sandwich. Both were delish. Also the peanut butter bomb. Definitely going back. Note: must order online.

Yelp
Great new West Philly coffee shop! Very clean, modern feel, some cozy tables and chairs in the back (albeit in a small space) and delicious vegan food/drink options. Solid coffee shops are hard to come by in West Philly, but this definitely has potential to become the new neighborhood go-to spot. Added bonuses: Plenty of free alt-milks to choose from, and a "bottomless" coffee option if you're planning to plant yourself at Grindcore for a few hours and get some reading or work done.

Yelp
This coffee shop has excellent and affordable vegan food, truly a treasure for the area! The online food ordering for pick up through their website is also really convenient, with real time info on what they have in stock.

Yelp
Amazing and unique vibe for a coffee shop. Their vegan cinnamon rolls are awesome, loved my visit!

Yelp
This may just be the best vegan breakfast sandwich I've ever had. The biscuits are warm, toasty and buttery. Tofu is very smokey and flavorful and the meat patty is absolutely delicious with a great meaty texture. Honestly at first the ratio threw me off a bit but the biscuits themselves are so good and the sandwhich so flavorful that it doesn't make a difference. Each bite is packed with juicy flavor that you would expect out of any typical breakfast sandwich from your local papi store but honestly this is even more flavor than most regular ones with real meat. - this coming from a meat eater who has been trying to limit meat consumption as of late - Raspberry latte was a little strong on the flavoring but still decent if you like that sort of thing. Can't wait to try some of their other items and baked goods !

Yelp
Grindcore House is on the corner of 42nd Street and Chester Avenue on USciences' campus. It's partnered with Crust Vegan Bakery so all their pastry items are from there. They're currently open from 8am-4pm and only offering takeout. You have to order online through their website and there's a table outside where you pickup your order. Everything is vegan, including their pastries and milk types. I ordered a Small Latte with soy milk ($4) and a Harvest Cookie ($2.25). Their prices are more expensive but reasonable considering everything is vegan and you'd normally pay extra for milk alternatives anyways. You have the choice of soy, almond, or coconut milk; oat, macadamia, and soy creamer cost extra. You can also adjust the caffeine level. Their latte was a bit watery for me at first, but it could be because I'm not used to soy milk. The cookie was hard but chewy. Since I like softer cookies I wasn't the biggest fan of it, but it was still tasty and not overly sweet. TLDR: A solid cafe option with plenty of milk alternative options and pastries for vegans. It's takeout only and you have to order online!

Yelp
Delicious spot for coffee! Love that they have oat milk. My latte was really smooth and their mochas are yummy. The chai is whatever, not my favorite to be honest. A friend of mine got the latte mate. Wouldn't recommend. It was literally just steamed milk. A little pricey in my opinion for the area but I would recommend. They also have an online ordering system which is super convenient and COVID friendly!

Yelp
It's coffee was alright but service sucks. It's a hipster shop run that really doesn't have any business in a neighborhood where most of the residents can't afford it. Staff is unfamiliar with the area and it's clear they're encroaching. It fits the St. Joe's vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an excellent coffee shop that eve try one should try. It is in a prime location away from the buzz of starbucks and the unpleasantries at Dunkin. The coffee here is exceptional, especially if you are looking for healthier or vegan options that are tasty and a good price. The staff here are very friendly and relatable. They are always very skilled at what they do and try to make your experience the best it can be. The best aspect of this cafe is the food you ca purchase. Very tasty and a good variety. A notabke mention is their Brookie! All options here are gluten free and completely customizable with the different ingrediants ad various assortments of milk. The cafe also has a good amount of seating for people to work and study. The seating allows for a decent amount of individuals without the noise and chais of other cafes around the area Overall a great new addition the the area that draws a friendly crowd!

Yelp
Went in today and this place was completely full! People tapping away on their keyboards sitting one to a booth or table. Desserts and sweets looked pretty good but I only ordered a chai tea latte, 20oz. Good size and price, but the drink itself was pretty bad. No sweetness at all, barely any chai flavoring, I didn't finish it. Seems like another average cafe but with gluten free/vegan options. I did appreciate the coconut cream and soy cream they put out for customers, though.

Yelp
Order: Hot Golden Latte with Shot of Espresso and Oat-milk, Grizzli Breakfast Sandwich Pros: So many great food options, and the Grizzli is probably one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had! Despite being vegan, the biscuit wasn't overly dry, the "bacon" had a good texture, and the maple compound butter wasn't overly sweet. For the latte, I was pleasantly surprised that the turmeric and lemongrass didn't clash with the espresso; was a really unique coffee experience. Cons: Went on a super rainy day and they only let you go up to the window, and gave you a paper bag that got super soggy. The barista didn't say anything. This is a very minor con, but the charm of the experience is what separates a local cafe from a Starbucks. Overall: My new fave place for a grab-and-go vegan breakfast (online ordering is very convenient), but the experience was underwhelming.

Shannon F.

Yelp
This place is the spot for some fantastic vegan breakfast. The sammies are on point and soo nostalgic, they also have some amazing baked goods. They have a ton of drinks too, i love the half-caffeine options as someone with chronic anxiety. The outdoor signage is super cool also.
google avatar

Rania Z.

Yelp
Nom nom nom. A little on the pricy side but worth it. Drinks are unique and tasty. They offer the widest variety of plant milks ever! I wish there were more places like this. I looove the jalapeño cream cheese and the frosted sugar cookies. The sandwiches are amazing too especially the one pictured. Try this place!
google avatar

Americo M.

Yelp
The flavor of the pastry is ok. Regarding customer service: When I let the person know this was my first time and asked if they had any recommendations for pastries. Their response was to "look at the online menu because I could tell you, but is too long'". Well, it is not.

Nikki L.

Yelp
My favorite place! Grindcore x Crust has THE BEST cold brew around. I don't know what magic they work, but the cold brew is so flavorful on its own without any milk or sugar. They also have THE BEST vegan breakfast sandwiches and desserts (the tiramisu and raspberry buns are my favorite, but really everything is amazing.) I get breakfast here at least once per week. Staff are always nice and pleasant as well. Convenient online ordering during the pandemic, which is still in place. So happy Grindcore x Crust came to the neighborhood!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
The breakfast sandwiches are AMAZING. This place has quickly become one of my favorite vegan restaurants in the city. The COVID ordering system is good; you order online and choose to receive a text or email when your food is done. It also gives you an immediate estimate for the exact time the food should be done but that hasn't been too accurate for me. When you're ready, you just go up to the door and they bring the food out (you can't go inside at all). There's no outdoor seating at the restaurant but it's just down the street from Clark park where there is plenty of free outdoor seating.
google avatar

Grace G.

Yelp
Crust + Grindcore, can it get any better? More Crust options than South Philly Grindcore. Plenty of GF options. Kind workers. Much cleaner/proper vibes than South Philly Grindcore. Nice, chill atmosphere. Beautiful t shirts for sale! Also a sandwich with vegan meat from herbivorous butcher? Gotta try it next time!
google avatar

Shubhi M.

Yelp
Great option for vegan/vegetarian people! The food is tasty and I appreciate all the alternative milk options. Not a huge fan of the death metal they have blasting all day, it's hard to get work done there.
google avatar

Charlotte C.

Yelp
Delicious drinks and snacks! I'm a big fan of the zucchini bread, Swamp Thing drink (mint syup & espresso, yummmmm), and coconut iced tea lemonade. Their online ordering system is fast & easy. Pay them a visit!
google avatar

KJ S.

Yelp
Happy to have another coffee shop in the neighborhood that is suitable for working for a bit. The Brookie (brownie/cookie) is amazing! Chai tea was average. Happy to have electrical outlets and Wi-Fi, but the heavy metal music in the background can be distracting. Can't wait to go back and try more of their options.

Mia S.

Yelp
I just went for the first time and will definitely coming back again. The person at the counter was so nice and kept me updated on my order. The food was exceptional and I loved my coffee. Love this place, especially that it was vegan. Super good and a great price for what you get!
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
I'm so glad a good coffee place opened up here! The cold brew and nitro are great; they have almost like a chocolate finish. The nitro is pricey though I think it's like 5 bucks which seems high too me. The space itself is clean and I love how the seat cushions are rock/metal bands.

Hannah S.

Yelp
Went to Grindcore House x Crust today to do some work and get lunch with a friend. The location is super accessible by public transit! The shop atmosphere is a little bit industrial/cold with high ceilings and hard surfaces. The tables are slightly too tall to be comfortable with the booths but there was plenty of seating over the 3 hours we spent there. The metal music playing was a great addition though maybe not for everyone. I had a sandwich, muffin, and coffee that were all great. My friend's bagel, brookie, and tea were also all very tasty. Five stars for good quality VEGAN (!!) fare at a reasonable price. Minus one star for the uncomfy booth and steril vibe.
google avatar

Anna O.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwiches! Tried a few different ones and all have been tasty and fresh. Great lattes and good service also

Margot W.

Yelp
Grindcore is an awesome vegan cafe to visit when you want to treat yourself. It's a little expensive but always worth it! My go-to gluten free snacks are the s'mores bars and the everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese (they are VERY generous with cream cheese and this is definitely the best flavor). The gf donuts are a little weird--cakey with a corn flavor--but *shine* when dipped in drinks. My partner's favorite is the lemon danish (not gluten free unfortunately) and the chai latte. It tastes more like fresh tea than a syrupy concentrate, and you can choose the sweetness level. We also love that they are pick-up only right now and are taking covid seriously. My only complaint with Grindcore is that it's so good, it is hard to stop ourselves from going every morning!

Kristina N.

Yelp
Best vegan breakfast sandwiches around, maybe that I've ever had. You can't go wrong here!

Maxwell J.

Yelp
Super underwhelming especially for how ridiculous the sandwiches are priced. The bagel breakfast sandwich made me incredibly sick. Would not recommend whatsoever. Steer clear unless you want the stomach bug.

Gavriel C.

Yelp
The perfect way to start the morning. Covid safe and delicious. What more is there? I love their raspberry mocha and their sandwiches. When the potato leek soup is there it's a good day.

Hayley P.

Yelp
I'm so excited about this place opening up! Versatile menu with yummy drinks, sandwiches, and bakery items. It's in a great location with a nice sunny atmosphere. Definitely check it out!
