Atlanta Restaurant Owners Make Permanent Pandemic-Related Changes Including Higher Wages and Paid Time Off | Eater Atlanta

"We offered family-style meals while doing takeout-only early on, but those ended when dining rooms reopened; one thing that might stick around is our to-go blood orange margarita, the 'Large Marge,' which we might package for continued sales." - Lia Picard

Cool place. Fast food vibe down stairs as you order at the counter and wait to get your food. Upstairs is a bar/ restaurant so maybe a different feel up there. The food was fresh and portions are large. Not the best burger around, but definitely not bad. Give it a try if your in the area.

Not much going on during a warm lazy day in Athens Georgia, so we decided to sop at Grindhouse Killer burgers as we knew they had a welcome pet policy and my staffy Pit bull Yaegar was along for the ride. The only hospitable spot was in the 2 table outside portion of the restaurant, where by the way there is NO service provided. So I go to the downstairs bar and get our beverages and some menu’s go back to our table to get the orders and then walk back to the bartender to make our order and payed. It was quite pleasant with NO-ONE to bother us or our dog. They did actually bring our food. The cook must have had a rough day because he forgot salt and pepper on EVERYTHING, very bland to say the least, ( we did order a NO seasoning burger for Yaegar)I’m sure the Cowboy burger would have been better with a little salt, alas we had NO condiments on the table and I was getting tired of walking back inside

Google
I sent the sweet potato chips back back because they were floppy and bendable. So sad because the blue cheese dip was large and amazing. I told the cashier the Coke zero was out. Brussel sprouts exactly like I make at home. My kids burger was soooo juicy. I would try more specialty burgers. The fried green tomatoes app was super cheesy. Took a few things home. Nice rainy window for my 1st Athens sitdown. Don't know what upstairs looked like due to a Minor lol

Grindhouse is located on Lumpkin Street north of the intersection of Lumpkin and Millege. This local chain has an inside counter service main floor, and a full service open air second floor with a bar. We went for lunch and chose the second floor, which turns out to be a little difficult on a windy day. You’ll need to hold onto your napkins. This was our first visit, so we asked what some of the favorites were, and landed on the Dixie and Yankee burgers. All the burgers were perfectly cooked, and both the regular fries and sweet potato fries were just the right amount of crispiness. I don’t think it was hunger talking when I say that all the food was delicious. There was only one server working and she didn’t seem too happy about it, so she didn’t make small talk or had time to be very attentive to us. Nevertheless, we were able to be seated serve served, eat, and pay within an hour. This will definitely be on my list of places to go in the future. Junior beef Yankee style burger with sweet potato fries and water, Junior beef Yankee style burger with regular fries and a drink, Junior beef Dixie style burger with french fries and a drink; $45.36 before tip.

My 3rd time visiting Grindhouse. It was just as it remembered it years ago. Food was very good. All 3 times has been someone's birthday 😅

Google
2 burgers, 1 chicken sandwich ,1 fring (o-rings/fries), 1 soda, 1 shake.... $48!! You order at counter, take your own food to your table, deliver your trash to bin, and place your tray up yourself...... They still ask for tip at register when ordering. Food was good, but upcharge for the "frings" is a bit much considering you are getting a regular size fries with 3 o-rings on top. Place is clean and staff were friendly.

Kimberly S.

Google
Ditty Douth fried are good. Cream nachos were the unexpected dessert I never knew I needed.

Tyler H.

Google
The fries, beer and milkshakes is about all this place has going for it. Frings upgrade equaled 4 cold soggy onion rings. The burger is tiny. Litterally smaller than a kids cheeseburger from McDonald's. To top it off I did end up getting awful food poisoning from here so I for sure won't be back.

Yelp
We got the frings (o-rings and sweet potato fries), cheesy puffs (fried pimento cheese), impossible burger Dixie style, mocha milkshake, brussel sprouts, and turkey burger with American cheese lettuce wrapped. Great service even for takeout. Lady was upset sweet and gave us suggestions also didn't rush us. Cute and casual vibe. Mocha milkshake - 8/10 a little too sweet for me and wished it was more coffee flavor but solid Frings- I wish they gave us more it was just a couple of each but sweet potato fries were 10/10 AMAZING. O-rings were a lil under seasoned but 7/10 Cheesy puffs- very interesting texture. Wish it was a bit spicier but have t had something like this. Would have also appreciated more crunch. Great with chipotle ranch. LOVE 9/10 Turkey burger lettuce wrapped - this was so funny! I go pretty much a whole half head of lettuce. Great flavor even without the cheese. 8/10 Brussel sprouts - good flavor but a little burnt. Love the glaze a bit greasy tho 8/10

Yelp
Maaaan it was aite lol after years of seeing GKB and driving by i decided to give it a try. Now this is in a college town, but i had time to stop at this location on this particular day. And from the way my food tasted, everybody at UGA making Cs. The burger needed seasoning, the lettuce Bun i had was on the bottom so I had to rearrange it and it just wasn't enough lettuce to encompass the patty. C- The fries were fries not good but not special. I actually cannot even remember them lol C. Give them a try i guess. Maybe I just ordered wrong. But yall need to study

Yelp
I was trying to figure out if this place was open on Memorial Day so gave them a call, since they hadn't posted their holiday hours on Google. I was stuck talking to an AI agent who insisted the place was open that evening (i.e., on Memorial Day). I somewhat by accident then noticed a footer on their website that mentioned being closed on Memorial Day. I asked the AI agent about the website statement and it said oh yes, we're closed. They can't even train their LLMs right. I would have preferred they just not pretend to answer the phone.

Yelp
Were at it again. Ive heard about the Grindhouse in Athens since I moved here almost 6 years ago. It's a Stalpe of Athens as well as a Georgia Bulldogs hangout! Today we crossed it off the "to do list" & officially now put it on the "to do AGAIN" list. I've had a lot of burgers in my 64 years, but the Grindhouse is on a whole different level! Wifey ordered the impossible burger with Onion Rings. She said it was very delicious & promptly held up 5 fingers. Which = 5/5 she had an apple Cider beer! I ordered the Yankee Burger (double) with extras. Apple Bacon mushrooms avacado slices & red onions leafy greens lettuce. This was definitely a montage of flavors landing on my taste buds . I went in so hard, that the table across the room, commented as they left, "The way you ate the burger with singular tunnel vision made us wish we had ordered that hamburger as well" They were correct, I only stopped to lick the blue cheese off my fingers (sorry about my manners, but it was just that good) or to wipe whatever juice was running down my beard. I definitely give this yankee burger a 5/5 & the crinkle fries were crunchy with just the right amount of salt. My Drink, was a John Daly, Bourbon based with lemonade/sweet Tea & a splash of Pinapple Grindhouse You have been Tongue Tested

Charles M.

Yelp
Server wanted me to pay before I had ordered, before I had even seen a menu. When I finally got a menu (after two other people placed and received their orders), she was impatient and loudly sighed when I tried to tell her what I wanted. Then she said "I have a lot to do" and I replied, "now you have less" and got up leave and she uttered something under breath Will I ever set foot in this place again? Not in a million years; I'd give the place a zero if that were an option Food: it was good the last time I was here Service: unbelievably rude and disrespectful

Yelp
Walking in, I wasn't sure what to expect. But you walk in, you order at the counter and then they'll bring your food out to you at your chosen table. While they are known and are a burger restaurant, they also have hotdogs, salads, and some appetizers to choose from, as well as some shakes and malts. I ordered the dirty south fries and a small grindhouse salad. My boyfriend also ordered a build your own burger with double beef patties. Service was good, and food came out relatively on time (not too long, not too short). Plus they have an upstairs sports bar, and have multiple screens for sport games. Overall, would highly recommend coming here, but just be aware of the parking situation.

Yelp
After orientation of our soon to be freshman was over, we wanted one more taste of Athens before leaving town. We stopped at Grindhouse almost by mistake. This venue is in two levels and includes an open air patio upstairs which likely serves as a weekend night hotspot. Upon coming in, the dining room was a bit warm, as it was a hot day, so we opted to go upstairs for the air flow, which was a great call. We were a little early for the dinner rush, so it took a moment for someone to complete rock paper scissors to see who served our table. The guy we got was great and attentive. This is all about the burger and every one we ordered was simply amazing. The fact that everyone makes a burger and we all raved about ours should tell you this isn't the run of the mill burger joint. The buns were properly proportioned to the burger - meaning they didn't dominate the flavor of the burger and toppings. I loved that! Plus, there are lots of options for sides. The sweet potatoes fries were crinkle cut and very crispy. Outstanding! Beer and ciders are available, but served in cans, though thankfully include a chilled glass. Shakes looked amazing but we didn't try one. A must for our next stop.

Yelp
Affordable quality burgers with nice servers. We sat up stairs where they had a heated patio. My favorite was the Fries they were so delicious they came with a special sauce bacon crumble as well as ground beef jalapenos tomatoes and diced onions it's a large portion so you can definitely share it. The burger was thick and juicy they tasted like they were hand pressed they don't taste frozen they were cooked well slightly pink but I wish they were seasoned just a little bit more it was on the fresh side.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a good burger but not great. Atmosphere is sports bar with tv and sporting events being shown. The service was fine . Your order is taken at the counter and you wait on the pager signal to pick up your food. There are an assortment of various burger types with one or two patties and various toppings. I would try again with a different burger choice next time.

Alex S.

Yelp
These burgers are delicious!! Place is very clean from what I remember and the workers are very attentive. It's been a moment since I last went but I really want to go back.

Yelp
Food and service are excellent. Nice and quiet on a Friday afternoon. Cowboy Style Burger

Yelp
Fantastic Burger, Friendly service, quick food great experience.. the prices are on point.. check out the restroom it's kinda cool.. they have full service upstairs and walk up counter down stairs... Burger was delicious and fries were hot.. I can see why this is popular near UGA
google avatar

Yelp
Note: I feel like this place should receive a 3.5 stars, but you can't do that on Yelp! Parking is a small side lot on the right of the building or street parking on the left down the hill. Restaurant is situated in the heart of UGA and Dawg Country. Upon entering the rooftop was bumping as we came on game day, but the Dawgs were playing in Missouri. Rooftop is only for 21+, so we couldn't go up due to having the kids. You order at the counter and they give you a table number. We at first sat at the back patio, but it was cold and not a good vibe. So we moved inside and it was good to watch the game and stay warm. During COVID tables were taped off and not a lot of people in the dining room. We ordered: Double Grindhouse, the Euro and 2 Rugrats mini burgers with cheese, pickles, ketchup and mayo with drinks and fries. Drinks are self pour from the fountain. All the burgers were very good and well seasoned, but very small for the price. I don't think they grind or make their own patties in house as they didn't asked for cooking preference. The fries were well seasoned yet some parts seems over cooked, but 95% of the fries were cooked well. I will add cheese and the such next time for sure! We wanted milk shakes but they said the machine was down - kind of bummed about that. They place seems like a sit down / server situation based on the bar and feel but it more self service. I would come again, but hesitant due to small burgers patties and high price. Nice to be in Athens during game for a burger and a beer.

Yelp
Quick/great service and they werent kidding when they said the burgers were "killer"! Our favorite take-out place with great burgers, great service, and great prices!
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
The burgers are good, the service was friendly and helpful and the ambiance was good. Try the onion rings they are very good.

Kevin B.

Yelp
Waitress was super petty because I order a caramel milkshake and she misheard me thinking I said Cinnamon Toast Crunch shake. I told her I didn't order that but would take it. She asked me if I was sure I said caramel and when I said yes but I'd take this one she stormed off with the shake. Moments later she power walked by my table and dropped it off saying "here you go" and running back to the front. Luckily the food is always good.

Danny B.

Yelp
Rude service. Cashier girl was unfriendly, not sure why they have her working the front

Yelp
Fun, relaxing vibe. Staff is on point. Food is incredible. Must have: Cheese Poofs...delicious. Cowboy Style Burger is juicy packed with flavor. Grindhouse Killer Burgers is a automatic no one leaves hungry.
google avatar

Jenifer C.

Yelp
Went here on our recent trip to Athens. Burger was good. We also ordered the cheese poofs, which are large balls of pimento cheese with a sweet chili dipping sauce. I thought they would be like small pimento cheese nuggets based on the description. They were good, but would have been better as nuggets.
google avatar

Armando F.

Yelp
Burger was bland and unseasoned. Ambience was nice. Service was kinda slow they only have one place to order in the front.

Rachel C.

Yelp
Yum! Love this place especially sitting upstairs. The sweet potato fries are a must and burgers are super customizable based on any preference you may have.
google avatar

McKay S.

Yelp
If I could rate this place negatively, I definitely would. Upon entering to place a drink and a large Togo order upstairs, I was met with utter disrespect. Initially directed to "sit somewhere else" by a male staff member, I found a seat at an open bar table only to be blatantly ignored. To add insult to injury, the next customer who occupied the same seats I was in was promptly served. When I approached the bar and requested service from the female bartender, holding $50 cash and my credit card, her response was beyond rude. Upon explaining the situation, she callously dismissed me, stating she would also deny service for sitting there, despite it being a designated bar area with available seating. Absolutely unacceptable treatment.... They also do not accept cash.
google avatar

Yelp
We visited this location for dinner after moving our son into his apt at UGA on Sunday(8/14). They offer *regular fries, *sweet potato fries, and *brussel sprout fries. There in, lies the problem...they obviously cook all 3 varieties of fries in the SAME oil. Brussel sprouts have a very strong flavor and, when cooked together with regular potato fries or sweet potato fries, the strong brussel sprout flavor transfers over to the regular fries. If you eat their regular fries, or sweet potato fries, be prepared to have 'brussel sprout breath' & 'brussel sprout burps' for dayssss!! **to the manager..PLEASE have a designated fry basket & oil to fry the brussel sprouts in....AWAY from the regular potato fries!! Or even better, stop making brussel sprout fries all together! They smell like cabbage and they make your restaurant a little stinky
google avatar

Brigitta D.

Yelp
Oh.my.freaking.god! This place is seriously the BEST vegan burger I have EVER had!! The single patty veggie burger is soooo good I just wanna marry it. The sauteed mushrooms were just heaven like, the potato buns are like God's buns, and I could go on and on. The coffee vanilla shake...fuuuu, sis, if you ever thought you had a good one night stand, you ain't ever tried this before! This is ADDICTIVE
google avatar

Ang K.

Yelp
Love the burgers at Grindhouse. I've come here a few times and it's always super filling. I got a double patty today which got a little messy, but everything tasted great. Not sure if it's just me, but I definitely feel like I need a nap after eating here. I like to make my own burger, but they have some good signature burgers as well. I usually get the crinkle fries but they also have onion rings and appetizers like fried pickles. A lot of people ordered a milkshake so I'll have to try it next time. Staff seems nice and there's lots of seating.
google avatar

Angie J.

Yelp
Delicious food, so many choices, and friendly service with a smile. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jaslynn W.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was amazing! The staff was nice and they made sure that we had everything that we needed! I definitely recommend this place if you want a good burger.

Pete C.

Yelp
I left a very negative review of this place in 2021. I think that at that phase of the pandemic it was prohibitively difficult to find even enough people to staff a restaurant, let alone to do a good job of it. After my bad experience I gave them some months to regroup. Since then I have been back and usually quite satisfied. They really do make a nice burger -- several of their special burgers work for me and have a distinctive taste. I like the one with blue cheese the most. Their fries are still the weakest part of their game, but they are at least fine now (they were alarmingly chewy and white in 2021). If I do get a side, I usually get the frings and eat all of the onion rings and not all of the fries. My one issue with them these days is that their milkshake machine seems to be on the fritz between 1/3 and 1/2 the time in a totally random way. I guess it must require a lot of upkeep. I really do like their milkshakes! Anyway, Grindhouse: you got your act together, I forgive you and even more, I buy your food. Please keep up the good work.
google avatar

Chloe O.

Yelp
Came here with two friends and we all ordered cheeseburgers. Our beef patties were unevenly grilled and had a range of doneness. The fries were spectacular, very crisp with Cajun seasoning The other elements of my burger were done well, but even doneness is pretty important to me. Also, the long-haired man working at the register was pretty rude to me - I was just ordering a burger . I probably won't come here again, Athens had better burger spots to offer, in my opinion.

Jake L.

Yelp
I went upstairs a couple years ago and I had the worst customer experience ever. The waitresses talked about vulgar things, they wouldn't allow us to pay after our card was declined for unknown reasons. We politely waited like 15 minutes so that we could use another method, but our waitress wouldn't come. I raised my hand and the waitress noticed and rolled her eyes but didn't come. We then got up to leave went to pay downstairs. They stopped us halfway and said we have to pay upstairs. We ignored them went downstairs and paid. Horrible customer service.... But damn I can't lie that strawberry shake and burger might have been the best I've had... Would I go upstairs again? No... But would I come back and order downstairs despite my bad customer service experience? Yes!
google avatar

Nicholas K.

Yelp
Very good burgers and fries. I have the double cowboy burger and the Grindhouse burger both double. alcoholic shakes takes you by surprise. Upstairs is for 21+ and It comes with a server. Downstairs more like family style and they call your ticket to pick up your food. It has a 80s-90s college cafe vibe everyone is friendly and cool. Highly recommend if you want a great burger.
google avatar

Kalley H.

Yelp
Great burgers, great people, great place! The burgers are a little small in my opinion for the price but they are delicious. I use the "pocket points" app to get discounts on their food, so definitely use that if you're on a budget! On Monday's they have trivia and an upstairs seating/ full bar area if you are 21+ and looking to have a drink with burger! The fries are nice and crispy but could use some more salt. Their milkshakes are sooo good. Great place over all!
google avatar

Zac G.

Yelp
We stopped in to grab a quick bit and sat upstairs outside one a chilly but pretty day out. They had a special plastic mug you could buy and then reuse every other weekend of that fall for discounted beer which I thought was pretty cool. Food was pretty good and the staff was nice.
google avatar

Bryan L.

Yelp
Pricey for what you get. I haven't gone to the original location yet, so this is the first time I've tried this chain of mid price burgers. I ordered the double hillbilly burger and a side of crinkle cut fries. The bill totalled out to be around $11. The food came out pretty quick, my friend and I passed time watching the movies they put up on the walls and nearby TVs. The hillybilly burger was oily and heavy. It consisted of two small patties topped with caramelized onions, chili, pimento cheese, and one lonely jalapeno. There was not really any contrast in flavors, everything was savory and creamy with no crunch or bite. There was only one jalapeno in my burger, which did nothing to improve the flavor. The original grindhouse burger was your basic hamburger, american cheese, veggies, and a 'special' ketchup mayo based sauce. It tasted pretty flavorful, the sauce wasn't too strong and the cheese melted nicely over the burger. The caramelized onions and pickles were a good addition. The fries on the other hand were okay, it was soft and lacked the crispiness I wanted. I liked how the ridges were smaller and closer together, grabbed condiments a lot better than other fries I've eaten. In conclusion the food was okay, but too expensive for the small amount I was getting. I recommend getting the double instead of the junior if you want to leave satisfied. I'll pass on eating here again, but I'd definitely want to try the Atlanta locations.

Yelp
Enjoyed a good hamburger here one Saturday afternoon. You can build your own burger or pick from their list of hamburgers already built. We got the euro style and the Grindhouse burger. You can get a single or double patty option. We got the single which was plenty for us. We split an order of fries which can feed two people. The burgers were good and the fries a crunchy crinkle cut. You order as you go in and they bring your order. A good lunch experience.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Recently tried this place because we were really craving a good burger. Let me tell you, this place is phenomenal, and this is quite honestly the best turkey burger I've ever had. We went upstairs for full service and the waitress was very nice and quick. Upstairs is a little quieter on busy days but still has multiple TVs and a bar which we love. Went back again the next week and will continue to be our favorite burger spot.
google avatar

Blake A.

Yelp
Soooo delicious. I've taken a few guests to Grindhouse and it's always been great. Today I had the Dixie burger double w/out the bun and it was phenomenal. They brought it out in a bowl with real silverware. The guy with long hair who runs the front counter has always been nice and helpful.

Darryl C.

Yelp
Unseasoned meat patty's on the burger and fries that disgusting it tasted like grease . The chili was not so bad but it was too spicy. The brussels sprouts had too much hoisin sauce It seems like somebody trying very hard, but could not execute. I think, starting at the burger Pattie's what really matters.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
The burgers are AMAZING and the server we had - Joe - is equally as amazing!! Thank you for making our time here so special!! I definitely recommend getting blue cheese on your fries here, it's so dang good! 10/10 will come again!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
I read where this place was on a top 50 list for burgers in the US. I had to try. I had a double Apache burger. Really good. Also had some sweet potato chips on the side. I like how they had blue cheese dip for them. Nice touch.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Food is decent, but I'm not in a hurry to come back to this location. This place could not keep up with the crowd. There's a very small distance (maybe 6 feet) between the front door and the order counter, which meant that the other six customers had to stand outside to wait on ordering. To confound things, the employee taking orders was very slow, so the line didn't move much. Minus one star. The men's bathroom was disgusting -- lightbulbs burned out, no soap in dispenser, and the floor was a lake. Minus one star. Lastly, the portion sizes were tiny. Double burger costing $10 left me hungry. My family spent $80, and _should_ have eaten like kings. But not so. Minus one star. Now the good. My Dixie burger was delicious. And the atmosphere was very fun. Plus two stars for that. In summary -- two stars. Just eh.

baylee m.

Yelp
Rude lady when she sat us and brought out our food. Waitress was sweet though. I'm disappointed with her attitude towards my friends and I.
google avatar

Olivia D.

Yelp
I love Grindhouse soooo much! After every big event throughout high school, we always ate dinner at Grindhouse. The bad thing is just the parking situation. However, when EVERYONE and their momma is trying to eat here, it's not a surprise when there's a line out the door and parking is impossible. However, I avoid the lines (and leaving the house during the pandemic) by ordering from UberEats (probably more than I should). As someone with dietary restrictions, I appreciate the labeling of all the allergens (milk, gluten, etc).
google avatar

Yelp
A GREAT LOCATION! This place is amazing if you are heading to Athens, this is not your average food place, I went for A Georgia game one time for lunch, and my mind was BLOWN! I got me a bacon cheeseburger and it did not disappoint, customer service was beyond nice, It is busy but you get your food quick and easy. Clean restrooms, quality food, great place.

Yelp
A must have meal every time I visit my daughter at UGA the best burger in Athens hands sown.

Yelp
Great place for a burger and fries! Food was terrific. Just get there early, parking lot was packed when we left. Worth the visit.

Yelp
A great place to enjoy big, juicy burgers, cooked perfectly, dining inside or outside on the patio, with your friends. Food: 5/5 for burgers and regular or sweet potato fries (or onion rings) I really like the various ways the menu offers up their tasty ground beef sandwiches. We have tried all of them from the Cowboy to the Yankee. ( They will serve the same meals without the buns of you prefer the low carb version.) Drinks specials change regularly. Restaurant : 5/5. Large roomy area inside, casual with picnic table furnishings. Small patio area outside on the first floor, and a large dining area on the second floor, too. Generally clean. TVs show old movies and anime cartoons. Location: 4/5 Conveniently located near the UGa campus but it has limited parking-we usually end up parking on a nearby street. A recent renovation to their parking area now allows a back exit to street parking. Dogs welcome on the patio. Service: 5/5 Order at the counter and servers deliver your good to your table. Servers have been consistently friendly and efficient. On multiple visits we have never been disappointed. It's a crowd favorite! Additional positives: Saving money -The restaurant has coupons in local coupon books that are sold to earn money for charities and in addition it participates in the "Belly" rewards program with free food after accumulating points on several visits.

Yelp
The best word I can think of is: "Meh." If I pay over $11 for lunch I expect a bit more that what tasted like a McDonald's $1 bacon burger. It was small, greasy and lacked flavor. I asked the girl to recommend something that would impress me and she listed the Cowboy burger as a good option. Needless to say, it wasn't a good option. Maybe I missed the memo that the food is supposed to be really greasy and over priced but I was in the mood for a good burger and Yelp offered 7% cash back, so I went. It had a good atmosphere and seemed like a cool place to hang out if you like alcohol, but I don't drink so maybe that was also my problem. If I was the owner of this place I would figure out a way to improve the quality of my burgers so non-alcohol drinking people would want to come back. I gave it two stars because the service was decent and they didn't forget the ketchup and napkins in my to-go bag.
