0 customer service. The prices they charge versus what you have to deal with in this place is not worth it. There are plenty of other grocery stores in the area that are friendlier and more helpful don't waste your time or money here.

I’ve lived near 2 Gristedes for over 5 years. Every single item in the store can be found for 20-50% less at other grocery stores. Avoid at all costs; this place is a ripoff. Duane reade is across the street, Whole Foods and target are close by. Much better prices there. Seen pictured: $18 detergent, $11 cereal, and $4 (each) rotten looking avocados

nasty nasty place. staff is a piece of work when is comes to customersof a certain ethnic background. Doesn't matter if you pay and are polite. Will hassle you regardless. If you're management, and are reading this, take a hard, hard look at yourself in the mirror. You're the epitome of why the world we live in continues to be sad.

Please mark your items correctly. Prices are constantly wrong when you get to the register and generally will be more. Also you are clearly price gouging. Eggs are 3 dollars at Trader Joe’s and cheaper at Whole Foods. 9 dollars for eggs is absolutely insane. Just go to Whole Foods as it’s the “cheaper” option and better quality. And prices are correct.

So expensive for low quality items. I got a bag of shredded cheese that was literally moldy and they wouldn’t let me return it. You can find far better prices and quality elsewhere.

They have the basics for a grocery store in Manhattan. It was clean and staff was ok.

Decent with some items Outrageous overpriced with others: example - 2 liter caffeine free diet pepsi - when they have stock: $4.29!!!! The highest price I have seen anywhere!

Management and staff great but this store is way too overpriced. Kassamatidis should be ashamed he is charging these prices when anything here can be found at least 30 percent off elsewhere.

Came here to say 2 things, maybe 3. I love the staff here, they're super courteous and kind and all deserve raises. It is overpriced but it's Manhattan. Certain items though aren't that bad and they have a pretty large selection. If anything I say is brought back to management PLEASE LET IT BE THIS: whoever is pre-seasoning your "fresh cajun catfish fillets" has absolutely no idea what they're doing and I mean this with no disrespect at all. Not sure what cajun means to y'all but it definitely does not include curry or masala or whatever the hell else was put on that fish. Slap ya mama and Tony Cacheres exist for a reason, along with other herbs and spices that actually fit the Cajun profile. I almost lost all the contents of my stomach after frying them up, the smell was so strong and did not pair with my Louisiana cajun batter AT ALL. Please fix it, please. Or just take it off the roster.

Best grocery spot found in midtown to date. I travel to NYC for medical reasons and we stock up our hotel mini fridge with breakfast goods and snacks. Prices weren't awful but selection is amazing!

I went to buy some groceries from that place. It was recently remodeled and looks nice and very clean. However, I believe that They should do couple of updates about their employees too. I like Gristede's and comparing with others, it cheaper. I was buying something and I could not find pricing for the item that I was going to buy. I went to register for checking out for price but attitude of the cashier was not nice. It was like he doesn't want to work. All in all it was okay. Hopefully they could be much better soon.

The last time I was in this Gristede's, it was before it had been renovated. It looked rather rundown then, but now the place looks much more like a modern supermarket. Bright lighting, clean floors, organized shelves and nice, fresh looking products are found everywhere in this store. Of course, being a Manhattan supermarket with limited space, the various sections of the store are smaller than say, a gigantic Shop Rite in the suburbs, but they have all the basics you need to get your shopping done. Even better? The prices are actually quite reasonable for a Manhattan supermarket. I went in expecting everything to be marked up 10-20% beyond what I would normally pay in New Jersey but many of the prices were comparable. The salad mix and the fruit I purchased were super fresh, as was the chicken I picked up to cook for dinner. I was very happy with the quality of what I purchased. I don't normally do food shopping like this in Manhattan, but as a place to visit while you're on the run? This Gristede's is cool in my book.

Ok, there's not much I can say about this place. There's a host of other options around the area. Including right across the street! There's very little that's offered here I would need that I can't get the same or better elsewhere. How is it still in business is a miracle to me, but perhaps it's owned by the same people? I think I bought some cake mix and some holiday cards from here.

I'm from Chicago and even in the most pretentious parts of the city don't charge this much for food. I've been to other "markets" in NYC, and these prices are just outrageous. One of the most egregious overpricing was the bottles of water, with 1.5L at $8.49! It was actually less expensive for me to buy the water from my hotel lobby... just imagine that! The produce looked fresh and I saw some cut up fruit that looked good, but it was $9.00 for a small cup. Bottom line, if you're a visitor to the city, check your hotel prices before you stop here... you could save several dollars. I gave two stars because there is a pretty good selection of options for a small convenience store and the food looked good. The store was clean and modern and the employees were nice.

After coming here a few times, i've got a couple things to say. While the prices are expensive (way more expensive than usual) it's not really anyone's fault except corporate and inflation. The staff seems friendly for the most part however, the manager who is a woman comes off hostile. She is very passive aggressive but at the same time, I think she cares about her workers. She is very loud and every time I am in the store I can hear her yelling. The cashiers are friendly, some more than others. Sometimes I see the staff being overworked. There are mostly teenagers working here and I see that the manager has them standing on milk crates with dents to stock shelves. Definitely not safe. Lack of care on these young adults. Seen manager screaming at this one kid, very rude. But then again, she can be likeable as she's friendly to customers. There is a white man who works who looks to be security of some sort and he's definitely a racist. He profiles people of color and follows them around the store, myself included. He pretends to be busy and looking at stuff but he makes it quite obvious. People are the deli are friendly. Customer service is friendly. Had lovely conversations with a few workers, young boy with a beard and short hair, woman at customer service section with long hair, older lady with spanish accent at the front, young short girl with glasses, and a woman with cornrows. They are always friendly. The food is not that good though, the potato salad is absurd and the sandwiches are not worth the price! Might as well go to subways.

I finally found my favorite chocolate chip cookies as it is become more and more difficult to locate. This supermarket carries brands that standard local supermarkets do not which is a positive. Very narrow aisles to navigate with shopping carts and children running amok with the added confusing layouts as I wander through the aisles attempting to locate cookies. I was at first discourage to exit but I was frustrated leading to ask for directions from a store associate. Gristede's also offer some pharmaceutical items which I was able to attain antibiotic ointment. Slightly pricey. It is accessible nearby A train at 59th Street Columbus Circle and Ninth Avenue.

I shopped here once when I was in a hurry and agree that Gristedes is overpriced compared to any other grocery store in the area. My 13oz box of basic cereal ($2.49 elsewhere) was $6.49 at Gristedes. I'll continue to shop elsewhere. I also want to amplify what others have said: a lot of prices are not even marked in Gristedes, and for the ones that are, Gristedes will often ring items up at a higher price than marked. If you buy something here, pay attention at checkout and check the prices as they ring you up. They should correct the mistake. Extra bonus reason not to shop here: the woman at the checkout, J., is rude and unprofessional. She won't acknowledge you the entire time you're there. After she checked me out, she turned her back to me so she could get back to texting on her phone below the counter. Just shop elsewhere.

I came to Gristede's the other day to get some essential grocery items during the COVID19 pandemic. The place was fairly empty and clean. It's much much much cleaner than other Gristede's locations I've been to so if money is no issue and you just want a cleaner store - this did the trick for me. Was a block of cheese $3 more expensive than Whole Foods or Trader Joes? Sure was. Was a simple box of crackers that goes for $3 at Target, $6 here? You betcha. Again - the price inflation is beyond offensive here. Don't come here for for a lot of things, you're throwing money away. Come here if you realize you need a few things and don't feel like waiting on line at other stores. I'm a fan of their salmon, it usually looks decent and it tastes pretty good. I bought some sweet potatoes when I was here, random stuff. V EXPENSIVE, but no lines.

Luckily, I rarely cook so don't have much need for an establishment of this ilk, but if I do have a grocery need, this place is convenient and quick, if not all encompassing. Here's why I gave it three stars: As far as NYC supermarkets go, I've seen worse. But this one does have its problems...narrow aisles, confusing layouts, limited selection. Naturally , you can't tell the price of anything because stuff is sort of all over. However, I do have to say the few times I've been here, the checkout moved pretty quickly. What really bumps this up a star is two things: 1) They have Quaker Banana Bread Weight Control instant oatmeal which I love and have never been able to find in a box by itself previously; and 2) The gentleman cashier who works there is super friendly and service oriented.

What can I say.. Gristedes is wildly expensive and usually I shop at Traders Joe or whole foods. I only came here for a few things as this store is right around the corner from my house, but today they put the icing on the cake. I can't shop here while being a Latina, they followed me relentlessly. They lost my business. Meanwhile all of their workers are latinos or black, shame on them!

This is the closest supermarket to my job that's not a Whole Foods (don't get me wrong, I love me form Whole Foods - but sometimes you don't need $20 brie, you just need simple deli American, lol). Came here awhile back to pick up orange juice for someone and was kind of annoyed by their OJ selection. It's either $7-9 dollars for an unnecessarily large container (for someone who lives alone...I get if it's for families, but yeah...) or $4-6 for a bottle not big enough to warrant that. Very few actual orange juice options in between here, especially of the Tropicana variety so I just went with "Orangeade". Had real juice in it so I was sold. The deli here is pretty pleasant. I've bought cheese here...lol. Seriously only came here for Orange Juice and cheese because that's how I aid people with fevers...but I love how the deli area seriously smells like cake. Also, prices are super reasonable for cheese, meats, etc. In all it's a well organized and stocked regular city supermarket. Not awful and also not out of this world. Serves its purpose and serves it well.

This place is absurdly expensive and I'm surprised they are still able to stay in business. Like everyone else says, only plus is there's never a line because no one comes here.

I was racially profiled and followed throughout the store. Wildly expensive and while in the store my friends and I realized we were being followed by one of the workers who looked like a manager rather than a floor worker. It should be noted this worker was white. While following us every time we saw him he looked like he was trying to make himself look busy when in reality he was doing nothing and changing isles at the same time as us. I'd like to mention that we are a group of BIPOC so we quickly realized we were being profiled. When on the way out I overheard the conversation of the man, the one that was following us, and a cashier and I was able to confirm that he was following us as he said he was worried about "us two." We had done nothing to indicate that we were going to steal and its honestly disappointing that people are still treating people like this on the basis of skin color. I don't appreciate a store that is going to racially profile its customers because they aren't their usual demographic. We proceeded to spend over $60+ dollars at the store which we contemplated getting a refund for when I made my friends aware of what was done to us. Please do not racially profile people. I don't think I have to say its bad for business and no one wants to shop at a racist establishment.

Probably the most over priced grocery market in the area. They made the place look a lot better but the mark ups are huge. Chobani yogurt is $2.29 vs $.99 at Whole Foods or $1.39-1.99 across the street at Westerly. Hummus is 4.99 vs 3.99 across the street. This racks up huge. Go somewhere else because this place is a rip off

For a Friday before Memorial Day weekend this store is not busy at all. They had only two registers open. I went straight to the city right after work so i didn't get a chance to eat anything so while i was walking to pick up my shirt and bib for next weekend, i decided to get something to eat. At first i was going to get a sandwich but then i said maybe a salad. I didn't know that the produce section was that small but i did see salads. for $5.00 it's not bad but it didn't have any salad dressing with it.

Way overpriced rip off market. Better off ordering online. Avoid. Only plus is no lines cuz everyone avoids this place.

This is for customer service. Every time I walk in, employees are smiling, willing to help, and treat you with kindness and respect. Convenient place for a quick grocery trip.

Go to spot during covid. Pros: Never a line or many people when I go. Stocked with a variety of options. Dr. Brown 6 pack for the low Clean Cons: Only issue is that some items are over priced 4.5 stars

More like 2.5 stars. I really like the employees, who have been very cheerful and friendly during the COVID craziness. I also like the deli counter - good selection and prices are reasonable. HOWEVER - most of the groceries here are INSANELY overpriced. Avoid if possible.

SHE NEEDS SOCIAL SKILL LESSONS!!! Gristedes, you need to go undercover and check out your employees!

I went here for lunch. I wanted a sandwich roll ended up walking out the clerk acted as if she was doing a favor. I gave it another try couple days later, with the thought maybe it was a bad day for "her" or maybe I would get a different clerk. Same experience.

I live at 300 W. 55th St. in Manhattan, across the street from your Store 034 (55th St and 8th Ave). Today, Sunday October 4, 2020, at approximately 3:45pm I was shopping when a member of your staff (older white man) stopped an African American shopper by shouting "give me the beer." The staff member shouted loud enough that it drew my attention from several aisles away. When I went to see if everything was ok, the staff member made the shopper lift his shirt and pat down his legs. The shopper clearly did not have any products on him and we completely cooperative. The staff member continued to shout saying "I'm going to swing, I'm going to swing." Let me be clear, this was a total invasion of privacy and a blatant threat of violence. The staff member continued to shout "it's my job to be harassing, I'm going to hurt you" as the the shopper left. If in doubt, check your cameras. I should hope that you are just as appalled as I am. When I checked out at register 1, the staff member ringing my order (older, shorter woman with black hair) threw the hand basket across the room. Unnecessary, unprofessional, and completely inappropriate. Your store, and its employees, are completely out of control. I mentioned where I live because there are far too many options in this neighborhood (Whole Foods, Westerly Natural Market, Amish Market, Food Emporium) for anyone to tolerate this blatant disrespect and unprofessionalism. This store's staff act as if they are doing the customer a favor by doing their job with courtesy and respect. If it wasn't obvious, I will no longer shop at any Gristedes. Further, I cannot stand behind such behavior and will be sharing this on all social media outlets and my building's email list so that anyone of conscious or that expect professionalism will also not spend their money at Gristedes. Disappointed that your company would think anyone would tolerate such behavior.

Just ordered 3 round cakes ! a review is not even needed - just look at the picture of the cake that they allowed to go to a paying customer. A picture speaks a thousand words. they simply don't care about customer service here. Looks like a 6 yr old scribbled on the cake in the dark. How I can put that out to my company for a corporate event, I don't even know. Pathetic.

It's OK. They do have organic produce and sometimes have specials. They have some specialty foods that I can only find here. Service is OK. Nothing super nice but not horrible. I come every now and then when I need something and they have organic produce on sale. Next door is Westerly and they never have organic berries on sale. Gristede's occasionally does. Overall, good when you just need to pick up a few things or need something special!

Just took a bite of my pasta & broccoli salad and pulled back from my teeth the longest brunette hair... it was like a scene from that movie "Rings"... no thanks

Yikes, this is a place to skip. On this trip in I decided I need to change my routine, which was either Whole Foods, Morton Williams on 57th. The Food Emporium which is pricey, or Westerly's also pricey but so worth it. I thought, let's give this place a try. Guess what, regular places become regular places, for a reason. They're reliable priced at an acceptable level, have a respectable amount of choices, and are clean. Gristedes, while not terrible just didn't hit the mark in any of the categories. Remember, you are what you eat. Isn't it worth spending just a little more to get something so much better. You really need to skip this place until they get there act back together, they say they've been around since 1888 or something like that, I believe them, and they need to do a rehab.

Seriously, the worst store ever. I avoid when ever I go on lunch breaks for work However today, it was the only option- I bought a bag of rice cakes- yes one thing it took 10 min to even pay, the cashier then forgot to give my cash and only gave change i went BACK two seconds later and asked about the cash- the cashier was confused, had no idea what to do then her manager decided to RECOUNT THE WHOLE REGISTER! THE WHOLE REGISTER??? Yes, it took so long i told them to keep the change and left seriously.

From the outside, this location shows promise. But then you head through the doors and your hopes get crushed. The aisles are poorly laid out, the lines are horribly long, and the selection of food is actually not nearly as good as other Gristede's locations. The icing on the cake was the attitude from the staff. Not downright rude, but with enough attitude of "I could give a EFF..." to make you want to punch someone in the face. Oh well. So instead of doing any face-punching, I'll simply shop elsewhere.

This place is a joke. I bought a bottle of Coca Cola here today and realized that the bottle has been opened already. Don't know why anyone would do that but it's gross and disturbing. Also based on the look of the place you would assume stuff is cheaper here but no that bottle of Coca Cola cost $2.44 before tax. Stay away.

Absolutely horrible service. I called the store in advance to ask if they had Red Velvet cake I can pick up for my friend's birthday party. They said yes. I came that evening to pick it up. The cake was behind a glass counter in the bakery/deli section. I asked the staff if anyone can give me the cake. The staff told me that the deli staff had left and the deli was closed so no one could sell me the cake. Incredibly no one was willing to go behind the glass counter, put the cake in a box and sell it to me. The store was empty and there were about 3 staff members hanging out by the cashier's booth, all of whom refused to provide me this simple service. Apparently Gristedes does not care for my business. I will do my shopping elsewhere in the future.

This one just isn't the best. I've actually quite surprised that the Gristede's in my Washington Heights 'hood is far more cleanly and offers better overall customer service than this Midtown West location where people are paying far more for real estate and quality surrounding establishments. I mean, they have fresh items. They're stocked well. But one time I mistook an employ for a vagrant! That shouldn't be an image one sees in a Gristede's! The store is also on the not so cleanly side (the floor, the carts, dust on the shelves, etc). The cash register areas is super cramped and the cashiers aren't all that efficient. And some prices are bumped up for Midtown rate. Hike 5 blocks up and hit the awesome Whole Foods. More bang for your buck in every aspect.

I've learned from this store that "Gristedes" mean nasty and overpriced in Greek. The place is dirty (spills are not cleaned up so quickly), it's ugly, and the prices are as high as Whole Foods, yet the quality generally is junk; the deli counter is frightful. They're frequently out of stock of basics--e.g., dijon mustard, ketchup, spaghetti. I'm not exaggerating: on more than one occasion, the store had NO spaghetti in stock. To top things off, the cashiers are rude--they don't even acknowledge your existence--and unprofessional. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. I would love to see this place go out of business so we could get a decent grocery in the neighborhood (Westerly Market is great but limited in what it carries).

Corner grocery store with a deli and bakery section. Overall good prices. Could use a renovation inside looks run down. Staff are nice.

Expired Food on Shelves Multiple Times: I have bought food twice now, brought it home and realized it was expired. I'm not talking milk that expired two days ago, I'm talking about can goods and bottled salad dressings that expired six months prior. Who thinks to check that stuff as a consumer? I would NEVER purchase anything from their deli esp if the turnover on the can goods is that bad.

If this Gristede's wasn't across the street of my apartment, I would never set foot inside of it. The lighting feels dim, the aisles are a bit cramped and it just feels a bit dingy in here. I won't buy anything here that isn't sealed (although I will sometimes take a risk and buy eggs). The produce here looks sad, like it has definitely seen better days. The prices aren't that cheap either, so I buy my produce at Whole Foods instead. They do have a lot of basic staples here and are open 24 hours. So if you need something desperately in the middle of the night, this is your spot. Otherwise, I'd wait until other stores are open in the morning.

We pop in here every time we visit NY as they sell an alluring green jelly which we cannot get here in London and my parents absolutely love it (no, I've no idea why either). Thank god we've never been stopped at customs on the way back into the UK. The jelly police would have a field day.

I've been going there for years, as it is conveniently located near a theatre I worked at every so often. I always get the same thing, a Swiss cheese sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes and a tad of mustard. First of all it is meant to be a convenient store and that's all it is. Though there's nothing convenient about waiting ten minutes for your sandwich to be made. I often wonder if the employees speak English, as they barely talk to you, apart from making repeat your order three times. By the time you get somebody's motivated enough to make your order, and by the time they have put on a pair of gloves, you're better off buying a salad at the westerly market next door. The managers are very rude and cold, and act as if they owned the place ( maybe they do...). A little politeness and better service would go a long way. Prices are high and I'm not sure where people go shopping in the neighborhood but not there.

Absolutely disappointed in this location. The general layout of Gristedes is the same at different locations, but this store has particularly narrow aisles and poor service. The store also has a sort of "dark" feeling to it? It might be because the store overall is rather small and it seems like they've attempted to pack this small store with the same volume of products as they do their larger locations. I came here once and hope I won't have to again.

Aside from convenience there's not much else to say about Gristede's - the overall store needs an update. Like everyone else mentioned - most of the items here are overpriced with not much variety. It does have most of what you'll need (meat, cheese, small produce section, snacks, pasta, etc) but again overpriced. It's a good place to grab a sports drink / snack for convenience - prices for these are on par with other drugstores and grocery stores. Tip: There's a Citibank ATM here if you need cash

So dirty. So expensive. Yet so convenient. Save yourself the trouble and order from Peapod.com. Really. However, I get my produce from Stiles market on 52nd St. Skip Gristedes all together.

Like others said ... Dirty, dingy, high prices, limited selection and some poor quality items. Bought some fresh dairy items only to find them go bad within a few days. Disappointing.

They make great sandwiches here, if someone feels like actually making them.... I went there at 1:30pm (prime lunch time) and the deli was completely empty, asked the guy at customer service if someone could make me a sandwich...5 whole minutes later someone slowly ambled over looking very grumpy. Really not that much to ask that the deli attendant actually stay at the deli around lunch time, especially considering us working actors at the nearby Shetler Studios have short breaks to feed ourselves. Had to settle for a pre-made sandwich, it was subpar and overpriced. I wouldn't have minded if the deli clerk actually talked to me when I complained, but he just kind of stares at my and rang me up. So, customer service is poor. Needless to say I won't be going back.

Easily the worst grocery store in the neighborhood. If you can avoid going here, you should. Customer service is deplorable, everyone that works there is incredibly rude and unprofessional. They will advertise sales and then when you go to check out the sales price is non-existent. I leave there annoyed every time I go and only continue to go since its directly across the street from my building. Grocery shoppers beware: stay away!

I think this store gets a 1.5 but decided to round down. The only thing I like about it is that its convenient to my apartment. But that doesn't necessarily help you, fellow Yelper. I don't get the sense that their management is the type that would read Yelp reviews. This kind of store is a dying breed in Manhattan. With the increasingly competitive prices on essentials at Whole Foods, the freshness and selection of places like West Side Market, and the uber-fabulousness of the new Trader Joe's on Sixth Ave, there is really no reason to shop here. I wouldn't trust any of the "fresh" foods or deli products. But if you need a bottle of ketchup on your way to a picnic, I guess you can't go wrong.

If you live in the neighborhood, it's a decent option for last-minute basics. There's not a huge selection, but they stock fresh produce, dairy, pantry, juice/beverages, etc. There's a small deli which I've never tried, and they have some prepared foods. It's very unorganized and hard to tell the price of things. Prices are pretty high, so I wouldn't do my weekly shopping here. You'll get better prices and quality at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. But it's a convenient spot to grab an item or two.

It is def dirty, but super convenient for me. my biggest problem with this gristedes is the lack of effort that the employees put forth toward the store.

I do not know what people want. This store is just fine. People these days want all the bells and whistles. I go in there and get what I need. If I cant find it I ask and they either tell me where to find it or go out of their way and show me where it is. I do not know what people want. Does everyone have to be on stage. And it is not so dark and yes the ailes are kind of small. Look, I do not live near the store I work in the area. So maybe it is different for those who live nearby and shop for their homes. I just find this store to be very good.
