Yes, it's true. Gristedes is pretty much the only game in town when it comes to grocery stores. There is actually another one a few blocks south near W. Thames Street, but that one's even worse than this one (it's so much more cramped and confusing to navigate).
A long, long time ago, Gristedes used to be Red Apple. I thought that was a much more inviting name, but it was basically the same store. After the switch to Gristedes, they eventually renovated. The deli counter used to be in the back, kinda shuttered away so you'd forget the store even had one. I like that the deli counter is now up front, right across from the selection of fancy cheeses, packaged deli meats and pastas. I don't think it smells bad when you walk in, and the deli people are pretty friendly. I used to order sliced turkey from them when they had Boar's Head, but now they have Dietz & Watson and I don't like it as much.
I generally like the people who work here. There's one cashier who will strike up a conversation if you're buying something fun like a new Ben&Jerry's flavor, and then she'll ask you how good it is. The manager also does his best to stay on top of things and he's approachable and willing to help.
They have a surprisingly good selection of random "gourmet" type items like imported olives in a jar, but then they won't have something simple like Goya rice products. They have a good ice cream selection though, and usually have good "2 for" sales (2 for $5, 2 for $6, etc.) of Ben & Jerry's or Haagen Daaz. Usually that's the best deal you can get out of Gristedes, otherwise it's fairly overpriced. But like I said, they're the only game in town so their prices don't really have to be competitive.
Well, that's not entirely true. Their biggest competition is probably FreshDirect. At any given time, there is a FreshDirect truck in my neighborhood. I had been relying on Gristedes, trips to Chinatown and the occasional trek out to BJ's for grocery needs, but I finally made the switch to FD a few months ago. Why? Because on two occasions, we had accidentally bought bread that holes in the bag. Holes, what holes? Holes from RODENTS that had chewed through the bag to get to the bread. And the bread had big ol' chunks of it missing. EW. GROSS. And then my mind flashbacked to the time I saw a HUGE cockroach hanging out in the produce section, right by the bagged lettuce. DOUBLE GROSS. So that was kinda the last straw.
I'll still go here if I'm missing an item that I need right away. And it's open until midnight, which is good (years ago, it would close at 10pm so you'd have to go to the deli, which is sometimes even more overpriced). But for the bulk of my grocery shopping needs, I go with FreshDirect now.
