Where to Eat and Drink in Copenhagen

"Hidden atop a former auto auction house, this rooftop greenhouse restaurant is part of Denmark’s first rooftop farm and is reached by a circular iron staircase into an intimate communal dining space. Rows of vegetables, herbs, and flowers supply a fixed, hyper-local menu that often includes fish from nearby waters and produce picked the same day, reflecting strong ties to zero-waste kitchen practices and seasonal, on-site growing." - Lauren Mowery

10 Best Street Food Spots in Copenhagen

"Gro proves that street food doesn’t have to be a gut-buster. For years, its cold-pressed juices have been distributed through Copenhagen cafes, but now it has its own kale-green, succulent-clad food truck at Reffen, where you can order healthy breakfast bowls and fresh juices. Whether you’re recovering from a long night or prepping for an ambitious day ahead, this healthy power food—which makes the perfect on-the-go breakfast—is bound to do the trick." - Jenna Scatena

A wonderful unique experience. If you love to dine out and love different and unique experiences this is for you. Climb up a spiral staircase (or elevator if you chose) to a rooftop filled with flowers, vegetables and herbs. Have a nice glass of champagne or wine while waiting to be seated. You will be invited into a cozy greenhouse where a beautifully set community table is waiting. Your seat is assigned with a pretty metal place card. The table seats about 20 people so place note you will set next to people you do not know. Really enjoyable. I sat next to someone who was from a town 15 minutes from me in NY. The menu was posted on a chalk board and each and every course was created with love, creatively and flavor! They accommodated me with a vegetarian menu but similar to what everyone else ate. It was a beautiful summer’s evening in Denmark. If you enjoy a farm to table experience- this is for you. The bread was outstanding and the buttermilk ice cream. Oh my. All of it - delicious. My husband loved the fish and beef. 🙂

This sort of restaurant is why some people have a prejudice against organic/local food. The most expensive meal we had in Coepnhagen, and definitely the WORST. Food is passable at best, the wine a travesty, service warm but unprofessional. Atmosphere is alright but the price is simply ridiculous. Steer clear unless you have money and time to waste. Service: Despite the reservation being for 8:30, we weren't seated at the table til 9. The staff took drink orders, but there are only a few seats available outside, so many had to stand awkwardly for 30+ minutes. Why not just let people sit at the table? Also, one of our dishes arrived without a carrot and had to be sent back for it. Food and wine: The dishes are discordant. The flavours are unsophisticated and don't mesh together. It feels like they threw together whatever they had at hand without any consideration. The first two courses were okay, if a bit small-portioned. The goat's cheese was too heavy, and the fish (which was the main course) came with a very strong sweet wine sauce that completely overpowered the delicate white fish. The dessert was the worst. How do you manage to mess up dessert? The less said about the wine, the better. One, they don't change glasses. Second, they give you very little. Two sips at most. Third, the wine is generally weak and watery and does not pair well with the dishes. Especially courses 3 to 5. I liked the concept, hence the reservation. But the execution is hideous and the price a travesty.

Had dinner here last night. What a wonderful experience overall. Very smart and intuitive pairings of different flavors and techniques. I loved the kombuchas, all very flavorful and delightful. Loved the communal table where guests talk away the night as they wait for the next course to be served. The atmosphere was cozy and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming and were visibly passionate about what they do here with the farm their community and this restaurant. Kudos to them. Much appreciation for sharing this experience.

Beautiful venue, and such a unique dining experience! 🙌 We had the lunch menu, and you'll be sat with a small group of people which gives it an intimate and exclusive feel. The host was absolutely lovely, so kind and helpful! The venue is atmospheric, and I loved hearing about the concept behind the menu and how they work, where the food comes from etc. For something a bit different on your trip to Copenhagen, I would definitely recommend this!

What a disappointment. Lets start with the positive, the location is unique and the rooftop garden has lots of atmosphere. The table setzing is very basic with uncomfortable chairs, no distance to the neighbour and very cold. The service is putting plates on the table but not asking for drinks or about the food, there was no professional service. But what really disappoints is tbe food: tasteless, cold, not appealing plus mini portions! In a city with so many high quality restaurants this place can not compete

This was such a special experience, sitting in a greenhouse together with others like we‘re a big family enjoying exquisite food. We had the 5 course dinner along with some wine. The wines matched perfectly and each course was just special and delicious. I can only recommend this to everyone.

Gro Spiseri is truly one of the most unique dining experiences I’ve had in Copenhagen. Located on the rooftop of a building, the setting is absolutely stunning — a green oasis above the city, complete with herb and vegetable gardens, and even a small area for rabbits and chickens. It feels more like a charming urban farm than a typical restaurant. The food reflects this commitment to sustainability and freshness: everything comes from local farms, and you can really taste the quality in every bite. Each dish was beautifully prepared, flavorful, and full of character. The atmosphere is relaxed but thoughtful, with a strong connection to nature and community. If you're looking for something special, off the beaten path, and truly local – Gro Spiseri is definitely worth a visit. A perfect combination of great food, sustainability, and a one-of-a-kind location.

We had their lunch menu at it was really nice. Started off with pasta in a mushroom broth which had this really really flavorful filling that blew us away. I had no idea what the filling consisted of but I know for sure that it was top class. Maybe my favorite of the entire menu. Then we had a serving of their homemade focaccia and whipped butter, also super good! I always appreciate great baked goods and I must say the quality here was top notch. The main course was the most underwhelming. It was fish, served with a hollandaise-esque sauce which they called fish demi glace. The fish was cooked absolutely perfectly, not doubt about it, but the sauce was not to my liking. Flavors were nice, but honestly I thought it was way too thick. As if they had cooked it at a too high temperature or whipped it too much. It tasted like a subpar hollandaise which didn’t fit the quality of the rest of the dishes. It was accompanied by a rather basic beetroot salad. Nothing wrong with it, but again didn’t fit the quality and it felt rather plain. We were told it was to cut the fattyness of the fish and sauce, but I believe other sides would have accomplished this better. For dessert we had a flan, with a bit of licorice powder, candied sunflower seeds and cream I believe. Really really tasty, didn’t blow you away either but definitely delicious. All in all, I would say price to quality ratio is OK. From the starter you have very high expectations, and then the quality dips just a bit. I would come back however! I will try an evening tasting menu too. I thought it was good, and definitely deserves a second try. I don’t know if I am a fan of the social dining aspect I have to admit. I understand it’s a part of the experience, but I think with our group they fell a bit short on the concept. The guests are supposed to converse and have a good time, share the meals, share the experience and all that stuff. I really get it - but we’re in Denmark 😂 it’s not happening. People who can afford to pay for such an experience, would probably rather just sit with their partner/family and enjoy without feeling pressured to engage with their table-mates. I felt it was a bit awkward to share your sides with the people around you, honestly I want my own stuff but that’s just me. I don’t think that kinda stuff works that well here, but props for pushing boundaries. I just didn’t notice anyone actually buying into that part of the concept. 5 starts regardless, could be 4 but I respect the journey Gro is on.
