Where to Eat and Drink in Delaware Beach Towns

"Founded in 1960 in Rehoboth, the regional chain is a member of the Pizza Hall of Fame, according to trade publication PMQ Pizza Magazine. Order the original cheese pie to fully appreciate the signature swirl of melty cheese and tomato sauce. For comparison’s sake, it’s worth trying out Nicola Pizza and Louie’s Pizza on the same trip." - Julekha Dash, Eater Staff

Google
A must-have while at the beach! The food and pizza are great as well as the service. The place was very clean with friendly staff. They have a takeout window if you wanna enjoy it at the beach or boardwalk.

Google
Pizza was tasty and came out fast. The simple greek salad was over the top. Great dine in areas.

Google
Was disappointed with our food ordered to our Airbnb. Taste and quality was just not what I expected, especially after it was hyped up considerably. Perhaps it was an off night and/or the food is better if you dine-in. Ended up throwing half of our food in the garbage.

Saima Baig

Google
We came here for a quick off season getaway. The pizza was decent but everything else was bland. Service was good.

Google
Very good pizza! Mozzarella sticks were also perfectly cheesy, gooey, and fried! Cheesy garlic bread was good but could've been a little better and softer. Waiter was SUPER sweet and nice and genuine too! Indoor and outdoor seating options are great

Google
Disappointed...great server, very attentive, Coke was completely flat, she replaced it, Salad was old and musty lettuce, sent it back, pizza is always good. Been coming to this location for over 55 years, Grotto has slipped a long way.

Stopped in to "carb up", for the bike ride back down the Gordon's pond trail back to cape henlopen state park. Delicious spaghetti & meatballs, great waiter.

Google

Yelp
Service was A+, they were slow as it was about 10pm on a Friday night in late September. Food was ok, we were starving & they were open. It's not as overpriced as some other restaurants around there.

Yelp
We were spending a Saturday on the beach and were looking for some casual lunch food. My daughter really wanted a cold sub to take back to the beach. This place was nearby and had about 10 different subs, in addition to pizza. We ordered a 6-inch turkey sib and a 6-inch Italian sub. They both had lettuce, tomaties, onions, and pickels on them. The subs were okay, but nothing outstanding.

Yelp
Decent pizza with good sauce. Fast service. Nice outdoor seating. A little overpriced, though.

Yelp
Generally, I liked this pizza for a boardwalk pizza, but comparing to other places I've had, it was average. Ambiance: (5/5) It is on theme with other boardwalk restaurants. Price: (4/5) Pretty standard prices. Food: (3/5) The cheese pizza was very sauce-y. Honestly if they didn't put extra sauce on top it would have been a 4 star review for me. The large fries are huge. Not too salty or soggy. Service: (4/5) Pizza takes about 20 mins to come out.

Yelp
Came here for a meal w the kids. I haven't been to this location but I've been to grottos a lot at other locations. Restaurant was empty and service was great. Pizza was good like always. It's a bit expensive for what you get tho.

Yelp
quintessential Delaware shore loveliness. my husband and I stopped in this grotto pizza location for lunch today. wow. holy cow. it was so good! my husband has been telling me about this place for years and trying it, It really lived up to expectations. Service was OK. A bit slow, not very attentive service people, but we sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the great weather of preseason shore time.

Yelp
Today we had the tossed fresh cut salad and the chicken ceaser that was also fresh cut. These salads are out of a bag. You can tell by the brown edges. The steak on the garden salad was terrible and the the ceaser was warm salad , cold chicken ( not fresh) as well as soggy croutons that were thrown on when they prepped it earlier. $62 for the worst meal ever. Also check out this salt. That hasn't been cleaned since last year.

Yelp
Good, decent pizza for a touristy location. A little pricey for the size of slice but was served quickly and slices were perfect for a light snack. Crust was thin and crispy and had a good balance of toppings and crust.
google avatar

Yelp
Grotto has the best pizza in Rehoboth Beach! We have been going here for years, and always leave happy. Their bone-in wings are also solid as well. Definitely recommend giving Grotto Pizza a try if you're wanting pizza in Rehoboth beach!

Yelp
This food is edible but that's it. The pizza is literally at the level of an average frozen pizza. Most of the employees are on their phones while they're working. If you ask anything other than the most basic thing you get the deer in the headlight look which means they are not trained. I know it's the boardwalk, but this is pathetic.
google avatar

Yelp
I occasionally eat this pizza when corporate orders this for our team. It's not my favorite kind of pizza. I prefer mozzarella cheese on my pizza. The cheese is a white cheddar cheese which when the pizza is cooked at high temperature the fats separate from the milk which renders a greasy pizza. I have to soak up the grease with napkin before eating, and the sauce made with a swirl on TOP of the cheese is way too sweet. I add some spice to reduce the sweetness with oregano and crushed red pepper. FWIW

Yelp
We tried this restaurant on the way out of town, mostly because we had never tried Grotto's pizza before. As this was the Grand Slam, it was also a sports bar. I don't know what the complaints about the atmosphere were about. The place was clean and not rowdy. Our waiter was thorough and made sure we never ran out of our drinks. We actually liked the pizza, and their Spinach and Artichoke dip was amazing! The pita bread came with garlic butter and Parmesan cheese on it. Super tasty. We initially ran out of the bread because they don't initially give you enough for all of the dip you get. But they gave us more pita to finish it up. We would definitely go back.

Yelp
Grotto Pizza is good in an average kind of way. The pizza and fries are good, but average. The service is average. The location is perfect for lunch breaks from the beach! That is the best part. They need to stop putting sauce on top of the pizza it takes away from the flavor. The cleanliness is average.

sandy d.

Yelp
Simply the best. Best pizza at the beach. Service is friendly. Cheesesteak not too bad.

Christopher G.

Yelp
Good food and courteous service right on the boardwalk. When you have a picky eater with you it's great to know you can find something they like. The menu is broad enough for families and individual tastes.

Yelp
This is a must try in Rehoboth. My boyfriends family spent a ton of time here over the years and they introduced me to Grotto when I came for my first visit and now we have to get some every trip! The pizza is classic and always good, while the space itself is a very typical boardwalk/pizza joint feel that's just classic.
google avatar

Shannah H.

Yelp
Giving 5 stars to a restaurant that happily fed pizza after pizza to hungry lost-race runners. The pepperoni and veg pies were especially tasty. The Grotto on the boardwalk is huge, too! Plenty of room to hang out with friends, enjoy good pizza and quality atmosphere. You can understand how they've stayed in business all these years!

Yelp
Stopped by because we wanted to eat outdoors with our beagle, but sheltered as storm was approaching. They allowed dogs in the attached outdoor covered patio. They even had fresh water in bowls and dog biscuits. All the employees there were very nice. We ordered the Spaghetti & Meatballs and also a Cheese Calzone. The former was plentiful in delicious meatballs with a thick tasty marinara sauce and 2 slices of garlic bread. The Calzone was huge- my wife could only eat half of it She states it's the best Calzone she's ever eaten. Congrats to the Rehobeth Beach Grotto Pizza on stepping it up both in friendly customer service and high quality meals!!!

Mary H.

Yelp
Dough and sweet marinara sauce with dense cheese. A frozen pizza would taste better at a fraction of the cost.

Yelp
As a Delaware native, Grotto's is a staple any time we're down at the beach. The taste is original and we always have a great time. The birch beer & cheese pie makes for a perfect lunch or dinner any time of the year ;)

Maddy Z.

Yelp
Pizza was yummy, and salads (particularly the maple walnut one) were high quality!! The service was pretty good, it was empty when we went. Definitely a casual vibe
google avatar

Pat F.

Yelp
The pizza sauce has imprisoned much! The wings are dry and I wouldn't buy them again
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Grotto's pizza is not good anymore. You use to get cheesy large slices baked to perfection. I don't know what that is they're serving now. Who doesn't use mozzarella on pizza? Plus over-baked small slices! Won't be back!

James T.

Yelp
Can't comment on the food. They sat us and never took our order. People came in after us, gave their order, ignored us. It was clean,
google avatar

Yelp
So i ordered a small diet coke the other day. Teg frickin lid was smaller than the small drink. Every time i held it it fell off. And guess what IT WAS $2.69!

Yelp
Grotto pizza is a beachside standard. I'm not sure if being on the boardwalk makes it taste better than it really is, but I'm not going to over analyze it. Our latest trip to Grotto was during a recent day trip to Rehoboth Beach. We stopped to eat lunch after a long walk on the beach. We sat in the outside dining area and were greeted by our cheerful waitress. It was a very "Covid safe" area and we were not at all concerned. The service was excellent! Of course, we had a large cheese pizza and enjoyed every last bite of it. Grotto pizza is not fancy, trendy or glitzy. It is a solid Delaware beach pie that serves up the right amount of cheese on a solid crust and drizzled with the signature spiral of sweet tomato sauce. I noted a lack of residual grease on the top of the pie which means they nailed the cheese portioning. No blotting napkins needed. If you're on the Rehoboth boardwalk and you're feeling a bit peckish, stop by Grotto Pizza. A solid pie at a fair price and a Delaware tradition!

Katera M.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Grotto's for ages because it seems like the thing to do at the beach...I'm clearly not the intended audience for this abomination. The weird cheese is of poor quality and it's like chewing a piece of 10 cent bubble gum; the sauce is way too sweet; and the crust is floppy. I had a feeling I wasn't going to love it but I honestly didn't expect it to be that bad. I knew it was a wrap after the first bite but I persisted...the third bite made me gag...

Yelp
Grottos is everywhere around the area and so I decided I had to try it. My friend and I just grabbed a plain slice and I was underwhelmed. This place is really every, it's like Pizza Hut in the Rehoboth area. I really liked that they had an outdoor patio and were dog friendly. They also had water and treats out for the puppies. That was a nice touch especially on hot beach days. The workers were also friendly. The place itself is nice too. The pizza just wasn't super memorable. The sauce was a little too sweet, but not terrible. The crust was a little dry. After a while you'll just want to try it because you see the name Grotto everywhere. It's not bad and it's not great, but try it out for yourself when you're on the boardwalk since it's a staple in town.

James P.

Yelp
It was quite delicious and flavorful. It had a slight bit of sweetness in the sauce with nice salty ingredients to counter and balance the flavors. They also have the option of gluten free crust which was also tasty. The server was so polite and the crew was awesome. Had a great time. There's also a bar connected to the restaurant.
google avatar

Trina L.

Yelp
Tried traditional pizza and boardwalk fries, delicious. Prompt service, food hot. Will try again.
google avatar

Marie T.

Yelp
Generally, for the area, the pizza is ok! We had the 16 in standard pepperoni pizza which hand 8 slices of pizza for 2 small kids and 3 adults. $18.99 For us, it was enough.
google avatar

Frank S.

Yelp
Best pizza on the beach. Takes awhile to get an order done. Little light on cheese, sauce is slightly acidic
google avatar

Alesia B.

Yelp
First I need to complain about the bad business sense they have. It's common courtesy if you are a patron whether it be to go, or eat in you should never no let your patrons sit to eat. We ordered bolis and were refused a seat inside and out even after ordering $30 worth. My husband loved the boli cause he loves sweet peppers and the fact the sauce is on the side. Now the pizza, Deleware if you really believe this is the best in the state yall don't have tastebuds , cause the pizza was not very good at all. Won't be back ! Won't suggest this place either especially if you want to eat there and not be seated by a waitress. At least make the outside for patrons that were still supporting your business.
google avatar

Yelp
Grotto is a unique style of pizza. They use a sweeter sauce and I believe an aged cheddar blend cheese. I prefer traditional Neapolitan-style, but this was still pretty good. They have a large menu if you're not feeling pizza (I love the bruschetta). The service and outdoor seating area are great.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
We hadn't been to Grotto in years, and we are wondering why. We had a great experience there tonight. Lexi was a fantastic server-- she was friendly and patient with our family ( we took a long time to decide). The food was delicious. We shared a pizza, 2 boli's, some cheesy garlic bread, and a Caesar salad. Everything was outstanding. Our favorite was the buffalo chicken boli, but you can't go wrong with anything. The prices were very reasonable, too. We will definitely be back.

Kevin J.

Yelp
Pizza is okay for a boardwalk spot and the location is very nice itself. Not the best but it is okay! We also had Shelby as our waitress and she did not check up on our table at all. On the contrary, the waitress for the table next to us was very attentive and we wish we experienced that service.
google avatar

William N.

Yelp
I had low expectations but the service was quite good and the pizza was to my surprise also quite good. It is hard to mess up a pizza but some places do it. However grotto did a good job making sure it didn't have too much of anything yet enough meat to cover it....which I liked. Prices weren't bad either.
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
Do you like pizza slices that are too small with really salty cheese on a toast like crust and chef boy r dee pizza sauce squirted on through a car lubrication tube??? Then this place is for you!!! I just had to see for myself what Delaware's best rated pizza is. LMAO!!! The only reason I gave two stars instead of one because I was really hungry and it didn't taste too horrible.
google avatar

Shelly J.

Yelp
Well you're at they beach, this will do. I prefer Nicolas pizza though. Staff seem friendly. A little forgetful. They followed strict social distancing guidelines. It seemed clean but I dont like there set up. Too much open space. I can't stand flies swarming inside a restaurant or near my food. I ordered a slice of pizza, I wasnt too hungry. Nothing exciting. Kinda bland honestly..Bland sauce. The crust isnt all that. I prefer Pizza hut over Grottos. However no PH nearby, so Im glad I ordered by the slice than getting a whole pie. Steak subs are a miss
google avatar

Alissa S.

Yelp
We've been regulars for years!!! Giavanna is apparently a manager with absolutely no customer service skills. She doesn't seem to understand that catering to a large party by moving ONE SINGLE CHAIR can make or break a business. It's simple math....if you have a party of 3 and a party of 9 while having an 8 top and a 4 top open, you can make both parties happy by moving ONE SINGLE CHAIR!!! If I ran my food business like this, I wouldn't have a business. Better yet, they sat us at a table next to a stack of extra chairs!!!

Yelp
Here comes the 1 star review from the chick from Jersey/NYC. People, dont even waste your time. I know my standards are high for pizza, but this is just crap. First off, it just looked flat and plastic. Cheese wasnt cheesey, grainy, and barely melting. The gravy itself was sweet and watery. Dough? Crust? Another chewy substance, and undercooked. No flop, no crust bubbles - just flat. I was watching them make the pizza, they actually pour the gravy out of this long arm looking tool that pours it onto the pizza. I dont know if this is genuis, or the reason behind the gross tasting gravy.

Gayandgray G.

Yelp
Just ate here for my niece's birthday. Food was great- service was great- ate outside and it was fun

Susan R.

Yelp
Good food. Good service. Absolutely horrible customer service when noting table by trash, a/c, ice machine, smoking area for employees next door. Argumentative and accusatory. Somehow my fault for not asking for better table. Here for milestone birthday. Soured by three people arguing that this mess was somehow my fault. I've been coming to Grotto since mid 80's for Bianco. This was likely the last time.
google avatar

Antwan W.

Yelp
Good wings, great pizza, good drinks and the best birthday cake flavored gelato on the planet! I've searched high and low and I can not find birthday cake gelato as good as Grotto anywhere. Whenever we are in Delaware, Grotto is a must have during our stay.
google avatar

Janet P.

Yelp
Your pizza love begins with early fond experiences, which for me includes Grottos. I did like to much older low key ambience of the original place, the new jazzier colors are rather loud and remind me of a Chucky Cheese. Still, their pizzas are good. The white and the red, both. The salads are fresh and tasty too. Nice selection of local beer on draft. And a Swirl card for repeat diners with a cute little birthday pizza bonus. Nice outdoor patio for the summers and flavorful gelatos.

Csafi M.

Yelp
there was Mold in cheese container. photo is attached. green and blue on the top. so gross
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Pizza is not good but easy boardwalk food. $4 a slice. Not great but if you want cheap food it serves its purpose.

Bailey A.

Yelp
Awful pizza, avoid this chain at all costs if you want something that tastes good. Idk how this place survives
google avatar

Breanna B.

Yelp
The manger Carrie wearing a black shirt. she made me feel very uncomfortable. I ordered takeout pizza and the ladies who served me said they were out of cheese packets and as I walked in to use the cheese shaker, she stared at me like I had a bug on my face. I'm African American and I have locs in a messy ponytail but I'm at the beach. I said hi to her and she said but just keep staring at me. I asked her if something is wrong? She did said I'm just wondering what you are doing. I didn't even sit down and she was telling me how I had a to go box and couldn't dine here. I was just using the cheese shaker. I felt really racially profiled. I told her it was very rude to just star at someone and not say anything. She said well I said hi after I said like that made it better. I felt discriminated against and I wives go back there again. they need to re-think about having this manager around.
