On the hunt for an authentic Juicy Lucy led us to Groveland Tap on a hot summer day in the Twin Cities. The ambiance is that of a pretty standard sports bar anywhere in America, but maybe on the slightly nicer side - this is no dive. It's clean and welcoming inside, and on a hot day it was very chilly indoors so since their patio was shaded we took our meal out back, which was actually lovely.
Three of us ordered burgers and I got the poutine. Something I love about travelling further north in the Midwest is you're treated to more cheese curds and the influence of Canadian fare, such as poutine. Why this hasn't caught on as much as far south as KC is strange to me, I mean, who doesn't love french fries, cheese curds, and gravy? Seems like a no brainer. At any rate, aside from our entrees we all decided to share an appetizer of fried cheese curds, and sample some local brews.
The highlight of this meal to me were the cheese curds and the local blueberry beer I sampled. All of the other food was good, but not remarkable, in my opinion. The cheese curds though, those were damn good. Lightly battered and fried they were light and chewy, just as they should be. I feel like especially when you don't live up north it's much easier to find sub par cheese curds, and I don't know if this is just the quality to expect in MN, but they were insanely good.
If I lived here I don't know if this place would be in my usual rotation for dinner or lunch, but it would certainly be a good contender for a happy hour as I think the stars here are really the appetizers and selection of local beers.
