18 Essential Restaurants in Macon, Georgia

"High quality, local ingredients give Grow’s Southern-influenced fare an edge. The menu fails to disappoint in terms of taste, and has a steady roster of vegetarian and vegan options, too. Meat-eaters are especially fond of the Soul Bowl, which is made with local sausage, collards, rice, field peas, pico de gallo, and cornbread." - Sarra Sedghi

Google
Service was good, food was absolutely delicious, every bite was five star and I was left wanting to eat more and more even when I was full. I highly recommend getting a salad here especially with the dressing options and the locally grown produce is super fresh. Just amazing all around

Google
We were on a long driving trip and this restaurant was selected from home as an appropriately positioned restaurant at the midpoint of our travels. Good home cooking of fresh ingredients. Nice selection of dishes. Very tasty. We would return.

Heather Austin

Google
I ordered the Soul Bowl and it was on par. We searched out a local restaurant with farm to table options. This was a great experience. I did see the salads and they are well rounded and will satisfy.

Google
Great little restaurant with amazing fresh food and friendly owners. We had the sampler platter, rutabaga fries, and the jerk shrimp. Everything was flavorful and perfect. Soda by the can. We'll try the nachos on homemade chips next time.

Google
Grow is amazing! We were traveling to the Savannah area and stopped in for what I knew would be a great lunch by my friend and owner, Saralyn Collins. And was I right! I had a grilled Greek salad and my plate was overflowing with fresh cut, crisp lettuce, tender tasty chicken and other Greek salad goodies. My friend had Mom’s chicken salad sandwich, which was huge and over stuffed. He ate every bite. He's a very picky eater and he loved it! Service was amazing, and Saralyn walks by every table to greet patrons and make sure everything was to the satisfaction. That's no surprise, knowing her. We highly recommend this restaurant, whether you want vegetables, salads or sandwiches. The menu changes monthly. It's worth a stop if you're traveling through, and it's a must if you're staying or live in Macon. Thank you, Saralyn and staff! And if you need catering for an event, this is you place! She's catered several events I have promoted and/or been a part of, and did an incredible job.

Google
Excellent food and service. The food was so delicious and the employees were so nice. Wish we had an establishment like this at home.

Google
I had a great experience at Grow when I went! I arrived shortly after they opened and I was the first customer in. Their dining room is clean and open, and they space out the guests when they come in. My server was very nice and attentive and I had awesome service from her! I ordered their black-eyed pea nachos and their vegan black-eyed red curry. Both of these were fresh, delicious, and filling!! I enjoyed my meal and left with a full stomach. Well worth the price of fresh food and I want to return and check out the rest of their menu!

Google
My first visit to this place and it was fantastic!! The jerk shrimp appetizer was just the right amount of spice and so delicious. My main course was the Greek salad with chicken and it was amazing! Everything was fresh and the portion size was far beyond what I had expected. The restaurant is a quaint little out of the way place with a cute decor. Our waitress, Melissa, was excellent despite being new on the job. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back!

Yelp
The soul bowl will cure all that's plaguing you. Everything was well cooked. The fall sampler was amazing. The boiled peanuts were on the salty side. Great service. Small dining.

Yelp
Healthy and extremely fresh food with choices for everyone from Vegan to Carnivore! Was busy when we arrived at 2pm and there was overflow parking next door. Boiled peanuts on the table upon seating and the Arnold Palmer was out of sight. We ordered apps that were perfectly decadent and refreshing. Super friendly staff that never made us feel rushed and were happy to help us with to-go items. If you're traveling through this part of the country do yourself a favor and stop by lunch or dinner. We are already making plans to come back.

Yelp
This is a lunch place and I am not local, so I barely managed to squeak in towards the end of their opening hours. It appeared that they are running mostly if not entirely as a takeout. The menu had several vegan options, but I ended up going for a salad which came with cheese, as well as ample nuts and a sweet dressing (southern salads do tend to be heavy and sweet). The rutabaga fries I added on the side were quite satisfying. I came hungry. There were certainly plenty of other things that looked to be worth ordering, and given the limited options for this sort of cuisine in the area, I'd recommend taking a look.

Yelp
Keto Option! I arrived just before noon and was the only patron in the restaurant. But, within minutes, the entire place was filled and I noticed people having to park in the lot next door. What a great surprise to have a basket of boiled peanuts delivered to the table right after I sat down. I ordered the Keto Chicken Fajita Bowl and couldn't believe how quickly it was delivered to the table. I noticed they have a drive thru so my guess is that this place is high quality food served as fast as fast food. Everyone was very friendly, the service was great and so was the food. For an extra dollar, you can add either rice or housemade chips. Of course adding those no longer makes it keto. I did blow my keto diet for the day and ordered the chips and they were outstanding! Yes, I intend to return the next time I work in Macon.

Yelp
Love eating here! Service is spectacular and food is always top tier! I come to eat lunch here at least once a week!

Yelp
Great food, service, and atmosphere!! Catering is always amazing food and beautiful set up. Highly recommend Grow!

Yelp
Best lunch place in Macon hands down. The food is always fresh and delicious ! Only down fall is they are opened M-F 11-3pm. Closed on the weekend.

Yelp
Quaint, clean cafe with fresh, home style food and caring, excellent service. As a vegan, I appreciate having several nice choices and my food was fresh and delicious. My Mom's fish meal was alse beautifully presented and tasty. Our portions were generous and prices were reasonable. Staff was pleasant, helpful, and experienced. Perfect place for a nice lunch or simple dinner - a real gem!

Yelp
I was so happy to find this place when driving through Macon. It is a fast food restaurant that has been converted to a grassroots locally owned business. They even still have a drive-through! I got a Soul Bowl which has smoked sausage, Black Eyed Peas, yellow rice, collard greens, pico de Gallo and cornbread. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Before coming to Macon I looked online for some restaurant ideas. This stood out as non chian, definately local, and healthy. I went on a Friday at 11:30am. Plenty of parking. You seat yourself here. Service is attentive and fast. They bring out boiled peanuts for free when they come to take your order. I have lived in Georgia for 26 years but never had that happen before. It appears all the food items are ready to serve so your order takes just a few minutes and its delivered to your table. All was good. The collards were more like ribbons in size. Cut that way. Not a big thing but I prefer them shreded into irreglar pieces as they retain heat better. The chick portion size also rather small. That same night I went to another known local southern place and had 2 huge breasts and more rice than anyone could eat for $2.50 less. But these things are not that important, and overall its a good spot to try if you want fast service, and local healthy food.

Yelp
Great food! It is always fresh and delicious. The salad was huge! The service is amazing.

Yelp
Hey!! I'm new to Macon, commuting here from Atlanta to work. This place is amazing!! Hard to find healthy choices, yet alone healthy choices that are delicious and don't break the bank! Don't judge this book by it's cover - go inside and experience it's story!! It's warm and delightful inside!!
google avatar

Yelp
The chicken was a little dry, but the macaroni salad was superb. Quaint lunch spot with very quick service.
google avatar

Yelp
We had two excellent salads (Greek and Spring), and will come back next time we come through here.

Yelp
This is a great homemade food spot! The variety and unique menu is Georgia food @ it's best. It's simple not fancy but perfect customer service and they actually use fresh food .

Yelp
This place feels like a typical southern soul food restaurant, but the food is high quality and healthy! The food is great without being overly greasy. I was in the mood for some soul food, so the soul food bowl really hit the spot. It satisfied my craving but didn't make me feel bad like typical soul food does. I would definitely recommend this homey little spot.

Yelp
Stopped in today for a quick lunch and was thrilled with my menu selections. Both my co-worker and I ordered the same thing.. Pimento & Bacon Grilled Cheese with Rutabaga Fries.. Both the sandwich and rutabaga were excellent... Service was great too. I will be returning often!

J L.

Yelp
Went for the first time and had the New Year's Brunch. Had the cheese plate appetizer and the brunch bowl. Food was excellent. Service was also excellent and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
Just fabulous! The food was wonderful, generous portions and felt like we had comfort food that was still healthy enough to feel good after. This place is a great option for vegetarians, so many veggie friendly options and they were amendable to slight changes when requested. Overall just great would come back and recommend!

Victoria P.

Yelp
I've been to grow a handful of time now and it has never disappointed. The chicken salad is awesome. I tried the chicken and dressing today and it was delicious. Drive thru is always super convenient as well. Will always recommend and return!

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant! Reminds me of the flower child in Buckhead! Great service along with good healthy food! Can't beat it at all especially not in Macon! Macon has a healthy choice with local food! Great job! Thanks so much!!!

Yelp
Busy lunch spot with healthier farm to table style concept. They have a drive thru for pick up orders! So not a fast food place though. Call, order and pick up if you're pressed for time. The staff is friendly and welcoming. If you come in the middle of the lunch rush, they understandably may not be quite as attentive and the parking lot fills up too. I've been here a couple times and had the summer chicken with peach salsa recently. You get two sides, and I went with creamed corn and rutabaga fries. Great meal! I loved the peach salsa and rutabaga fries! It's a hefty portion for lunch. The menu changes depending on what's in season with a few staples that are consistent. It's nice to have quality fresh ingredients at a reasonable price and not skimpy portions.

Yelp
The wife and I are out from California on our Anniversary trip, exploring the Georgia magic and traveling down to Savannah (of course). Loving all the BBQ and great Southern cooking, but, man, starting to feel a bit fat and slow after a few days of it. So, got on Yelp last night and found this little oasis of fresh food in the sea of chain places and deep-fat fryers. Hoped it would be good. Pleased to say we were not disappointed! Easy freeway access, clean, super, super friendly staff, and our order came almost instantly. Really fresh, really good stuff. Moist and fluffy cornbread. Even the fried eggplant my wife had (well, SOMETHING has to be fried...) was done with a light hand. Got out of there for only $21 for two and didn't feel like "blimp-boy" afterward. (So now I can pig out and booze it up in Savannah!) These folks care and seem to really be trying to make a go of it. In a world where indifference is the norm, this very refreshing and I hope they succeed in this endeavor. (Our waitress told us they have a Facebook page with the latest specials and weekly menus, so you might take a look for that.)

Jamie D.

Yelp
It's not easy to find healthy food in Macon. What a relief to find a place for lunch with salads and vegetarian choices. The food was good, but not great. Even so, I'd go back and try other things. Complimentary boiled peanuts were brought to the table. They we're good, but overly salty. The corn chowder tasted fresh, but lacked flavor. It came with cornbread which was good. The rutabaga fries were breaded and deep fried. They were bitter and salty and I couldn't finish them. My friend ordered a salad and it was beautiful and she said it tasted great.

Nanette R.

Yelp
Grow. I doubt there is a wrong thing to order. Sloppy Joe sliders with organic salad or Pimento Cheese on wheat with Vidalia Onion Rings. The sides choices are yummy and varied enough to make a meal of too.
google avatar

Christa C.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh food! Love their healthier take on southern food. Service is always great but there can be a wait. Cute place for lunch!
google avatar

Crystal V.

Yelp
Love the options here. Fresh, local foods for every diet. Leave room for dessert when you can!
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
Average food with not much of a drink selection. Most of the food didn't look appealing when brought out. Was disappointed because I love farm to table restaurants. Hopefully caught them on a bad day is all.

Yelp
What once was Good to Go has now become Grow! Under the same ownership, and features local and organic ingredients combined to make delicious, southern cuisine. Still has catering, but has been remodeled and re-designed and is like a completely new restaurant. Only open weekdays 11-3, but worth it if you want a good meal for not too much. The menu changes weekly, but has some favorites that stay a constant. My MOST favorite thing is the squash casserole and the eggplant Parmesan, but everything is great. Upon sitting, you receive a little something to munch on before ordering/receiving your meal. Delicious, affordable and completely different than the line-serve style that was at Good to Go. The delightful owner Saralyn who is sure to take good care of you when you're hungry.

C C.

Yelp
My review is based on a luncheon I attended where the caterer was Grow. I was extremely put off that the staff, while setting up the food buffet, used their hands to mix the salad and no gloves were ever present while getting everything together. I apprehensively got my plate and picked out some baked chicken, potatoes and green beans. While hot, I found everything to be pretty bland and it all basically tasted the same. In my opinion, it needed more seasoning and I would have appreciated some diversity in texture. I've heard some good things about the restaurant, but since my catering experience was so poor I doubt I will ever eat from them again.

Jamie P.

Yelp
Amazing!!! There were 6 in our party, we all ordered something different and loved every bite! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Macon. Local, fresh ingredients prepared to perfection. Love the hamburger steak, squash casserole and rutabaga fries but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
google avatar

Debra H.

Yelp
I have been coming to eat with saralyn (owner) for over 17 years. Grow is the latest example of her ability to create something so unique and of such top quality. You will be impressed with the quality of the food. It will taste great if it doesn't ask for saralyn. She will fix it. I know you will love the food. It is and always has been good. It will always be.

Courtney W.

Yelp
I live in Atlanta but occasionally I have to drive to Macon for work - The only thing I look forward to out of that 2 hour drive is stopping for lunch at grow fresh local food!
google avatar

Manny N.

Yelp
The food was okay at best, I ordered chicken wok. My server was terrible, now water refill, I had to get up twice once to get hot sauce and again for the teriyaki. I will not be back.
google avatar

Priscilla E.

Yelp
While I'm far from what one might consider a "regular" of Grow, I have dined there more than a few occasions since their re-design a year ago. Each time it has always been an enjoyable dining experience. Grow offers quick attentive service, an inviting atmosphere, welcoming owner and an interesting menu. Items like farm fresh goat cheese lollipops and homemade pimento cheese are delicious openers. While the menu changes weekly there are some items that remain constants. Thankfully the squash casserole is one of those constants and an absolute favorite. Always a pleasant lunch experience, I now look forward to trying them for dinner.
google avatar

Zac G.

Yelp
Good healthy option downtown even though I always end up getting the nachos or tacos which are great but I can't imagine too healthy. The vegetables are always fresh an delicious. Plenty of variety. Quick and friendly service.
google avatar

Nikki H.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat in macon! Great food and can always tell its fresh! They are adding breakfast and coffee which are two of my favorite things so once they add dinner will be a perfect spot for all 3 main meals of the day! Lunch is always fresh and never dissappoints so looking forward to what is to come. The eggplant is always my go to and they always deliver hot fresh peanuts free once you arrive to dine in.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. Had the grilled chicken that came with goat cheese, basil and grilled peaches with baked okra and cabbage sides. Topped it off with peaches and cream pie. Everything was super fresh and absolutely delicious. Service was friendly and prompt.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Super local farm to table specials daily. Worth the drive off the interstate to eat local and fresh. Super chips and salsa.
google avatar

Benji H.

Yelp
I am so impressed with Grow and can't believe it has taken me this long to try it, given that I am a local Maconite. Grow is a farm-to-table casual restaurant and offers some delicious, unique dishes made from local ingredients without draining your wallet. The menu changes weekly depending on what's in season. The black eye pea fritters are amazing and comes with jalapeño jelly. The eggplant parmigiana was delicious well and presented nicely in its own eggplant shell. I chose a side of rutabaga fries, which were interesting, something you don't see all too often. The market salad was delicious as well. I love how they display on the table where your food is from (which local farm or local company they got the ingredients from). Makes you appreciate what you are eating. Staff is courteous as well and gave good recommendations. The Owner came out to greet us and to make sure we were having a good experience. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Went here one time and will not be going back. The manager was so rude! As our order was being taken when we first walked in the manager or owner or whoever she was was talking to her staff so awful! The girl taking our order looked like she was about to cry. The manager lady was barking orders at her staff like a drill sergeant. The food was ok but it wouldn't matter if the food was the best in town, I will never go back. I was uncomfortable hearing this woman and I felt horrible for the employees
google avatar

Jessy L.

Yelp
Grow is one of the newest go-to local lunch spots for Macon. It used to be Good-to-go and has gotten a much needed facelift. They are a farm to table type of place w all local organic ingredients. And let me tell you, you can definitely taste the difference of some quality meat and produce. The chicken is always so moist and sides are always on point!! They change their menu weekly based off the produce available. They always get packed out, so get their early before they start running out. Definitely check this place out!
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and the food was fresh and fantastic! We ordered the medley basket as an app, Rueben, chicken salad and the kids had the sloppy joes. Great find!

Annmarie W.

Yelp
Most at Grow are AWESOME and some are a little bland. The best item on the menu is the goat cheese bite appetizer! All the sides, homemade chicken salad, deviled eggs, pimento cheese and eggplant parm are delicious! The ingredients are always fresh and local when possible. The jerk chicken is not as flavorful or spicy as I would like, but many people would be happy with it. The staff is always really sweet and reasonably quick. Overall, Grow is a very solid choice for downtown lunch.
google avatar

Perry C.

Yelp
Great food, great faces, I make sure I always visit Grow when I'm in the south period. If you don't eat there your only cheating yourself.
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
The food at Grow has to be some of the best in Macon right now. My favorite has to be The Monte Cristo and (when it's available) the Holiday Chicken. I'm hoping this spring Grow opens again for Dinner.

Jenny P.

Yelp
Food was pretty good! I had the smothered chicken which was really delicious!! I definitely want to come back!!!
