A truly magnificent museum and one of the highlights in Bruges. The moment you step into the Gruuthuse Palace, you can feel the history — it’s not just a building with displays, it’s an atmosphere. The rooms are beautifully presented, and the museum does an amazing job of telling the story of Bruges across several centuries, so you’re not just “looking at objects,” you’re actually traveling through time.
The collection is incredible (and surprisingly varied): majestic tapestries, stunning stained-glass, elegant carved wooden pieces, delicate historical lace, plus paintings, porcelain and silver — all displayed in a way that feels thoughtful and not overwhelming. There are so many details to admire, and it’s the kind of place where you keep stopping because something catches your eye again and again.
One of my favorite parts is that you’re walking through a real medieval city palace, linked to the Church of Our Lady by an authentic late-15th-century chapel — it makes the visit feel extra special and unique to Bruges. If you enjoy historic interiors, craftsmanship, and the “Burgundian Bruges” vibe, this museum is an absolute must. I left genuinely impressed and would happily go again.
