9 Best New Restaurants in Asheville Right Now | Eater Carolinas

"Guajiro began serving its Cuban comfort food from the window of its yellow truck in the fall of 2022, parked behind the Cotton Mill Studios in the River Arts District. In May of 2024, it settled into an indoor space with 45 seats and a full bar. In September 2024, the sunny spot became yet another restaurant casualty of Helene. Down, but not out, Guajiro is on its feet again, and serving the classic dishes owner Chris Barroso grew up on — mariquitas, tostones, black bean soup, his grandmother Rosa Morejon’s chicken soup, roast pork, and Cuban sandwiches." - Kay West

A group of us wanted to support new/re opened restaurants. We seen this local place had moved into the hi wire (Biltmore) and this would be a great place to grab food and drinks before the Tourists game. I’m gluten free and had plenty to choose from except the pastries as they had ran out for the day. Everyone loved their food from the shredded beef special to the classic Cuban sandwich. Check out photos

Haven't been there yet! We're visiting Asheville this weekend. I do cook Cuban food, but I haven't had good Cuban food in a restaurant in a while! I've read their story after the hurricane and can't wait to go. Finally went to Guajiro, on our way out of Asheville. Bought things to go. I read Chris's story about learning to cook from his abuela. I was born in Cuba, emigrated in 1962, very young. Grew up learning all of mom, dad and my grandma's recipes. I rarely go to cuban restaurants because some lack that authentic taste. Everything we had from Guajiro, had that authentic Cuban taste! It was magnificent! We truly enjoyed the food and the coffee we had! Can't wait to go back! Well Done Guajiro!!

Google
We were looking to eat a Cubano sandwich and cuban food while visiting Asheville. We choose Guajiro (a food truck). The sandwich was crispy, hot and delicious. The chicken breast, black beens and white rice were a great choice. Other customers from the area showed to be friendly and welcome us. Tables and bench area is available, enough parking as well. Friendly owner. Cooking time and serving time was well managed. Try this place, you will like it too.

Google
We were passing through, saw the great reviews on Google. It did not disappoint. As a cuban I can confirm that the food was amazing! The atmosphere was full of life, They were busy, so the food took a bit, but it was well worth it! As a cuban I appreciate the cuban sodas.

Google
We love this food truck here! Tucked outside Hi-Wire Brewing, there are picnic tables and a few parking spots perfect for lunch! Coquettes and Cuban Sandwich were amazing! As good as what we can get down in Florida! We are sorry for the damage in RAD and we look forward to your new restaurant for more Cuban food.

Google
Came back after the floods, and to our surprise, the food truck was back!! The food is amazing and the friendliness and customer service are exceptional. I only wish them and all the businesses in our beloved Asheville a speedy recovery. We will be back, for sure, in the Spring or Summer.

Google
Tasty food with traditional flavor! We had the congrí (rice and black beans), breaded chicken, maduros (sweet plantains), and tostones (fried plantains). Oh! Don’t forget the Cuban coffee. So happy we found their temporary location. Thank you for good service. We wish you much success!

Google
The chicken and rice was delicious and the rice and beans were a family favorite! Food was ready on time, we catered for a family dinner with gluten allergies and they were great with communicating about everything! Pickup was easy. Wish we lived here to eat more often!

Yelp
I don't write many reviews these days. But this spot deserves one. It's a food truck just outside Hi-Wire (which is another cool place) that makes the best Cuban north of Hialeah. On a nice day, there's nothing better than sitting at a table in this parking lot, eating a Cuban and sipping tequila (shout out to Hi-Wire's bartenders). Unless it gets crowded; then I'm out.

Yelp
The Cuban sandwich was amazing, I lived in Tampa for 20 years, and keep trying to find something similar to the authentic Cubano. Bread wasn't quite the same but the Gaujiro was close enough to please me. Fantastic flan, empanadas, and yuca frita. I WILL be back!

Yelp
Best Cuban sandwich and maduros in town! I'm glad to see they'll be in front of High Wire for a while.

Yelp
Ooooh. Very tasty. This spot is going on my regular rotation. I suspect all the ex-Miami folks moving here are going to depend on it. The rice and beans are on point. The chicken, while smallish, was seasoned wonderfully. My son loves the empanada. They have all the cuban hits including cuban breakfast. The food truck outside seems nice enough but I suspect they will outgrow it. They have this bar/lounge space with an addition back patio. Has this underground expat club sorta vibe. There are these little packages merengues for instance that set the vibe even if I don't know they are. I suspect someone misses getting them back home. They are hosting Social Club events that make perfect sense there. Service has a touch of attitude mixed with a sort of generous friendliness. Perhaps I would call it a bit of sass. I look forward to going back.

Yelp
Guajiro describes itself as Cuban comfort food. The location is a combination of a permanently anchored food truck where you order and they cook the food, several outside tables around the food truck and the inside and outside area of an adjoining bar called El Patio de Guajiro. So a nice choice of places to eat both inside and outside. We sat at a downstairs table below the bar next to the food truck and there was great shade and a nice breeze even on an otherwise hot day in the River Arts District (RAD). We had 2 sandwiches: the Pollo a la Plancha (grilled chicken) and the Pan con Lechon (roast pork). Of the two, the Lechon was by far and away better -- very well seasoned pulled roast pork. The seasoning is uniquely Cuban style, so this is not a pulled pork sandwich like you can get anywhere else in Asheville. It was very good as it was served, but the addition of their guava jalapeno hot sauce made it even better. The chicken sandwich on the other hand was good, but not very interesting. The seasoning was not particularly flavorful and the onions were few and bland, but the chicken itself was nicely grilled and the bread it was served on was fantastic, with a nice crispy crunch. Adding some guava jalapeno sauce really saved the chicken sandwich. We had a side of yucca fries. I think the yucca fries are much better at Little Chango. Here they were much thicker cut and so the yucca was a little chewy inside. Still good though and the outside had a nice crispness and flavor. The dipping sauce was just okay (again, Little Chango's sauce is much better). The beers from the patio bar were fine, although the selection was limited. The bar tender was very friendly and courteous. Not quite worthy of 5 stars, but a perfectly good place in RAD for lunch and a beer.

Yelp
A Cuban food truck near a brewery. Mostly authentic but it seemed to be missing something. Would try it again and the service was quick and food was decent.

Yelp
Food & service were fantastic! We ordered beef & a ham/cheese empanadas plus the media noche & Cuban sandwich. All were super tasty & the staff were excellent! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I had heard so many good things about the Guajiro Cuban food truck in the RAD, so we finally tried it. I spent a good part of my growing up days in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, where we had fresh-baked Cuban bread almost every day and Cuban dishes frequently, and we always visit our favorite Cuban places each time we go back to Tampa or Miami. Sadly, in my opinion the Cuban sandwiches, roast pork sandwich and plantains from Guajiro didn't live up to the hype. They were mediocre at best, and not a bargain. Most of the sandwiches we bought ($12 to $13 each) just sat in our fridge, partly uneaten, until we threw them out. Maybe we just chose the wrong items, and maybe this food truck has some amazing Cuban food, and that the owners are of Cuban heritage, so we'll try it again sometime, but frankly our expectations aren't very high.

Yelp
Pan con bistec and Cuban frita were amazing. Been here a couple of times. Super convenient to order. The outdoor seating during spring is amazing. Café con leche was good although a bit small.

Yelp
Best Cuban between here & Miami . I especially like their Cuban. Sandwich. Note they have new location.

Yelp
Best Cuban sandwich I've had since living in South Florida. Great spot when walking on the greenway with inside and outside dining options.

Yelp
Nice Cubano. I liked the fried tiny potato chips, it added some texture and crunch. Staff was friendly and it's in a cute spot where you can grab a bite and explore the river arts district.
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic and delicious. They have outdoor and indoor seating. Slightly pricy for a food truck but the portion sizes are fair. I found this spot to be the perfect refueling station after a long jog on the river trail. Support the small local businesses!

Yelp
I got the cuban sandwich and pineapple soda, highly recommend. They have some nice outdoor tables and great customer service!

Yelp
New spot getting rave reviews- so much so they are flooded and can't keep up! A good thing, I suppose? If you want a full selection of the menu I suggest getting there when they open... 10:30? 11? We arrived at 1 and about half the items were covered over with blue tape. Sad, I was desperate for a medianoche. Instead we got 2 croquettes (So good. Possibly better than ones in Miami) and a guava cream cheese pastry. We snagged the last one. The family came from Miami 3 months ago and I'm so happy for an easy stop for cuban- the only thing I miss from SoFla. You could see the guy at the register was stressed and hopefully as time goes it'll calm down and things will run more smoothly for them. Until then your best bet is to get there when they open or soon after to have a large selection to choose from.

Melanie F.

Yelp
Delicious and reliable quality. Great outdoor seating too! A go to spot when in that area.

Yelp
Excelente vale la pena los sándwich. Service good. Great and clean. El postre de guayaba divino!

Yelp
The flavors are spot on, fresh, generous portions, best meal I have had all year. And this was delivery, I cannot imagine how good it is in-house.

Yelp
Eat/order here, you won't be disappointed! After struggling to find decent food on door dash, we lucked out with this place. Best meal we have had in Asheville so far. Everything has great flavor, tastes homemade, feels healthy and authentic and you can tell it's made with love. The pulled pork plate was so tender and delicious and big enough to share. The included rice and beans were excellent. In fact, prob the best beans I have ever had. Reasonable prices, even through delivery. Wasn't crazy about the croquettes - but that might just be me. Healthy, delicious food. Ordered the side sauces - def worth it, especially the citrus. Will be back :). 9.5/10. Recommend: absolutely! No pics of the food because we ate it (sorry)

Yelp
I'm a 78 year old American who left Cuba in 1962. Lived in Miami 25 years. Had the moros or congri (rice & black beans cooked together), tostones (fried green plantains), and a Cuban sandwich. I was very pleasantly surprised as I did not expect the top quality/great taste/perfectly cooked Miami/Havana style food. Service was great, friendly, and pleasant. It was raining so we took the food back to the hotel.

Yelp
Everything they served was incredible. Best Cuban food I've had outside of Little Havana.

Lady H.

Yelp
Good authentic Cuban food,, friendly service but they tend to skimp on the meat. My order had lots of rice and beans. Ut very little meat, but it tastes amazing

Nancy N.

Yelp
Best Cuban I've had in my life. And I'm no spring chicken Also, the roast pork dinner was outstanding, says my 14yo

Maxine M.

Yelp
Speechless. Authentic, FRESH Cuban food!! Everything is made to order and it's dang good. They even cook their croquetas to order, nothing is sitting in a case all day like many other Cuban places! I am Cuban from Miami - I KNOW CUBAN FOOD- and this little place right here is the real deal man!!! I came two days in a row during my stay in Asheville, it's THAT good. Their Vaca Frita is hands down the best I've ever had in my life . I will think about it often. I'm so proud they are representing our flavorful cuisine so well!!!! it's a MUST TRY!!!!! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
One of the best Cuban sandwiches outside of Miami and Tampa FL. Service was friendly and not rushed. The sandwich was not greasy or oily. Looking forward to trying the other menu dishes.

Yelp
Authentic Cuban food. Take it from a Cuban. Can't go wrong. Located and service are good no complaints. It's great having real Cuban food in Asheville

Yelp
Delic, fresh, crispy guava pastries, beef empanadas & flavorful black beans/rice! Yummmm

Yelp
I asked some Cuban friends where the best Cuban food is in Asheville and they highly recommended Guajiro (which means, "farmer or rural person"). So I headed there for lunch and O...M...G...it's to die for. I've had great Cuban food in Miami and San Diego, but I have to say, the food at Guajiro is THE BEST I've ever had. I had the palomilla steak (no onions for me though) which looked mouthwatering when it came out and it was flavorful. It came with a very generous portion of black beans and rice (truly the best I've ever had, anywhere - I could have had seconds for sure), and I got some sweet plantain (3 of them). All of it was excellent. And then, I had to try the flan for dessert. Now I will say the flan I had at Andres Restaurant in San Diego (unfortunately now permanently closed) was THE best flan, ever. But...the flan here ranks a close second and can become addictive. I had a little bit of it there, at one of the picnic benches (lots of seating btw. Picnic tables and high tops). But saved some for home. It didn't last long. It was gone by the evening. I couldn't help myself. The service was excellent. The area where the food truck is permanently located is in the River Arts District. Guajiro has a permanent place in my "favorites" on my iPhone.

Yelp
Visiting Asheville found this wonderful gem for Cuban Food! We ordered Media Noche, Frita Cubana, Croqueta Preparada all sandwiches and 2 Flans. We're so happy to find this comfort food, especially being a Miami native! The BEST Media Noche I've ever had. Spoke to the owners very nice people, very clean. Great experience!

Yelp
Just had their special of the day the to ropa veja and it was one of the best I've ever had. Wow tried my friends pork and it was amazing. Can't wait to come back and try everything on the menu

Yelp
Exceptional Cuban food and I don't say that lightly. We had an amazing Pan Con Bistec- the bread was soft, the meat was tender and the veggies were so fresh. Our tostones were fried perfectly and not greasy. We finished our lunch off with a beautiful flan-so so so so good! We will definitely be back :)

Paul W.

Yelp
Excellent. My wife and I are originally from south Florida so we know good Cuban food. She wanted a cuban sandwich and found this place so we went and we were blown away. This is authentic Cuban food in the mountains. Their cuban and Medianoche sandwiches are fantastic as well as their pastries and espresso. I can't speak on the rest of the menu because every time I go I end up getting a Medianoche with a cafecito if you want a pastry, arrive early or they will be gone! 5 stars

Yelp
Great place in the art district of Asheville. Great breakfast and great options just a reminder of back home

Yelp
Look no further for authentic Cuban food in Asheville. Everything I've had so far has not disappointed. From the Cuban pastries and sandwiches to the congri and cafe con leche, it was all delicious. Can't wait to go back. Service was great also, super nice folks and very welcoming.

Yelp
We have been looking for 17 years since we moved here from mid and south Florida for AUTHENTIC CUBAN food. Asheville has good Cuban sandwiches with that Asheville foodie spin, but they are not authentic! Guajiro is a permanent food truck with outside dining. If you call ahead, your order will be ready when you get there to go. All is pretty much cooked to order. The Cuban sandwich had crispy pressed Cuban bread and sliced pork - all the others here in the area use pulled pork. The Yucca fries were hot and crunchy and served with that wonderful light green garlic aioli sauce for dipping. Maduros were soft and sweet and Congri was so flavorful. We ended this wonderful meal with a true S. Florida Cortadito coffee. We will be back for many other interesting things on their menu. Try it, you will love it. I'd attach pix but we ate it all! YUM!

Patty P.

Yelp
Having lived in Puerto Rico and eaten quite a bit of Cuban food this food truck tops the list of the best Cuban food in Asheville (we have tried others). Our meal was great and the plantains were exceptional! We will definitely be returning.

Arlene R.

Yelp
Looking for authentic Cuban food in Asheville, NC? This is the place!! The food tastes just as great as my Cuban mother-in-laws!!

Lesha C.

Yelp
Delicious black beans, maduros, and rice make a tasty vegetarian-friendly combo. Will definitely be back again to try their jackfruit dish - it was not available when we went. It didn't take long to get our food after ordering. Can't wait to visit again.

N F.

Yelp
Best Cuban sandwich ever. Stopped by for the first time before a show at the Guitar Bar. Great value - we'll definitely be back!
