A Local’s Guide to a San Diego Football Bar | Eater

"A cozy yet upbeat Mission Beach spot that pairs big-screen football with calming aquarium views, proudly supporting Broncos and Vikings fans. Novel, oversized cocktails reflect team spirit—the Famous Bionic Beaver fishbowl mimics on-screen colors—while smaller options like an Irish Pancake Breakfast shot (Jameson and butterscotch schnapps with OJ and a slice of applewood bacon) add to the playful, beachside game-day atmosphere." - Vox Creative

I rarely visit the beach, but if I do visit PB, this is a good stop. I'd recommend this as a stop for any friends visiting that want to go to the beach. The happy hour is ideal, because beach prices can be tough. Food is great, drinks are cold, and the staff is friendly!

Google
This place is absolutely doing it right. Good quality food excellent atmosphere nice and clean service is super fast. Shout out to Matthew our server. The menu had a lot of good options at a good value. came in on a Sunday afternoon and there were a lot of tables available. I enjoyed the ambience. The food was very fresh. I will say the mahi-mahi was a little bit dry. I would definitely go back. I can’t give five stars unfortunately because they’ve got that 4% service charge snuck in at the bottom of the menu that they apply to every bill. That’s extremely low class and scummy behavior by the business. Adjust your menu prices accordingly to pay your employees don’t try and trick customers. READ YOUR BILL.

Guava Beach Bar in Mission Beach is one of the best spots in San Diego for a laid-back, fun night. The margaritas are top-tier — strong, refreshing, and full of flavor. Tons of great options from classic to spicy to fruity. The staff is super friendly, and Ben and nick Mike in particular made the experience even better. Chill, professional, and just a great energy behind the bar — he really adds to the good vibes. Food’s legit too (grab the tacos!). Awesome beachy atmosphere with great music and cool people. Definitely worth stopping by if you're anywhere near Mission.

Google
8.6 Ol Smokey Burger 9.6 Chips and Guac The burger was pretty good. It came out a lil cold though and the bacon strips were good but for how much bacon is given, it made the burger a lil salty The waffle fries were for sure the better choice. My friend got the regular fries and said they were soggy and weren't that good The guac was absolutely amazing tho and I think they make their own chips. Probably some of the best guac I've had anywhere Overall a decent place. Id go back

We stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner one day on our trip in San Diego. My son noticed the Minnesota Wild & Vikings flags hanging out front so we had to check it out (being from MN ourselves). Service was good, food was outstanding, and the owner stopped over to chat with us and shared some photos from Vikings events from this past season. We definitely want to return and catch a game here with the other Vikings fans! I recommend the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich- the slaw is great, and get the tots :)

Google
This place is 5 stars for so many reasons - the atmosphere is great (perfect for padres games!), the staff is so friendly and personable, and the food and drinks are perfect. I had the carne asada and chicken tacos as well as queso and a margarita and all were great. Our larger group had such a great time getting to know the staff and loved learning about the history of Guava as well. Absolutely will be back!

Google
What an amazing experience! We came to Guava Beach as a party of 12 for dinner and had a great time. The service was fantastic and helped us to pick a few shared appetizers. We loved the queso and ceviche as well as (something they are know for) the margaritas. The appetizers were filling but most people had the tacos for dinner. I had the harvest veggie dish and was surprised by how many options there were for vegetarians. This spot has been recently renovated and is a great friendly and approachable spot for locals and tourists alike to grab an easy meal, enjoy a nice environment and watch some sports (or just hangout!)

Google
Stopped by on our way to our place as we had some time before we could enter. Everyone was friendly and the drinks came fast. We decided to return later on for a snack and another drink. Good hot wings! Definitely has the feel of a local place. Would recommend.

Yelp
Kelly was an energetic and great server. We had a nice dinner here while staying in the area. There are multiple TVs going inside with sports going. We sat inside on a comfortable booth, this a casual place. Music is blasting and the servers are all friendly. We got the warm chips with great queso, salsa and guacamole. My kale and quinoa salad with grilled chicken was delicious! The salad had so much flavor and chicken added a nice touch. It was a few strips of flavorful and moist white meat. The chicken tenders were a little over done but fine. We will return if ever in the area.

Yelp
This is a must stop if you are in Mission Beach. It's the best blend of casual and delicious dining. Sarah, our server, was attentive and so helpful. If you come here make sure to get the Mahi Mahi plate- it had the best coconut rice and the fish was flaky and delicious. My friend also highly recommended the veggie tacos. So far this has been our favorite restaurant from our visit to San Diego!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was fantastic couldn't say much about the food unfortunately. There was a group of 3 of us not one of us ate even half the sandwich we ordered. I would go back for some drinks but don't think I'd be ordering any food again unless I got drunk and hungry.

Yelp
Just moved to the area so now we are trying all the places close by! You get what you expect in a sports bar like restaurant. I got the salmon taco with rice and it was underwhelming. Salmon was fine but rice was undercooked and lacking flavor and corn tortilla was... interesting. Partne said burger was also below average. Tiramisu was an awesome treat! Tasted kind of like a tres leches. Service was also fabulous. Will be coming back to enjoy their cocktails, environment, and appetizers. I'll give the rest of the menu a shot :)

Yelp
Recommended for the atmosphere, drinks and service! The mango margarita was great! The service was attentive and quick! The food was presented well and sitting outside was great! There is ample seating inside and out for larger groups as well! The big fish tank with an adorable pufferfish was fun to see and the music was on point. The food was fine. Mozzarella sticks were ok, coconut crusted mahi mahi sandwich was fishy but the sweet bun was yummy as well as the tots. The blackened shrimp taco was fine and the kicken chicken sandwich adequate to good. The onion rings were very bready. If you are looking for a cool hang out for drinks with friends I would visit again.

Yelp
Our experience (June 19th) was we waited to be seated as ask. The host showed us to a dirty table and I asked if we could sit somewhere else. There were a couple of clean tables. The response was sure, so we selected a clean table away from the noise. We waited for the waitstaff to service after 10 or 15 minutes we went in and asked for menus where we were told that the waiter was just coming out with water for us. We took the menus went back to our table and waited. The waitstaff looked after everyone around us and cleaned tables. we still did it received our water or even an acknowledgment of our presence. We waited another 15-20 minutes at which point, the waitstaff serviced someone else but not us. We took the hit and left. We were not going to be served. On the flip side we went Ms. B Coconut Club and had wonderful service as soon as we stepped foot in the place.

Yelp
Had a great dinner here on a quiet Sunday evening. Had eaten here before but did take out. I will first say the service was on point and excellent, super attentive, friendly and welcoming. We ordered a bunch of food - all of it was very tasty: coconut shrimp, brussels sprouts, burgers, chicken strips and a Southwestern Cobb. Super hearty portions, prices were good.

Tara D.

Yelp
Ended up here by accident. Just loved the food! Had a Cobb salad. Far from bland. The bf had mahi mahi grilled tacos. He loved them too! Sam was great! Very attentive.

Yelp
Came here recently to try somewhere different for dinner. And it was trivia night. I did not officially play but it was fun for my friend and I to play along just together. We both ordered the fajitas and they were so good. Lots of toppings and lots of me included and the price was amazing. I do feel the price of drinks was very expensive. $16 for one margarita is a lot for the Pacific Beach / Mission Beach area. So unfortunately I probably will not be going back there for drinks again but I will probably come back for the fajitas. The servers we're nice and friendly even though it was a tad slow. When it said we needed just another minute to look over the menu they probably didn't come back for close to 10 minutes and we were just sitting there with no food or drink order even taken. And this was for trivia started so the place was not busy. But I will give him a pass this time. It's street parking which can be tricky. Just know that going in. You can also try to park across the street at Santa Clara place.

Yelp
There is no better place to watch a Vikings game in San Diego! The purple decorations and Vikings swag. The purple beads with every table. So fun. And some of the happiest servers in the world. Best deal at brunch time is the Guavamosa. $17 for a bottle of champagne and guava juice. And get the Diablo burger. Spicy and delicious.

Yelp
We showed up around 915 on a Thursday after a day at Legoland and quickly found out most places in the area close their kitchens around 9 and turn into bar only options which is great for people with no kids but we had 4 teenagers with us so we just went ti a a different restaurant... The next day the hubs and I made sure to get there in time to get some snacks with our beers. We sat at the bar, ordered beer (the taps are mostly local or from breweries in California) The glasses and beer are ice cold and super refreshing even on a "cold" California night. We ordered the ceviche and mozz sticks. Mozz sticks were meh just fried cheese ... lol the marinara was pretty good. The ceviche was served in an oversized martini style glass with chips. Flavor was good but man it was mostly tomato's. Mixture of ahi and shrimp (super big chunks) which was nice but once you got 1/4 of the way down the glass it was ALL tomato/cabbage (filler) so at that point it was pretty much just pico de gallo. Vibes were good. Service was good. Seemed to have quite a few locals which is always a good sign. Not a bad spot to start or end a night of bar hopping! Would definitely visit again! Cheers!

Yelp
The happy hour deals are good, so was the service and the food tasted great. The portions are HUGE!

Yelp
Good margaritas, carnitas tacos spot on, lobster tacos dry, over seasoned creole and fishy tasting. Inside and out seating, service was impeccable, manager made right for us when settling the check-thank you!

Gracie F.

Yelp
Went in here a couple of times yesterday for the holiday and the bartenders were incredibly kind and lovely people. That's it, that's the review, this will be my go to spot next time I visit mission beach.

Yelp
Food was great and so was the service! Kid/family friendly. Did not disappoint. Within walking distance to where we were staying.

Lisa M.

Yelp
Wow! The best dinner I've had in San Diego! The asada tacos, triple dip with chips and Cadillac Margarita were the BOMB! I will definitely return. Don't miss this place! We visit San Diego often and we're thrilled to find this place. Great music too. Choose outside table. Our server was excellent.

Yelp
Sam was our server and he was very friendly and layback which was perfect for us! We had the chips with salsa and guacamole to start and we could not get enough. The chips alone were amazing!!! We had shrimp tacos and lobster tacos. Both were great and had the perfect amount of cabbage and sauce in each one. The ambiance was very pretty. The kids kept watching the fish in the tanks. Overall I would recommend this restaurant for any of the dishes. They all looked amazing and everyone was having a great time. Really good experience!!
google avatar

Marianne L.

Yelp
Excellent location, great service and good food! Ice cold beers, strong cocktails and hilarious servers. We tried the Mahi plate, it was delicious. I would skip the blackened shrimp taco but the other flavors are delicious. Perfect little beach bar and restaurant.

Yelp
Great place, Great service, Great Irish Coffees, & great for groups! What else could you want?

Yelp
The shrimp tacos were AMAZING!! Also highly recommend the guava margarita! Our server Alexa was the best!!!

Yelp
Local San Diegan's, we've been coming here for years! There has been an upgrade to Guava Beach establishment that sets it apart in Mission Beach! extensive menu, great food, fun happy hours and the best sports you can watch on multiple TV's! Morgan, our friendly Guava beach server met all needs!! Our new fav!!!!

Yelp
Stopped in for a meal with the family the other day. Sat outside at one of the bigger tables as the weather was nice and it was open. Started with a few drinks then ordered the seared ahi wrap, which was really good and very filling. Didn't care for the little side salad with orange mixture that came with the wrap but otherwise it was delicious. My husband did the mango mahi plate and really enjoyed that as well. Kids shared the cheeseburger slider and fries. Everything was good only downside to the meal was I ordered the brownie and ice cream to go and it took like 20+ mins for that to come out. It was good when we ate it back at the house just good to know to order that like halfway through meal next time.

Patti W.

Yelp
This place was awesome! Great atmosphere, even better food and drinks and the SERVICE is phenomenal! The guys working were in such great spirits and our waiter was really on top of things. Will definitely we back when in SD!

Roger H.

Yelp
My wife enjoyed her blacked salmon, though it wasn't seriously blackened like you'd expect. My pulled pork sandwich was good, though what I thought would be sides were all piled on top, DDD style. The Caddilac margarita was tasty, but no way was the "14-ounce" glass 14 ounces. I'd say get the larger one, but not at the price, so I really think that was a hose job.

Yelp
We came here after the floatie festival and had a table set for us by the time I walked over. I ordered the coconut crusted mahi mahi sandwich and it was very flavorful. My friends got the burger, a couple of salads, some wings, chicken tenders and tater tots. The food took a while to arrive, but overall service was fine.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Just came in for the first time after their complete remodel...Wow. The place looks amazing. So fresh and so clean... I split mixed fajitas with my friend. More than enough food for both of us. The staff was great as well. Most definitely will be back.

Yelp
Really good food, pretty reasonably priced. We visited on a Monday night. They weren't very busy and were able to seat and serve our large group easily. Everyone left full and happy!

Connor E.

Yelp
The food was amazing; unfortunately, the service was not. Sam was our waiter, and from the start, he had a bad attitude. I didn't think much of it, and honestly, I understand--people in the service industry have bad days and are expected to fake a smile. But he never checked up on us or asked how we were doing. We finished our meal (which was delicious), but we had to wait about 20-30 minutes just to receive our check. Due to the bad service, I tipped 10% to reflect that. He quickly walked inside, and I followed just to ask for the receipt. I walked back to the table and then waited another 20 minutes before finally going into the restaurant and demanding it. He proceeded to tell me that it was what I deserved because I tipped "like a shit customer." I let him know it wasn't rocket science--the tip was because of the terrible service we received. Again, great food, terrible service. It looked like everyone else had a good experience, but my biggest complaint is our server, Sam.

Kingston C.

Yelp
We were really excited to eat here as a party of 4, as the reviews were good and the menu looked promising. Sadly, the service was quite bad as the waiter was very nonchalant, inattentive, and frankly absent. The food while tasty was incredibly small portions and the drinks that were ordered were just liquor with a splash of syrup. The propped up skylight with a cinder block was a bit worrisome to say the least in regard to the ambience. Expensive as well all with a 4% surcharge. Do not recommend eating here. As a closing note, our water vessel had a black smear that had particulate floating throughout.
google avatar

Jenna M.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and we really enjoyed it we even came back to meet some family for dinner. The burgers and fries were great. The margs weren't bad but make sure to order an extra shot because they are too sweet! Scottie took care of us and was great. However, the "service" charge here is pretty ridiculous. I would recommend this place for sure.
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
I truly can't say enough amazing things about this place! Top tier food, drinks, and staff. After the new renovation this place is sparkling and looks amazing! Definitely a fun place to be any night of the week.

Carolyn H.

Yelp
The menu had a great variety and was delicious. The service was also wonderful. Our family of 7 loved it.

Yelp
If you're a Vikings fan in San Diego, this is a MUST STOP. We went for the Saturday Bengals game and waited in line for a spot before open. We were able to get a table to seat 8 of us - I wouldn't recommend coming later than 30 minutes before game start to snag a seat inside or outside. The vibes here for gameday are unmatched for being an away team bar. Loved that they opened the place up for fresh air with garage doors. There are TVs everywhere at every angle - there's no bad view! Plus there's a great DJ that plays music before, and during commercial breaks. He also announced Viking's first downs, and played the fight song during touchdowns. If I could come here every Sunday for a game I would! There's an NFL brunch menu until 11, the bloodies were delicious and I had a yummy screwdriver with tequila. Started with some toast, but the breakfast items looked perfect for a gameday Sunday. The best part was that they had Grape Apes, the signature Minnesota purple shot - only downside is they need to add straws, but they tasted as good as home. For lunch 4 of us shared the Nachos with Chicken (minus Beans). Nothing too crazy special but hit the spot after a few drinks and beer pitchers. Between the Nachos, Beer Pitchers, Shots, Food and Fun from 9am-2pm, we spent about $161 for the two of us (included a shirt I bought). For the amount of fun, food and drink we had it was well worth it!
google avatar

Shay B.

Yelp
Sat at the bar. Good selection of draft beer and some funny bartenders, they had the Lakers game and music going on too. Ordered some ceviche that ended up tasting pretty good.

Garrett P.

Yelp
We were here on a Friday at around 10:45 and they denied us any sides for our chips, and the way that they said nope to us with rude intent multiple times made me frustrated because they offered us chips "on the house" but them being extremely rude to me and all of my friends threw the "on the house" idea. Very rude!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food great service and great vibe. Family showed up to this known gem, guava beach for my daughter's birthday and was well taken care of by our server kelly. She was well attentive and a delightful sparkle to our families experience at guava. From the fire nachos piled high with meat and toppings, burgers with waffle cut fries and the large margitias and ice cold brews to chill under the sun and shade. Followed with the cherry on top was the vip birthday dessert of tiramisu and whip cream. A perfect Delightful end to finish our great time.

Yelp
stopped by guava Beach with friends on the fourth after a hot day on a boat in Mission day. Great place to grab a drink and hang out with friends. I really like the large screens that they have available for viewing sports games. We had super chicken nachos, which were very large and filling. I really enjoyed them. The service was good and specifically our server was very nice and attentive. Although he seemed a a little overworked and was attending to a lot of tables at once. Awesome place to hang out with friends, but generally not super original and nothing to call home about.
google avatar

Shoshanah P.

Yelp
Everything about this place is just awesome! The vibe is fun and inviting, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is so freaking good! I was in PB for 5 days and ate here for dinner twice! Personally, I had the Diablo burger and the mahi mahi tacos and both were so delicious! I will definitely be coming back here the next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Verbil K.

Yelp
Nice place on the main drag. Drinks and food are above average pub fare. Has a good vibe. I liked the trivia night.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing drinks!!!! Alex bartender took care of us the bar manager is very personable. Must come visit this place.

Yelp
Came for a frose on a Friday but the blender was broken... sad day - hope they get it fixed soon. How does one get blended margaritas and frose?! Slow service beyond the beach vibe relaxed slow. Like the bouncer was serving water and our waitress was not around. I used to frequent this place when I lived closer and I want to support small business. I hope the owners remedy the situation as it's a great location.
google avatar

Justine H.

Yelp
My friends and I came on a Tuesday night to try out their trivia and night and although we were disappointed by how empty it was for trivia, the food and deals were great. It was taco Tuesday so tacos were $2 off and we all shared a margarita pitcher which was the perfect amount. The two tacos were big and filling, the carne asada had the best flavor from everything too. I will say the desserts were pretty sad and the brownie we ordered tasted old and like it was sitting, even the ice cream was melted when it got to us. I don't think I'll be back for trivia night but maybe if I'm in the area I'd stop for drinks. The parking as a heads up is terrible since the Main Street is packed so we all parked at the aquatic center and walked.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved my time at Guava Beach. Service was wonderful and the environment was great. Nothing beats good food and service! Planning to come back next time we're in town

Yelp
Great place to eat! Fun place to watch football, eat and have a few beverages. The staff and friendly and helpful

Yelp
Ordered through DoorDash so can't say much about the in person restaurant experience. Ole Smokey burger was great, and seriously amazing lobster bisque!
google avatar

Catalina G.

Yelp
My family and I came to guava beach after a bike ride on the beach. We ordered the nachos to share, with margaritas. The margaritas are on the pricier side, depending on what size you get. The first margarita was great, however, the second margarita we received had a bunch of salt at the bottom of the glass. I took a sip with my straw and got a mouth full of salt. Other than that the service was all right. It's a very popular bar among the locals, and I see lots of tourists like this bar as well. It is a little on the pricier side, we only ordered nachos and a few drinks and our bill was 100+ dollars.

Yelp
I had an early dinner here with some family back in September. We sat outside on the patio. It was loud, lots of street noise, but it was pretty loud inside as well. I ordered the GB Ce-Beach-Eh! (ceviche) and the Seared Cajun Ahi. Both were so refreshing and really really tasty. I highly recommend the ceviche. We had a server who had buzzed hair dyed green, he was great! Parking can be hard, there are some lots where you can pay (which is what I did).
