Guglhupf Bake Shop

I can't say enough good things about Guglhupf. We just dropped in to see what they had as we hadn't been before. I got 2 almond croissants, 2 chocolate croissants, and 2 spinach and feta danishes to take home. The croissants are huge and absolutely perfect, but surprisingly the spinach and feta danishes were my favorite. The flavor was incredible and they are so flaky. The prices were so good as well. I recently moved to the area and almond croissants at my local bakery were double the cost and not as big or delicious. They really know what they're doing at Guglhupf. The person behind the counter was very nice and personable as well. Can't wait to come back and find a new favorite thing!

So happy to see this spot reopened after the flooding and looking better than ever!! Super clean, organized and great staff. The manager Justin always is so kind and the wait time even when there is a line is always very short. Highly recommended the cinnamon schnecke! And the chocolate chip cookie of course. The bread can be sliced as well - I get the merkhorn which is 75% rye.

Really like the big restaurant in Durham, but this little place is great add! It’s so convenient in the morning for a cup of coffee with a wonderful bun, croissant or tart! great service! such friendly guys working! The coffee is made quickly and very tasty! It's just a pity that they don't have at least a few tables outside.

Fantastic bakery with a huge selection of sweet and savory items, plus a nice coffee bar. There’s a bit of indoor and outdoor seating but I usually go for taking home goodies. I appreciate that they have challahs too. Recommend going in the mornings on weekdays, the line is never that bad.

Delicious fresh bakery. Good atmosphere. I'm always on the lookout for a good croissant, and this was pretty good! Best I've had in chapel Hill for sure. The facility is very clean and hip/modern with a vintage style. The bread harkens back to a simpler time with quality ingredients and friendly service. Try the ham and cheese Pretzel!!

So many options for sweets/bakery items, great service!! We told ourselves we weren’t gonna get any treats and we just wanted coffee… *Best oatmeal cookie my boyfriend’s ever had - and he’s an oatmeal cookie connoisseur. We’re from out of town and I’m glad we chose this spot to stop at!

LOVE THIS PLACE SOOOOO MUCH!!! Best chai latte of all time, baristas are so fye, chill atmosphere that’s very community oriented!! No kidding i talk about the chai latte every day, i’ve lit had dreams about this drink. go to this cafe and tip good i swear it’s amazing.

I love making this pit stop after TJs! It's a beautiful space, great customer care (and recommendations) and the best bread and pastries in Chapel Hill. I'm so glad that they opened this spot so more folks can enjoy the bread. It makes it so much easier to stop in for a loaf.

I finally came to check out this location as it got flooded and closed for a while. In full disclosure, I had only visited the one in Durham and that one is huge with a full menu and bakery. This is more of a coffee, pastry, small shop with a few extra store items for purchase on the side. I came in for coffee and walked out with a bag full of treats so be warned. Their breads and pastries will entice you to buy more. It wasn't too busy when I was there and service was great. Definitely recommend you stop by and check it out.

We came on a Saturday morning around 11am. It was busy but not too packed. We didn't have to wait in line for too long. There were lots of beautiful and yummy baked goods: muffins, breads, donuts, etc. We had a pumpkin pastry, a jelly filled donut and a blueberry scone. My favorite was the pumpkin pastry I also had the s'mores latte with almond milk. My friend had the mocha latte with oak milk. It was a great place for a Saturday meet up with friends. There was limited seating - we grabbed a stool in the corner. My friend mentioned how they used to have tables and chairs outside but they didn't anymore.

I feel as if I've been handing out glowing reviews too readily as of late. Maybe I need to patronize more mediocre places. That process won't begin with Guglhupf, however, which is far from mediocre. I stopped by the Chapel Hill location in search of fresh bread and was really impressed with the selection. They had sweet loaves (got one with figs, and it's been great with goat cheese and/or jelly), savory loaves, sandwich bread, pretzels, croissants, and more. Counter staff were friendly, and prices aren't as high as you'd think. About the only downside is that there isn't much room for dine in. Otherwise, das ist very much gut.

I came on a Saturday morning and parking was a bit chaotic but the line went fast and the chai latte was so good. Also got a cheese danish which was really good- almost $5 so pretty expensive in my opinion but this is more of a special occasion place than an every week visit. It's a cute little shop and there is also outdoor seating. It usually always pretty busy.

Great food! Terrific baked goods! Decent coffee! So WHY 3 stars?! I have been here a few times and noticed that when ordering their version of a ham and cheese croissant (can't recall the name off the top of my head) it is NEVER heated or warmed - ugh - this totally distracts from the overall experience and quality of their baked goods. I mean, I realize you guys are crazy busy, and have a fantastic product, but still, really!?! I would be happy to wait an extra three minutes to have it warmed up. No, I really, really would. The coffee is nice and I would recommend it as well. The ambience is typical for coffee shop/bakery (cosy, delightful smells, and visually appealing). Everyone working there is really nice and works hard to move the line along.

I love Guglhupf, their selection of pastries is never lacking and they are always made to perfection! This time I got the spinach feta danish and carrot cake sweetbread, as well as the shamrock matcha. I wouldn't recommend the shamrock matcha, the minty flavor was really artificial and reminded me of toothpaste. Definitely didn't blend well with the matcha. I loved the pastries though, the spinach feta was crispy but soft on the inside, and I loveddd the flavor combination (zucchini, carrots and and walnuts) in the carrot cake. The frosting on top was delish too! Seating is pretty limited inside but there are a few tables outside. Definitely more of a grab and go spot but I will always be coming back here!!

As others mentioned, it was a bit busy, but we were in and out of the line quickly. A great selection of pastries, breads and tarts. We had the cheese danish which was very light and flaky.

I make sandwiches for the family a few times a year. When I do, it's a pivotal meal and we want a delicious sandwich. With that being said, the bread (in my opinion) is a star component. In the past, we've been fortunate to utilize a wholesale bakery - but for a variety of reasons that just isn't an option moving forward. I've visited the flagship location in Durham (many years ago), but couldn't remember if bread was on the menu. No worries, it is. I opted for the sandwich loaf which is cut to order, if you'd like. The interior is light and airy. The exterior has a chewy texture which isn't overly tough. As is, is great with a good quality butter. Looking forward to trying with other applications. Additionally, the family enjoyed a danish which we thought was fantastic - flaky exterior and a pleasantly sweet interior. Service - respectful and knowledgeable. Bakery: 4.51

We celebrated a birthday today with cake from here. The cake was beautifully decorated and adorned with pieces of fruit. The cake is dense and decadent. It's mouth watering, melts in your mouth, magnificent, kind of chocolate mousse cake with a thin layer of raspberry layered in. The pictures should explain how decadent this cake.

I rarely get to Chapel Hill (traffic!!), but when I do go further than Wegman's, it's usually to Trader Joe's and this mini-Guglhupf. A shadow of it's older sibling, nonetheless, they are able to make a quick coffee and bread something to look forward to and savor. When I first came to this place, the outdoor area was just a concrete pad, and the tables wobbled horribly. There was little shade, that I recall. Now, there is nicely built decking, wooden tables, and loads of umbrellas. They have planted grasses and flowers around the area, so, yes, it's a sidewalk beside a parking lot, it's also a place to enjoy that well-made coffee drink and one of their signature fantastic baked items. How could they improve? Offer a way to re-heat breads for immediate consumption. Doesn't have to be much - microwave, broiler, whatever, just a way to get the cheese gooey again on that wonderful danish!

I went to Guglhupf on a Saturday morning-lunch, and there was a line almost out the door! Luckily, I needed that time to decide on what I wanted because everything looked amazing. Their pastries are beautiful. They have loaves of day-old bread available at a 40% discount and I will definitely grab some soon. They have a small seating area outside and in their store, but (in store) it was pretty messy with crumbs- I assume a kid was eating a flaky danish or croissant there. The service was great (and fast) despite the long line- everyone was super friendly, which was wonderful.

Popped into Guglhupf Bake Shop after searching madly for a cool lounge/ beer garden. We got mixed up with the locations and didn't realize that the other location was the beer garden. The glass case was nearly empty by the time of our visit. I got the Cinnamon Schnecke. It was a tasty afternoon trip and satisfied my sweet tooth. It's full of cinnamon and a good size/portion. I hope to try the beer garden the next time I visit the area. I would definitely come back to this location but would like to return earlier in the day to see what the full glass case has in it. Chai latte and anything form their baked goods. Chai latte can be quite sweet. But you can't go wrong with a drip coffee either. We love their freshly baked bread and any of their pastries

Guglhupf is located near Trader Joe's in a plaza with collection of other shops. At the moment it's grab-and-go only with no indoor seating. There is a small outdoor patio. I arrived midday Sunday and there were a good number of customers but it wasn't overly crowded. If you're interested in their baked goods, hop in line so you can peruse the baked goods case. Looking at their website, it looks like they have a bake schedule if you're looking for a particular bread and/or you can order in advance online and select your location to pick-up. If you're interested in a drink, the menu is located near the entrance and you order at the register. We tried (these 4 items came out to ~$19): * Red pepper & olive focaccia: SO GOOD! Definitely recommend toasting it. The outside was crisp and the inside texture was springy. At home I paired it with a sunny side up egg and it was delicious. * Cherry & cheese danish: The cherry and cheese paired well together. The cherry flavor brought a little bit of tartness and the cheese was a savory note that both worked to lift the pastry taste to be balanced and not too sweet. * Latte (12 oz): solid! The service was relatively quick too. * Vanilla Latte (16 oz): This wasn't my drink, but the review was that it was good. At the register, you can choose from a wide (10+) variety of flavors. Service was efficient and friendly. My only wish is that they had more savory baked goods! Could be that I need to come earlier in the day. Will definitely be back to treat myself to a delightful baked good and/or check out their bigger location (bakery, cafe, and biergarten) in Durham.

Guglhupf is gorgeous energy. Bake shops are a hit or miss. THIS IS A HIT!! I know it's good because I ate my food cold and I would come back again. Veggie gallet : egg, onion, cheese, mushroom veggie gallet was so good. I know it was good because I was still stuffing my face while it was cold. It was rich in flavor. simple yet filled with texture and ingredients. This was a winner. Cheese and cheese danish. This is the best danish I've ever had. I don't think I ever want a danish that's not from here. It was like a croissant. So flakey. With a glaze. The perfect amount of sweetness. PERFECT EVEN amount of cheese and cherry jam. I don't even like cherry. BUT THIS?? Incredible vibes. I barley took a picture before realizing I was half way done with it. Unlike any danish I've ever tried. Oh because it was the BEST danish I've ever had. Thank you guglhupf For great vibes and great desert. They've mastered the sweet and savory!! I can't wait to come back and try more.

Not as extensive as the main Gulglhupf bakery in Durham but a nice option for pastries and coffee for this part of Chapel Hill. After a day of exploring various parts of Chapel Hill, we stopped in mid-afternoon for some treats. They were kind of picked over but we still enjoyed our creampuff and savory roll. They also had several types of breads and gift items. It's always better to patronize local businesses than chain grocery stores, in my opinion.

I've eaten at Guglhupf in Durham for lunch several times, but this was my first time coming to the bakery in Chapel Hill. We were very pleased as the bake shop was clean, offered a variety of baked breads, pastries, and desserts. They also serve a sell coffees. We got the cherry-cheese danish, orange cranberry scone, and a pretzel ball. All three were delicious, and we were happy to find a scone that's not too dry. Prices were very reasonable as we paid $8 for three baked goods. Would highly recommend! Makes for a perfect treat and nice to be centrally located to so many other places.

The best bakery I've been to in all of NC - just wow. I had the chocolate croissant and cheese danish (got some other goods for later). The croissant was perfect and the cheese danish absolutely delicious. I also got the Vietnamese cold brew which is one of the tastiest I've had. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Consistently good. I've visited a few times now and their products are consistently tasty and service is friendly. I usually get a half-caf latte and ask for no foam, they make it well and I'm always happy with they way it comes out. My only suggestion would be they leave the wooden stir sticks out for customers so that they don't use plastic spoons instead.

Wow! This place is a MUST stop! It took me back to when I lived in Germany (3 years while in the Army). I spent over $40 on my first visit and was not disappointed. The Brezelstick with Cheese reminded me of a similar treat that I used to purchase at the hauptbahnhof (German train station). It is a delicious cheese bread that is a must have. I also purchased several bakery items and danishes and all were enjoyed. I will go out of my way to make it back to Guglhupf Bakery

So heard the hype about Guglhupf, even before moving here a few years ago. Experienced it's great following when picking up a fruit tart on Saturday morning. Quite a line of people getting their coffee and pastry. The tart was a little different than what I had expected, made with a cream filling versus custard, but lighter and still really good. Also bought a rustic loaf of 'sourdough' like bread, a berliner (jelly donut), cream puff and cinnamon schneke, which wasn't as sweet as I had anticipated and actually preferred that. I'm only taking a star off for not having mohntorte or mohnstrudel, a pastry I've had many many times in Germany.

Very convenient Chapel Hill location. I ordered treats online for a friend's birthday and everything about it was simple and convenient. More importantly, the pastries were delicious. I myself have tried several goodies and my favourites are the fruit danishes and fruit tarts! I also enjoy the chocolate ganache tarte, which has a bit of a salty/sweet combo thing. The only thing I have found lacking amongst the various things I have tried is the slightly gummy linzer cookie and dryish almond pastry. Everything else is top notch and I will be coming back repeatedly for my favourites.

We stopped in to grab some pastries and this place was so cool! The bakery had assorted drinks, pastries, and snacks. The lady who helped us was super nice! We got a personal fruit tart, coconut macaroons, and an almond pastry. All were beautifully made and taste equally as good. The staff are friendly, the food is beautiful, and it's such a cool bakery. I had eaten in the cafe too when I was in high school so I can't wait to come back and have a meal here!

I was so happy that Guglhupf decided to come to this part of the Triangle! This tiny version of their Durham outpost just serves coffee, pastries and breads--but that's ideal for this shopping center. There are a few seats inside, but you can also take it to go. In the winter, their hot chocolate really hits the spot. They don't open until 8am, so it's not ideal for the early birds, but they are open until after dinner in case you need a dessert.

Really cool inside with a ton of amazing pastries and artisanal bread options. They also have coffee and other drinks but I've never tried them. Regarding the croissants and pastries that I have tried, they are delicious. I have, however, gone towards the end of the day and found the baked pastries to be a bit stale, the chocolate ones were still great. Parking is not usually a problem but because of the nearby Trader Joe's, it can get full. The hours are tricky since it's an 8-6PM so if you're planning on going after work (say you get out at 5PM), you'll find yourself with limited options as they run out of product. Their pricing isn't terrible either, and their staff is very nice. However, my biggest problem and truthfully why I sometimes choose to forgo visiting is their painfully awkward tipping system. At the end of the transaction, you are asked if you want to leave a tip - aloud, in public. I understand the importance of tipping but since the entire transaction takes two minutes and only consist of me stating my order and them putting it in a bag, I don't really think a tip is necessary. I would prefer if they just flip the tablet around and let me subtly choose the tip amount - please stop putting customers on the spot.

This Guglhupf is in a convenient location and has fast and friendly service. It's a nice place to grab a quick tasty treat like a pastry or dessert and coffee. My only wish would be that they have an even larger assortment of food items to choose from. I have enjoyed everything I've tried, but my favorite is the croissants.

My favorite bakery in the Triangle now has a satellite location in Chapel Hill. I stopped in on opening day and they are selling coffee and the breads and pastries you'd get from their bakery. They're supposed to roll out more stuff in the future with more food options cooked on site. It won't be the main restaurant but parking here should be much better than Durham.

Secondary location of the Durham staple. It's newly opened, so there are definite kinks that will need to be ironed out. I stopped in randomly on my out of Trader Joe's, and there was a short line on an early Sunday morning. The bread cases were fully stocked, but the section for cookies/pastries was mostly empty. The counter service is a bit wonky because people want the line to move forward while also being able to see all of their option before ordering. This leads to a bit of a cluster with customers trying to pace the counter area without room to do so. Also, table seating inside is very, very limited. I wouldn't go with a group or small children and expect to eat on site. I tried an almond schneke, a ham and cheese bretzel, and an olive focaccia. Given the baking equipment, it appears they do make some things on site, but the store was missing that fresh baked smell that comes from bread. Maybe from the newness? All three of the items that I ordered were delicious, and I would definitely order them again. I also had my eye on the walnut raisin loaf too. The biggest letdown was my chai latte. Lukewarm, super milky, and minimal chai flavor. The person in front of me also used up the coffee carafe and the staff looked a bit frazzled and put off in refilling it. For the digest version, I'd come back for the food only, but would plan to eat it elsewhere.

This is the second Guglhupf location after the flagship Durham cafe. Located in the same shopping center as Trader Joes in Chapel Hill, Guglhupf is a small bakery with a few seats inside and out. You order at the counter and all coffee is served in to-go cups. Their pretzel rolls are very tasty as well as the apple torte. Sometimes they offer day-old bread at discounted pices. I have ordered both a latte here and bread to take home. There is minimal seating and different from the Durham location because there is not hot food cafe or large dining space. If you are looking for authentic German rolls, breads and pastries you can find them here. If I can't make it here, I just go to Lidl.

I'm so glad that Guglhupf's bakery has expanded to this Chapel Hill location! I've visited it twice in the past few weeks, and both times were great experiences. I'm a long-time fan of Guglhupf, and particularly of their baked items. On my trips to this location, I tried several items: the cheese brezel, the seasonal Danish (which was slightly different on each visit - the first being a rich key lime, and the second having more of a lemon custard taste - both delicious!), a chocolate tart, chocolate-dipped elephant ear, and an apple danish. The cheese brezel was a perfect afternoon snack - salty from the parmesan and what I'm guessing may be gruyere, crunchy from the coarse salt and poppy seeds, and just the right amount of chewiness to the brezel itself. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. The danishes were light, flaky, and buttery. I personally preferred the seasonal danish over the apple, but both were very tasty. The chocolate tart has a nice depth of chocolate flavor and because it's so rich, you really only need a couple of bites. The atmosphere itself is pretty nice, if a little sterile. It is clean and modern with a few small tables in the front and a few more outside. It lacks the coziness of the main Guglhupf location, so I think this will simply be a carry-out spot for me. The prices are average. For an assortment of eight dessert pastries, we paid $27.

Food is usually good but moving forward I will opt to drive all the way out to the Durham location in order to avoid interacting with this rude staff. If this is your first stop in the morning be prepared to have your day off to a rough start. You're not treated like a paying patron but a huge inconvenience to their day.

So yummy! I had scrambled eggs which was a larger than expected serving. Overall great food and a wonderful space to sit and eat!

A smaller set up than their Durham location, I love the way the staff here help me find just what I'm looking for. I've never been disappointed by a single baked good that I bought here.

If you are looking for a delicious cake at a relatively affordable price, look no further than this bakery. We got the Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Torte (see pictures) and it was both visually pleasing and tasted great! The tartness of the top layer of Raspberry helped balance out the sweetness of the other layers. We got it to go due to COVID so the service was great although the interactions were limited. Overall, if you are a cake fan, this is the place to be and I would highly recommend you try all the cakes on the menu!

Amazing pastries! I bought a rhubarb tart/cake here for Mother's Day and it was a HUGE hit!

I think I was too generous with my first review, possibly because they're still better than most places in the area. But the pastries here are cold and taste a bit stale. Cherry cheese danish - 2.5 stars Eaten cold this is probably cafeteria standard. Unfortunately I didn't have an oven toaster so I heated this up in the microwave for 30 seconds. It's better warm but the pastry is just too dry and flavourless. After it cooled down I wish I hadn't bought it. The filing is good but can't rescue this danish.

I usually go to the bake shop in Durham, but the one in Chapel Hill is just as great. We went here after a cycle class, and we loved it. The staff is extremely welcoming and there's an assortment of baked goods from strudels to macaroons. I'm a personal fan of the spiced chocolate chip muffin and lavender latte. If you're looking for a place to grab coffee and catch up with a friend, I would come here! If you're a student or need to get work done, I wouldn't recommend studying here unless you are fine with a really small table for a workspace.

Great bread and delicious baked products generally. Time to have the servers stop asking for tips when just serving regular customers not having coffee on site. It's mostly a shop at the end of the day - Trader Joe's servers aren't asking for tips.

I enjoy the pastries here very much. I love the elephant ears dipped in chocolate. But the cream puff was the best!

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is just a the bakery part of the Guglhupf restaurant in Durham. They have both bread and sweets, but I go for anything sweet pretty much 100% of the time. I've had the cream puff before, and it was the best cream puff of my life so I ordered it again. I also tried another chocolatey cake that I don't remember the name of, but it was equally as delicious. To top it off, the workers there are cheery and quite patient with me as I tried to narrow down what I wanted, which makes a huge difference.

This is the bakery-only arm of the well-known Guglhupf restaurant and cafe based in Durham. I was excited to hear about its opening; Chapel Hill can definitely use more bakeries/cafes! I stopped in yesterday after gathering up enough courage and patience to deal with the death trap that is the parking lot outside of Trader Joe's. Yes, this bakery shares its lot with the grocery store which makes it very tough to find a spot and not hit someone. Guglhupf Bake Shop is inbetween McPherson Cleaners and Winestore. and has a few spots right out front. Upon walking in, there were a few stools immediately to my right, but they were taken (of course). To the left was a coffee fixings bar, including straws, sugar, stirrers, etc. as well as the beverage menu on the wall. Straight ahead is the line that snakes around parallel to the glass case filled with treats and the register. To echo another review, standing in line gets a tad confusing - people are unsure about how to view the pastries and breads and whether or not they can bypass someone waiting on bread if they only want to order coffee or a pastry. I was a little confused because a woman in front of me was waiting on her bread to finish up, but I kind of only wanted a pastry and beverage. Was I supposed to bypass? Did I have to wait for someone to acknowledge me at the breads, the first station? I think having separate ordering lines or signs would help customers to navigate better. I decided to wait and order a brioche bun for $1.15. Six go for $6.50. The woman who greeted me was cheerful and outgoing! I saw the Berliner pastry in the nearby case which is a sugar-coated doughnut filled with jelly; after I asked some questions, the woman proceeded to tell me that it was only served on Saturdays, is very popular amongst regulars, and had raspberry filling. That convinced me to get one! She didn't ask me if I wanted something else; I probably would have gotten another pastry if she had...not that I needed it! There was also a pastry of the day filled with coconut and pineapple - very tropical. Otherwise, there was a decent variety of sweets and bread loaves whose prices rival those at Whole Foods or other specialty markets. When I was ready to pay, I ordered an iced Vietnamese coffee cold brew. Being a German bakery, I was surprised to see "Vietnamese" on the menu. Furthermore, only one drink from what I can remember was listed in German - milchkaffee - which is a simple cafe au lait. I kind of wish that all of the drinks were written in German or that at least a couple of items were more inspired, assuming Germany has something like that to offer. I would definitely appreciate more authentic menu offerings! In regards to flavor and taste, the coffee was lacking. It was made well, but to me, Vietnamese coffee should be strong and almost bitter. The brioche bun was good with its soft and buttery texture and melt-in-your-mouth feel. The Berliner, when I first bit into it, was unexpected and a little worrisome - there was no jelly, and I thought, "oh no! They forgot to fill it!" - so I took another bite, and that idea continued. These were not small bites, mind you. The donut is large and in charge. Finally, with the third bite, I hit gold! The raspberry jelly was soothing and sweet. I probably would not have been able to tell it was raspberry versus another red fruit, but it was good with the sugary outside. Bottom line: This cafe has some decent offerings pastry- and bread-wise, but I am looking for that wow factor. I would not bank on being able to sit inside, so prepare for takeout orders only. I think multiple visits are warranted to find your favorites!

We love this place! Live so close by we can cycle here, and thank goodness so we can burn off the calories we eat there!! We have each had the bollener balls, cookies, coconut macroons, and lattes- everything is so tasty, so fresh. Everyone working there is friendly, helpful, and so quick- like they are prepared for a mad rush at any moment- which probably happens!! Tip- if you are looking to sit inside, the tables do flip pretty fast- so be patient. And if outside is your presence- we always see tables free!

say the name five times fast, nice gamut of treats, want to try them all wife and I ordered 2 danish's, blueberry and cream cheese, total came to about $6. Both danish's were nice and flaky, cream cheese center was sweet on mine and the blueberries on my wifes tasted fresh but also sugary(the good kind). they had a pretty decent assortment of treats available, considering my proximity to the shop I would only be visiting when stopping by the performance bike or trader joes in the shopping center but I will definitely be visiting on those occasions.

Excellent bakery. My wife and child go there a lot. WE love the eclectic mix of traditional flours. I'm not a fan of sweets, but there are many delicious breads there as well.
