8 Portland Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes for Book Lovers - Eater Portland

"Fans of The Princess Bride can spot references to the book and movie throughout the new cafe inside Powell’s City of Books. The custom-designed wallpaper gives movie locations a local twist, and the menu offers its house-roasted coffee, Junior’s Roasted Coffee, and the choice between a spicy or savory Humperdinck (a biscuit with sausage and dipping sauces). For a morning boost, opt for the Autumn Miracle Pill, a latte with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, panela, cold brew, and salt." - April Choi

Coffee was poor. Latte shouldn't be this color. Baristas were more involved in their conversation than with their customers. My grandmother was served an ice coffee instead of an iced tea, which they rectified fortunately. Overall overpriced and poor quality. Will not be back.

These baristas are overworked and tired of the crowds 😆 . None of our drink specifications (ice in tea, splash of cream in coffee) were listened to, but based on the expressions of misery we were met with, we decided not to say anything and just enjoy the chance to sit down. It wasn’t overbearingly loud as we feared but it’s certainly not a place you can really settle into. The tea and drip coffee are average. If you really need to sit down and have a drink, it’s kind of nice, being around the books and people watching. But I’d recommend going elsewhere if you have the option.

Between the two of us, we ordered a bagel with lox (yummy), a breakfast sandwich (delicious), and the hummus (could've used more salt) and baba ganoush with pita. We also ordered an Americano (meh) and a honey lavender latte (delightful!). It was a nice spot to chill and regain some energy in the middle of book shopping.

Grabbed a matcha for my train ride from Guilders and was pleased by the customer service and speediness of the drink production. After ordering I turned around to look at a bookshelf and barely read a few titles before my drink was ready. It was a tasty and exactly what I wanted!

Ordering from here feels like walking into a bad sketch comedy show about the pretentious Brooklyn coffee shop. You can be condescending but you can't do that and have bad coffee. I'm sorry if you hate your job but I promise I don't have anything to do with that. Please don't take it out on me

This café is in the famous Powells bookstore. I recommend the books. I ordered a quad shot cappuccino with almond milk and got it in an itty bitty cup for $7. A large, no frills coffee is $5, no refills. I lounged and read part of a book with my mate. There's a lot of space for working in a semi quiet place with someone or without. If you're after an experience, I highly recommend the bookstore. If you want coffee, though, I recommend you to go to a coffee shop, unless you don't mind paying a tourist mark up.

Coffe was good, well toasted bagel, but a scrap of butter for $6? When I asked for the cream cheese since my reciept said cream cheese, they said sorry, it's either cream cheese or butter. Lol. Most expensive bagel in the world. No thanks.

This cafe is located inside the iconic Powell book store on one of the corners. The atmosphere inside is pretty unique and charming. They have plenty of window sitting and great spots for people watching. The large windows give plenty of lighting. One can grab a book from the store and sit there for hours. About the coffee, which is darn good as well. I tried their Cortado and Cappuccino and both were spot on. It’s certainly worth coming here whether you are coming to Powells or not.

Yelp
Last Thursday, I found myself at a Slamlandia Poetry Open Mic at the Guilder Cafe. It started at 6pm with an hour of open mic poets, then transitioned to the featured poet spotlight that evening, Nisha Patel. I was in Powell's City of Books and had stopped inside the cafe to see if I could charge my phone (there's only 1 outlet on one of the walls). I ended up getting a drink. The barista was friendly. I grabbed a seat at one of the tables. There are a couple of seating options - various tables, cushioned chairs, and like a tiered bleacher situation. All of a sudden, there were announcements that the event was happening. It was a free event, so I decided to stick around. There are very talented poets in Portland and, as an outsider observing, a strong community among them. It was cool to see and listen. So in addition to good drink and tasty food, Guilder Cafe has interesting happenings that take place. Another reason to love Powell's!

Yelp
I cannot comment on the food yet, but every drink I've had from Guilder Cafe has been delicious. Even in the dead of winter they offer three types of iced tea! Mad props. The light is perfect, the seating is plentiful. I chose the wood risers, which had pillows that were just right. A cheerful place to bring the books I am thinking of buying, rehydrate and take a moment. Next time, I'm trying one of their delicious-looking cocktails. When you go in, check out the amazing Princess Bride wallpaper by local artist and maker.

Yelp
The chai was amazing! Its so creamy with the right blend of sweetness and spice. The cafe itself has a lot of seating but not too many outlets to charge devices. It can get a little loud but it's a nice space to be in.

Yelp
This cute little coffee shop is located inside of Powell's bookstore. Husband ordered a latte and got a hot tea for me. What a nice convenience to have a coffee shop within reach of the books. They also had a nice selection of pastries and other foods available for purchase.

Yelp
Every single yogurt in store today has mold growing on the berries :| the server had a hard time giving me a new one because they all had mold. The expiration date was okay but the berries were not. Not thrilled but at least it was only $4.

Yelp
This cafe offers premium coffee! And it's locally roasted!! So much better than if they were another big chain shop. They do have a food menu, which is a huge deal considering it's extra effort on their end. What more could you want from a cafe affiliated-adjoined to a phenomenal bookstore? Plenty of seating, plenty of options, this is a 5 star place folks!

Yelp
The staff was lovely and helpful. The coffee was good but quite expensive (but that might just be Portland) really limited food selection of pre prepped foods. Come here for the vibes not for a mind blowing breakfast.

Yelp
This cafe would be a perfect place to spend hours doing work and reading if it weren't for the incompetence of the staff to make a cup of tea with milk. The barista poured hot water, put in the tea bag and immediately poured in milk. I let my teabag steep in lukewarm milky water for ten minutes before asking them to remake the weak tea and add the milk after the steeping was finished. Manager Lou refused and said it was their policy of steeping tea. The other reviews are correct; the prices are extraordinary given that it's a tourist spot but the product and the service is terrible. There are so many cooler coffee shops and bookstores to hang out at.

Yelp
This is the new cafe inside Powell's Books on Burnside. It's fully vegetarian with some vegan options (I wish more) and unique seating options. Peruse the store, grab a book, then go order something yummy! I got the Savory Humperdinck which is a house made biscuit, field roast apple sage sausage, white sesame seeds, basil, and tomato basil hummus (which is so good and I wish they gave you more!). I didn't know what to expect as I'd never had a Humperdinck previously, but it was so good. Try it out!

Yelp
The cafe is nice, but the building's restrooms have dividers so high that if you sit on the toilet, you will be showing everything off to anyone who walks into the room. It's truly bizarre.

Yelp
This is a mixed review. I still love the book store with a passion. This is a review of the coffee shop. Their drinks are a rip off. I paid $3.75 for an iced tea. It was very small and they don't do refills. Sigh, no longer my favorite date destination.
