Eater Critic Robert Sietsema’s 15 Best Dishes of 2021 | Eater NY

"Their chicken tabaka — a splayed, flattened bird borrowed from Georgian tradition — arrives with crisp skin and an overwhelming garlic punch that’s both intoxicating and utterly delicious; at this Central Asian spot the garlic makes you pleasantly woozy." - Robert Sietsema

The Best NYC Dishes of 2021, So Far | Eater NY

"Normally served in a bamboo steamer, the Uzbek Turkic dumplings called manti at Homecrest’s Gulchatay can be ordered deep fried, which does wonderful things to the pumpkin version — making the dumplings crisp and juicy and concentrating the orange squash’s sweetness (and probably obliterating any health benefits of choosing pumpkin)." - Robert Sietsema

Great place with amazing food. Nice ambiance and decor. Music was not deafeningly loud like in some other places and had a variety of styles and genres, not just exclusively the native uzbek tunes. And the best thing is definitely the food. It was simply great. I loved their cold soup Kuksi so much that we even took one to go. Hope they still offer it. Plov was very good as well, with an ideal amount of oils and spices, very tender meat, and perfectly cooked rice. We also ordered a mixed shish kebab, and it all was prepared amazingly well: juicy and tender. I highly recommend this place, and we will definitely be back.

First time here. I wanted to order the Filet Mignon, but found out that it needed to be pre-ordered at least 24 hours in advance. So we tried other things. The lamb dumplings were delicious, like the Shanghai soup dumplings, but bigger, and more delicious, and available with lamb meat stuffing. It’s better than any other Uzbeki or Turkish or Mediterranean restaurants we tried before. The fried carp has tiny bones in it, so be careful. But most of it are crunchy and crispy and therefore not a big problem to me. It is very lightly salted, or perhaps not at all. I like it like this. But perhaps for others who are used to the American fish and chips, this may not be salty enough. The lamb ribs kebab is really very good. I wouldn’t mind ordering two of this next time. The Lagman, which is a pulled noodles in soup dish. I must say, again, this lagman is the best I’ve had compared to other Uzbeki restaurants. Firstly, it has nearly zero oil or fat, unlike other restaurants. Secondly the seasoning is really perfectly spot on. Will definitely return for their chef’s specials, all of which needed to be preordered in advance.

Google
This restaurant had the best Manti I have ever tried! Honestly, I just came from there and had to right away write a review. From the service (the two girls, I believe her name was Fatima and the other not sure) but they were so friendly, always smiling, and kind. The other lady, I believe manager or owner was also very sweet. The food was great, shashlik top notch. I really liked everything, and that’s very hard to find in Brooklyn especially for our types of cuisine. A lot of other Uzbek and similar cultural places tend to always have an attitude, and some bad service or food. But this one gave me a feeling of back home. Yes it is little pricey like 20$ for shashlik, but I really enjoyed it and will be coming back !

Google
Gulchatay is pleasantly delicious with a wide variety to choose from. Meats, fish, various shish kebabs and manti. A special note about a very pleasant service, simply outstanding. All the questions answered, nicely set up and presented. Lastly, a note to the chief- Everything was delicious. Keep it up and see you again! Enjoy!

Google
Restaurant Gulchatay is a true hidden gem! From the moment you walk in, you feel the warm and welcoming atmosphere. This isn’t just a place to eat — it’s a place where you’re greeted like a valued guest. The staff is polite, attentive, and never intrusive, yet always nearby if you need anything. It’s clear they genuinely care about your comfort. The food is beyond praise — delicious, beautifully presented, and made with love. Every dish feels like a little celebration of flavor. Cozy, tasty, and homey — we’ll definitely be coming back!

Google

Google
Middle Asian restaurant that has been on my bucket list for a while. Not disappointed. All dishes we ordered were well cooked and garnished with fresh cilantro. Our servants were very polite and friendly. Despite of the fact that my fried carp fish was served later than other dishes, everything else was served fine. Spoiler- no wine or beer wasn’t allowed, but no charge was placed if you bring your own bottle. Enjoyed a friendly atmosphere there: had no loud music and had comfortable seats. Definitely worth to step for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
The food was exceptional, with a genuine Kazakhstan influence. Despite being short-staffed that day, the service remained impeccable, and the chef delivered an outstanding meal.

Yelp
Went here one evening. There was another table with a small group. The restaurant was spacious and quiet. Only one waiter (assuming this is the wife). The waiter asked if we spoke Russian or English. We said English. Menu was fairly large with a good selection of dishes. We had to ask the waiter to explain some of the dishes. My wife saw pictures of a particular dish and requested it after the waiter explained it was the Uzbek Plov. Rice dish was enough for two to share. The waiter then asked if we wanted a salad or dumplings to go with the rice. We chose salad, which turned out to be Achchiq chuchuk. Didn't realize it was a separate dish; which goes well with the Uzbek Plov (according to the waiter). We also ordered the Shurpa soup (forgot to take a pic) and stuffed mushrooms. The salad came first. It was flavorful (savory, salty, and refreshing). Next came the Shurpa soup. Home style soup that hit the spot on a chilly evening. The braised beef was delicious and melted in your mouth. Not salty or bland; soup was just right. The Uzbek Plov came afterwards. That dish was divine. It had a lot of flavor, the shredded chicken was not over cooked, easy to chew. We were wondering where the stuffed mushroom was, but it finally came. Not bad, but I probably wouldn't get it again. I would definitely get the Uzbek Plov and Shurpa soup again. Won't be sharing the soup next time! Although the salad was yummy, I can't justify spending $12+ for 3 simple ingredients. But of course food usually tastes better when someone else makes it for you, haha. The waiter was very kind and checked on us. The only issue was at the end when we wanted to pay. So, there was an old man sitting in the back of the restaurant by himself. He was drinking alcohol by himself and then the Chef comes out with a big plate of food and placed it on the table and sat next to the old man. Ahh, so it turns out to be the dad of the chef (they look alike!). The waiter was then eating dinner with them; her back facing us. Now, of course this felt a little awkward for us both because we didn't want to interrupt their dinner but also wanted to pay and leave. She knew we were ready to pay but she decided to sit, eat and talk with the two guys. Besides that point, I would come back again to try out the other dishes on the menu.

Yelp
So I wouldn't come to this place again ! Their services isn't bad but when you ask for tap water they purposely try to push bottled water onto your table it's annoying. I asked for tap give tap... I'm well aware of the dangers and possible smells of tap water no lessons needed. Then the prices for The portions isn't justified. The shish kabobs are very small , flavor is good really good actually but the pieces are just look like they were sliced in half of what the portion should be. The potato chips were really good as well surprisingly since more are blend and greasy but here they are good. The cilantro onions and red cabbage definitely had a fresh and good flavor on them as well. But from previous ownership the portion size went to by a lot you can se in my previously posted pictures. The Gulchatay salad which is really a glorified Caesar salad and nothing special at all for 21$ they gotta be kidding on that. And the pale chicken that my friend and I agreed smelled and was steaming from the microwave. Not sure if they think the patrons are idiots but the chicken was definitely microwaved . We left the place fully hungry and went straight to another food spot after. If you aren't a big eater this place isn't that bad for you but many more good spot put there to try( sashlik UZ/ and Omar khayam to name a few )

Yelp
We discovered something very new and pleasant. We went with friends to a wonderful and cozy restaurant with excellent and not intrusive service and chic cuisine. A cozy and bright room, the dishes that we ordered and served to our table were fantastically served in a beautiful format and very tasty. Salads, soups, samsa, manti in the style of Samarkand tradition, lagman in Uighur and Dungan style were made from good and fresh vegetables, with fragrant spices. Fans of tradition and delicious food from Central Asia should come and try everything for themselves. Thank you very much, I have not tasted dishes from my childhood so tasty and high quality for a long time. Special thanks to Sabina for the warmth and hospitality, glad to meet you, we will be friends with you. We will definitely come back to you.

Yelp
4/5 for meat appetizers, but 3/5 for entrees The meat filings for their appetizers are seriously good, but the baby-portions and jerky-like roasted lamb from the entrees might make you reconsider ordering the mains and just going for the small bites instead? Meat Samsa ($4 for 2): I've had a lot of samsas in this area but these are the best so far. Meat inside is semi chunky and not grounded up like minced meat, and the filling is super juicy beef/lamb with some onions and lots of spices. Soo good. Pastry is flakey and crispy, though not too many noticeable layers. Just perfect buttery and moist bites. Get two orders because you're not going to want to share Meat Manti ($8 for 4): oh mannn this lamb filling. Even chunkier pieces than the samsa, mixed with a lot of fattier pieces for a very satisfying bite. Bit gamey for those who can't get used to lamb. However, the skin is too thick and not soft. When I got this for takeout, the skin had already broken as well so all the juices leaked out. Kazan Kebob ($16): roasted lamb with baby potatoes. Description also says comes with red onion, but not with my takeout. Picture is below, but for $16, this is really laughable - there's 4 nugget sized pieces of lamb, one big potato chopped in half to yield two pieces. They're definitely not the baby potatoes I was expecting following the entree description. I also know lamb is expensive, but this portion is really astonishing for a meat entree. Lamb was reallllly dry. Mayyybe I got a batch that had been left over because the surface of the meat had hardened and you can actually see the jerky-like texture it was becoming. Which was really unfortunate because the flavor was actually quite decent. There was one lamb rib that was almost purely fat, but the meat on that bone was sooo tender and flavorful. Just that everything else was dried and hard to eat. Also really surprised that it didn't come with any bases of rice, fries, or even a salad on the side. Lagman ($8): Uzbek homemade noodles with beef with beef/vegs broth. Similar to Lanzhou noodles soup, but the soup is darker and heartier. Good soup, a bit reminiscent of Campbell's chunky beef stew actually. But not a fan of the thicker noodles that had absolutely no chew. Portion is also very very tiny for this.

Yelp
Standard fare Uzbek cuisine. Nothing outstanding to rave about, but good enough for a satisfying meal that'll remind you of home. Sun of Samarkand Salad was refreshing, with a good combo of garden veggies, pieces of beef tongue, and soy sauce. Recommend giving this a try. Tashkent salad was a good classic. Fried calamari were shockingly the highly of our meal. Who'd think an Uzbek place does calamari so well? They were not oily, soft, with just the right amount of light batter that wasn't too overwhelming (and easily pealable for those like me, who hate batter). Same goes for a shrimp skewer, which was perfectly tender and deviate. Meat Mantu were solid. Liver and lulya kebabs were delicious too. The lamb kebabs were a sad letdown. Too much fat, too chewy, barely any eatable meat. Casual atmosphere. Relaxed, mellow music playing in the background. Waiting staff were friendly and accommodating. There to serve all your needs and wishes.

Yelp
Manhattan prices for a few pieces of meat. Give me a break. Halal Bros is 100% better

Yelp
Wow! This place is amazing! My family members were warmed up by extremely welcoming service as soon as we walked in. We've ordered Plov, Samsa and Achuchuk Salad. Plov was cooked in Samarkand style which we like the most because it's not too oily, the meat was tender. Samsa comes in 2 pieces with freshly made sauce that adds up unbelievable flavor to the meat which was great too! This place is under a new ownership, we've met the owners of this beautiful restaurant who introduced their new menu, new items, the way of cooking and preparing food to their guests. You won't be treated like a regular client here, you will be treated as a dear guest who has many options of trying delicious food and family recipes. Next time we wanna try Shashlyk (kebabs) and Rib-eye steak! Thanks Dilshot and Sabina! Very nice to meet you guys!

Alex G.

Yelp
the food was amazing , the meat was so soft and the potato chips were crispy to perfection
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
The lagman had an intriguing broth that seemed to have a secret ingredient or two. There was a faint licorice vibe but I Googled and that isn't a thing. I was alone and not necessarily up for a full plov-and-samsa bender so I kept it on the lighter side with the pickled vegetables, with the highlight being green tomatoes.

Marina S.

Yelp
The food is very overpriced, one portion which is 5 cubes of meat is $17, the plate that advertise suppose to have French fries, red cabbage salad and meat, it was a spoon of salad and store bought potato chips. The meat was dry and salty. The tea pot and the tea cups they served looked very cheap. The tea pot was made of aluminum which is harmful to use. The stuff looked very unprofessional, we waited 20 min for cups. Fly was flying back and forth. For 1 and a half soup 5 shish kebab and 2 salads we pain $200. Waste of money big time. Never ever. My husband and I took our children for dinner which was very unpleasant.

Yelp
Delicious, cozy, welcoming. Food: Great menu selection with pasta dishes such as narin, besh barmak, green noodles all freshly made in house, absolute must is their manti-dumplings with meat and pumpkin very authentic I felt like I was in my grandmas house. Refreshing salads: my favorites were Tashkent and avocado salad. All the dishes were served beautifully and appetizing. Service: Attentive friendly staff. Ambiance: Warm colors, cultural accents, cozy chairs, calming background music. I'm planning to bring my friends over to have some delicious uzbek food, will recommend!

Marina K.

Yelp
Disappointing. The manager who takes the order is not too attentive, messed up the order and brought out the wrong dish. Her assistant served one entry dish at a time; too much wait time for all people in your party to be served. All dishes are oversalted. Unlikely to return.

Yelp
Wow I had a launch with my friend The salad was just FANTASTIC I have never tried something before burrata cheese /arugula/mango and raspberry and filet mignon

Yelp
Ordered delivery for family occasion. Delivery was fast, food good. The only thing Tashkent salad portion smaller than other places and tasted slightly spicy. Kabobs perfect

Yelp
This is their nasty kebabs. This has to be the worst restaurant. The kebabs look like leftover meat they werent even full sized kebabs i dont know what it was it was absolutely disgusting the fries were soggy. So unhappy I just spent $30 im starving and disgusting I literally just threw it in the garbage. Such a waste. They should be embaressed to give something like this.

Yelp
Great place excellent food. It's a bit on a pricey side but food was very flavorful. So definitely would come back

Yelp
What a great experience! The food was fresh and well seasoned, the service was impeccable and the ambiance was great. They even had old silent European movies playing giving this spot a real authentic feel....

Yelp
THE FOOD HERE IS EXQUISITE. Its like going to the city without actually going to the city. Will definitely recommend to friends & family.

Yelp
This place deserves the 5 stars in regards to its food. Everything was flavorful and the variety of different flavors was astounding. I can't eat beef so I am sure there are much better dishes that I wasn't able to try. This was my first attempt at Uzbek food and strongly recommend this place and cuisine.

Yelp
Super fantastic Rice Pilaff and Lagman (noodle soup). Excellent place to enjoy the delicious food and warm atmosphere. 100 % recommend to visit.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from Gulchatay last night and it was pretty good. Had a variety of chicken, lamb, beef kebabs, and lamb ribs. All the meat was fresh, juicy, and cooked well. I'm used to restaurants in the neighborhood delivering kebabs with "red sauce" so I was kinda disappointed when I saw none with all the meat we ordered. Delivery also took much longer then promised. Otherwise pretty decent Uzbeki restaurant.
google avatar

Karina U.

Yelp
I would give this place six stars if I could. Food is delicious. They even give complimentary achichuk salad with their amazing Plov! The service is nice and friendly! Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Janet N.

Yelp
I was going to dine here but the owner is very rude. We asked how to get a table outside and he denied us immediately because of our dog . Normally we take our dog with us and most places allow you to eat outdoors with your pet but he was just rude with the way he went about it. He could've been nicer but it's ok. I will not support this business.

Yelp
Loved to eat here with my mother, we had a good time sitting down and eating our delicious food.

Sanjar A.

Yelp
The place was empty but it took the waitress 10 minutes to bring me a bottle of water and another 10 minutes to bring me the menu. I didnt order anything and left. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Amazing, authentic Uzbek food. Loved it. If you happen to be in Brooklyn, please visit it.

Yelp
One of my favorite places! Lagman is very tasty and everything they have in there is so good. Especially suzma, this one is the best. Thank you so much for your service

Yelp
Always have an amazing time here. Amazing staff and was a pleasure meeting the owner. The food is the best in town, highlight of the day was live saxophone music. Always make memorable nights with friends at this place.

Yelp
i will begin this review by saying that I am not Uzbek and I did see a modest amount of Uzbek people picking up or dining out, I have had Uzbek food before so I have a base to compare it to, and I thought the food was just terrible, and the service was even worse As I like to do when I go to a small local place with a localized flair, I like to ask the server for his/her. recommendations , besides the fact that Eugene barely knew English, he was able to point to things on the menu after I explained exactly what I was looking for. It was after this, that the S**T SHOW began He bought my appetizers and main course (Beshbarmak is a mix of lamb and beef and apparently one of their best dishes) at the same time, Meanwhile, it took an extra 10 minutes for my friends appetizers to come out - that is just a big NO NO in the restaurant business. When I asked him to take my Beshbarmak back and keep it heated, his reply was "Its Ready Now" I will never know exactly what was in the dish, but massive amounts of flies and bugs were immediately attracted to the table once it came out. I tried a taste of it and it was so bland and the meat was of such poor quality, that I put it in my napkin and did not taste another piece. When Eugene came back, I politely told him the dish was absolutely terrible and asked if he could substitute it with anything else (it was one of the highest priced items, so I was willing to substitute with something for even half the price). His reply was - "You Ordered it - we cant change it", which once again, is not a reply you give to a customer He passed the table several times, only to see my uneaten food with the bugs flying around, and did not once think to correct the situation. When I asked for the bill, he asked me if I wanted to have my uneaten food wrapped up to go home, so it just tells me that he was clueless. In this area of Brooklyn, there are plenty of Uzbek and Middle Eastern restaurants available, and its safe to assume the service is much better. For full transparency, I had the kebab as an appetizer and it was fair, I have definitely had better, and my friend had the Pumpkin samsa which he thought was good, but his main course, the Plov was pretty terrible as well and he finished left than half In these trying times, I am all for trying to give a small local restaurant a try, but in return, they should try and earn me as a customer, and this restaurant almost went out of their way to ensure that I never return again nor recommend it to anyone looking for an alternative dining experience JUST HORRIBLE ON EVERY LEVEL

Jahayra M.

Yelp
first time for my husband and myself trying central Asian Uzbek cuisine loved the flavor and presentation of the appetizers and entrees. Service was on point from the moment we walked in the restaurant . Ambiance and decor very chic and cozy ! Highly recommend this restaurant!!

Yauhen S.

Yelp
I really like a good pilaf, and Gulchatay didn't let me down in this regard :) A friend with whom we came here to order food said that this restaurant has always been at the highest level since the opening! Still here is very interesting, the interior! We look forward to your opening with impatience !!! In the meantime, delivery and pick up)))
