"Next to a tree-lined boulevard, Gulu Gulu exudes rustic chic with its generous display of driftwood and art pieces by indigenous tribes. For over 20 years it has been serving traditional Paiwan cooking famous for chargrilled dishes such as BBQ tribal spring chicken. Try also Makauy sausage and Paiwan traditional galaugal-shell flower rice dumpling. Nightly performances by indigenous singers add to the experience." - Michelin Inspector

"190 miles south of Taipei, in central Taiwan, is the enchanting city of Taichung. Not only is the region the birthplace of boba tea; with wider spaces and cheaper rent, there’s more freedom for native aboriginal tribes like the Paiwan to run places like Gulu Gulu. Discreetly tucked inside Taichung’s West District, the restaurant’s name is meant to mimic the sound a hungry stomach, and should your belly “growl,” Gulu Gulu is the place to satiate it. Beyond a fascinating DIY arts-and-crafts folk garden, the small restaurant is decorated with colorful paper flags, painted rocks, and vibrant handmade table settings. There’s also a dog roaming around. His master is the one-man staff who serves up a clever mix of flavorful vegetarian-friendly fare with dishes that feature the ubiquitous Taiwanese meat-dish: pork. Don’t be surprised when that same server busts out his guitar to sing a few traditional aboriginal songs live, too. He’s a one-man show, but he’s good. Amazing food! I had some of the traditional Paiwan bbq (pork) and it was finger licking. The staff is super friendly. The music is really enjoyable (some great singers performed live). Also, I happened to leave my credit card there, but the staff went out of their way messaging me and making sure I get it back. So much love for this place!

Really authentic and yummy food! There is a minimum spend per pax (I think around NTD620?) but the set meal is worth it and scrumptious! After cooking ~9 dishes single-handedly, the chef became the live musician and that was the most impressive thing I've ever seen at a restaurant. Great atmosphere. Wonderful experience.

Really enjoyed this little gem of native Taiwanese cuisine tucked away in a little street in Taichung (1 Michelin Star!). Favourite dishes are fried tofu and the pork belly on stone. Fresh ingredients and beautifully presented. One of the staff doubles up as the piano player as well. Reservations needed as there is limited seating.

I had the set dinner and the dishes were all delicious, and could feel the sincerity of the chef in preparing the food. The singer for the night had nice voice, sounds like 张学友 but with R&B style. Enjoyed the food and songs. Highly recommended!

I would say some of the reviews on Google are not entirely objective. The comment about the portion size is not true. That caused our misjudgement when ordering (and subsequently ordering too much). It's definitely not a small portion (not like Spanish Tapas). Most of the food items were good. I particularly like the Golden Tofu (cooked with salted egg yolks) and the ginger-flower dumplings. These are dishes you don't get every where. As for the barbecue pork, it's a bit underwhelming. The price was a bit high compared to the quality of food and price of food in the surrounding area but still reasonable. As for the atmosphere, we didn't make a reservation beforehand so we were arranged to sit on the 2nd floor. It was very dark and the air con wasn't strong enough. I also got a few mosquito bites in the resto. Can be better.

Food is tasty but the portion is quite petite . We spent around NT1000/ person and each of us still felt not full. Actually, we all headed for another food revenue to satisfy our cravings for more food...

Unique experience on the Aboriginal food. The food was cooked fresh. Live band is pretty good. Very chill and carefree atmosphere
