On the Grid : Gum Tree

"An Aussie-inspired cafe and shop in a historic 1911 craftsman bungalow. Enjoy a delightful atmosphere on the sunny outdoor patio or one of their cozy indoor tables. Perfect if you’re seeking organic, locally-sourced ingredients as well as a selection of coffee, tea and pastries. Save room for an Australian lamington (where chocolate, coconut and cream blissfully unite). You’re bound to find a perfect one-of-a-kind gift for friends, family...maybe even treat yo’ self. A selection of home decor, jewelry and clothing (from casual to chic). They also have another store dedicated for kids just up the street." - HYFN

Google
Such a charming spot in Hermosa Beach! I stopped in to browse and was blown away by the beautifully curated selection of gifts, home decor, and accessories. Everything feels thoughtfully chosen, with a coastal, laid-back vibe that perfectly matches the area. The shop is bright, inviting, and a great place to find unique treasures. I didn’t try the café, but the space looked just as welcoming. A must-visit if you’re in the neighborhood!

Google
Sweet little shop with super cute housewares and kitchen items as well as things for kids. The cafe is right next door and has quite a variety especially for how small it is. The service is very friendly, very fast and the food we tried was delicious! The Aussie beef pie was so good we drove across town to get it again the next day!

Google
Very good place for breakfast or brunch! The sandwiches were very unique and among the better ones we had in the area. All of our orders also came with a side of fruits, which left us feeling very healthy :-). When we were finished we cleaned our own table - not sure if that’s expected or not as we did it out of courtesy.

Google
Let's start with the good. Service was great. The girl at the counter was friendly, answered all my questions, and the food and drink came out quick. The cafe had a cute atmosphere as well. Now the bad. My matcha latte was incredibly watery and flavorless. The quinoa salad with chicken tasted so bland. There was barely any dressing, and the chicken was SO dry. I paid $30 for this and felt so scammed. They had internet for customers, limited to 1 hour, but it was unusably slow. In-flight wifi is faster than their internet. Definitely would not come back.

Google
A really outstanding pairing of home/gift/design shop with a small-but-mighty café and coffee shop. It’s enough to make me want to move to Hermosa Beach and live close enough to Gum Tree that it could be my go to coffee shop and the place I buy all my gifts for friends, loved ones [and myself let’s be real]. If I had something like this on the Hollywood side of town, I’d spend most of my income at it!! In terms of the café: I had the iced lavender latte and it was divine. Too much and those can taste more like soap than like a delicious coffee. Theirs is phenomenal. In terms of the shop: from the kids section to the cooking section to the jewelry and the clothes - this is one of the better curated boutiques anywhere in greater LA or the South Bay. And I thought the prices were largely really reasonable. Some pricier things, as is fair, and lots of options to hit other price points too.

Google
Really enjoyed my time in the Cafe and their incredible gift shop. Very friendly group and great to support a local visit. Have the Americano and Oatmeal with fruit

Google
Chai latte awesome Avocado toast not too bad. Bread crust a little too hard. But service was great. Will be back to try other plates and drinks. Great patio, birds entertained our table.

Yelp
Great giftshop for unique gifts for everyone on your list! Cards, books, decor, games, kids clothes and nick nacks of all kinds. I have not tried the cafe but they were a great spot for my Christmas shopping. Parking can be tricky in this area but a nice walk on Pier Ave. is always pleasant. This will be on my list to shop for people for birthdays, christmas, gifts for coworkers, etc.

Yelp
Very cute cafe with delicious food. Highly recommend. Got pesto chicken sandwich with mom's potato salad (not pictured). Cinnamon roll, veggie breakfast wrap with fruit and cold brew. Staff was friendly and food came out pretty quickly, however they brought the food first, then the drinks, then the cinnamon roll. Check this spot out!

Yelp
Met a friend to catch up over brunch. The team was friendly, the food delicious, and the portions ample. Always happy to support locally owned spots and this is one that has graced Hermosa Beach for years.

Yelp
The food is very good. A little pricier. Helpful staff. The view overlooking HERMOSA beach is great. Recommend.

Yelp
Went just to get a mocha but ended up getting their Homemade cinnamon roll because it looked so good! They were both presented amazing and the mocha had a beautiful chocolate design in it that I wasn't expecting. The service was quick and good and you pay up front and they'll bring everything out to you. Inside has a white clean look to everything and very inviting. Only issue is there's little parking so it can be a little tougher to get to.

Yelp
i'm a hermosa native so gum tree has always been a staple when it comes to having a nice get together with fresh food, celebrating a loved one, or just doing some shopping! i don't know what has changed, but there is a clear tonal shift when it comes to the staff the past couple of years. whenever i come in (the store specifically) i get followed around the entire time i'm browsing. whether it be trailing me, peeking through their corridor or small window separating the main room from the children's section, there is pretty much not a single moment where i'm not being monitored. when i go in with my friends they are left alone even when they have a larger bag than i do and yes, we are different races. i hope i'm not reading too much into this but it's really a horrible feeling and it sucks to not feel welcome in my hometown when i've done nothing but support and love my community :(

Yelp
A cute cafe by the beach. They have a gift shop next to it. You order at the counter and they can bring your food to the table. It might seem like it isn't a lot of food but it's so filling. It's a nice place to stop by for a bite.
google avatar

Yelp
Still absolutely delicious in spite of a tiny kitchen. Has adorable patio with a surprisingly large amount of seating, and the best view in all of Hermosa Beach. Nothing has changed in all the years. This establishment has operated except the prices have gone up. But who has not experienced that?! Try the delicious lavender latte for a spring time treat!
google avatar

Veronica T.

Yelp
Light and fresh Australian breakfast place. Tiny/cosy inside. Beautiful outdoor seating. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The salsa was spectacular. Serving sizes are a little on the smaller side. Coffee was good. The pastries inside included overpriced tim tams. The the person taking my order came off to me as standoffish and impatient. Luckily the rest of the service from the other people were helpful and friendly. This cafe also has a small shop with really fun goods to look at!

Yelp
Food here is p bougie. Like I got a Brie cheese and peach jam sandwich. That was pretty good even tho cheese and jam wouldn't seem good together. The scone was dry bc scones are dry but the flavor was also good. The bacon egg and mushroom sandwich was probably the least fav. There was too much bread so that was dry when some sauce could be added to be bussin. The price was very expensive but ig that's bc we are like 10 min walk to the beach so it's a nice vibe. I guess u would go for the experience and nice atmosphere bc beach. But they had a screen that went behind a the fence probably to protect people from falling but the screen was pretty dirty.

Yelp
This place is so cute and such a close walk to the beach! Not to mention, the coffee here is so delicious!

Yelp
Love their food. Nice vibe to hang out for coffee or lunch. Polite staff. I'll be back!

Yelp
I haven't had an Aussie pie in such a long time, so I was thrilled to find a café that served it (as well as Australian coffee). Ordered the chicken curry Aussie pie and a lavender latte before grabbing a seat outside on the patio overlooking the street, with a decent view of the promenade and beach from the distance. Aussie pie had a good, hearty crust, and the curry was strong and flavorful, but my god was the chicken so dry, to the point it was almost unbearable to eat. The lavender latte was cute in the mug, but there was a notable sour aftertaste which I didn't really care for. Overall, it was just okay, but the location and views made up for it!

Yelp
Great small Cafe. VERY cool boutique next door. Some good specials. Soups. Pastries. Several vegan options. The outdoor seating is nice and cozy. The staff is GREAT. Last time, I had the avocado toast. It was really good. One of my favorite places to relax and have a good meal and coffee.

Yelp
Ambiance: cozy home style brunch place, and its next door is the gift shop, two businesses sharing the same establishment, street metered parking only Service: friendly and patient with questions about their signatures and speciality, attentively served water and food Food & Drink: variety choices from the menu and daily specials, they strive to use organic and locally sourced ingredients Avocado Toast - **** breakfast special, half toast, topped with arugula, egg whites, feta cheese, pesto drizzle, unique combinations, recommend Meat Pie - **** Aussie pie, ground beef, diced carrots, celery, onion, gravy, served with tomato sauce, crispy outside and juicy inside, recommend Mixed Greens - *** side dish, rotten leaves, not very fresh Fruits - *** side dish, not so fresh either Cafe Mocha - **** beautiful latte art and sweet taste, recommend Price: moderate portions and reasonable prices, expect $20+ per person

Yelp
My mom grabbed some stuff from here while my partner and I worked remote at the hotel. She says the vibes were nice and they had decent food offering. She got me an Arnold Palmer that I enjoyed. It was the perfect mix of lemonade and tea but did get weak at the end but that's to be expected. My partner got the Mediterranean Salad which tasted pretty good. Think the Trader Joe's one but with a bugler and a tad more "upscale" aka better. I can't speak on the service but I would def go there in person to try other stuff next trip here.

Yelp
Following on our recent delightful visit to the shop, a girl friend and I tried Gum Tree Cafe for lunch. The cafe is as cute as the shop, and the food is great! I enjoyed lunch so much that I've already brought another friend back for lunch ag AMBIENCE (5/5) The outdoor patio is adorable, fairly spacious, and perfect for a casual meal. You order at the counter inside the cafe, find a table outside, and your meal is brought outside to you. FOOD (4/5) I'm a big fan of Aussie meat pies, At the cashier's recommendation, I opted for the Thai chicken curry pie. The pie was savory with chicken, coconut milk, onions, and vegetables and came with a refreshing salad. A perfect lunch portion! SERVICE (4/5) The team was friendly and polite!

Yelp
I found out about this place through the Hermosa Beach police department. The owners were nice enough to host a cops and coffee event here for a meet and greet. While here, we decided to order some food to enjoy in their patio area. Tables are placed with generous space between them to allow dog owners to bring their furry friends. The food here is amazing, especially the bacon, eggs, and mushroom breakfast sandwich. It's served with your choice of a salad or fresh fruit. There's plenty of other offerings on the menu to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. The owner is a really delight to talk and willing to share his personal history. This guy lived all over the world, literally. His loved of the community and providing great food goes without saying.

Mary S.

Yelp
Absolutely love this Hermosa Beach gem. The staff is friendly, the pastries are tasty and coffee and tea drinks are on point. Lots of seating outside, under pretty umbrellas in a garden like setting. There's also limited seating inside at cute little tables. The whole vibe is "beach cafe meets Paris street cafe." Somehow it works. Pets are welcome outside, but not inside. If you've got extra time, check out its sister shop, full of beautiful tchotchkes you really don't need but are going to want.

Yelp
Love this place!! Great place to get coffee I'm sure, but both times I've been, I got soup!! Their soup is amazing!! I tried 2 different ones they had. I can't remember the second one, but potato was one of them. So good. Great service too & plenty of parking although I just walked over. Great outdoor seating area! I'll be going back for sure!

Yelp
Food is amazing! And the people make it so fast. They have food for all kinds of people. They have a bathroom in case you need it. The feeling in the room is calm and pleasant. Also connected to the store there is a gift shop from ages 2- older

Ari L.

Yelp
Truly terrible customer service, on top of cheap products. Your money would be much better spent at other local shops!
google avatar

Natasha G.

Yelp
Walked past Gum Tree a few times and decided to give it a try. Lattes were delicious. Highly recommend. They have Oat, Hemp, Almond and soy milk alternatives. Food was okay. I got the avocado toast which was a great portion size. Kids menu was very limited for breakfast so that was kind of a bummer. Banana bread was dry, dense and flavorless. Overall I feel like there are better alternatives for breakfast options.

Sophie M.

Yelp
The best beach cafe atmosphere and amazing service! The avocado toast and feta breakfast sandwich are favorites, and they always have fresh foods
google avatar

Brena E.

Yelp
I came in for the first time and was waited on right away. They made me a chai with whole milk and it was probably the best chai that I have ever had! It wasn't very busy in there on that day and I had no problem finding a table to sit at. You have to ask for the Wi-Fi password and it is only valid for an hour. Cute space and friendly service.
google avatar

Janet C.

Yelp
Service was friendly and place was cute. Only 2 options for Aussie meat pies which were chicken curry and a beef one. They also had sausage rolls which I ordered and thought was tasty but got food poisoning afterwards so totally not worth it. Nice views from the outdoor seating area but so many flies that kept landing on us and our food. The beef pie was delicious and definitely better than the curry pie. Metered parking along the street. I recommend the fruit vs the greens aka salad which was just salad mix and dressing.
google avatar

Jo S.

Yelp
Cute casual cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Order at the counter and food delivered to your table. Pets allowed in the outdoor seating area. We ordered hot cocoa's; meat pie with salad; sausage roll with fruit; and non-fat yogurt with fruit and granola. Friendly fast service. Good food. Cute place. Metered street parking.
google avatar

Max S.

Yelp
This is a cute restaurant. It looks and feels like you are eating at a friend's backyard patio area. It's nice eating here. I ordered the avocado toast, along with a latte. The avocado toast is a lot of food. Very filling. I got the chili flakes, which made it a little too hot (spicy). Service: Friendly. You order at the counter, and they deliver your food to your table. You seat yourself, and bus your own table. Parking: Metered, street.
google avatar

Ginna S.

Yelp
My friend, her two year old son and I stopped by for a brunch meal. We ordered a kids breakfast (toast, egg and fruit) for the little one, and split a beet salad and prosciutto sandwich between the two of us. Besides the portions being more on the smaller side (relative to the price), the food was fresh/good. We also ordered a lavender latte and an americano which were both good as well. Despite being on the busier side, we were able to find seating pretty quickly and the service (from the lady who took our order and the lady who delivered our meals) were both friendly and kind.

Yelp
Quick recap: - Coffee: Excellent - Portion size: Average - Service: At the counter; Nice - Environment: Cafe + outside covered - $: Slightly expensive - Perks: Get a free coffee when you buy beans More details: We went there for a quick coffee on a Sunday. We had an espresso ($3 ish) and a Cappuccino ($4 ish). The taste was good - not excellent but above average for America. The staff was nice. Overall? Good coffee. Nice environment. Expensive compared to a drip coffee at a bar, but worth the premium!
google avatar

Angie M.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast. Absolutely gorgeous store. The gal taking our order was great. The gal making the drinks had the worst attitude. She seemed extremely put upon to hand us a coffee or drop off food. Our "thank you" was met with a sour face, and and walking off...such a shame that a beautiful place like this was overshadowed by an employee's attitude. Something we have to now consider, when choosing a place to patronize.
google avatar

Niki N.

Yelp
What a cute little spot!! Came here for breakfast and was so obsessed we went back every day while here! They have a lot of outdoor seating with umbrellas and shady spots so there is plenty of room for everyone. All staff is wearing masks while serving and there is hand sanitizer in multiple locations. Also their condiment station is all in little containers so they are really easy to grab! All sweeteners and hot sauces perfectly portioned out for you. The coffee... AMAZING! Huge coffee snob and the flavor was on point. Love how they also have non-dairy options too like oatmilk and almond milk for your coffee. Tried a few different items from their menu and each item was fabulous! They rotate their daily specials and our favorite one is the avocado toast with bacon, goat cheese, and a honey drizzle over top! Blew my mind lol. The egg and cheese croissant was also a banger. So simple yet so tasty. Can't wait to come back at our new fav breakfast spot!!

Janet B.

Yelp
The portions are minuscule and the prices are big especially when ordering thru DoorDash. Beware. You'll be broke and still hungry.
google avatar

Aditi C.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't eaten here before! My daughter and I stopped by here for lunch the other day and we were pleasantly surprised. It was too cold to sit outside so we opted to sit inside. It's small inside but really cute, like a little French café. We were hungry for lunch so my daughter had a prosciutto panini and I had an Aussie pie with beef. Both were delicious. We were eyeing the croissants and breakfast menu so we'll definitely be back. The croissants looked heavenly! We also bought something at the attached little shop next door after lunch.
google avatar

Caroline C.

Yelp
I have enjoyed brunch at the little cafe multiple times. The menu is limited but I have liked almost everything I have tried there. Very limited indoor seating but they have a nice little patio out on the street side. The only issue was my last visit had a lot of unwanted diners - flies.
google avatar

Chris N.

Yelp
I was in the area for work and looking for a local coffee shop and came across this place. As soon as I saw "Australian" in the description, I knew I had to try it. I spent 2 years in Australia and was feeling a little nostalgic, so I was pretty keen to try the food here. First off, I don't know Hermosa beach that well, but it seems like it's all metered parking...unless you can find something on the residential streets and walk over. They offer masks and hand sanitizer at the front entrance, which is great! Plus, the staff all had masks on. I ordered an iced mocha with oatmeal and less sweet. It had decent flavor, though still too sweet for me. I also ordered a sausage with a side of fruit roll to-go. I was eager for this because I haven't had a sausage roll since I left Australia. It was good, though it didn't taste quite like the ones I remember...it was a bit more "fancy," in fact. Kinda tasted a little "gourmet," which is fine. It was just not like I remembered. It actually reminds of my mother's Vietnamese meat pastries, which are fantastic. So overall, good. Just not as "Australian" as I would have preferred. I'd still recommend this place as a decent cafe if you're in the area. Oh, and the side of fruit was good! It had a nice variety of mango, apples, grapes, strawberries, and blueberries!
google avatar

Nikki S.

Yelp
The coffee they serve at Gum Tree is so darned good that if it were the only thing on the menu it would still be worth coming here. As luck would have it, they also serve food, and some of that food is excellent! Gum Tree is a great place to visit for either dinner or lunch. Whatever brings you here, my go-to food selection is their avocado toast. They make many different variations of this dish, ranging from the plain single topping (crunchy, tasty, and fresh) to versions with unconventional extras. My favorite ways to vary up from the plain are either the feta or the balsamic vinegar; both are delicious when paired with the basic avocado topping. The atmosphere here is casual, the prices are reasonable, and the staff is very friendly - highly recommended!
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito was super delicious. They use organic eggs and salad and the spiced chai with cold foam was amazing
google avatar

Sherry M.

Yelp
This place is just a few blocks from the ocean and a good vibe. We ordered the lemon ginger tea, which was tangy and delicious. I watered mine down some yo my liking, but prefer this over not flavorful enough. The crust if the pot pies was incredibly good and flaky. The service was friendly. Only weird thing was that there were magazines you could browse thru, but someone cut out Ramon (yo me) items thruput the magazines. Would be better not to even have than there. Overall, pleasant experience.
google avatar

Darlene Y.

Yelp
This place is so cute! Went for a long walk with a girlfriend with the goal of coming to Gumtree. AVOCADO TOAST is so good, with a bit of vegemite. Caffeine's are standard, and a must. ENJOY!
google avatar

Mia L.

Yelp
5.22.16: Cute little place with outdoor seating. Indoor is too loud but still not a bad option if it's rains or something. I got the avocado toast with smoked salmon. I didn't really get a lot of smoked salmon considering the cost of the toast. $15? I believe Not too salty, the right amount of avocado spread and so at least it taste the way I like it. If you're in the area this is a nice place to just chill and relax with some healthy food options.
google avatar

Sajeeta A.

Yelp
Found this place for my Aussie husband's bday. Food was okay, but nothing extraordinary and portion sizes were big. You have to order at the counter and then they bring it to your table.
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
We visited Hermosa Beach on a mini vacation this weekend. We ate in some fancier dinner restaurants so finding Gum Tree was PERFECT for us. We ate here twice. Once for breakfast and once for lunch. The breakfast was fresh and delicious eggs/fruits and wonderful lattes. Lunch the AUS meat pies with fresh fruit and / or salad. I noticed a wonderful kids menu. Patio dining and very clean restrooms for patrons. It was the perfect stop on the way to and from the beach, fabulous food and service, reasonable prices to balance our more expensive dining at night. We will be back!
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
Cute concept store with eats at the cafe. Happy to be having an Americano without extra charge for iced. The avocado toast is pretty basic without extra additions such as egg. The bread they use isn't the typical sourdough. I think I've made better avocado toast myself! There is a nice outdoor patio for dining and the store is across the way with boutique items such as swell water bottles in cute designs. Pretty popular location it seems at 10am.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
The food was so good! Very fresh and tasty. Literally can't complain about the food what so ever. Didn't take long to get either. I got the grilled chicken with pesto, tomato, goat cheese, and this really yummy bread. The dressing was some type of mustard vinaigrette that I shockingly LOVED. ONLY reason for the 4 stars was seating was kind of smaller so you had to wait to find a table if you ordered your food for eat in.. again no complaints ! Great area, tasted SO yummy and fresh, perfect weather outside and easy ordering and nice staff.

Yelp
I live in So Cal but I found Gum Tree by accident when visiting Hermosa Beach with my Australian partner. With that name, we simply had to stop in for breakfast and at this point, he was getting crabby because he missed his Australian coffee. (Note: Aussies can be some of the world's greatest coffee snobs in the most delightful way.) Food: Excellent. We went with simple eggs and avocado toast both mornings we ate there. Coffee: Possibly life-saving, definitely the best lattes in Hermosa Beach! Now with COVID-19 keeping me out of Oz for the foreseeable future, it's time to revisit Gum Tree, get all sentimental, and load up on top-notch eats.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Gum Tree! You are such a cute place by my absolute favorite beach. I really enjoyed the inside seating and also thought about how it would be so nice to sit outdoors as well. There was no line when we went. I love the concept behind your food. This was my first time trying an Aussie pie, and it did not disappoint. FOOD: The flaky crust of the chicken pot pie was amazing and the fresh fruit on the side was really such a refresher from the heavier pot pie. Also, I appreciated the side sauce :) There's a cute store attached to the restaurant to browse after eating a nice light lunch. Definitely would recommened if you're in the area. Just a splendid, cute shop with good food that is not really that common in the LA area :)

L T.

Yelp
Okay, I was really excited to write a review for Gum Tree! First off, how fricken cute is this place?! They repurposed a house and made it into a cafe and gift shop!! I went to the cafe side and ordered some take out. The girl who took my order was so sweet and accommodating. I asked for no tomatoes on my egg croissant sandwich and asked if another sandwich can have the bread swapped out for a croissant. She said yes with a smile While my food was being made, I went over to the gift shop to browse. Omg this is one of the best gift shops ice ever been to. Usually you'll find things that are cheap and cheesy. But let me tell you, Gum Tree is a very well thought out curation of the most beautiful pieces! They have everything and everything is modern and up to date: books, festive decor (Christmas), candles, hand lotion, kitchen ware, home goods, you'll find it all! My favorite section was the jewelry! They have pieces that are inexpensive that can be found all over the shop, but what caught my eye was the glass cases they have in the back. Here, you can find their fine jewelry pieces, the ones that are gold-filled and solid 14k gold pieces. I came for croissant sandwich and left with a gorgeous necklace. That's how dangerous it is to visit Gum Tree. After checking their website, I know I def have to go back to pick up a few more pieces. I knocked a star down because of the price of the food at the cafe. I saw menus on Yelp and was expecting the croissant sandwich to be about $8. I was taken aback to see they're over $10 each now. Either way, they were delicious.

Yelp
The food here is REALLY GOOD! Nice staff, reasonable prices and the service was quick. They have a great range of options and the desserts are good too.
