The Best Restaurants in San Marcos | Eater Austin

"Named after the green and flexible cartoon character Gumby, this go-to spot for pizza and cocktails serves a mix of creative, college-town-inspired dishes like the Pickle Rick, a pizza slathered with a base of homemade ranch sauce that’s topped with mozzarella cheese, dill pickles, dollops of ricotta, and more dill and a ranch drizzle for good measure. Every San Marcos local is destined to have at least one of Gumby’s signature cups handed out with their pizza. Although the interior might look like any other pizza joint, the vibrant outdoor murals are eye-catching and easily draw people in. Place takeout and delivery orders online." - Kimberly Olivas

Google
Pretty good pizza. Order by the pizza or the slice. They offer Maine Root Sodas which arent my favorite but still good! Their cups are also very cute and reusable! Did not dine in so cannot comment on that other than there was ample seating.

Google
Artsy joint--fun menu, bold flavors. Pepperoni rolls were amazing, as was the Randy Marsh & Galore Pizzas!

Joe Hernandez

Google
The two recommended pizzas were the stoner pizza and the pickle rick. Add stuff crust to the pickle rick and its da bomb.

Google
Very friendly atmosphere good Pepperoni cheese sticks. This reminds me of the Bosco sticks. But theirs have pepperoni . I used to buy from Sams Club all the time but now I found my new place fresh and hot.💓

Google
My husband and I have been coming here since we were students, before they had their liquor license (circa 2017-2018). Their pizza is the best and they have unique specialty pizzas. We recommend the Randy Marsh, Pickle Rick and Stoner Pie but you can't go wrong with anything. I want to give a shout out to the bartender. She was bussing tables, taking phone/front of house orders, bar orders and making drinks. Service that deserves to be recognized!! The purple haze drink was phenomenal.

Google
Great selection of pizza 🍕! Huge slices. Comes out piping hot! We ordered the bacon cheeseburger, bacon ranch, and pepperoni pizzas. All delicious. The restaurant is loud, but we could still hold conversation. Service was fairly quick considering we ordered specialty pizzas. Parking was a little tough. Not many spots and tight. We dined on a Friday night and it was semi busy.

Google
Seems like an ok college pizza joint but couldn't get past the part where the cashier grabbed my slice with her hands and placed it on the paddle before sliding it into the oven... I'm no germaphobe by any means but come on... bare hands? Nah...

Google
I love this place! Pizza by the slice or the full pie is great. It’s always fresh and tasty. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. I enjoy the patio area and the indoor decor so sitting inside or outside is cool. You can add toppings to your pizza also ! My go to spot for when I’m in San Marcos best pizza ever and the ranch is amazing !

Yelp
Everything is delish but it's just not close enough for me to have it often.. get the pickle pizza - it's the best thing ever. Get one to go it's even better reheated .. Typical college run store front nothing fancy but packs a punch in flavors. Best ever.

Yelp
We came when it was slow but during the school year I'm sure this place is packed. They offer whole pies, slices, salads and more. You order at the counter and they will bring it out. Grab your own cups at the register too. They have the cool drinks and There is a full bar available. I have been dying to try a pickle pizza and I finally found one. It surprisingly works. The ricotta dollops and ranch drizzle really make the pizza.

Yelp
Back when I attended TXST, I'd only tried the pepperoni rolls, which were good, but I never cared for them--I'm not a pizza person in general. Fast forward to this weekend: I visited San Marcos with a friend who had never been before, and she wanted pizza. We had a couple of options, but Gumby's was the more convenient choice. We decided to try two slices of the Pickle Rick, and this pizza was great! The flavor combination was perfect. My friend, who loves pizza, even said it was the best specialty pizza combo she's ever had. I couldn't agree more. It was so good that we ended up ordering a small one to take home. However, with the whole pizza we ordered, the crust is a tad thicker compared to the slices, we preferred the thinner crust. The service was nice and chill. Super friendly, and I even got my friend one of those special Gumby's cups as a fun little souvenir. The ambiance was laid-back with that cool college-town vibe--perfect for casual dining. Honestly, for someone who doesn't usually care about pizza, this was a one of a kind. I wish I'd discovered the Pickle Rick back when I was a student, but better late than never.

Yelp
Whenever we first walked in we were greeted and told to take a menu since they don't have a board. I already knew what I wanted - someone had told me about the pickle rick I wasn't expecting much but basic dough and epic toppings. However, the pizza dough here is perfect. It's a perfect dough!! Has the mush and the crunch! I personally coulda gone without the ricotta, but still very interesting flavor and will definitely coming back to try other pizzas! Found our new laid back pizza place!

Yelp
This place is the best pizza you can get in town. Maybe central Texas. I'm a loyal customer for several years. I have recommended this place to countless people. The staff is great and we love the service. Well, today I'm beyond mad. I spent over $60 here for large power house pizza, calzone, breadsticks. My pizza was paper thin. Not floppy New York style. I mean the damn pizza was thinner then the pepperoni. Had no structure and made a mess on my floor. This was not worth the price they charged. Picture shows the pepperoni thickness compared to pizza. Had to use a fork to eat the mess. Bought 9/28 Number 142

Yelp
This pizza/wings/beer hall just a couple blocks away from Texas State was worth the visit. People are friendly as I mentioned it was my first visit and the young man up front went over my options either off the menu where they have your basic pizza (including a massive one) with a craft beer bar; as well as "other stuff" which include wings, calzones, etc. I will tell if I was back in college this would have been a go-to for me as it's possible also just to order a slice and be in and out cheaply (you can get a cheese slice for $3.29). It doesn't really have the optimal amount of TVs for me to consider it a sports bar but for just hanging out and/or studying on a Sunday night, this is a perfect place. With just my daughter and I we got the 12" pizza. They have specialty recipes already so that you can save brain cells. The blockhead at $14.99 makes for an easy choice for me as it's your basic meat lovers style. Crust is that perfect blend of cooked and dough-y with a great flavor. I also thought I'd give the wing a chance, in part because I didn't know if the pizza would be enough. Eight bone-in wings at $14.99 seems a tad high and I'd rather get the full pizza for that amount if I had to choose. But the chili flavor that I got was great. Turns out the pizza would have been enough as we had 3 pieces leftover so it's pretty decently filling. Turns out you have to order the beer separate from the food so I went to the bar to check out the craft beers. They had maybe 20 or so available. Being so close to Austin I thought what would be better than the McCanau-Haze. It's like an IPA that already has the orange squeezed in....I believe it was just under $6 for the glass. I could see this being a multi-purpose place for college kids, and turned out to be a decent, low-key place for local families that were there as well as maybe a parent visiting their kid close to campus. Few folks came in with the munchies so it was sufficient for them too....LOL....ahhhh college! It would be on my list to stop there again if my daughter decides to go to college in San Marcos.

Yelp
Terrible service, took over 40 minutes for 5 pizza rolls. Tables sticky and uncomfortable.

Ally K.

Yelp
we had ordered a pizza from gumby's and it came after an hour and half and it was covered in ants and when we called gumby's to tell them about our pizza they told us we would have to pay for a brand new a pizza and they could not help us in any way.

Brenda S.

Yelp
Ordered online, estimated time was 30 mins no problem. Go to pick up 30 mins later, was told it would be 5 more mins, ok no problem - means hot & fresh., yes! 10 mins later they come to tell me they forgot my poke sticks it was gonna be another 10 mins. 15 mins later my order finally came out. So I might have hot poke sticks but everything else luke warm which is my pizza & pizza rolls. No apologies, explanations or anything. And It did not seem to be busy, at least not inside the restaurant, maybe 10 people there. Disappointing. Update - not even warm, had to microwave an order I just picked up!

Yelp
I LOVE GUMBYS PIZZA!!! Carley and Simone were working the front counter and were very patient with me when I was unsure what I wanted. They are very kind ladies and deserve the world. Also, Kam was working the bar and was extremely kind and attentive, even while working during dinner rush on a Saturday. The staff at Gumby's made me feel at home, especially after moving from far away to attend college.

Yelp
Somehow I had never tried the salads here? I really thought I had, but these are competitively priced ($7.49-$7.99) with marvelously abundant toppings. Only one dressing packet, which was fine by me. My dad treats salads strictly as vehicles for delivering 1000 Island dressing, so in THOSE cases you will want to have some ready at home or pay for another. It was huge, full lunch clamshell size. There were copious piles of cheddar, carrot, croutons, diced tomato, mushroom, and red onion. When I dug in I found the croutons obscured a cache of green bell pepper. All over a nice bed of spinach in good condition. Truly fed me twice, but even a hungry Mr R would have been sated with that full salad. And it's fifty cents cheaper than their Garden Salad, can't wait to try that one next! When I was perusing the corners of the menu a few weeks ago, I saw chicken tenders at 3pc for $5, which is an ok price for a small snacky sort of thing. When I opened the clamshell my reaction was two of them were small, but digging in I found the white meat was juicier than expected, the lemon pepper saucing was tasty and sufficient without crossing the line into sloppy, plus it came with a dipping sauce. I realized I couldn't get bone-in wings for that price in such a small order, and the flavor was really better than I'd expected. Together with half the aforementioned salad, I was comfy and my palate pleased. ***** update end of August 2023 I've since enjoyed the sweet chili and teriyaki sauced tenders. Still a decent price for 3pc with saucing and dip, just heads up that the quantity of sauce varies wildly. I got so much extra sweet chili I was able to use it in a separate dish I cooked myself and the next time was sparse in comparison (hitting my platonic ideal, but I don't run a pizza joint).

Yelp
I tried the cinna-stick today and they were amazing! They're so consistent with the pizza here and it was so yummy as always!

Yelp
Everything about this place is great! The employees are great! Very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend the stoner pizza. Trust me it's worth it. The atmosphere is laid back and enjoyable. I'm definitely going to be a regular customer.

Yelp
This is my go-to San Marcos spot. Great prices, vibes and pizza. I've never had a bad time or bad service here. I've taken out of town/state friends and family here, and they always leave happy and full! The pepperoni rolls are a huge stand out. Delicious garlicky and cheesy!
google avatar

Jeremy K.

Yelp
Gumby's is great for SM. They opened my senior year of college and have remained a strong pizza joint since then. Happy they've been able to figure out a strategy that works for them. Large tables and decent enough parking for their location in town too. Service is always happy and accommodating.

daniel S.

Yelp
If you spent time in College Station eating wonderful Gumby's pizza, pizza rolls and jalapeño ranch, this is NOT your Gumby's. The name is the same, but that is where the similarities end. For starters, there is no Jalapeño Ranch..... if that weren't bad enough, the rolls are just gross. Basically a low fat cheese stick with 3 pepperonis wrapped in dough. I can't even describe how disappointed I am with this location and how I long for the College Station Gumby's with the owner who actually cares about food quality and taste. Don't waste your money here.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
I tried it with my mom, and I think this was the best pizza ever. The people/ staff were also very friendly, and got my pizza out quick!
google avatar

Dylan V.

Yelp
The food is good but the service is horrible. They messed up my order. And then they cook my right order but ended up forgetting about it and burning my pizza because they were eating the mess up they had made. Then after burning my food. They cook it right. Ur it took 30 minutes plus. Food was good but the service was so bad that I'm giving one star. They ended up comping my food but it wasn't even worth it because of the service I had gotten. I won't be back here because of it. Sadly the food was good
google avatar

Mya ..

Yelp
Yummy pizza! The service is fast and delivery is fast. Always my go to for the amazing pepperoni rolls

Adam G.

Yelp
Gumby's hit the spot after the river! Only this piece survived! Stop by and try the pepperoni and chicken bacon ranch!
google avatar

Carmen P.

Yelp
Gumby's always hits the spot. Don't order it as much due to the price. Trying to save money and it's a little pricy but still very good. We do delivery and have never had an issue. They are accurate with delivery time. We get a Randy marsh and pokey stick with ranch and usually have some left over. I gone inside once and it seemed like a chill place
google avatar

Christa C.

Yelp
The first time I went to Gumby's Pizza, it was good. The food was excellent, and the wait time wasn't long. The only problem I had was the staff was quite mean and unhelpful. She rushed us when we were not even at the register to order. The restaurant is nicely decorated, though. The second time, I ordered takeout, and it was miserable. I asked for the jalapeño popper pizza, and half of it did not have sauce or cheese. I'm honestly baffled about how that even happened since my order was not modified, and it seems like a hard thing to forget. (The picture is from my first order, not my second, which I don't have a picture of)

Sandra R.

Yelp
This pizza is so amazingly delicious and the crust is nice and crunchy as well as soft
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Touring Texas State with my son and dropped into Gumby's for a bite. Calzones are super yummy. Great beer selection. Bartender Shelby was awesome and gave us lots of good tips about places To go in San Marcos. 5 star lemon drop.

Troy D.

Yelp
Overall not good. The crust is amazing but the pizza is extremely greasy. It made my wife sick and my dog puked. I have a pretty tough stomach and it left me feeling queasy. If they would tone down on the oil it would probably be decent. The customer service is spot on but the product just isn't up to the standard.

Madeline H.

Yelp
Love Gumby's usually but can believe they made the side of ranch half the size but still charge the same price as before. Also burnt my slices today. Do better Gumby's
google avatar

Rachael O.

Yelp
Haven't been there in awhile since they dont deliver way out here but it was worth the ride to pick up. Pizza perfect. Best pepperoni. Best ranch- hands down. Pokey sticks yum. Good deal too.
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
It was nearly nine and I'd eaten nothing but a bagel all day, and as she often does, my spouse said that she would choose dinner. She went with the veggie pizza and two mules. The pizza was delicious, with a light and chewy crust, and the mules had a good pour and were tasty. The delivery was likewise quick, and the delivery person was pleasant and polite. Seriously, this was delicious for two very hungry people.

Yelp
I had the best experience here. Especially with Shelby their bartender!! She was so personable and totally made my day!!

J L.

Yelp
Gumby's Pizza never disappoints! Their cheesy goodness and unique toppings are unmatched. The perfect spot for a quick, delicious slice or a full meal with friends. Highly recommend their signature pies!
google avatar

Klin L.

Yelp
How do you run out of pepperoni rolls? We called on our way through town, like way ahead of time. We wanted a bakers dozen and were told they were out. I don't get how you have stuff to make a pepperoni pizza but not pepperoni rolls?
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
Pizza slices are ready within minutes and was pretty tasty! Waiting for the pizza rolls!

James P.

Yelp
The chicken bacon ranch was delicious. And I try to slice of the jalapeño pepperoni classic.
google avatar

Zachary S.

Yelp
Spent $50 on pizza and charged $1for a small side of ranch. It's overly greedy to do such a thing, very disappointed in the owners
google avatar

Carolyn G.

Yelp
Wow! The pizza is pretty good and very reasonably priced. Staff were all pleasant and they were slammed busy! We will be back soon, I'm hoping to get the pink cup next time.

Alexander R.

Yelp
Takes legit a hour for literally just 3 pizza rolls. I waited from 1 pm to technically 1:30 since the time went back so legit over a hour. Trash.

liz l.

Yelp
Amazing food a staple in San Marcos 10/10 love this place. Cheap pizza good quality & amazing service.
google avatar

Nathan M.

Yelp
great service great food shit is soooo good was very impressed with speed of delivery

KayCi W.

Yelp
This is THE best pizza in San Marcos. I love collecting their cups, everyone is always nice and I love the vibes.

Josh A.

Yelp
The service was great and the food was delicious. The interior was very clean and staff very helpful.

lexie c.

Yelp
Best pizza in town for a vegan like me!! They have vegan cheese so their pizzas and pokey stixs can easily be turned vegan. Their cinna stix also just happen to be vegan as well. woop woop
google avatar

Janette L.

Yelp
We needed to eat and stopped in. Pleasantly surprised at how good the pizza was, including the crust.

Tricia M.

Yelp
Next time I'm in San Marcos, I'll definitely stop by Gumby's again to visit my new favorite bartender, Shelby! She's so friendly and makes the best cocktails!

Robin W.

Yelp
Shelby is my favorite bartender at Gumby's! She also bartends at all my lake house parties. Great service, delicious drinks and always a crowd pleaser!
google avatar

Daysi L.

Yelp
My friend ordered pizza from here and I had two slices but it was honestly so good I think ima have to start coming here regularly. Only complaint is that she ordered spinach and there was barely any on it. Regardless, super good pizza and the location is very nice on the inside. If you like pizza that doesn't have a lot of sauce def give it a try.

Lara G.

Yelp
I went to Gumby's with friends. I was having a crappy day & they were trying to cheer me up. The bartender was this sweet/ funny / attentive young lady. Who definitely added to my experience with her sunshine. I think her name was Shelby. Thank you again Shelby! Your drinks were awesome!
google avatar

Johnathan H.

Yelp
The pizza here really has no right to be as good as it is. Gumby's Pizza? Really? An old claymation show that's not even on TV anymore, that nobody below the age of 40 will know of? Weird. But dang is the pizza good. And affordable! I got the stoner pizza. Tasted awesome and made me wish I blazed it before I walked in. Keep up the good work. I'll be back.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
It was ok. Sadly, the buffet no longer exists at this location. We were able to purchase pizza slices ala Sbarro at the mall. The pizza was good. Service was good. They have no salt or pepper....what?? Nice bar with nice offerings of beer and liquor.
google avatar

Mariah G.

Yelp
The pizza and service were pretty good, however when my boyfriend and I visited at around 3pm we tried to just get 4 pepperoni slices but they were completely out. Didn't even offer to make a fresh one so that we can just get the slices instead we had to buy a medium (which is 8 slices) and we're told it would take 10-15 minutes. It did not. It took about 30 minutes and ended up (shocker) only eating 2 slices each and had to waste the rest of the pizza. On top of that, almost every single table was messy. Now they were NOT busy, I had seen a worker just standing up at the front register twiddling his thumbs the whole time we were there. I would understand not bussing tables if it was a busy lunch rush, but they were not. We watched as they cleared plates off a table but did not come around to actually wipe the table off. There was crumbs and it was just sticky. Finally, they advertise having happy hour from 2-6pm everyday. We only went here to get the cocktails in the caprisun type pouches, however when we asked if the bar was opened we were met with an unsure response of "yeah I think it's closed today?". Overall, the food and service was mediocre. And the place was disgusting to be in. Not coming back.
