12 New Hotels in Greece Opening this Spring - AFAR

"On rugged Folegandros, this small collection of 27 suites and villas emphasizes the island’s wild beauty through stone-and-wood architecture, native planting, and serene sea vistas; every unit includes a pool. The clifftop spa uses native herbs and tonics, the restaurant sources many ingredients from an on-site organic garden, and a distinctive bar is styled as a vinyl listening space inspired by Japanese jazz kissatens." - Nicola Chilton

"The Cycladic island of Folegandros is often described as what Santorini must have felt like 50 years ago — a collection of whitewashed cliff-top villages overlooking the Aegean Sea where a visitor might get swept up in a festival spilling into the main square. The island has no airport, and much of its land is classified as a protected forest. But its relative remoteness has also meant that there aren’t many places to stay, and the existing small hotels book up quickly, which is why island-hoppers are so excited about Gundari, Folegandros’s first luxury hotel. After a soft opening last summer, the 30-room property is now complete with a trio of new villas and a three-seat wine bar with a picture window overlooking the ocean. Rising from the copper-red cliffs on the southeastern coast of the island, the resort is designed to reflect its surroundings, with unpolished marble floors and an earthy palette. Each of the rooms has a pool that’s solar heated, and over 600 indigenous seedlings, including olive and fig trees, were planted on the 100-acre property. On-site, guests can visit the subterranean spa for facials and massages, wade to the sunken swim-up bar, then sample produce from the hotel’s organic farm at Orizon restaurant. But they’re encouraged to explore Folegandros by borrowing one of Gundari’s electric bikes or the electric Mini Moke to visit churches and coves, chartering the speedboat for a sunset sail or hiking the 35 miles of trails. Still, the highlight of a trip just might be a visit to Chora, the capital village two miles from the resort, to soak up the ambience or take a cooking class with Yia Yia Irene, the owner of Irene’s Restaurant, which has fed the island for over 70 years. Rooms from $540 a night, gundari.com."

An oasis on the rustic, charming Folegandros island. The premises are very tasteful, the service attentive and the farm-to-table food delicious. We loved spending time both in our room with its private outdoor space and at the infinity pool, also really enjoyed the sunset views. Whilst the road to get to the hotel is not the easiest, once there you are happy not to move much. Still worth exploring the island (the main town and Church, the remote beaches and restaurants such as the picturesque Irene’s Tavern) but do make the most of the actual Gundari.

We had the most amazing 5 nights at Gundari. The architecture and design of the resort fits perfectly within the raw and stunning cliffs. The team made us feel very welcome for our entire trip, accomodating to our requests and sharing plenty of useful information on some special spots to visit. The Superior Cave Suite was quite amazing, beautifully laid out, unreal views of the ocean with a wonderful private pool. The food was delicious and prepared to very high standards, even tailoring some meals to our needs. A magical time of luxury and beauty on the island of Folegandros - highly recommended.

What a magical place and stunning grounds. A little gem on a cliff on the island of Folegandros. The location is fantastic, the staff warm, very approachable, service-oriented and charming. The rooms are stylish, comfortable and with a sea view that leaves you speechless. Folegandros is definitely worth a visit for the hotel alone. Many thanks to Angelika and her team for providing me with an indescribably beautiful room.

This was our second year returning to Gundari (with friends this time), and once again, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and attentive hospitality from the incredible staff. Our room was very comfortable, the food and drinks consistently top-notch, and the curated background music added the perfect touch to the atmosphere. The spa? Absolutely otherworldly — a true highlight of our stay. What makes Gundari truly special is how seamlessly it blends into Folegandros’ serene yet rugged landscape. You can genuinely feel the energy of the earth, day and night. We left feeling rejuvenated and already dreaming of our next visit. See you next year!!!

In nutshell Gundari is one of these resorts where upon arrival, one says to oneself “OK, when will we come back again next year”! Excellent and friendly people, perfect facilities and minimal rooms, and very good breakfast-food. View of the Aegean sea is stunning! See you next year

I had really high expectations for our stay at Gundari and it did not disappoint! The hotel is amazing with gorgeous views of the Aegean, great facilities from the spa, to the pool and the gym. Really enjoyed the morning yoga classes on offer as well. The rooms were large, comfortable and beautifully furnished, and I loved all the attention to details in the design and service which made the stay so special. Food at the restaurant was delicious, great breakfast selection and it was alot of fun having cocktails before dinner on the terrace while taking in the view. The staff were very lovely, professional and always willing to help. I was very sorry to leave and will definitely be back!
