This New Jersey Beach Was Just Named One of the Most Underrated Beaches in the U.S.

"Located on Sandy Hook and managed by the National Park Service, this beach is considered a hidden gem and was ranked near the top of a BoatBooker list of best-kept coastal secrets. A portion known as Area "G" or South Gunnison has a long history as a clothing-optional spot—popular with nudists since the 1970s and 1980s for its relative privacy—and the Park Service acknowledges that usage, posting signs to inform visitors. Because the site is under NPS jurisdiction it is exempt from New Jersey's public nudity laws, though the Park cautions that nudity outside the traditional use area may be treated as disorderly conduct. Being the only legal nudist beach in the state, it draws crowds in summer despite its reputation for seclusion." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. This is a nude beach. I commonly used to take my friends and family members here when they visited me with intentions to allow them to experience body positivity. No matter the shape or size, love the naked body you are in, its what you have for now. DM me for nudes - that's a joke people. @LiveLongNFree @LiveLongNFree

Love that even when its “crowded” this beach always has the perfect atmosphere. It’s my favorite local escape and it’s community is great. Respect is the culture and I wouldn’t change it for the world

I always call a nude beach as the heaven on the Earth. This is one of those heavens for NJ and NY residents. The beach is wonderful and filled with lovely people walking, dancing, playing, reading, relaxing and being away from the city’s chaos. Opened to themselves, and people around, without having any boundaries of color, race, shapes, age and gender. This was our second experience to a nude beach after Haulover in Miami. I always regret coming here only once during my stay in US being so nearby. Parking: the parking is free but you need to pay $25 as entry fee before entering the premises. Restrooms: there are enough restrooms, changing area and showers close to all beach lots Location: the nude beach is the farthest beach once you enter from the main gate Good time to visit: Come around 12 or max by 2pm, the queue to the ticket counter can be longer beyond the usual. The beach closes by 8pm during Summer. We visited in the August. If you stay late you might see dolphins 🐬 near the shore. New York’s skyline at dark is another beautiful sight which you might not like to miss. Restrooms get locked by 7pm so make sure you finish your stuffs before then.

Today June 22,2024 I went alone in a car I’m writing this review to help those like myself that couldn’t find enough information online You pay for parking as the entrance fee. Apparently the beach is free which leads me to assume walkers and bikers don’t pay a fee but I’m not sure sorry. But for cars as you make your way to the entrance, every car goes through the pay toll. They don’t check your car just pay and enter. My suggestion to avoid the $20 car fee, bring your bike in your car and park somewhere else before entering to avoid the fee but it will be a longish bike ride. The good thing with the nude beach is that at the entrance there are bike posts and unlikely to be robbed because there’s people around and police cars at the beach. There is a bathroom and food there. It was very nude and very full of people. It was nice. I went alone and I was worried for my belongings to be stolen. I stayed close to my belongings. Only had my phone Sandals car keys and water. I sat near the beach with my stuff at eyes distance and all was fine. Had a great time. Enjoy. I put my stuff under my towel. Also the entire area is long and there are separate parts of it. It goes from a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i Only Gunnison is legally nude and it’s at the far back of the beach. Gunnison beach is kind of short tho i walked in less than 10 minutes to each end. Anyways it was fun.

Google
My favorite clothing optional beach! Although if you come to this beach and your clothed, most people will think you’re strange and you’re there just to stare at everyone else, so it would be in your best interest not to do so. Most people are friendly and looking for a nice tan, my husband and I go every year and it’s always been an awesome experience! Freeing and fun!

Google
Nice. Been going here several years, but ... there's too many creepers who make it conspicuously obvious they're creeping. I don't need to explain, it's very elementary to understand and know when you see one. They don't even try to hide being awkward. I also would no longer go here, cause God. ✝️

Google
Preface: I visited this beach on the 4th of July holiday to account for all of the excess traffic. It was absolutely gridlocked going to and coming from Gunnison but once there it was smooth sailing. There’s a long artificial turf/walkway to the beach to help with transporting items over sand. The nude beach was smaller than I expected but still both busy and not overcrowded. Be prepared to see a little bit of everyone and anybody though the beaches did skew towards gay men. Lots of free spiritedness but be thoughtful about the alcohol being to obvious.

Google
I did not come here for the clothing optional beach, but rather for the nice views of New York City and Long Island, which this offers, as well as North Beach. I liked the fact that ships were constantly going by as well. The winds were rather strong and washed up a lot of rubbish from the City, but it all collected on the upper side of the dunes, so it’s not too big of an issue. A lot of fishermen congregate on the top of the spot near where it meets the bay, and it’s nice for walking. Would recommend a visit either from the City or anywhere nearby. Cheers.

Yelp
Calling all Naturists in the Tri-state area!! Every visit has been pleasant to this tucked away locale. Go, go, go! There is parking for those that drive (Lot G), and a ferry from South Street Seaport with a shuttle from the pier, $50 round trip. Near the ferry there is an air-conditioned bar with snacks. There are gender-specific changing rooms and showers right at the entrance. Very limited refreshments are available on one food truck. It is fully clothing-optional to the right of the walkway, and there is a clothed area to the left. Bring a container to take all of your trash with you.

Yelp
Came here the First Sunday of January for the annual Polar Bare Plunge. About 80-100 people braved the cold and wind, with about 30-40 of us brave souls skinny dipping into the icy water. Air temps were in the low 30's water temps were showing 38deg on the nearest buoy. Great event overall lots of great people sharing in a wild yearly tradition.

Yelp
It was spacious and relaxing, clean sand but with wild waves. Rally cute sunsets to enjoy,

Yelp
Since this is a clothing-optional beach, I did not take any pictures. But I will tell you that I had a wonderful time. Firstly, I went to avoid screaming kids - it was so quiet and peaceful. I ate, I read, I got tanned. Secondly, I was one of a few people wearing light clothes (easing myself to join the crowd over time). The beach was very clean and quiet, as mentioned. I am still giving it five stars, even though men (mostly) and some women (a few) blatantly stared at people's parts as they walked by. The men were more obvious, as they walked around pretending they were looking for someone. If you see that, follow them with your eyes and you'll notice they came alone. So - exercise a little vigilance. One of the best beaches I ever visited!

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend truly love this beach we felt so free. We had a great time. The most liberating part of the experience was probably the feeling of being completely free and uninhibited, just embracing the natural surroundings without any judgment. It was so refreshing to let go of any worries and just enjoy the moment absolutely recommend !

Yelp
Visited for the first time yesterday with my girlfriend and had the most exhilarating time. It's so nice to be carefree and in a peaceful setting. Definitely got a couple people staring as I am significantly younger than most there but we would love to get more into this scene and meet more people as well as couples!

Yelp
This is a nude beach where you will find all kinds of people of all body types. Picture everyone at your supermarket naked. Get there early as parking lot fills quickly. A 1/4 mile walk from parking lot to beach edge. Bring chair, umbrella and liquids (no alcohol). Yesterday, 6/23/24 was the hottest day of the year so far, 101 degrees in asphalt parking lot. Beach is always packed and everyone was in the water. There is no pressure to disrobe - but then why come to this beach as the others at Sandy Hook are beautiful too. The surprise in coming to this beach for the first time (after 15 minutes or so) is the surprise that it feels so ordinary. What is shocking about a nude beach is that it isn't really shocking after all.
google avatar

Yelp
Hey hey Adventurers! So to preface this: this is not everyone's cup of tea. This is also not a space for you to gawk at. There is a sign that states nude beach goers so if you miss it and get huffy--don't. The nude beach is like fightclub, you don't talk about it. You don't stare, be creepy, do things you wouldn't do in public, and you're respectful. That's it. Now, with that being said this place is awesome. It's $20 at the gate--go SUPER early because sometimes the traffic at the bridge is horrid. If you decide to go more times get the pass ($100). You have access to the most of sandy hook with those passes. This does not include attractions or things like kayaking, research that first. Things to know: it's a hike from the car to the beach itself if you're flying solo. Get a backpack chair & cooler like I did, or those beach carts if you decide to bring a whole spread. You have the large parking lot with a small hike through the Everglades looking path, you'll cross a street and that's where all the bathrooms, outdoor showers (none inside), food trucks, and a person who sets up a stand. They usually have water, chairs, flip flops, and various other items. Again don't scoff at pricing bc you didn't come prepared. Note: these are rentals for certain items. You can use the bike paths for walking, skateboarding, and various other foot transpo, just be careful at the stop signs bc people don't stop. Weekdays there aren't rangers patrolling the beach and the stands/food trucks are not open. Weekends they are open and rangers are out patrolling like wildfire. They are not tolerant of alcohol on the beach so be EXTREMELY discreet. I am unsure if they fine you but they'll make you pour all of it out. Most people do adult therm cups so use your best judgement. Bathrooms are generally clean and well kept. I think the food trucks are cash only so it's good to have some on hand but yk it'll be beach prices so don't be surprised by them. When walking to beach wear shoes/sandals, something to cover your feet. I made the mistake of walking back to restroom without protection and my feet are STILL healing. Once on the beach you find a spot wherever you deem fit. It's YOUR choice to disrobe or wear as little or as much as you want. But zero judgement of anyone either way. You'll see tons of people with just towels, privacy screens, little huts, beach umbrellas, and more. Again it's all up to how you feel comfortable. Lifeguards are there and they leave at 6. There's a volley ball area and tons of room if you want to play frisbee, kick a ball, or other beach fun. Just be respectful and mindful of everyone's space. Have fun! PS this review is NOT encourage bringing alcohol to a PROHIBITED area. It is YOUR decision. If you see someone doing something inappropriate sexually tell the patrol. Or ask at the gate for advice when getting there.

Yelp
Place is awesome! No bathing suit required. Only drawback is the long walk in the sand to get to the beach.

Yelp
My partner and I finally made our first visit this year to the beach. Tucked at the north end of Sandy Hook as part of the federal Gateway National Recreation Area, Gunnison beach looks like any Jersey beach - blankets, chairs, umbrellas, coolers except allows clothing optional /nude though you can still go to it and keep your clothes on. The beach, and a nearby battery mounted with 6-inch "disappearing guns'' completed in 1904 located right next to concession area named after Capt. John Gunnison. At this location, there's a bathhouse with restrooms and changing rooms, outdoor rinse-off showers, soda vending machines, and a concession area. There's a stand where you can rent chairs and umbrellas for a reasonable fee. The water is more than a half mile from the parking lot. Yes, it IS a bit of a long walk. To help beachgoers pick up the pace instead of walking on the loose beach sand, you can walk on an ADA compliant mat for much of the way. Park Rangers patrol (on foot and truck) looking for alcohol as it's prohibited. The beach draws an incredibly eclectic crowd and quite friendly. You will run into people from all walks of life and all ages. There are usually many groups that go there and will set up areas with wind screens that they will setup camp in for the day. Admission is $20.00 per car from Memorial Day to Labor Day. On a clear day, you can see the New York City skyline. The beach itself is great and will definitely be back.

Yelp
In 1999, New Jersey passed a law that allows municipalities and counties to prohibit all types of nudism on state or local beaches in their jurisdiction. Gunnison Beach, however, is on land owned and managed by the federal government and therefore is not subject to state or local regulations. As a result, Gunnison became the only legal nude beach in the state. Also, since there is no law against alcohol on federal lands, consumption of alcoholic beverages is permitted. Yelp
TLDR: 5 Stars if you love people! NOTE: Gunnison is a nude beach, and there ARE mostly naked people there. If this isn't the type of environment you're comfortable in, or you're not looking to test your boundaries of comfort... this review isn't for you. Also, for folks used to Blacks Beach, the water isn't as clean and warm. For Haulover lovers- the weather isn't as reliable nor the beach as massive. And, for everyone, the walk on the matts to find your spot is a hike... but it's all worth it! Gunnison is a beautiful sandy beach, with a great view of the NY Skyline in the distance. It was easy to get to and had enough parking that even on a Saturday in mid-June, around 1:00 - we experienced plenty of parking @ lot G. But for us, the true beauty of this place was the people! Our experience felt less like a trip to the beach and more like a backyard family reunion. Now, we aren't talking Kardashian family, think more "the Osbourn's". (Google it for those too young to know reality TV prior to Kim) They aren't all perfectly shaped young models, but a wonderful group of humans with a common interest in an environment free enough for people to really be themselves. Yes, there was creepy uncle Earl seemingly leering inappropriately. There was saggy Grandma Sally & Grandpa Theo who got there when the beach opened, setting up the prime spots near the water and the nieces & nephews came a bit later setting up towards the back of the beach... thinking the rest of us didn't realize what was in those bottles they were drinking. But as a whole - THAT WAS THE CHARM. Everyone was welcome and even with creepy Earl, it felt safe and protective. We chatted with the folks who'd been coming for 20+ years and welcomed us on our first trip. We watched as people helped others set up umbrellas & tents, or carry coolers for others that didn't roll smoothly through the sand. People played makeshift versions of twister, horseshoes & uno while enjoying their time at the beach. Bottom line, 5 stars for the people alone. Everything else is icing. Gunnison WAS the melting pot that the country strives for. Every color, every sexual orientation, every gender, every age... nobody cared. There was a common appreciation for the opportunity to enjoy the beach, enjoy the sun, enjoy the freedom together - free from the judgment or negativity that exists in too many other places. Want to be happier in general? Our advice: Get off social media, take a trip to Gunnison and get naked! You'll thank us if you do.

Yelp
Gawking, leering, forced touching, online harassment, urination, masturbation, and secret photography/video taping are what you can expect here now. It's known, it's obvious, and legally there's little that can be done unless someone is actually assaulted. This is how it was explained by the lifeguards and rangers when I spoke with them directly. There is a group of regulars who discourage going to the police because the beach is in danger of being closed due to these problems. Supposedly no arrests have been made this year due to their intervention, meaning victims aren't coming forward and their harassers aren't facing consequences. Sucks for the nudists who are genuinely good people but clearly this environment is not under control. It's been a steady decline. Two years ago my then boyfriend (6'4, 250lbs) was cornered by a man in the bathroom who forced him to watch him masturbate. This year I was a victim of attempted forced touching/leering/video taping on two separate occasions, and a male friend was harassed/photographed. I'm not going back, and I can't recommend this to anyone who values their safety or privacy. Your gender, size, or the number of people you go with will not protect you. Going on a sleepy weekday doesn't matter - I haven't been on a weekend but I hear it's worse. I took a screen shot of a Yelp user who uploaded a dozen pictures of naked women when I came to post this (I flagged them and all but one has been removed, they were clearly taken without the women's knowledge). Seven months ago, this same user left me a Yelp compliment saying he has "Seen me" at the beach. His review says how great it is that there are "no boundaries" here. People do have boundaries, choosing not to honor them is the reason this place is no longer safe, and this is exactly the type of person who is making it that way. I cannot stress this enough: YOU ARE VERY LIKELY TO BE RECORDED IN SOME WAY AND YOUR IMAGES POSTED ONLINE. This year they prohibited alcohol and smoking in an effort to control the downward spiral. People still get drunk/high but they complain about having to be sly about it. They outlawed certain types of wind screens and umbrellas that can block you from being seen and try to keep people separated so they don't have sex, which people also complain about. What measures are the regulars OK with to stop harassment other than victims just being "cool" about it? It's a shame, but this place has become predatory trash.

Teresa B.

Yelp
Well I went here in my '30s and I hope everybody knows by now it's a nude beach very nice then Don't know what it's like now. So I have to say that was about 40 years ago
google avatar

Eddie R.

Yelp
Gunnison Beach is a Clothing-Optional Beach in New Jersey. This is the only Clothing-Optional Beach in the North-Eastern Seaboard. The U.S. National Park Service maintains Sandy Hook Beach (Gunnison Beach). The U.S. Park Police patrols Sandy Hook Beach. I regard Gunnison Beach as my happy place, outside of Hedonism II.
google avatar

Kirkland G.

Yelp
Honestly, after beaching nude you will never want to wear swim attire to a beach again. I had some reservations writing this review because I thought: do I want people to know I go to a nude beach? But screw it we are all grown folks here, right? This beach is clean and the people that go are always super friendly. Everyone there is mature about nudity. It's still clothing optional so it's up to your comfort level. The walk from the parking lots/bathrooms to the beach is long. However, they finally extended the tarp along the walking path. The Gateway National Park Service has recently banned alcohol and tents at Gunnison since people don't know how to act (you can only imagine). So be prepared to see a police presence at the beach. Nothing intrusive, but they will be on the lookout for appropriate beach gear and obvious alcohol consumption. Anyway, drop the pretenses and bathing suits and go have fun.
google avatar

Kitty G.

Yelp
Great place during week when not as crowded, highly recommended. Have made many friends! Weekends can be killer with the low bass music thumping everywhere.
google avatar

Chels C.

Yelp
Here are some things to consider: Killer views of NYC skyline, $15 to enter and park (all day pass), there's a food truck, no alcohol, there is a site dedicated to people posting when and where they will be along the beach (sometimes they even post about who they are and what they're looking for), parking at Lot G (Gunnison Beach) fills up quickly on the weekends, it's a 15 minute drive to get to that lot and once you park its another 10-15 minutes just to get past the nude sunbathers sign to find a spot, not the cleanliest (hardly no trash cans on the beach), and you'll probably be approached by multiple people (especially if you're a woman). You know those horrible things (tan lines) you get from wearing bathing suits? Well you can get rid of those here. Clothing-optional? That's what its classified as but lets be real, if you're coming here you won't see many with their clothes on. Must you be a nudist to go to a nude beach? No. Must you be a sexual freak? No. Must you have no inhibitions? Yes! It's an extremely quite beach; eerily quite. Why? Most people are less likely to speak and more likely to gawk. The culture here is just as awkward; leave the beach toys (boogie boards, inflatable devices) at home. We're adults and there are Lifeguards, so why no gear in the water? While people claim oh you won't see sex on the beach....you'll pretty much see as close to it, without the act of. This is surely not for everyone, but ironically you will find just about anyone here.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Reading the reviews below, it is clear there are two distinct cultures at this beach: the gay side and the straight side. I know nothing about the straight side. The gay side does not have the critical mass of bad actors described by a lot of the straight side women in these yelp reviews. The beach itself is nicer than the NYC beaches and it is delightful to be nude. Almost everyone at this spot does do nude sunbathing. Very pretty views of the city. They don't have anywhere to throw away garbage, even by the showers and bathrooms, so remember what you bring in you will have to pack out, and it's a decent walk away from the common areas, so be prepared. Bring real shoes for the walk. The gays are very friendly, and is one of the friendliest places and easiest places to meet new people in the NYC area, I have found. Police harassment is an increasing problem, every year it seems to get worse (I've been going probably 5 or 6 years now). Rangers preposterously wander around the naked people in their bulletproof vests, in pairs or groups, randomly asking to search bags and cite people for ultraminor infractions like having a beer or a cigarette. They treat everyone like a potential criminal, not the guests, clients and citizens we are. The best years of Gunnison are probably behind us, like the best years of NYC. But I guess nothing is forever. Enjoy it now before it's totally regulated out of meaningful existence, which will probably be in the next few years if things continue on their current trajectory.

Nasreen D.

Yelp
The only nudist beach in NJ. I love coming here, but finding a perfect spot (location, location, location!) is pretty important. In an area nearest to the entrance back to the parking lot, people aren't really nudists, if you know what I mean... they bother me sometimes and they are fully clothed. Feels like they're gawkers really. On the other side, on the further end, this seems to be a spot for gay men, which is great because there are less gawkers in that area. Just something I noticed based on my experiences. However, I did find a group of women who go regularly, so hopefully I'll be able to make new girlfriends next summer! Oh beware! The sand is very hot! If you have access card, you can get a pass or seasonal pass at half the price off. I'm getting a seasonal pass next season for sure!
google avatar

Mervin M.

Yelp
It's a beach and nudity is allowed. What's not to love? Pro tip: Bring LOTS of sunscreen and a willing partner to help you apply it. You never know when you might miss a spot.

Amy S.

Yelp
I will start by saying that I am not fond of the NJ shore beaches. I am also very shy and reserved and the idea of clothing optional was not appealing. However, my experience here was completely unexpected. What I liked most is that it's clean and quiet and there is absolutely no fat shaming. People all ages and body shapes are respectful and enjoy the tranquility that this beach offers. If I didn't live two hours away I would absolutely be a regular visitor.

Darien W.

Yelp
Is there dogging going on at the beach like in Europe with wives and girlfriends and hedonistic women
google avatar

Vanessa F.

Yelp
I enjoyed this beach before it became overcrowded and full of trash, hence the two stars for a time when it was a place for peace, relaxation and freedom to be nude without the same people continuously walking by your towel with their eyes on your jewels...but unfortunately now it's been tainted by people who don't know how to clean up after themselves and can't keep their eyes to themselves. I suggest if you go, arrive before the crowd and by that I suggest going for sunrise. The last time I went I was able to get a free parking pass since I arrived before 7am, not sure if that's still the case but will be worth your while for the peaceful rising sun! Bring a bag and take your trash with you, respect the earth!
google avatar

Warren C.

Yelp
I've visited other clothing optional beaches before. But this one felt different and more exciting and more mature.

Yelp
When I mention that I love Gunnison Beach, people look at me as if I'm some sort of sex fiend. Which is ridiculous, naturally. I'm a man, so of course I'm a sex fiend. But that being said, just because you like hanging out in a place where everyone's hanging out...it's not a sex thing. Gunny Beach is a beautiful beach at the north point of the Jersey Shore. Most people aren't wearing a stitch of clothes. Everyone is, as a rule, friendly. And no one is jumping one other. At least not in front of everyone. In fact, I'd make the claim that Sleaseside and Asbury Park are much more sex-crazed, cruisy areas. Most people at Gunnison are chill and friendly people who enjoy being around other friendly people--while being nude. And the thing is this: Being nude among other nude people takes away barriers in conversation. When you have nothing to hide behind when you meet people, that vulnerability allows for a much more open experience. No one is shaming one another. I have yet to meet a rude piece of garbage at Gunnison. And if there are some creeper people who are jerky...everyone looks after one another. There's nowhere else like it down the shore. You should go at least once. It's such a different beach experience.

Yelp
Smoking and vaping is now illegal with steep fines. Smoking at Sandy Hook will be permitted only in designated areas in the parking lots. You can face a fine of $250 and up to a $1000 on the third offense per/person.
google avatar

Herbert J.

Yelp
Nice, relaxed and comfortable. Go on an overcast day, but I get that the fun is being in the sun more.
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
I love this place... no tan lines! I feel completely comfortable and safe going on my own, and have been going for years. I always meet great people. There are federal officers patrolling the beach, watching carefully for any inappropriate activity, arrests are swift. Behave yourselves while here. There are families, a wide range of ages, and body shapes and sizes. Bring you own food and carry out all your garbage. I suggest some sort of rolling cooler. Sometimes there are food trucks - sometimes not. The showers are as to be expected. It's a really long walk from the parking lot to the beach area, def wear sand appropriate comfortable footwear. Arrive early, as parking does fill up quickly! TIP: bring spray sun tan lotion! You can have your neighbors spray those delicate hard to reach back areas! TIP: as you walk to the beach - everyday people and (occasionally) families are toward the left, lifestylers in the center, and gay friendly to the right! Have fun!
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
My experience at this beach was terrible. The beach was ok, definitely mostly men and some creeps. The worst was the rangers, they checked you before you go on the beach for alcohol then walk around the beach randomly asking to search your belongings. I'm pretty sure that's not even legal. Anyway if you like police harassment this is your spot!

Barbara G.

Yelp
love it so free no one gawking no fones out just free... so clean and i felt a sense of safety there.

Yelp
Great area to relax free and nude. Clean for the most part and enjoyed sand volleyball

Yelp
My experience wasn't as good as others'. Maybe the day was just too hot. I was just there August 1st and got there around 1pm. There were still a lot of parking although when we left around 3pm there was no parking. The walk from parking to the beach was really long and gave me a blister so remember to bring some types of shoes other than flip flops. The sand was golden brown and clean but full of big broken pieces of shells (0.5 to 1 inch diameter) which really hurts my blister. THIS IS BIG: A lot of bugs biting us so remember to bring bug spray.

Yelp
A very very beautiful beach in North Jersey. You can actually see Manhattan from the shore. Behind the actual beach boasts a great trail for biking and walking. Lots of nature. Very green. I visited the nude portion of the beach. While I enjoyed myself, this particular nude beach was a little more interactive and social than what I've seen at other nude beaches. It was a bit annoying. I did find out from a regular that this was NOT typical. I happened to be visiting during a Swingers Convention. Warning: Be prepared for a very long walk to the shore from your car, with about 2/3 of the trip walking in sand. Pack LIGHT!

Yelp
Nice beach with a cool vibe. The water wasn't too crazy, a few big waves here and there. I went with a friend and we were topless, and are both young. Apparently we were on the 'older' side. If you don't want to be hackled by older men do yourself a favor and go to the 'gay' side. If you are looking at the ocean it's to the right. That way they won't bother you. It's also where the younger crowd is. We were getting asked too many questions by creepy older men. This old man practically touched my boob w/o permission. Also alcohol is NOT allowed contrary to what some people say. If you do you have to hide it. Literally everyone's nakey..it's fun.

Yelp
I have never been to a clothing-optional beach before, so when I was out in New Jersey for vacation and a friend brought up the idea, I was like...why not?! Even though it was new experience, it was a refreshing one. There was a wide variety of body types on the beach and there seemed to be a lot less body shaming on this beach than that of a beach where some type of swimming attire is required. If I'm ever in the area again, you might see me again at this beach!

Yelp
First and foremost, this is a partially nude beach. By partial, I do not mean semi-nude. Oh no, it's full on! What I mean is, a rather (large) portion of the beach is clothing optional! Kind of funny when you stumble upon this unknowingly as we did....so, now you know! If you've never done it, it's so unbelievably freeing!! Really kind of awesome. I know it's not for everyone, but this hippie chick was all about it! I say it's a must! It was something I always wanted to try, I just didn't think I would be trying it so close to home. Do it! YOLO! (kidding). Just don't forget to put some sunscreen on those places that rarely get sun! Ouch! You think nude beach, you think tropical destinations, Europe, Brazil. You certainly don't think of anything just outside of Manhattan or North Jersey. With that being said, don't expect hot Brazilian models either. The beach is for anyone who wants to be a little bold. You will see it all. (Some maybe you wish you never have.) No one is judge-mental. Everyone is doing the same damn thing. The entire experience is pretty darn cool especially when you realize you're just a hop, skip and a jump away from NYC which is where we were living at the time. (The beach is actually located in north Jersey, closest to Sandy Hook.) The beach is fairly clean and it's free! There is a fee to park however. It was $10 back then so I'm assuming it's most definitely more now. Alcohol was allowed on the beach and I vividly remember a man strolling selling wieners if you were hungry. True story. Dying. There is a section strictly for clothed people and the nude section is very clearly marked. But I say, be free! Do it! Anyone can just go to any beach, when was the last time you splashed in the waves au natutrale? Channel that free spirit in you!

Yelp
What a fantastic place! Clothing is optional but if you're the only one walking around clothed... you will definitely be the one being stared at. Don't go to gawk, literally everyone is nude here.

Yelp
The first thing you have to get over is the fact that people are nude. And if you are coming here, you will be too (It is optional to go nude though). Go with an open mind. Everyone is here for the exact setup reason as you are. Now, the beach itself is a nice beach. It's a bit of a walk though. Wear your flip-flops for the walk, because the sand is hot as fuck on your feet. And there is a food truck at the entrance if you need a snack. You are allowed to bring alcohol on the beach, which is fantastic. Just clean up after yourselves. If you do bring a cooler for things, make sure it has wheels... unless you wanna show off and carry a cooler. The people that go here have always been friendly to me. Most of the time everyone keeps to themselves though. Also, f you think there are going to be creeps here, you're right. But there aren't that many and everyone here looks out for one another. If you are really worried about people creeping, bring a privacy blind. With that said, the beach is not just older folk. There's a wide range of people that go here.

Yelp
I enjoyed 2 weekend days at this beach in July of 2016 with friends who live in Pennsylvania. This summer managed only one day and it was a Monday. Much smaller crowd but nice sunny weather and friendly folks, many were buddies of the friends I went with. It is a really long walk from where we parked to the water so carry the lightest weight things you can manage. No trash cans so anything you take to the beach you have to take out also. Nice to look over and see the NYC skyline from the beach.. Highly recommend it to others....

Yelp
Very nice, chill beach. The walk from the entrance to the beach was a good 3-5 mins, but once you get settled its all bliss. It's not too crowded and as expected everyone is mature and just there to have a good beach experience. Great for couples and even small groups. The surrounding town seems ok, there are quite a few eateries that I'd like to try the next time I go.

Yelp
I'm a nudie! You're a nudie! We're all nudies!! And we're on Gunnison Beach. There is literally no cover on the beach so make sure to bring some (umbrella, extra towel, shirt). There was a guy with a table who seemed to be renting stuff but I didn't stop to ask. It's a day at the beach ... especially if you take the ferry from NYC ... so be prepared. (We had all that and more.) The day I went it was overcast and in fact started pouring right after we decided to go home early. (It was also my first time on the Jersey Shore. Was that the Jersey Shore?) Everyone on that beach was squeezed into the bathrooms as it rained if you didn't have umbrellas or something. We were lucky to be prepared. A portion of the beach is cordoned off for endangered species nest which means you can't really walk far down the shore because of a rope that goes to the water. The walk from the bathrooms to the beach is probably ten minutes if you're lolly gagging. The beach is not THAT rocky/broken shell-y. Yes there are some and I would definitely wear sneakers but there was less than I expected.

Yelp
Used to be good, now too much trash and too many rules. Overcrowded particularly when the ferries let off on weekends. Very dirty ruled over by stormtrooper NPS Rangers who seem to want to make up rules as they go along. No tents, No umbrellas close together, despite the lack of space, no radios. Full of gawkers and pests who stalk. The bathrooms are filthy with strewn garbage. Last year I almost cut my foot on broken glass despite the no glass container rules. The water in the best of times is brackish and filthy. Long haul over hot sand to the waters edge. Shame it's the only one of it's kind, with such appalling conditions, I've decided to keep my swim suit on and opt for cleaner beaches in New Jersey.

Yelp
We love it there. So laid back. The only downside is that alcohol has been banned, but still a great place. Can't wait to go again.

Yelp
I have always went to sandy hook since I was a child, but I never heard of this area until last year. A friend recommended me with him and his friends to this beach. At first when I heard about this special place to be a nude beach, I was little nervous to enter, but boy was I wrong. These lovely nudists and beach-loafers were extremely welcoming and friendly on the beach. What was surprisingly about this beach was that there was actually a small community of people who come to this beach frequently when the day is good. Another plus was that we are allow to bring alcohol onto the beach, but it can not be glass for safety precautions. Also, if you are afraid of not knowing the borderline of this beach there will be signs, so there is no need to fret and just relax. As for the beach, it is very clean and the water is clean, but ladies and gentlemen, please, don't take you clothes off until you are a few yards away from the entrance of the beach. There maybe children and civilians present around there. Plus the entrance to the beach doesn't really have fine sand so it might hurt the bottom of your feet, so bring flip flops. Oh and don't forget sunblock, you don't want to get kissed by the sun too much if you know what I mean.

Yelp
After going to a nude beach, I don't ever wanna wear a swimsuit ever again! The beach itself is lovely: sizable, clean, and the rocks/shells didn't bother me much like other people report here. I went with 2 other women friends and we were frequently having to ward off "friendly" middle-aged men who wanted to introduce themselves or invite us over for beer. I had one guy come up to me and tell me that I had "the nicest cookie on the beach." And by "cookie" he didn't mean baked goods. A group of 2 young guys and 1 girl behind us were randomly approached by a dude showing off his ben-wa balls. Another introduced himself as DTM which he said meant "down to munch" (!!!) Women: be prepared for this and don't be afraid to ignore them or tell them to go away. Lewd behavior & comments aren't allowed and you are encouraged to report it to the lifeguards - they will kick 'em out. Wish I had known that most of the gay people go to the right end of the beach. TIP: The parking lot itself isn't marked as being for Gunnison, but it's the last one on the left before you wind up at some ocean institute. To get to the beach from the lot, you have to cross the road you drove in on, go down a bit, and it'll be on your left with the bathhouses.

Yelp
I did enjoy myself very much; was a bit hesitant at first but once I opened up i was super comfortable. The people were cool and friendly and some came up to us and introduce themselves. but there was a con. a few creepy annoying older men. I want to come out there and enjoy myself and not be talked to in a sexual manner... Another annoying thing is the blue mat situation, I really wish they'd hurry up and afford to put another few feet down because that walk was brutal. Wasn't as bad as i thought it would be but still...annoying lol. Beware of the racoons at night near the bathrooms :-/ Going to go back again this weekend, but i'm going to sit further down to the right side....seems to be more young people and fun people over there.
