Whenever my mom is in town (which is practically never), she has a list of certain places she has to visit to eat and drink. Gunther's always makes the list.
My mom's favorite order is the Lemon Custard in a waffle cone, while my favorite order is a cup of Lemon Custard paired with Swiss Orange Chip.
These days, you can find Gunther's at coffee and dessert shops all over the greater Sacramento area, but nothing is as good as ordering it fresh from the shop.
In fact, I only order the Lemon Custard flavor when I can get it straight from the source. After a day or two in the carton, it starts to develop ice crystals, which affect the texture and flavor.
So, it's highly preferable to order it directly from Gunther's (where it sells out too fast to go bad).
The line is usually long, and often stretches out onto the street, but it moves pretty quickly. I don't think I've ever waited longer than about ten minutes in line.
Gunther's sells hand-packed pints and quarts of ice cream, but, in my experience, the texture seems to change after a day or two in the freezer at home, especially once it's opened.
Recently, I was in the area, so I decided to stop by. As you can see from the pictures, I ordered my favorite order, which is a cup of Lemon Custard with Swiss Orange Chip.
It was perfect, as usual.
