"This resort, fresh off an eighteen million dollar renovation, is the sister property to Gurney's Montauk (they run a helicopter service between the two). The Goat Island location has been the site of military forts since the Revolutionary War, largely due to its stellar views of Narragansett Bay. Gurney’s has taken full advantage of their island site by adding an outdoor saltwater pool, patios and, their own marina which can accommodate boats up to 125 feet. We love the wellness-oriented details like complimentary bikes, weekend yoga, and aromatherapy treatments at the seawater spa. Aside from being well prepped for weddings, the resort is a great getaway option for families with kids: there's arts-and-crafts, sailing lessons, and so much more available. Downtown Newport is just across the bridge, but the views and the restaurants at Gurney's make it hard to leave."

Fourth of July Likely to Be the Busiest Travel Weekend Since March

"Bookings have been extremely strong, probably a pace we haven’t seen in the seven years that we’ve been doing this since we bought Gurney’s," says George Filopoulos, owner of Gurney's Resorts, which has two properties in Montauk, New York, and one in Newport, Rhode Island. "The Fourth of July holiday at this point is pacing ahead about 25 percent over last year."

No hair dryer , phone in room didn't work, wall plug didn't charge my phone and watch overnight, no coffee in the room. I am generally a Marriott enthusiast, however, this was very disappointing! The woman in the pastry shop and the view were the only positives here

We have been loyal guests at your Montauk location for several years, so we were pleasantly surprised to find the same level of excellence at your Newport location. The check-in process was seamless, the staff were friendly and attentive, the location was stunning, and the grounds were well-maintained with plenty of spaces to relax without feeling overcrowded during peak season. The pool water temperature was even adjusted to suit the current weather conditions. To be entirely truthful, we couldn't think of a single thing that could be improved upon. This review is completely unsolicited.

Wrong room. Dishonesty. Neglect. An inferior room than advertised, booked, and paid for, was initially provided. The concierge even claimed that the wrong room was right. The cleaning staff and direct observation contradicted the assertion. The correct substitute room was ultimately provided. However, only after repeatedly requesting it from different concierge representatives; neither of which was aware of the other’s alleged note of the promise; neither of which phone called, as promised, to make the change. Otherwise, largely a good place.

We ate outside overlooking the bay and bridge, it was beautiful. Food was ok. It took for ever for it to arrive. Service workers are slow and not attentive to details. Leaving drink glasses and dirty dishes etc. many better places in town with beautiful views

Stopped by to view the hotel for upcoming event and had very nice staff and restaurant with nice cafe for breakfast along with mini game room along with billiards table and more to do. Indoor pool, outdoor pool, spa and more! Next to marina, pretty views.

We loved our weekend at this hotel. We had a wonderful experience. The office manager, Victor, was extremely pleasant and helpful. The views were spectacular, even on a brisk fall day. The food and drinks were delicious. All of the staff was willing to help, with a smile on their faces. My kids loved the indoor pool and my husband enjoyed his massage at the spa. Our post Thanksgiving trip was perfect thanks to this property and its staff!

Google
Wish I could rate it higher but it is what it is. Super pricey spot that is just kind of old. Dated, cramped rooms that are in need of a much needed makeover. My room was super dark, even with the shades drawn wide open. My TV was broken along with the phone. A/C was ice cold which was nice. The outdoor pool was spectacular and obviously the main draw to staying here. There are plenty of nicer places but what's the point if you're there in summer and not getting some rays and pooling. Indoor pool was hot and muggy, a little ventilation would go a long way. The staff was amazing and the food was fantastic. I brought our dog and it was totally pet friendly and super convenient. Plenty of nice grassy spots. I'd stay there again but was just expecting more for an establishment with this price. Needless to say, the views and location make it.

Google
We enjoyed our stay here near the holidays and particularly appreciated the staff. From the bar tenders, to the front desk staff, to the shuttle drivers and valets, everyone was so helpful and accommodating. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet, and the view was gorgeous, but the bathroom was tiny and had 1 hook in the entire room and almost no counter space,. The bedroom itself was dark and could have used another lamp or 2. Small concerns but our stay certainly wasn't inexpensive. We didn’t have time to eat in the main restaurant but the bar was cozy and lively and the food was great.

Yelp
Had an amazing experience at Newport Harbor Island's Spa! I have decided that in January, I will take more time to treat myself, and also explore more of Newport's local hotels (restaurants, bar, and wellness offerings) in the slower season. I booked a spa service here and it was wonderful! They are currently offering a deal for a $122 50 min. Massage or Facial, and honestly, who could say no? The spa is newly renovated and gorgeous, with plenty of seating in the reception area, lots of cute products for sale, and a lovely Coastal Grandmother aesthetic that permeates throughout the venue. Keely, the receptionist, is a delight, and got me checked in promptly and gave a thorough overview of the spa and amenities. You are able to utilize the super clean locker room (featuring high tech locker locks!), sauna (amazing!), relaxation room, indoor pool, and fitness room along with your service, of course. An extra plus to the robes, which are plush, comfy, and brand new. You are then able to hang out in their relaxation room, which is done up in calming shades of taupe and grey. Pro tip- bring a book, there is no reading material or anything else but to just close your eyes and relax. I am glad I had a library book with me :) Michaela was my massage therapist, and she did an excellent job. I have a bad shoulder from all my desk work, and she was able to ease some of the discomfort I was feeling. The treatment rooms are very relaxing as well, and I loved the features like the heated lavender eye masks! Newport Harbor Island's spa is a lovely retreat from the drudgery of New England winter- I'll be back for sure!

Yelp
I stayed here recently for the first time since the change in ownership. This place is now ... ok. We first came here when it was Gurney's and loved everything about it. Since then it feels like it's become more of a Marriott vibe. It's not the worst thing in the world but it did feel like a bit of a step down in overall quality. The location and views are of course still lovely as ever but the service was just ok. It's lost its sparkle but hopefully it's just in a transition phase and gets back on track soon. To be fair I'll note a few positives that stood out: it's very kid / dog friendly, they set up cute letters to Santa area after Thanksgiving, there's fun bar area with pool tables, darts, fireplace etc.

Yelp
The whole process to stay at thus place was frustrating. We were going to this hotel because of a wedding. When we first tried to make a reservation they didn't answer the phone after several attempts I decided to leave a message. They called back and said they were under construction and would be available during these times. We called them up during those times and still could not reach them. When finally making a reservation a few months later, they charged us twice, so we had to get them to fix that. Once we got to hotel, we get a room right next to elevator. Most hotels near elevator are around the corner. This was directly in front. So in the morning , pretty loud. The rooms were average and come to find out, we had bed bugs. The workers seemed like they didn't really want to be there, which is important when running a resort. Overall way below expectations.

Yelp
8/4/24: Great casual meal at the Torpedo Bar and Lounge. A group of us came to have dinner. We dined outside. Reservations are must. The Torpedo Bar and Lounge is very nice for casual indoor and outdoor dining. A couple of us ordered fish and chips. In addition, the double baked eggplant was ordered. Think it was the best fish and chips I ever had. Everything was so light and crisp. Not the least bit greasy. The highlight of the evening was the Old fashioned Strawberry Shortcake. The fresh biscuit within the dessert, made it unique and special. Service was very good. Valet parking is your best bet here. Come to the Torpedo Lounge for delicious food, service and wonderful sunsets! PS: We didn't stay at the resort, so I can't comment on accommodations.

Yelp
Last night, the entire hotel needed to be evacuated from 10 PM to 11:30 PM due to a fire alarm. We were awakened from a sound sleep. It was dramatic, racing around the room to get essential things, such as medicine, car, keys, etc. to flee the hotel. We made our way down the stairs to the lobby where hundreds of people were milling about. Most of them were children, mostly boys, around 10 to 12 years old. The hotel appears to have been hosting kids from Connecticut for a sports event. Before the alarm, they were poorly supervised, and running around the halls of the hotel without adult supervision I suspect that some of the kids triggered a false alarm. There was no leadership or direction from the Hotel staff, who had no idea what was going on. The fire department came and left. Ultimately, the fire alarm was turned off, and people trudged back to their rooms. None of the staff explained why this happened. Fire alarm aside, the resort has a Marriott vibe. Soulless. And it is quite expensive. I would never recommend that anyone stay here.

Yelp
Just spent the weekend at NHIR....I don't totally understand the reviews that are bad. I get it, things take long and things happen....but this place is awesome! And hands down the best place to stay in Newport. And I'm a Marriott loyalist! I've also been coming to this property yearly since it was a Hyatt...almost 20 years. Gurneys gave it a big upgrade, but it's even better now! Covered seating on the porch, the added touches in the lounge - more stuff for children! We stayed in a King in the lighthouse wing, I loved the room....very spacious, great location near the pool and all amenities. Everyone could not have been nicer. Everyone at the pool was great - which the pool is also even better with the added deck which looks onto the bay and adds a ton more chairs! Bar service was great all weekend....and sure sometimes it look a bit for drinks - but it's Newport in the summer - relax.... We also stayed over the 4th in the rooms with the balcony on the other side of the hotel - loved what they did with those rooms as well! We already can't wait to find time to get back there. It's expensive but in my eyes, worth it....and not really less than the other options. You won't regret the sunset views and the beautiful accommodations!

Yelp
The newly renovated resort on Goat Island is stunning!! From the beautiful outdoor patios with a bar, live music, comfy couches and gas fire pits - to the amazing outdoor pool area and lawn area with hammocks for lounging - this is absolutely the place to be for a beautiful Newport day, especially at Sunset. The interior is also tastefully, remodeled with gorgeous coastal and nautical vibes in the indoor lounge and bar with a pool table and dartboards and a very cute café for snacks in the morning. The renovated guest rooms are also stunning with views of the harbor. Everything feels so brand new and modern. I can't wait to return

Yelp
First hotel I have stayed at in over five years that doesn't have a smart TV. It's like traveling back in time and not in a good way. Rooms are upgraded but in a cheap way.

Yelp
Very nice meals at Torpedo, the Fish & Chips were cooked to perfection as was the eggplant and the chicken dish was a nice rub and potato and vegetables were just perfect . Our server Allison did a wonderful job with our menu questions. The view of Rose Island and the Pell Bridge is spectacular.

Yelp
I've stayed at Gurneys many times. I'm appalled at how bad the service is now at this place. I sat at Torpedo club two different times and was ignored for 30+ minutes both times. At one point we were told the kitchen was backed up an hour 30 mins AFTER we ordered. Our room was tiny and didn't have soap in the bathroom. I will never stay here again. Truly, I think I'm pretty lenient about service, but this is some of the worst I've ever dealt with. I can't believe I had to spend money to stay here. EDIT: they also charged an additional resort fee several days later after I paid in full on Expedia. Continuously disappointed in this hotel.

Yelp
I really can't understand the poor reviews but it appears they were written during construction or renovation's?!? My family stayed here for 2 nights the week of the 4th and our family had rented a room as well, we were all really pleasantly surprised by this hotel!! The ambiance and resort style vibe you get here- is not something you can get anywhere else in Rhode Island! Aside from maybe 1 or 2 other places in RI- this is more of a high end resort type unparalleled experience - that you can only get HERE!!! The grounds are perfect for family's and/or couples to lounge/check out the scenery. The outdoor patio & view is definitely worth the money -when you stay here! Our room had an amazing view- almost 360 degree views of the ocean & the bridge! The yard and activities are inviting! My son loved playing corn hole in the yard, going in and out of the pool & then playing soccer on the lawn. They have a very clean & surprisingly warm outdoor pool- which was very crowded- but the following day it wasn't so bad. They also have an old lighthouse on their property with stunning 360 degree water views- it was so quiet, peaceful and relaxing when we walked to it! I've heard this place is pricey & what we paid for 2 days wasn't bad at all & for what you're getting with the outdoor bars & pool & decks - it's worth it! The food and drink here is AMAZING. I am a typical Rhode Island FOODIE & I am used to the best food in the state & I can say this place Definitely had WONDERFUL food! We had an amazing dinner here on the deck one night- it was delicious- I got the petit filet & shrimp cocktail & we also had lunch one day by the pool and it was great! The bartenders here are amazing! Their strawberry daiquiri's are delicious! They make a great drink here!!! The bartenders are very friendly and fun! I would rate our room 8.5/10- it was on the smaller side but it was clean/comfortable & new/updated! I was just looking at the other reviews and I am thinking- they had to have stayed in another building- because everything in our room was working great! Air conditioner, water & we had zero issues during the 3 days we were there! Staff was very helpful- during every encounter! Another plus with this resort is they offer complimentary water taxi's! I'm not sure if any other resorts in Newport offer water taxi's but I loved that we could just hop on a boat and in 10 mins we could be in the heart of Newport!! We utilized the water taxi's the entirety of our trip! My only complaint would be the coffee bar downstairs. It's expensive & AWFUL- like undrinkably bad! It would be nice to see a DD or Starbucks or just basic inexpensive GOOD coffee! Everyone I was with agreed with me on that one! Stay away from the coffee bar on the first floor!! I did see a wedding party here at some point during our stay, I'm due to get married next year and still don't have a venue- I'm wondering if they host weddings on the back deck or lawn? That would be gorgeous!!! So the highlights of our 3 day stay would definitely be: *PET FRIENDLY RESORT*, outside deck, fire pit tables, pool cabanas, large daybeds in the yard, use of the water taxi's, the food and drinks, outdoor pool, & the ocean resort vibe, I would definitely stay here again! 5/5! My new favorite spot in Newport!

Yelp
This place..... there are no words to describe the frustration of staying here. 1. They couldn't find my reservation which I have written confirmation of. 2. For TWO DAYS I have been trying to get a laundry ticket (bag is in closet but no ticket) only to be told they do not have a laundry service today. I don't know of a hotel that supposedly caters to guests that does not offer this service. 3. Left this morning about 10am. Back around 4pm. Room still not attended to. 4. Ordered a drink OFF OF THE COCKTAIL MENU last night only to be told today, they have no such drink WTF!! There are two dining establishments on premise. They both have live music which was so LOUD you were unable to chat over dinner. 5. Tried to talk to staff who explained they do not speak English. I can hear the people next door well enough to tape their conversations for playback if anyone wanted. The view is amazing but there are many hotels in Newport with awesome views. While they may have renovated the hotel, the rooms are nice, they might have spent time on improving customer service. For the price and advertising, I expected something well above what we are getting.

Yelp
We came in for a drink and to watch the sunset, but stayed for the delicious food, cocktails and mocktails. Our server, Natasha was Excellent - she really made our night. She made great suggestions - including the pumpkin cheesecake - and really took care of us. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We booked this trip months ago, shortly after booking I had noticed they offered a "heroes discount" for first responders. I called many times over the course of a week to change my booking to this promotion. My call was finally returned on a Sunday afternoon. I was told to bring my badge with me on check in. This discount included early check in, late check out, a room upgrade, 15% off and a bottle of wine. Fast forward to our check in, we called early in the day to see if early check in would be available. They said we will add you to a cue when you get here, we arrived around 2pm and our room was ready. When we brought up the heroes discount and checking my badge, the front desk person, Jeff, seemed very unaware of this promotion. He was lacking any personality. The rooms are very nicely done after the remodel. But they are also very small. I don't think we received an upgraded room because we had a direct view of the hvac system on the roof. The bathroom doors don't close either. And the only mirror in the room is the one in the bathroom. We head down to the pool on our first day and it was very crowded. It is advertised as a family friendly resort so understandable. We waited close to 45 minutes for a waiter to come over to us before we got up to sit at the pineapple club for lunch. A waiter finally then had come to our lounge chairs. 2 drinks, a sandwich and a small pizza... over $100. Another morning here, we decided to get breakfast down in the lobby. 2 coffees (that were terrible), a cinnamon roll and a breakfast sandwich... over $45. The location of the hotel is about the only perk, everything is walkable from the resort. On the day of check out, we stopped at the desk and asked what time is late check out. The same front desk receptionist goes "check out is 11" again no regard to the promotion. As I sit by the pool before I check out, the water is a cloudy shade of green. Lastly, huge shout out to Cullen in valet- he was great. I've been to Newport many times over the last few years, I'm sure I will return to Newport again... but I will not be staying at this hotel.

Maggie A.

Yelp
Worst customer service I have ever experienced. Called 5 times about our reservation and was disconnected 5 times. Refused one of 10 wide open tables with a view. Manager questioned if I actually called. Now sitting at a table next to service door no waiter it's been 20 minutes. If you would prefer to not be insulted and actually order food avoid at all cost. Update food came stone cold. Every single dish.

Yelp
My fiance and I stayed here this Mother's Day weekend and LOVED the experience. We are getting married in Newport in June of 2025 and came here to check out the new resort and take a look at bridal suites. The resort is charming with nearly 360 water views from inside. The front desk manager Emily really went above and beyond for us even on one of the busiest holiday weekends of the season. We loved the fire pits, the light house and the food was delicious as well. Our final meal for the weekend was a brunch in which we had Grace for our server. Grace was so warm and personable. She made sure we had everything we needed at our table and they even accomodated serving us outside even though they weren't technically serving out there yet. We hope to stay here when we get married. This resort has great value for the price and there is really nothing like this property elsewhere in the Newport area!

Yelp
From the moment we arrived our little getaway turned into a vacation. We have been coming to this location for many years but this is our first time away since Covid. From the charming (and funny) young man at valet till we saw our picture perfect room was a wonderful experience. And then you find an Anna at the front desk. Professional, kind, caring ( enough adjectives). Thank you Anna and the wonderful crew at the Newport Resort. We will rember this !

Yelp
DO NOT GO TO THIS RESORT IF YOU ARE A PERSON OF COLOR. I went this Memorial Day Weekend (May 2024) to celebrate my partner's 35th birthday. We experienced racism while dining at Torpedo restaurant deck. The waitress was very obviously not happy about serving us, and treated us very differently compared to the white patrons right around us, despite us being nothing but patient and kind (even though we were given freezing cold calamari that was $22). We did nothing to deserve hostility, other than not being white. Additionally, our room had food from the former guests still strewn about the ground (tortilla chips, coffee stains, ...). And, despite paying around $750 in total with fees for a room, not only was it dirty with old food, but the sink and shower water were cold. When we called the front desk for help with the water, we tried five times to just constant ringing. We stopped at the front desk before dinner (we hadn't been able to shower...) to kindly ask them to fix the water and it still was not fixed when we returned and we could not take a shower in the extremely expensive room. Don't recommend this resort if you enjoy being treated with dignity or staying in clean hotel rooms.

Yelp
Dear Management, I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with my recent stay at the Newport Harbor Island Hotel. Unfortunately, my experience at your establishment was far from satisfactory, and I feel compelled to share my concerns regarding several aspects of my visit. First and foremost, the overall cleanliness of the hotel was appalling. Upon arrival, I was immediately taken aback by the state of disarray in the lobby. The floors were dirty, and the furniture appeared neglected and unkempt. The lack of attention to cleanliness was prevalent throughout the entire property, leaving a lasting negative impression. Furthermore, I was utterly disappointed with the view from my room. Despite paying a staggering price of over $800 for a single night, the view was far from the promised picturesque sight of the harbor. Instead, my window overlooked a construction site, which was both unsightly and disruptive. The misleading information on the menu was another major letdown. When I ordered a dish that clearly stated it contained avocado, I was shocked to find that there was none when it arrived. When I brought this to the attention of the waitress, she shifted the blame onto us, making us feel as though we were at fault for the discrepancy. However, upon conducting a thorough review of the menu, it was evident that avocado was indeed listed as an ingredient. This inconsistency in the menu and the dismissive attitude of the staff were completely unacceptable. Adding insult to injury, the resort fee charged to guests was unjustifiable. The condition of the pool area was deplorable, with trash bags strewn across the grounds and a lingering foul odor. It was disheartening to witness such a lack of maintenance in an area that should epitomize relaxation and luxury. This, in no way, resembled the standards one would expect from a reputable resort. Considering the exorbitant price I paid for my stay, I had hoped for a memorable and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, my time at the Newport Harbor Island Hotel fell far short of my expectations. The subpar cleanliness, false advertising, and disregard for maintaining basic resort amenities have left a lasting negative impression. I strongly urge you to take immediate action to address these issues and rectify the numerous shortcomings of your establishment. I sincerely hope that you will take my feedback seriously and make the necessary improvements to provide future guests with the experience they deserve. Yours sincerely, Zachary Hunter

Yelp
This review is for Eugene Meoni, the head of the food and beverage department at this resort. After calmly, expressing our concerns while staying at the resort with Eugene and David Smiley (General Manager), we did not receive what we were promised following our conversations. Here are the encounters we experienced while staying at this resort: -Pool Service - On the 4th of July, we had expected the pool area to be full but by 11am, it was at full capacity. We asked the pool service if there were some chairs we could find and he scanned the pool for 5 seconds and said no but said we could go to the adult only section. Rather than showing us where it is and setting up our chairs for us, he threw us towels and pointed where to go. While in the adult only section, there were many kids in it! Running back and forth and making it an unenjoyable and not a relaxing experience. That was our only day at the pool. - Downstairs Bakery - I am going to assume that the Bakery is meant to serve as a grab and go spot if you are in need of something quickly or prefer to take it back to your room. This is NOT a grab and go spot. Everyday the line was out into the lobby and service was extremely slow. As we got closer to the line, we were listening to what others were ordering to get some idea of what was offered. While people were ordering, they were told that the item was "sold out" or when people asked what was on the breakfast sandwich or the omelette, the employees looked puzzled and were uneducated about their own menu! - Torpedo Lounge Breakfast - We went downstairs for breakfast at 9am and were told that no one could be seated and we had to wait 20 minutes. There were many tables open but we wrongfully trusted the hostesses judgement. 40 minutes go by and we go to check on the table, the hostess sees us and gives us a face as if she finally remembered us. Upon being seated, we were told that the toaster machine was broken and the breakfast sandwich was not available. After making other selections, we see other families ordering the breakfast sandwich and pieces of toast. Not sure where the miscommunication happened between back of house and servers. After receiving our food, we were not checked on and were not asked for drink refills. We paid our bill and decided not to come back for breakfast the rest of our stay and go elsewhere. - 1639 Dinner - Our last night staying, we wanted to try the upscale dining on property. When we walked into the restaurant we asked for a table for two. The host/manager looked extremely hesitant and responded with "ummm". He then asked us if we checked in with the Torpedo Lounge before coming to 1639. We responded with no and then he said "yeah....we have room here". All with extreme hesitation. I will add that there were only two tables seated in the entire restaurant besides us. Not sure why we wouldn't be able to be seated. Our experience at 1639 was fine afterward. However, there was another menu item that was not available (the spinach and artichoke fondue). We informed Eugene of our concerns following our stay on July 4th and after going back and forth with Eugene for over a month, he said he would process some refunds for us on August 9th which he still has not. We gave Eugene the opportunity to make things right and not loose potential customers. But after completely ghosting us and not fulfilling his promise, I am left to leave this review. I am disgusted by the lack of customer service and expected much higher from a place that used to be Gurney's. I hope no one ever has to experience what we have and choose not to stay at a classless resort. Eugene, if you are reading this, do the right thing.

Yelp
Way over priced. Far from luxury. Our First room - claustrophobic. Water view overlooked roof w bird poop; peeling paint in room; door stuck - had to be forced shut; water leaked out from under shower door We were told room could be moved for second day. I checked in morning and person at desk said they would call us when new room was ready. Never happened. I checked 3x to see if new room was ready. On third try, guy at desk gave me new set of keys - but to the same to room - said no record of new room. Manager was called and she straightened it out. This was at abt 4 pm New room more spacious but - luggage rack broken, phone didn't work (someone who worked there later told us there was an issue in several rooms that had to be corrected). Also there was BLACK MOLD on bathroom ceiling. - see photos On our second full day, we returned after a day out to find our room hadn't been cleaned at 3:30. Had to walk to desk to ask abt it bc phone in room didn't work. Was told cleaning is only every other day which seems crazy at a resort that charges high prices and resort fees. Someone was sent to clean but we had to vacate room late in day when we wanted to relax. Resort as a whole is definitely in need of maintenance and upgrades. Staff seemed to understand there were issues here - most very nice although lack of training was evident One person acted as valet, bellhop and shuttle driver - which meant there was no shuttle every half hour as promised. This nice young man Alin should be given a raise for doing 3 jobs. Breakfast - some days was a buffet, some days not - no rhyme or reason for the change and staff couldn't give one. Very poorly run and over priced.

Yelp
I was a little concerned upon seeing the reviews so we called the hotel to ask some questions. Spoke with Erin (absolutely amazing) and immediately booked. So glad we did as we had a wonderful stay! Property is really nice and on the water. They have both a regular shuttle and water taxi for transportation to/from the main area in town. Drivers were really friendly and happy to share information about Newport. The staff at the hotel really go above and beyond. Thanks so much Erin and Andrew. There was another but we can't recall his name... maybe Josh?... used to work in reservations and recommended a good pizza place. Overall would definitely recommend and stay again!

Yelp
I try my best to give unbiased reviews and give the best reviews when deserved. However, I feel compelled to write this one. We are truly disappointed in our experience. We are giving any stars because our bar waiter was wonderful despite a very busy night. We did have to wait, but he was still attentive. And the food at the bar was good (we liked the wings). However, we are disappointed in the switch in management. We admit that we didn't know the place switched management/names until coming here. However, we work in hospitality and know the gurneys name. So we booked under gurneys at Hotwire. We came here expecting gurneys and it did not deliver. This Father's Day weekend meant a lot to us because it's the first one with our mom. My sister visited the place last summer and loved it, which is why we booked here. We booked for 3 people and we got a room with one king bed. Not a huge deal. This happens. A heads up would have been nice. We were just confused with the room set up then. It seemed like our room was an afterthought. Why would you have a couch in a room that's not also a pull out bed? We still paid a lot of money for sub par. Felt like cutting corners. We had to move the couch in order to make room for the roll away bed. The front staff was so rude despite our constant understanding and apologies if we made any mistakes in the booking (which we did not do. The room was made for 3 people and need for double beds but we were trying to be understanding because things happen). While we understand that the reservation was under Hotwire, the hotel did not understand our concerns. Also, the hotel misrepresented themselves as gurneys under Hotwire! You could at least remove the pet fee for us. No, nothing. We were made to feel it was our fault. Every time we asked for assistance, it took forever to get anything unfortunately. However we understand that it is a very busy weekend, and again some staff were helpful and polite. We are disappointed but making the best of the experience because of the few staff (not front staff) that made it worth while.

Yelp
We have been trying to call this hotel for days now because we need to make a change on our reservation and NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE!! How does a hotel run if not even American Express who we booked the trip with can't even get ahold of the hotel. So disappointed!

Yelp
The views are beautiful around the hotel. The pool staff very nice. We stayed for my son's wedding and are very disappointed in the hotel. The front desk employees are rude. From checking in with my confirmation number they could not find our room. Not how I expected to be treated at hotel this expensive. The room safe did not work which was a problem for us as we were responsible for wedding cards and family jewerly. The response from the front desk on my first call was we are too busy right now to deal with it. When I walked down to the front desk I was told many safes in the rooms are broken. No solution except the front desk could keep my valuables. The hallways and elevator Are Not Air Conditioned! Why? With all the renovations they did? Many guests complained to us how terrible the hotel was. Very upsetting for such a beautiful area. The shower handle would stick. We went for breakfast sat down and waited 20 min for a server to bring us a menus. We were the only ones in the restaurant. We waited another 10 minutes for someone to take our order at that point we left. We could not even stay the last night as we did not want to leave our room with valuables unlocked. So we paid for entire night and left. Oh and parking ranges from 35-45 per night. I then received 5 emails for a survey. Answered all honestly and no-one replied until the last survey when I asked why do keep sending me surveys and do nothing about the issues? Or even apologize? Then I received a response saying they are still training employees. Okay, but what about the safe, the shower handle, the No AC? Those are not staffing issues. Weddings on Goat Island are beautiful. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. The guests that stayed just a mile away loved the hotels they were in. Stay away from this hotel!

Yelp
I am a little jaded - we stayed here several times when it was Gurney's and absolutely loved it. The new management is missing a little something. The hotel looks very nice and they did a great job in the remodel. The restaurant staff is very nice, but the front desk staff doesn't give you the WoW so happy to have you here feeling. Ansel was very nice in helping us get another room reservation when I screwed it up on Amex - (we were here earlier last week - then went to Bar Harbor ME and came back for a night) . We have had their breakfast and it was wonderful (although pricy - to be expected) - we are sorry that they don't seem to have a full dinner service here like Gurney's did - the food was incredible when it was Gurney's kinda miss it - I had an appetizer of some bizarre goat cheese that I thought would be like a little baked goat cheese (or like they do with liked baked brie) and then have roasted tomatoes instead it came in a full on tomato sauce - hmmm was strange - with little toasted bread. I ate it a little - anyway - it just felt like a weird appetizer - word to the chef - go with a baked brie and bread - better app choice. (I am the daugther of a French Chef that taught at the Culinary Institute of America - I do know food very well). The rooms are very clean - nice - we had ocean view - lovely. I guess they need to get their front staff more peppy - figure out some better food to put on the menu for outside (or full on dinners would be nice) - more activities for guests on the lawn kinda thing. If you have a social activity person they should be present and really encouraging people to use the facilities to the max. Also keep Spa in line with local hotel competition - you're not off completely but the added 5 or 10 bucks is more than say Marriott and for me that extra would go to the providers tip. I own two customer driven businesses (a bridal salon with moms gowns and tuxes and custom stationery as well as a marketing and branding company) - customer service is KEY and they need just to up their game a bit on the front desk service people and the overall hotel experience. It has all the makings of an awesome resort again. Get it together management. Other than that the place is as always beautiful and relaxing.

Yelp
Reservations department was incredibly rude and unhelpful. I called multiple times over the course of a week about a new discount offer on their website - the discount was not showing when I went to finally book, so I was going to be charged more than I should have. Different reservations rep said they understood and saw the issue & there was something wrong with the website, so they would need a manager to help & he was out. They said the manager would call me back but he never did. I called multiple times to follow up & was met by incredibly rude reps who shouldn't be in any sort of customer facing role. At the end of the day, I was fed up and ending up booking another property for my stay. Taking a look through these reviews, I'm glad I did as the reservations department only seems to be the tip of the iceberg in terms of issues with this hotel.

Yelp
06/13/2024 Beautiful evening suggeted a drink and app on Goat Island .We decided to return to Newport Harbor Hotel .Well the reviews were correct a limited menu and terrible choices. We had calamari and glass of wine.It wasn't busy so we took a chance .The calamari was like warm we waited a very long time for a drink and we sat next to the bar for swift service.Waitress used standard line and it was useless to communicate.Since I'm from Newport the setting is lovely but thats it I cannot recommend this section food & drink and it is unlikely we will return as locals.

Yelp
Lipstick on a pig. Unfortunately rebranding the name and adding a little fresh paint here and there cannot save this place. The staff was not very helpful and seemed aloof at times. The saltwater pool (the main feature) was GREEN! The pool wall was missing tiles and the water looks like the filter was broken. During our 3 day stay, each day it took 1-3 hrs to have pool/food staff take a food or drink order and this was during the week not a crowded weekend. The room was fairly clean yet the bathroom door would always slide open with no latch to keep it closed. A little privacy maybe? Do yourself a favor if you still visit after all these bad reviews, stay away from the coffee shop. Worse than airport coffee. It's a real shame as the location is ideal to visit a beautiful city with some of the best food I have ever eaten. Do better Newport Harbor Island "Resort".

Sam C.

Yelp
Most of the negative reviews on the resort are due to a last minute delay due to the city of Newport, the staff was more than accommodating for a reschedule of our stay and helped us quite a bit. Emily was super helpful as my fiancé and I took our trip to conduct wedding research and we were happily surprised at how accommodating and helpful the staff were, particularly Emily, in helping us with that. Our server Grace was also extremely helpful and very warm and made our stay even more amazing. Overall a very great stay and we will be back! I can understand a lot of peoples frustration with last minute cancelled reservations, but I can also respect the difficulty of opening a resort like this and having unexpected delays. The staff and facility more than made up for any negatives that were caused by the initial cancelation.

Yelp
Big smiles from front desk team Anastasija and Aleksandra. The room has great water views, but quite dated. Bathroom no make up mirror, and low toilets. The hotel is quite dated, but we were told this winter big changes coming. The pool deck has a cooking pool bar, and Milos the bartender was fast and also big smiles. Amazing water views from the huge pool, but the pool is also showing its age. We will return next spring when the renovation is completed. Thanks again

Yelp
DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Multiple charges to my credit card and terrible service. If I could give 0/5 stars I would. Our 2 days at this hotel was terrible. They were unable to locate our reservation on arrival which was booked through Hotwire resulting in an over 1.5 hour check in process. Their "off property" booking staff through the hotel was immediately able to find the reservation and confirm our booking, however it apparmently was not showing up on the reception desk end. The receptionist Luc/Rose tried really hard to fix the problem and was kind but her manager Freddie was rude and useless. He saw she was struggling to find the reservation and never once stepped in to apologize to us for the delay on their end or help her. He showed no empathy for our situation and was extremely unprofessional. He needs to take a course in hospitality. We have stayed in many top tier hotels all over the world and this hotel was not worth the stress or the money. I regret staying here. Additionally we were getting married in Newport which was the reason for the stay. After 1.5 hours of trying to check in they still could not confirm our reservation on-site so they said they would use my credit card to make a reservation while they worked on the issue further. Due to the very long check in process I was late for my own rehearsal dinner. When we went to check out they said I owed over $1500. Nothing had been resolved. Additionally there were $200 in charges to our room that were incorrect. Per the receptionist "oh incorrect charges happen here all the time". Once again very unprofessional. They assured me they would refund the $1500 fee. Today, 2 weeks later, I looked at my AMEX and I received another new charge by the hotel for over $1000. So now I again need to take time out of my busy day to once again fix this issue. Additionally we had multiple family and friends stay here as well who also had multiple issues come up during the stay. Overall we have stayed at many hotels in Newport and had great experiences. DO NOT STAY HERE. Take your business elseware. Also I have noticed the hotel "manager" responding to the reviews seem very copy/paste and generic which echos the lack of professionalism and empathy despite multiple guests with similar complaints as myself.

Yelp
Ate at the restaurant here - We booked it via OpenTable and planned to do the fire pit experience. We booked mainly for the location and fun outside area. However, it rained that day and while it had cleared up by dinner time, when we arrived they informed us that the outside area was wet and so they could sit us inside only. We were unhappy about this as no one called to tell us and we paid $50 per person to book the fire pit. Not to mention the staff working the front of the restaurant were incredibly rude. Arms crossed, glaring at us... horrible way to be welcomed into a restaurant. Our waitress was just as bad and the best part of all was we had no control over the tip because we were a party of 7. Food was ok but not worth the rude stares from the staff. Also, the tuna poke is tuna tartare, please revise the menu... All in all, my recommendation is to eat literally anywhere else, I've felt more welcomed at my local Chipotle, hospitality industry huh.

Yelp
Excellent, large room. Minor issue, had to remind them about more towels. Fun for the kid in the pool and the skating rink. Gave us a late check out at 12:30. Breakfast was good. Could use a omelet station but the resort is going through changes and restaurant will be totally revamped next winter.

Yelp
I wrote back in May 2023 at how disappointed we were at the outdoor bar service, waited too long for a drink, no eye contact from staff, etc. We had been to Gurney's several times in 2022 and always had a pleasant experience. We decided to try the outdoor bar again on Aug 20 and we were delighted to see a big improvement in the bar staff and the time it took to get drinks. We also noticed that the manager was walking around speaking with patrons. We believe in second chances and happy to share positive experiences as well as lousy experiences. Happy to say that the customer service is back. Congrats, we will be back again!

Yelp
Location is beautiful but wasted on this run down property. The management could care less about guest satisfaction. The rooms are old the caulking on the tub is black. Prices are very high for what is provided. Absolutely no way I would repeat without a complete renovation and change of philosophy on how to take care of guests. Food is mediocre at best. Newport is such a great place but this resort is lacking in every way but location.

Yelp
This resort is beautiful in the summer. Favorite place in the summer. Great Gatsby vibes. However, customer service has plummeted since the name change from Gurney's. Outdoor bar by the pool 30 minute wait "at least" to get a drink. Breakfast restaurant it took 30 minutes to get someone to even bring water. They are either massively understaffed and or no longer care since the name change. If you hire that other bartender or waiter you can take in more revenue and keep guests happy and coming back.

Yelp
I came in with my family for Mother's Day brunch and I was very disappointed in the service. Our server Nancy did not attend to our table at all. We sat waiting for drinks while she was missing for long periods of time. She took even longer to greet our table when we arrived. I had to find another server to help us through out our dining experience. I was not satisfied with the service even though we have dined here many times before with amazing service. If this was our first time here it would have been our last. Her attitude was less then appeasing and I don't think she is cut out for fine dining experiences.

Yelp
Just moved to the area and keep coming back to the resort because of the amazing service we get from Scott. He is so welcoming and great at what he does. I will keep coming back because of him and the service and great conversation he gives.

Yelp
The hotel was under major construction, making it very challenging to relax or enjoy ourselves. We tried to get coffee in the restaurant at 7:30am and was told no by the server because she was too busy and that we would have to wait until the coffee shop opened at 8am. The food was decent and the front desk staff were very polite. We stayed at the hotel many times when it was Gurney's and had a great experience the difference is profound.

Yelp
Unfortunately our experience at Newport Harbor Island left a lot to be desired. We spent large amount of money for two nights in a King room and it was not a great experience. First of all, our room wasnt stocked with the basics - soap, enough shampoo/ conditioners enough towels, room service menu, etc. We kept having to call down to get these basic items which we should've been stocked in the room prior to our arrival. Secondly, we had a HORRIFYING experience with the shower which was clogged upon our arrival. A maintenance person came to snake it and it sounded so gross when he was fixing it and they left hair from the drain in the shower afterwards. It was so incredibly disgusting! I cringe when I think about it. They really should've offered us a different room at this point. The front desk staff was very nice. However, we were promised prosecco for our room because it was our minimoon and it never came! So disappointing, they should've never mentioned they were going to send it if they weren't going to follow through. The in room dining menu is limited, but the breakfast was tasty and delivered quickly. Hence the two stars. Regardless, we do not recommend and will not stay here again.

Yelp
Awful experience-run down and dirty- whole hotel needs an overhaul. Photos on website are deceiving.

Alison L.

Yelp
Let me begin by saying, Freddie at the front desk was amazing and is the only reason I am giving this establishment two stars. The photographs of this "resort" do not accurately represent the condition of the property. We were located on the second floor and the elevator to our room was out of service the entire time of our stay. Our room was hot, lacked all of the bath linens, smelled moldy & musty and to be perfectly honest felt disgusting. The icing on the cake would be when I found the nail clippings of a previous guest beside the bed!! Stay at your own risk!

Taylor M.

Yelp
5 stars for location as its walking distance and a quick shuttle away from everything you need but would give 1-2 stars for the "resort" itself. This is a HIGHLY overpriced Hilton. Paying 2000$+ for an extremely small watervkew king.. the rooms are raging hot, windows don't open so you can't get air flow, housekeeping didn't come for 2/3 days we stayed so we were forced to use our own beach towels after we called 3x for towels. The carpet was stained and shower had hair in it from other guests. The outside area and pool were nice but just know there will be 1 million screaming children around. Food at the hotel was ok but extremely overpriced for the quality. Probably wouldn't stay again.

Julie A.

Yelp
We checked in and checked out 30 minutes later. Total dump. Dirty, old and smells of must and mold. We booked an ocean view room with a balcony. When we arrived, there was a wedding going on and our room location forced us to walk through the wedding cocktail hour. If I were that bride I would be furious. Got moved to a different room, no balcony or windows that open. Front desk could not have cared less. We are now disputing with our credit card company bc hotel would not reimburse: $2k for a three hour drive to Newport and a 3 hour drive home. Completely ruined our holiday weekend away.

Tara D.

Yelp
ZERO..... buyer beware ... the WORST hotel ... they are closing in November and it shows... if staffing is an issue they should not try to pack the hotel... I stayed for 3 nights ... mold in the bathroom ... housekeeping I give a zero ... no wash cloths ... sheets after 2nights not changed ... the luggage cart was wet on the bottom .. hence wet stained clothes..I spoke to management ... they adjusted the bill ... not good enough... it was a terrible unpolished hotel with many issues... I would NOT recommend this hotel ... I can't imagine how bad it would be for a wedding venue... the training of the staff is awful... communication with the front desk was terrible ... they should be ashamed ...

Jessica B.

Yelp
Bad experience!! WiFi in our room barely worked and we were stuck trying to work on the patio or at the restaurant. That alone was a deal breaker I've never been to a hotel where I couldn't use WiFi in my room. There was no soap in the room, and after about 20 rings the front desk never answered so I used shampoo to wash my hands for the two nights we stayed. Old soggy coasters with our glasses upside down so didn't drink out of those. Wanted to take the bikes in the morning but apparently can't until bellman gets there at 7am (it was 7:05 when I asked). We moved to a different hotel for our last night because we had to find a quiet place to work with decent accommodations. NOT WORTH IT!!!!!

Nancy B.

Yelp
I regret not having taken more pictures to show how shabby, run-down, and filthy the accommodations at the Newport Harbor Island Resort were during our recent stay there on October 7, 8 and 9. When we booked our rooms in March it was Gurney's Inn at Newport - we found out about a week ago that it had changed hands in June. I chose Gurney's because we were attending a wedding of a close friend in Bristol, RI. Although we could have stayed at a hotel closer to the venue, my friends and I (who were also coming from out of town to attend the wedding) thought Gurney's would be a lovely place for all of us to spend time together. We decided to splurge and spend a small fortune in anticipation of enjoying the luxurious venue and services the Gurney's website depicted. What a mistake. When we arrived at the Newport Harbor Island Resort we were surprised at how shoddy it looked. The arrival circle was filled with cars parked at odd angles - you could not drive through. The parking attendant was very nice and apologetic but told us to back up, pull over to the side and walk to the entrance from where we were. There was no one outside or inside to help with bags. When we arrived at the front desk there was an irate customer complaining about her room. She left the desk still angry, as we learned, while walking with her on our way to our rooms which were quite a distance away from the entrance. Down a ramp, through several hallways, past dishes left outside doors (still there when we came back from an event that evening) we passed several large event rooms. I realized then that the Newport Harbor Island Resort is actually a decaying conference center, not the luxurious resort it purports to be. Our rooms were shockingly dissimilar to those in the website photos. Dated, dingy and dark! While the balcony of one room did provide a lovely view, it was strewn with debris from the peeling roof overhead as well as pieces of stucco from the crumbling building façade. The balcony of the other room was so shallow that you would have to sit sideways to fit. The sliding farmhouse bathroom doors required the strength of Hercules to open and close. The bathtubs, deep to begin with, were raised about eight inches off the floor which made getting in and out to take a shower a real challenge. The ceiling of one shower was moldy, and the vent was clogged with debris and what looked like mold. On top of that, one of our bath towels was literally threadbare. See attached pictures. For all this "luxury" I was charged a total of $2820.31 for one room and $2424.45 for the other. Don't waste your money on this dump!

Ali B.

Yelp
Do not come here. First the outdoor hostess sat us inside at the restaurant where we sat for 10 minutes without service. When we finally flagged someone down they rudely advised the indoor restaurant was closed despite their own staff being the one to seat us. They moved us to the lounge. We ordered a turkey club that was so slimy and tasted like a lunchable and undercooked shrimp cocktail. Horrible service. Horrible food.
