Former Rocky Cola Cafe Space Becomes Gus & Andy’s Kitchen in Montrose - Eater LA

"Gus & Andy’s Kitchen & Bar is a newly opened restaurant located on the corner of Honolulu and Montrose Avenues in Montrose, Glendale. It aims to create the feeling of a Greek backyard where everything is grilled. The restaurant has a mostly American diner menu with Greek influences, notably from the Peloponnesus region. It features a Santa Maria-style wood grill and offers dishes like Tri-Tip sandwich, grilled pork belly sandwich, and loukoumades. The interior has a retro diner feel, and there's a Midwest tavern-style bar. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays." - Ani Duzdabanyan

Great service! Jasmine in particular was amazing, and went above and beyond. But really the whole team was great, warm, friendly, and attentive. We felt like part of the Gus and Andy family. Menu is great, and fully available all day! There are also some brunch specials that are available until sold out. Special adult beverage menu. Kids menu as well. We got the chicken sandwich, banana French toast, and 3 eggs/hash/toast. All great portions. We took a bit home for a snack. Flavor was nice. Fries were good. They have a mayo based house hot sauce, and a green verde. And classic hot sauces available too which pair nicely with the sandwiches. Plenty of parking in public free lots on Montrose. Be aware this spot is open Friday-Sunday 8am-3pm only. Food was good, but the service was exceptional. Thank you Jasmine and Team!! Nice outdoor seating near the Honolulu and verdugo/Montrose intersection. Dog and kid friendly.

Stopped to get some food after a hike. As soon as I saw my food hit the table I knew I was going to order more. We got the Chicken Supreme Sandwich, Waffle, and a Avocado Bacon Cheeseburger. Fries had that nice crunch to them for anyone that liked texture

The staff at Gus & Andy’s Kitchen & Bar were incredibly kind, and the customer service was top-notch. However, the food quality left a lot to be desired, especially for the price. I understand that this area is expensive, but $25 for a chicken sandwich that wasn’t even the worst I’ve ever had—just painfully mediocre? I genuinely would’ve preferred a cafeteria chicken sandwich over this one. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, and it was barely seasoned—just the lightest pinch of salt and pepper. The texture made it seem like the chicken was boiled and then quickly grilled for appearances. The bread was giving great value, and the lettuce was borderline inedible. The only saving grace was the fries—they were amazing and honestly carried the meal. I went with two friends, and our total (including tax and tip) was around $90 for three people. My friends got breakfast burritos, which were better than my sandwich but still not great. The biggest issue here is the lack of quality in the food—it just doesn’t taste good for what they’re charging. I was really excited based on the marketing about this being a restaurant passed down through generations, but if these recipes were in my family, I would’ve retired them by now.

Great food, great new choices on the menu and a full bar too, if you need a cold drink after a hard day at work. The burgers come with fries. Had a veggie burger with cheddar on sourdough, delicious. Loved the shredded lettuce and the pickle wedge. Clean and welcoming atmosphere. Looking forward to my next meal there!

Michael was awesome!!!Great food especially the tri tip and the GRILL sauce ! It is delicious!!! Gus and Andy's are twins and adorable. The staff are nice and try to help you. I wish they had more table service as its only offered in the bar. There is limited seating up there, so i often just order my food at the counter.. The amount of meat you get is more than other restaurants nearby for the same price, so I prefer to eat my tri tip from Gus and Andys. Mom got chicken and Waffles. She said the chicken was a bit smashed and not like a plump breast. She did love her waffle and the sweet maple butter was a nice touch.

Google
Nice people, good food, will definitely go back. The French fries are to die for lol will definitely have to bring our daughter sometime, very family friendly food. There's so much on the menu that I want to try and I usually can't say that. We had the grilled cheese, an omelet, a chocolate shake and a chocolate malt shake. Everything was very good. Might try a waffle or burrito next time.

Cozy restaurant/bar with decent food quality and options. Order at the counter, get a number and sit down. Food will be brought to your table. Full server service is only during bar hours. During busy hours, it might be hard to find street parking in front of the store, but there is a good size public parking lot in the rear.

Google
Tom recommended us - we stopped in for lunch this past Weds. It didn’t disappoint. We arrived around noon and there were plenty of parking meters available. The restaurant is plenty big and nicely decorated with modern construction. Everything was spotless. We enter and are greeted immediately and I can feel the young man’s smile, even through his face mask. Never having been here before, we ask for recommendations and are given plenty of options. Being a bit health conscious that day, I order the kale salad with chicken while my coworker orders the pastrami and fries. Soda fountain is behind the counter but they come check on you and offer refills if needed, nice touch. Salad - wow this was good. The kale wasn’t hard or tough, could be they massaged it before serving which softens the texture of the greens. Loaded with tons and I mean TONS of chicken and feta. Also had pepitas which were a nice addition. I opted for the vinaigrette which was good, but I may just ask for vinegar next time to lower the fat content (no oil). Served in a pie tin, this salad at $14+$5 protein was extremely filling. Pastrami - this was a very generous serving with fries on the side, a few hot peppers and a side of ketchup. Definitely a “cheat meal” item, my lunch mate thoroughly enjoyed it and I believe him -his plate was clean! Lots of happy hour specials, would definitely dine here again to try additional items. The burgers sounded delicious, the kitchen was immaculate and the service spot on. 5/5, well done!

Yelp
Ordered the pastrami burger AMAZING- get it with the FRESH MADE ZUCCHINI FRIES....... The Zucchini Fries ware simply out of this planet ;)

Yelp
Gooood brunch/breakfast. My friends like their gluten free options for sammys. Not the biggest fan of the layout. but they cant really control that. Always been greeted with a smile. Love the service.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast after a suggestion from my daughter's friend. This place definitely has gotten a facelift! Very clean and spacious looking. We got here early so we could pick anywhere to sit. We chose a booth towards the back of the room which was comfy. The menu is fairly large, so I had a hard time choosing what to eat, so I finally decided on an omelet which was VERY good and filing. Next time I might try the chilaquiles. My daughter and her friend chose the breakfast burrito which also looked very good and filling. Their hot sauce btw is a must. Service was very good. I would definitely hope so since they weren't busy this early in the morning. Plenty of free parking very early in the morning.

Yelp
What a shame. This place really just ruins the corner of Honolulu. Ever since it opened it's just ruined the street. Food is not good. Food is overpriced. Rude staff. Slow service. Overall strange environment there. I will not be returning.

Yelp
Very disappointed today! Ordered an egg white burrito with tri-tip and sent it back the first time because it was a mess. Second time the burrito came out with overcooked eggs not white and full of hasbrowns barely any meat and they forgot the cheese. Overall service is still good.
google avatar

Angie S.

Yelp
Second time coming for brunch. My daughter and uncle love their pancakes! I have tried their omelette which comes with hash browns and toast. It was delicious and a large order. After taking it home, I ate twice out of that. Last Sunday, I tried their avocado toast with a scrambled egg!! A nice touch with crispy bacon between the egg and avocado

Yelp
Great service! Great food! Fish and chips were fantastic. Location is good and the interior was very comfortable.

Yelp
I love Gus and Andy's. They have a great variety, sometimes it's hard to decide! Breakfast served all day is a definite plus! The only draw back are their hours. Because of my schedule, I rarely have the opportunity to eat there now. Only open Fri-Sun 8-3. Hopefully they can extend their hours again soon.

Yelp
Had lunch here with a friend. It's very nice inside and looks to be sports bar-y with at least 5 tvs that I could see on the bar side. I was surprised that it wasn't crowded at lunch time. Maybe that's because parking is rare. You order at the counter and they bring it to your table. Maybe if the salads were $19! I know that everything has gone up in price. But I thought this was too much. I ordered the Wedge salad without tomatoes. Of course it arrived WITH tomatoes and I had to send it back. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich that she had before and loved! She let me try some of the chicken and it WAS delish!

Yelp
When they first opened the place was pretty darn good. Something happened within the past few years where the food now tastes like something tossed in the microwave. As a restaurant let's focus on great food..

Yelp
Gus & Andy's Kitchen is a new causal family corner diner restaurant in Montrose. It has an All-American charm menu. Interior design is non-pretentious with very relaxing atmosphere; very spacious area with rear bar.!Front outdoor seats has good street and hill view. We came here to grab brunch and was greeted by a young respectful male staff. I ordered the Route 99 Omelette and Martinelli's Apple juice. Food was good-modest in taste and flavor. Juice was great. Male Staff were obsequious and professional. Service was modest. Prices were competitive and within market value. Cleanliness and orderliness were spot on. Plenty of public parking lot. Overall, I had a pleasant experience and food. Most definitely will comeback in the very near future.

Yelp
Excellent service and they care about customers. I ordered something and it came a bit (but not too) late and they gave me extra chicken fingers and a complimentary dessert. The food hits the spot and everyone is so kind! Highly recommend!

Yelp
My food was fine (nothing special) but my partner's was weird. Ahi tacos consisted of strange flatbread filled with slaw (lots of pickled onions) and chunks of ahi. Very strange flavor combo. Perhaps if they weren't called tacos as they had no connection to that beloved food it would be less jarring. I had the verde chilaquiles which were doused in feta. Feta on chilaquiles? Is this a Mediterranean Mexican fusion restaurant? I'll never know. The restaurant itself is clean but nothing special and the workers were friendly. My food came out fairly quickly but the other meal did not. It was a pretty meh and gave us no reason to return.

Yelp
**Rating my experience with a toddler** I'd rate the service a 5 rating, and the food a 2 rating. So I'll meet in the middle and give it a 3 overall. Pros: - centrally located, parking was not hard as there's lots of options around - service was great and fast. They were very accommodating with my 4 year old son, and they served us a fruit bowl because he asked for one. - fairly empty (on a weekday lunch time) so we could make a bit more noise than usual - people were kind and friendly Cons: - the food was below average. I tried the breakfast burrito and it was probably the worse one I've ever had. Lacking lots of flavor and even the salsa was not good. My son's Hot Dog was "meh" and the fries were undercooked. - the Creme Brûlée was more like a pudding/custard. There's absolutely no resemblance of a Creme Brûlée as what they serve here Sadly I don't think I'll be back because the food really was not good, but I'm grateful that they were so kind and accommodating with my son. No regrets coming as we still had a fun time, but the food was a let down.

Yelp
I met my friends here for breakfast and the food was delicious, especially the pancakes! But what struck me most was the absolute friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. They were refreshing in their customer service focus! I highly recommend Gus and Andy's!!!!

Yelp
Man.... I'm sad to say this place was a bit mediocre... or like a tad under mediocre......... My friend and I came here for brunch since other restaurants in Montrose were packed. The seating was plentiful. They serve breakfast all day. Ended up getting a cheeseburger w fries for around $13 w tip. It was just okay. Patty tasted frozen. The French fries were also under fried and limp. Overall not the best execution. The service was lovely. Everyone was very nice. Free parking in the back in the public parking area. Clean restrooms.

Yelp
In my opinion, it's not easy finding a burger that is better than In-and-Out and less costly. But try we must. :-) Up front, It has the ambiance of a local diner. Clean, and tidy, good vibes and easy to order. Good amount of seating, inside and out. We had no problem finding seats. Only a few people inside or outside eating this early evening. I liked the location, because it reminded me of Rocky Cola back in the day. We noticed that there is a full bar. That might be another way to experience Gus and Andy's. Just a thought. Hubby ordered Cheeseburger and fries. He was happy with his burger and the price was really reasonable. It looked like a homemade burger, which is always nice. I noticed that a few reviewers complained about the food, but no complaints here. Hubby ate every last bit of his meal and was very satisfied. Side note: The server was very accommodating, one of the owners Karen greeted us as we walked in, and afterwards asked how we enjoyed our meal. That's a plus in my book. Customer Service can be lacking at some establishments and that can make your dinning experience bad, even when the food is great. So I give this place a 9 out of 10 for customer service. My husband gave the food 7 out of 10. Burger was very tasty, fries were hot and crunchy. I didn't order anything this time around, so I'm basing the review on his palate. I always try to support small businesses, so give this place a chance. It's nice to have variety in our community. Overtime, I can see this place making their trademark in the Montrose area. Thank you for a good overall experience. Next time we come, will try the breakfast.

Yelp
Came in here for breakfast not expecting much, just expected a basic menu with basic flavors. This place was actually delicious! Menu was huge!!! So many options omg! And the food was really flavorful!

Yelp
We went to Gus & Andy's today and the food was great, reasonably priced and great service. I recommend this place to everyone.

Yelp
Wonderful place. The food was great, the service was even better. Jasmine was very nice and attentive.

Yelp
Nice spacious corner spot in Montrose. Easy city parking behind the restaurant and other businesses. The service was really nice and quick. I didn't realize my order had cheese on it which I can't eat and they changed it out with no hesitation even though it was my mistake. My chicken sandwich was very juicy and tasty. The French toast looks amazing. Lots of searing and a bar are where you can watch the sports ;)

Yelp
2 Stars for the 2 visits I've had with Gus & Andy's. First, let me start off by saying their service is good and so far everyone I interacted with was friendly & cool. The prices are not so bad either. The issue was the food, I don't how to put it, the chicken tenders taste like the frozen ones you'd buy at a grocery store and then re heated in your oven or air fryer. The flavor was non existent and was pretty hard to chew. The ahi tuna salad is just okay, nothing to go crazy over, the food is mid.
google avatar

Yelp
We tried this somewhat new place in Montrose. The place was nice and clean. Service was pretty good. Only downfall was the tri-tip sandwich that I ordered. It was extremely dry and tasteless. They thin cut the meat which will dry it out and it appears that they put it on a grill to reheat it...which dried it out even more. Thank god for the BBQ sauce...at least that made it edible. The fries were pretty good though. I may give this place another chance, but they need to work out their prep methods to make sure thigs are not Sahara dry.
google avatar

Barb N.

Yelp
They have great delicious food and many choices. Seems there is something for everyone. I like the staff and they are willing to actually listen to your needs and make you happy. I loved my meal, a tri tip bowl with grill sauce and glazed grilled vegetables. I asked for extra grill sauce and was pleased to get it so I can have enough for when I have the leftovers tomorrow. So many choices that one is surely able to pick from a plethora of proteins and ways to prepare them. Burgers, hot dogs, burritos, tacos, bowls and lots of sides too. They cook everything to order no pre-made fast food. So we got our meals to go and came home and watched TV while eating. I have been here a lot this year and strongly recommend it. They also have good desserts like lemon bars and apple pie and more.
google avatar

Cynthia P.

Yelp
Solid breakfast place. I enjoyed the French toast and sausage. The food comes out on weird metallic plates and they give you plastic utensils I think to protect their plates from getting scratched up. The plastic utensils make the experience less like a dine out one though. Next door was too busy to seat us so we came here and we were not disappointed food wise. Hard to go wrong with classic breakfast foods!
google avatar

Judy A.

Yelp
Well we are first timers here at Gus and Andys. We will definitely be coming back.. the food was excellent!! Service superb!! And the ambiance awesome... on a scale of 1 to 10 we give them a 12!!!!

Yelp
I tried Gus and Andy's because I was hungry, in the neighborhood, and had never been there before. It's not that the restaurant is that bad I was just bothered by the service from the bartender! Seemed arrogant self-centered and does not care about your happiness regarding the food you get! I do not eat dairy told him so, told him what kind of bread I wanted, etc. Had to reorder it because he didn't get it right, and it came with a bunch of slaw on it which pretty much would assume it had dairy in it I ordered the ahi tuna sandwich because I don't eat red meat either. Basically kept drinking instead for $40 I got a sandwich I didn't even eat. The girls in the front part of the restaurant seemed very attentive. I will not be back I had to have a margarita and a beer just to get through this meal.

Yelp
Gus & Andy's was one of the most anticipated restaurants to open in Montrose. I tried Gus & Andy's a couple of weeks ago, and had a very good experience. You place your order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. I tried their Fish & Chips. They were very good, but a little oily. A lot of french fries though :) The service was great. The cashier (forgot his name) was very helpful and cheerful, and bartender Hale was very nice as well and quick with the order. I'll be back soon as I really want to try their breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
The wait is over. Finally Gus and Andy's on Honolulu Ave in Montrose is open. Beautiful decor and ambiance and is kept clean all around. The service by all including the owners was excellent, and especially from Hale the bartender. Very attentive, professional, and made us feel at home. The food is very good. The Yeeros with pork and feta fries was delicious. The fish and chips were a little on the oily side, but very tasty, the oily part is something that can be easily corrected. This is what the village in Montrose was missing and now is here. Very good food, exceptional service, nice decor and the place as I mentioned above is extremely clean. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I highly recommend Gus and Andy's Will definitely be back .

Yelp
Tried this place on a recent Friday night. You place your order at the counter and find your own seat. The staff was very attentive. I tried the caesar salad with chicken and well done fries. Everything was really fresh and tasty and they do not skimp on the shreds of parmesan on this salad. Very good. Highly recommend you stop by to try!

Yelp
Love this place it's our new neighborhood place!! They have a varied many but their breakfast is fantastic! Best pancakes in town! Very kid friendly

Yelp
I was on my nighttime walk when I noticed Gus and Andy's was officially open. Having skipped dinner it was the perfect time to indulge in a small bite. Upon entry, we were greeted by a member of the staff who said he'd be with us shortly. Their menu is quite extensive and I am happy to report that everything was in stock (contrary to others' reviews). EaterLA had done an article about Gus and Andy's that gave a bit of history to its origin. The hot dogs seemed like a special item to this family-owned business, so we tried both the Grill Dog and Big Dog with a side of small fries. Their small fries were large enough to share amongst two people! Do not skip on their thousand island dressing. It was quite unique and peppery! The space is absolutely gorgeous. I love that they have included some booth seating that reminds me a bit of Rocky Cola Cafe but completely upgraded and modernized. It is such a shame to see all these negative reviews for an establishment that has just opened its doors to the public. I think we need to approach their service, wait times, and skills in the kitchen with a bit more compassion as they get nestled into this beautiful neighborhood location. I enjoyed my meal along with a few beers from the bar. It's all a work in progress and I encourage you to support this awesome, local business.
google avatar

Derek P.

Yelp
Yikes. I tried the ahi tuna taco and wow it was like you described the concept of a taco to somebody who'd never seen one and then just set them loose. It's a single flour tortilla with cheese, tons of red cabbage, ahi tuna, picked onions, and "avocado" The ratios were all wrong and it suffered from a near total lack of flavor. I've never tasted more flavorless avocado and the cabbage was just kinda gross. The fish itself seemed fine, which is a real shame since it's an expensive protein. The picked onions were fine too. Guys! Make a couple of small tacos, slice the fish real thin, and just do that with the pickled onions and maybe an avocado crema or something light and citrusy. That's all you need! This was not a taco and it was less than the sum of its parts. Partner has a horribly burned coffee (likely just cooking away in the pot all day) and very mediocre fish and chips. Nice people and pretty fast but wow they need to work on their food. For a brand new place in such a nice building this was a huge disappointment!
google avatar

Brittany A.

Yelp
Cute little place. I enjoyed my salad, it tasted very fresh. Can tell it was prepared when I ordered it and not sitting ready in a fridge somewhere. Food came out really fast. It's sort of in between a full service and counter service restaurant. The salads might be one of the only gluten free options, but as a Celiac my salad didn't give me any issues.

Yelp
Consistently good food. Great customer service and friendly staff. The bar is great, too. Glad that they are in our neighborhood!

Yelp
Gus & Andy's is a newer diner style restaurant in Montrose! Decided to give it a try and the service made all the difference. The interior is clean (as it should be since the place is basically new) and I really liked that they open all the windows during the day so there's lots of fresh air. You order at the counter and are given a number to seat yourself. What we ordered: - Ahi Fish Taco $12.50 (4/5) When I first ordered, I was shocked that the waitress said that it was only 1 taco? Like what do you mean 1 large taco for $12.50. I was concerned that it wouldn't be enough for a meal, and just too large, but the waitress so nice and accommodating! She had them split it into two smaller tacos and it was just perfect for a light lunch. The avocado was great, fish was seared just the way I requested! - Iced Latte $6.00 (3/5) - Not that I was expecting a mind blowing latte, for 6 dollars i thought it would be at least pretty solid. Honestly it was just ok, coffee did its job. - Fish and Chips $14.00 (4/5) - A solid basket of fish and chips! My mother enjoys this dish and she orders fish and chips at various establishments. - Chicken BLTA $15.00 (4/5) - Bacon lettuce tomato and avocado with chicken! My dad said the sandwich was a solid choice. Two separate waitresses had recommended this as their favorite. The food was nothing to write home about, but the service really made this place worth coming back for! Everybody was so friendly and looking to make sure that you had all your needs met. This is a great local establishment!

John W.

Yelp
The eggs benedict has a thick slice (3/8th inch+) of super salty pork belly fat. not edible "bacon". A piece of tender Canadian bacon would be better. Hash- browns Potato's are perfect. pass on greasy tater tots, yep, grease tots.. The biscuits and gravy has a thick coat of red seasoning salt on top of biscuits. kills the biscuits, Way to salty, biscuits are fine. Gravy could be better if made in house and kitchen did not use SOSCO fatty sausage bits. Service was the best. 5 stars.

Yelp
A healthy sandwich spot with a full bar in the back?! And they've got NFL playing !!! And sincere and friendly service?! This is my go to from now on Let's go Niners!!!! :)))

Yelp
My friend TJ and I stopped in for lunch one afternoon on his suggestion since we were working in the area. Had some good lunch and met a few local patrons which made our time pretty fun. We are both bartenders and really liked how clean and organized everything was set up.

Yelp
We had dinner here on 12/09/23: The staff is lovely, accommodating, friendly, & provide good service. We ordered Grilled cheese w/ pork belly (comes with fries), some type of salad, & tatertots w/ bacon & cheese. I found the tatertots & grilled cheese mostly tasteless, just heavy w/ grease, but not a greasy taste. I want FLAVOR.... and there was no Flavor! More like heart-attack-on a plate. Prices were reasonable... but this isn't a restaurant I'd go to again.

Yelp
Great food and less expensive than Carl Jrs up the street. I did take out this time but it's a great lunch for those of us that work around here

Yelp
Came to pick up dinner here. Got chili cheese fries, chicken BLTA, bayou dip sandwich and fish and chips. Overall it was pretty good! I would definitely go back. But I would not get anything with the chili. It had little flavor needs some more spices! And the chili cheese fries barely had cheese. Biggest bummer ever as we were looking forward to those that most. One piece of fish was a bit over cooked and dry. Bayou dip was delicious! Perfect amount of spice! Added cheese and it was just muah... chefs kiss! Chicken BLTA also very good. Really big I only ate half. Staff was super nice!

Yelp
After driving by here serveral time we stopped in for lunch today! Place is very clean , has a bar area and dining area! Servers are very nice! I got Chile burger with fries and wife got veggie burrito! Chile burger was ok but lacked flavor, wife said vege burrito had rice and beans no vegtables and flavorless! I also tried there salsas which lacked flavor! Food is all about flavor and they fall way short!

Yelp
We had a wonderful lunch at Gus & Andy's. All 6 of us loved our food: burgers, sandwiches, salads and loaded baked potatos. Although you order at a counter and take a seat we had great service! Our drinks were refilled and we were checked on. Great job Vicki and team!

Yelp
I've been to this place twice now and I'm still trying to figure out why it has 3.5 stars. Both times I tried to look for flaws but both times they went above and beyond with service. Food selection is pretty solid as well. I would highly recommend you come to this place if you're looking for some elevated diner food with great customer service.
