On the Grid : Gus's Fried Chicken

"Newer to the neighborhood, but not new to the country, Gus's had humble beginnings down south in the 70's and now people say this is their favorite fried chicken in Chicago! I personally loved the fried green tomatoes." - Linsey Rosen

Offshore Rooftop Bar at Navy Pier to Remain Open after Labor Day | Eater Chicago

"Temporarily closed after a fire tore through the building on the morning a call was received by Chicago Fire Department at 8:23 a.m., the restaurant at 4731 W. Madison Street was reported as significantly damaged; a police officer was transported to a hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation but none of the employees were hurt. I noted the location is not formally affiliated with the Rickette family’s Uncle Remus Saucy Fried Chicken chain — it’s owned by the son of founder Gus W. Rickette Sr." - Naomi Waxman

Google
The food is great, the chicken is saucy and the roll is a nice touch, but the fries are always soggy, I would kill for some crispy fries or at least get crinkle cut so I know they’re gonna be soggy. The customer service has no pride, they speak behind glass so you can hardly hear and they don’t speak professionally which makes it difficult to understand. But this goes out to Gus Rickette Jr, please do some oversight at this location. The interior looks bad, the floor looks awful, your staff are rude and at night the place does not look the least bit inviting for customers at all. Dirty, dusty tiny cramped lobby with no seating or a chair to sit down in even. A TV on the wall, paint peeling, and why is there a framed wedding photo on the wall? What does this even entail for the restaurant’s history? It would attract more customers if the restaurant had some more pride to it, and it would be a great outlook for the community because none of my friends outside the west side ever wanna go there.

When they Hole in the wall this what they mean. Chicken not as good as the old location or the location inside Walmart. It doesn't cost much to create a welcoming environment for customers. Its filthy in the lobby. After waiting 20min for food. I requested an extra sauce. The cashier said $1.60 and had me take one step to the the left to take the money when she was literally handing me my food one footstep to the right. Crazy right?

Google
HORRIBLE SERVICE!! I placed an online order, waited about 30 minutes to go pickup the food. I arrived around 8:40pm. When I got inside, I was told that there was no order in my name. When I showed the order receipt, I was told that my order had been cancelled. When I asked why, I was told that they ran out of chicken. I believed that was a lie. They were set to close at 9pm. I believe they just didn't want to prepare more food right before closing. I was NEVER NOTIFIED that my order was cancelled. Such a terrible way to treat customers that patronize with their business. Well, they have one less customer to worry about.

Google
1st and foremost.. CUSTOMER SERVICE is IMPORTANT, someone took me to this place and there was a young lady that was there taking orders she was the most DISRESPECTFUL person I ran into she had a BAD ATTITUDE, NO COMMUNICATION NO NOTHING!! How can someone who owns this place have her working there!! A smile 😃 wouldn't hurt the food was not that good but all in all I'm not going back there the area could be better but that's how it is... also the in-side of the place could've been clean never ate at a bad restaurant... Well that's not a place for me, I hate I spent my money there also good-luck and next time I want me some chicken ill go on the south side maybe it's alittle better...but I WON'T BE BACK THERE!!!

Google
You guys serve the absolute worst quality of food. This chicken is soaked in hot sauce. No bbq sauce on it at all. The meat under the skin is so dry and nasty looking. The ribs taste old as hell. This ain't even uncle Remus sauce on this food. It's salty as well! The ribs tips so dry I had to spit it out so I can LIVE! you guys should be inspected by the health department cause ain't way y'all serving this kind of food when we out here spending out hard earned money to keep you S O.B open! Do better!

Google
I got a delivery from Uber eats thinking this was the real uncle Remus. The chicken still had feathers and the sauce was not the uncle Remus mild sauce. That’s how I know this place is a fraud. Don’t waste your time if you are trying to get authenticate uncle Remus. Go to the one off central.

Google
I don’t care how many times I come back to Chicago I will never and I repeat. I will never buy anything else from this restaurant again. Let me tell you something when I’m paying $25 for a Pan of chicken fries should be included not just the chicken your chicken ain’t that good every g pan of chicken I have ever gotten has came with fries, but you want somebody to pay $25 and pay up to $15 for some fries. You must got me messed up and we’re not gonna say I’m not from Chicago because I grew up in Chicago and I never recalled ever having to buy fries separate from a pan of chicken $25. The least y’all could do is put fries with it never again so you better take that $25 and get on down the yellow brick road cause you won’t ever get another dollar again. I could’ve just went to Popeyes and got a 10 piece meal For $25 at least I’m getting biscuits and two large sides versus just 10 pieces of chicken with some sauce on it. Overrated and pathetic.

Google
Asked For Mild Sauce & Got Barbecue On EVERYTHING. I Ordered From GrubHub & Talk To Someone On The Phone & The Person On The Phone Took My Name Down. I Went Up There To Get the Right Food WITH MILD SAUCE ON EVERYTHING & THEY SAYING THEY DONT EVEN HAVE BARBECUE SAUCE. They Asked Did I Wanna See The Sauce But Never Showed It. & I STILL NEVER RECEIVED THE RIGHT FOOD!

Yelp
Fraud! The sauce is not the sweet/tangy sauce of Uncle Remus, I highly doubt this place is affiliated with them. It's literally a hole in the wall with actual holes in the ceiling. The chicken is not seasoned. My sister and I were very disappointed. Go a mile up the road to the real spot.

Yelp
*****ATTENTION ATTENTION***** This place is disgraceful and disgusting!!! I ordered from them recently and someone from their staff took a bite out of my chicken and tucked the rest of it underneath another piece of chicken. I instantly vomited. When I tried calling to complain, no one ever decides to answer. DO NOT COME HERE!!! It's dirty, it's ghetto, random crack heads walk in and out. The staff is rude af. All they do is talk and talk Eat Anywhere else But this place!

Yelp
My partner and I were passing through this restaurant and area to get to Cragin, and we ordered ahead for pickup via Door Dash. The food was basically ready by the time we arrived. The food is delicious. The fries were somehow still crispy despite being drenched in mild sauce, and that's something that is rare for me. I'm so happy I didn't have soggy fries. The chicken skin was so crispy the breading came off as you bite it. The mild sauce is the perfect recipe. The chicken wings were a decent size and all of them were the same size. We did an order of 10 wings, and the app said fries were included but didn't mention bread so we did an order of bread and ended up with 3 slices of wheat bread. They were very generous with the mild sauce too. The place is in the West Garfield Park area of Chicago, and they also have a parking lot right beside the restaurant, and you can also do street parking. I personally love Uncle Remus and prefer it over Harold's any day. I'd recommend checking this place out, and it's some of the best fried chicken I've had in Chicago.

Yelp
Was pressed for time and it takes them forever to answer the phone so I decided to order online. I placed order as I drove to location. I went inside and was told that the site that I used was not for them and they did not have an order for me. I can't be the only one that experienced this. But there was no empathy/concern about an alleged bog site, the money that was taken, and wanted me to wait another 25min for food, oh, and I would have to pay again...very disappointed in this poor exhibit of customer service, I will never go to this location again

Yelp
They definitely redeemed themselves from the previous visit. Fish was made super fresh and it was made perfectly for me. It didn't take a long time to make either keep up the good work

Yelp
The food is amazing but they literally never answer the phone for orders. Good customer service but it takes at least 25min to get your food hence me always trying to call in.

Yelp
No Stars At All! This Place Is Horrible. I Mean Like From The Food To The Customer Service. I Placed An Order Threw Uber Eats. Had I Known That It Wasn't Even Uncle Remus I Wouldn't Have Ordered Anything. They Called To Tell Me That They Didn't Have Chicken Tenders And Asked Did I Want A Pizza Puff Instead. I Declined. So The Guy Got All Ghetto As Hell Like It Was My Fault That They Didn't Have Chicken Tenders. I Asked For A Refund And He Really Got Mad.

Yelp
There's a young lady that is so nice at taking orders, very professional. 1-22-22 at 3:11pm

Yelp
I order through Uber eats. An I put in notes and check plain chicken meaning no sauce and it still came with sauce on it. I order 2 orders of the 20 piece chicken. this is the second time that i order from this location and it making me highly upset. some of my family can't have that sauce on there chicken that why i order it plain and mild sauce on the side. but if keep coming with the sauce on it. So in other words my order was wrong again.  tried to call but the number i call no one answer and was not able to leave a voicemail. is no one reading the notes?  because I check pain and sauce on the side. I order 3 extra rolls and a large mild sauce and paid for them and didn't get them This is unacceptable! sirnite2001@gmail.com

Yelp
Great wings, I come all the way from Oak Brook. My wife tells me I'm crazy and i say no I'm insane for there wings . This white guy loves him some mild sauce

Yelp
The food is always awesome at this location. Whenever I'm in town, I have to stop in. I never have a problem waiting. The only reason I'm giving 1star is because of the cashier MAXINE. She could use a customer service prep class. She is very rude and never smiles. I said HELLO, she looked as if she was a deer crossing a road, after I paid and said thank you, she looked and rolled her eyes. Other customers were complaining about her attitude. Actions like this makes businesses look really bad. Please give this young lady a people skills class or move her to the back so she can cook and stay away from the public.

Yelp
The chicken wings were re-cooked and tasted terrible I do not recommend this restaurant. I do not plan to return. I bought 10 chicken wings and a can pop it cost $17.07 the prices are very high.

Allen H.

Yelp
I had the privilege of initially tasting their wings at the WingOut festival held in Old Town. Food was fresh and delicious then and when I visited their location!! Thank You again
