"They don’t call it world famous for nothing. Grab a plate of your white and dark meat mix of choice, and the mac and cheese and greens are highly recommended sides. If you’ve got room after all of that, the sweet potato pie is a must." - Courtney E. Smith, Amy McCarthy

"With two DFW locations in Dallas and Fort Worth, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken calls theirs “the best fried chicken in the world.” Unlike Nashville-style chicken, which is usually drenched in a cayenne-oil sauce, the heat is built right into the crispy batter on the outside of the chicken. Add house-baked whole pies and traditional sides like fried okra and fried green tomatoes for the full southern experience." - Rachel Pinn

The chicken was quite possibly the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. Like ever. The breeding was crispy, slightly spicy 🌶️ and falling off the bone tender. The jalapeños were great, pickled and still crispy and the perfect addition to this meal. The coconut pie I would quite possibly add to my list of “best thing I’ve ever eaten” list. The Mac and cheese was also commendable and up for “best of my life” quality. Go. Right now. Go

I'm giving them 3 stars because their service affected my experience. My family and I walked in shortly after they opened. The first employee we encountered just stared at us and walked away, so I had to take the initiative to say good morning. When you walk into a room, it's customary to greet people, and if you're serving customers, it's expected. Even though they had just opened, we continued to receive the same awkward stares and lack of greetings from other employees who were setting up. The woman who took our order was slightly more friendly. We ordered two two-piece dark meals with mac and cheese and fries. The food was pretty good. However, due to our experience with their service, we won't be visiting again.

Google
Perfect location Downtown🌆 Dallas, the atmosphere it's lively and the chicken 🍗 is hot and fresh. No frills dining in the heart of the city!! The chicken was delicious and didn't last long on my plate☺️ I was pleasantly surprised that the sides were also tasty. Prices are good in my opinion. I would return if I find myself in the area, especially on a late night!

Finally tried the World Famous Gus’s Fried Chicken 🍗 And it did not miss! A few friends have been telling me about this place, and I finally got to visit on my last trip to Dallas. Things I loved: -The chicken is fried to order y’all! -You will get HOT and FRESH chicken -The chicken is spicy (I love spicy food) I ordered the 2-piece dark combo, and it comes with beans and coleslaw with a piece of bread. Classic, and it was fantastic. My date ordered a larger plate with the fried okra as a side. He cleaned his plate. We ordered the sweet potato pie as take-out because we were both so full. The pie was amazing by the way - get it! S/N: This location is in Deep Ellum, so you know it’s prime real estate. The staff was super friendly and showed great hospitality, even though you could tell they were pretty busy. Shoutout to our server Lay, because she was so sweet, accommodating, and great at her job! I went on a date here Friday night and came back sauturday afternoon for lunch. That’s how impressed I was with the quality of food and level of service here. Don’t sleep on this place. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Dallas, because I’m obsessed!

Google
Chicken is great and cooked to perfection! Just a little bit of spice/tang, but not overly powerful. I do not like their mac and cheese- they have changed their receipe. Otherwise, I recommend them to my family and friends.

Google
Great service, food came out in a decent time. Chicken was fresh and hot, crispy and juicy. Could use some heat but all in all good. Mac and cheese was delicious! Creamy gooey cheesy hot. I absolutely loved the slaw, it was fresh crisp cold and flavorful. It was definitely a hit here and will be returning. Prices are ok, for the product it’s worth it. Check it out.

As someone from Memphis, Tennessee, the home of Gus’s, this location does not disappoint. Everything is hot and fresh, how I like it if you’ve never had Gus before, this is the place to go! I always get the family pack and substitute the thighs for more wings. Baked beans and mac & cheese is what we like the most out of the side options. The greens, and fried okra are also delicious.

Yelp
Best fried chicken! Always a delicious meal and the service was super friendly! Taylor was a fantastic waitress!

Yelp
Lay was wonderful hands down the best server and her attitude is amazing ask for her if you eat in

Braxton R.

Yelp
I ordered a 2pc dark. Chicken was super fresh and juicy! Lay was an amazing server and made sure I was taken care of. Very chill vibe. 10/10 will be back

Jordansmommy C.

Yelp
Really really Good. Served hot and fresh. Had three pieces white meat with fries and mac and a slice of Sweet Potato Pie Delicious Irish is a sweet host/cashier

Dustin U.

Yelp
I was so impressed with this place when it first opened. The last several times I've been it was terrible. Food quality is down, service is down, it went from being my favorite chicken spot to being a place I'll likely never go back to. It amazes me how poorly this place is run. Management should be replaced.

Yelp
Great food, best Fried Chicken & potato salad!! Sweet tea! & desserts!! Service was excellent!!

Yelp
Ever been to a place, and as you walk up to it, the customers just leaving are raving about how good it is and stop you to tell you about it? How about as you are about to order, the staff starts offering suggestions on what is really good that day without you asking? How about mouth-watering signage outside that had you craving it for weeks? THIS is THAT PLACE! Great friendly service as I walked in. Not just wanting to take my order, but spending a few seconds getting to know me and then suggesting the potato salad as a side. The price was reasonable and the order was ready, surprisingly quick! I ordered 3 pieces of chicken, fried okra, and that potato salad they made me crave! It was well-packed as I was getting it to go. People, that was great tasty, spicy (not too hot) fried batter. It tightly locked in the moisture of the chicken! REALLY good. REALLY moist! The potato salad was the best I think I've ever had. Seriously! The okra was good, but it wasn't as great as the chicken and the potato salad. Dining in early on a Sunday will be my next trip. It has a cool and quaint interior filled with an enticing decor. I wanted to see more, but my order was ready and my taste buds were demanding I get after that chicken! .

Yelp
As awesome as the Memphis & San Antonio locations. It was a short walk from the DART station to the restaurant. It has the same vibe inside as other locations. We split a half chicken platter with and extra side of Mac & cheese. I also got a root beer float! Talk about a great Sunday brunch. Our server was also as great as the food. The chicken was, as always, crispy & moist. The sides were hot and fresh. We were also allowed to substitute an extra thigh for the leg. The joint really started to fill up as we ate. It's obviously popular in Deep Ellum, as it should be. Make the trip. It is soooooo worth it.

Yelp
Food (3.5/5): I ordered the 2 piece dark chicken, but got 3. The seasoning is decent, but I didn't really care for the skin. I usually like my skin super crispy and crunchy which they didn't have. The fried okra was good and the seasoned fries, mine at least, were not that seasoned-the sides were both good, but mediocre. I had some of my friend's Mac and cheese that was good, but none of it really amazed me. Overall, the food was average, because I didn't find anything that special; very much mediocre. However, my friend really liked this place-he's the only reason why I went here. Service (3.5/5): Service was good. Nothing special. I ordered the 2 piece dark meat, but the server gave me 3 pieces and charged me for 3. I only ate 1 1/2 of the meats and gave one to my friend. I feel like service wise, I would suggest them to improve by repeating the order. Ambiance (3.5/5): Extremely casual, full of families and friends. The vibes were giving Ft Worth vibes. It's different from what I'm used to, but I believe the food, ambiance, and store visuals do tie together. I feel like a 3 makes it look bad, but to me, a 3 is just average. This store wasn't bad or good, but average. My friend really likes this place, but I have specific qualifications when it comes to fried chicken. I personally wouldn't come back, but if he wanted to, I would go just for him.

Yelp
Shay Shay our server gave outstanding service, very professional. Food was great and will definitely come again!

Yelp
Whenever I get a craving for fried chicken this is where I go. It always hits the spot.

Yelp
Love this place. Fried chicken is crispy hot, everything is served hot even the fries. Large serving of fries, so tasty! Years ago I visited the Austin location. This location in San Marcos is just as good as Austin, it's only missing one thing that Austin had. Long, long lines going out the door. It's great to live in San Marcos.

Stephen W.

Yelp
Wow wow wow. This chicken is fantastic, phenomenal, stupendous, mouth-watering addiction, you fill in the adjective. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and today we made it here after going to Fair Park. Parking was not too bad. I paid in the private lot and subsequently found out from another Yelp review they will validate although it is not clear how that process works. It's$5 for 2 hours so that is not too bad. I had the 3 piece dark, the wife the two piece dark, and the kid had tenders with fries. The wait was pretty long after placing our order, I would say about 40-45 minutes. But the first bite (and every one thereafter) made the wait worthwhile. The chicken came out fresh from the fryer and was steaming hot. So they make the chicken to order. The old cliche, you have not had fried chicken until you have eaten at Gus's. The outside is crunchy, the inside is moist and tender. The flavor had a little kick but is not "hot." They do not offer different flavor profiles to choose from, it's all one flavor. But the flavor is simply addictive. You finish your piece and want to clean the bones, it is that good. Hands down, the best fried chicken I have ever had. In my life. Period. We are fans. I will probably dream about Gus's fried chicken until we are able to return. Prices are reasonable.

The Black Critic Reviews R.

Yelp
As a Memphian, I take my fried chicken seriously, and this place lives up to the standards set by Gus's. Everything is served hot and fresh, just the way I like it. If you've never tried Gus's before, this is definitely the spot to visit! My go-to order is the family pack with extra wings instead of thighs. And let me tell you, the baked beans and mac & cheese steal the show when it comes to sides. But don't sleep on the greens and fried okra--they're equally delicious. A true taste of Memphis

Quiana T.

Yelp
Ok so I had an unique first time experience that I wouldn't say was good or bad. I read a comment about confusion on how the flow of seating operate and I would agree. It felt like a takeout restaurant that just so happened to have a dining area as no one seated you. I observed a group seat themselves but was unsure how the food ordering was going to take place as it didn't appear to be a server. Now on to the food. I ordered the 2pc white and it was hot and fresh. It was pretty good. As for the sides, the fries tasted like a frozen bag from the grocery store and the coleslaw was too sweet for my liking. I asked about the baked beans and was politely told to substitute bcuz they weren't good. So I did just that so I'm passing the word. The Mac and cheese looked blah and not homemade so don't have high expectations.

Gmala D.

Yelp
I like the tenders and the fries they were good. and the mac & cheese was extra creamy

Alexis R.

Yelp
Shay Shay was and excellent server! Treated My husband and baby girl with the upmost respect and kindness!! Really recommend this place!! Very delicious fried chicken!! Thank you Shay Shay!!!

Christina C.

Yelp
Shay was 100/100 service! We will be back for her customer service!food was fresh and quick

Angela F.

Yelp
This is a cute trendy little spot. Very sweet friendly and helpful staff. Chicken was fresh and delicious. So juicy. Mac and cheese was is the bomb omg so gooey with cheese and flavor. Baked beans are very tasty. Can't wait til next time !!

Aron J.

Yelp
The menu is very simple and not that much to pick from. I ordered the 3 piece dark. The chicken was great and had a lot of flavor to it. The portion though was sadly pretty small. Overall the food was great but small portions. Still left hungry

L W.

Yelp
Amazing food! Just the right amount of spice and marinade on the fried chicken. Crispy and fresh off the fryer. Crispy skin with almost zero chicken fat, juicy meat on the inside. Mac-n-cheese flavor and texture very good, not liquidy or gooey. Greens are cooked just right, not mushy or crunchy. Okra is so-so. Potato salad flavor and ingredient mix are good. A bit of chewy egg white strips, a bit of crunchy greens, but potato is a bit chunky. Service is exceptional. Ashley and the crew were friendly and helpful. Overall 5-star lunch experience.

Ternesha W.

Yelp
Gus's Chicken is one of my favorite chicken spots. No matter which one I go to, the chicken is always on point. Flavorful, crispy and hot! And the okra (big fan of okra) and coleslaw compliment the chicken well. Once you try this place, you will be hooked! FYI, this particular location isn't very big and parking is a bit difficult.

Rreyana H.

Yelp
Lay was awesome and very knowledgeable about the menu! I was worried coming in so close to open but she reassured me of how ready they were to get people serviced. Food is alwayyyss on 10, its refreshing that so is the customer service :))

Cat N.

Yelp
The fried chicken itself was pretty good. Sides like collard greens, potato salad, baked beans could use more seasoning. Coke slaw was perfect. Would definitely get it again! They do black and white meat well. White meat wasn't dry

Ken P.

Yelp
The most confusing service I have ever received!!! As a first time customer I walk in and wait in line with everyone else. After being in line for 15 mins I tell the cashier I wanted to dine in. I ordered and paid my $29 bill and sat where I wanted to eat. There was no one in the dining room seating anyone or helping anyone. Everyone was in the back, I guess for a break. When they came back they forced me to move from my lovely table. The place I ordered is for to go ONLY (how is anyone supposed to know). The dining room is only for people who will pay a tip to the server. How they expect walk-ins off the street to understand all of this without proper signage I don't know. Then to force me to leave my sitting after I paid. Let's get to the food. Since they made it a to go order (after I asked for dine in) they forgot a lot of things. No condiments (didn't ask) no forks or spoons. No napkins. The fries were soggy, Mac n cheese I won't get again. I'm not saying it's bad but anyone can mix velvetta with pasta. The okra was good. The chicken is pretty good, I wouldn't say it's the best but had it not been for my experience I probably would come back Chicken solid 3.5 stars, sides 1.5 stars, horrible service minus 3 stars.

Chelsea O.

Yelp
Yum! So glad I was finally able to try this place. Stopped in on my way home and got it to go. Service was great and waited maybe 10 mins for my order. Parking stinks, as with most places in deep ellum. I got the three tenders - comes with two sides. Got Mac and cheese and beans. Everything was so great! I've never had chicken breaded like that!! It was slightly spicy - which I don't LOVE but I still ate every bite. Beans and Mac were 10/10. Will be back ‼

Martin K.

Yelp
I thought I had good fried chicken before, but I was wrong, because this was another level. The perfectly fried, crunchy skin with mild spice that builds with every bite but never overwhelms. The juicy, delicious meat inside. It doesn't get better than this. The slaw is really good, too, and the service is down home friendly. All around a great experience!

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Second time trying this place out. Order delivery via UberEats on a Tuesday evening around 6 PM. Food arrived after 30 minutes. Order was completed correctly. They didn't have "Three Piece Dark" that I got last time available on UberEats at the time that I placed the order (probably sold out), so I went with the "Three Tenders". Three Tenders - Chicken breast. The outside was not as battered as the three-piece dark & not as much flavor. The outside was rather chewy and perhaps overcooked. The inside was relatively moist for breast, but of course not as moist as dark meat. Chicken was rather bland compared to last time. Potato Salad - Not as flavorful as last time I ordered it & more watery. This shows some inconsistency. Macaroni and Cheese - Likely Baked as it was on the dryer side of mac & cheese. Topped with what looks like chipotle powder, but doesn't add much flavor to the mac & cheese. I would not get this side again. Fried Pickle Spears - moderately crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. Flavor is pretty average. I've had butter fried pickle spears elsewhere, but these were fine...good...pickle spears - not disappointing, but not outstanding. Overall, I was quite disappointed with this experience since I had such a great experience the first time I ordered from this place. Looks like I'll have to wait another few months for a third try to come to a solid conclusion. Not sure if I would recommend based on this experience. Inconsistency is one of my pet peeves.

Mike K.

Yelp
Food was decent. I was honestly slightly disappointed given the hype of the place but it was good enough to somewhat understand their good reputation. Some of the staff were very attentive and nice but we ended up with a waitress who didn't pay us any attention so that was frustrating. They have a parking lot but be aware of people standing by charging to park in the lots near by. Never experienced such a thing so not sure if it was a scam or not. We ended up parking a few blocks away since the immediate lot was full

Lia A.

Yelp
I love Gus's Fried Chicken, it is soooo good. The service is always great, highly recommend giving Gus's a try if you haven't already.

Jonathan R.

Yelp
I've ordered a chocolate chess pie for delivery four. Separate. Fucking. Times. They either cancel it or send me a piece. Order in the morning? They can't manage. Order at night? They can't manage. They DO manage to consistently make the driest chicken I've had from the four locations I've eaten from. Pathetic. Edit-Don't say I don't try to be fair. This is admittedly my first AM order from this location and it is definitely juicy and fresh. Maybe bad luck the three other times I've gotten food here later in the day. Y'all 1000% need to remove the whole pie option from any and all delivery platforms to stop deceiving your customers, though.

Stephen M.

Yelp
This is the fried chicken of your dreams. I bet this chicken can cure depression because it's so damn good. That first bite you take is unlike anything.

Rachel D.

Yelp
Yoooo. I love this place. I'm so shocked at how good this food was. I have been living in Dallas for 12 years and for the last few years I said I was going to visit this place. I'm just now doing so and I regret waiting so long. I dislike the location but they do get you an hour of free parking if visiting them for purchase. I will definitely be back with my husband and suggest

Jessica T.

Yelp
Service was fantastic the several times we've been here. Food is always hot, fresh, and tasty. Ambiance is great, smaller place but it's still great.

Mark S.

Yelp
Food is great .. server was the best.. Lay was the best .. my family always come here..

Richard B.

Yelp
I love it...this is not Nashville hot chicken its just awesome fried chicken It is spicy and they do not have a plain or original non spicy version (it's not very hot, just spicy) Cute little place in deep ellum...it has pay parking but they will validate your parking

Mykie D.

Yelp
I don't know what it is about this location. But they never get it right. The chicken isn't spicy like it is at the Fort Worth location. Tastes like dirty grease.

melanie h.

Yelp
Walking in the door Lay and Crystal was on point! Perfect customer service presentation which allowed the food to be even more delicious! Chicken on point! Fried green tomatoes on point! Baked beans on point! Potato salad on point! All around "10" in every direction! Thank you for a perfect first experience! Melanie R.

Julie K.

Yelp
Juicy hot fresh fried chicken with that batter. Brings me back pioneer or church's chicken but better of course. Crispy very slight spicy batter, even tenders the chicken was juicy. Price was affordable for what you get. Got a 2 pc chicken plate, you get bread, slaw but for .50 cent more you can swap it out for a different side I got greens. Greens was Smokey bacon, hint of sweetness to balance the bitter greens. The max and cheese, cheesy and baked. Fried pickles good balance of batter and pickle, fresh and hot w dipping sauce of your choice. With $2.50 you can get souvenir cup and free refill. The chess pie, can get it warmed or cold, hot I got it cold the top crust was flakey and was delicious w gooey inside. Would recommend this place.

Katie G.

Yelp
My partner tried Gus's for the first time in San Antonio and loved it! She's a big fried chicken fan. When we found out about this location she was so happy to be able to have it again. It's a decent size restaurant. Nothing fancy just a chill spot. You seat yourself but we are usually greeted when we enter and helped fairly quick. The service is always pretty good. We love their fried okra and Mac n cheese. Their chicken is pretty good as well. The plate is served with a slice of bread. It's not very spicy in my opinion so I love that they have hot sauce on the table to add. I also recommend the fried pickles appetizer. They are good! And the ranch that comes with it is delicious too! My only complaint is you have to ask for a disposable cup otherwise you are always served in a Gus's cup which just feels wasteful because I don't want a hundred of them at home and I hate leaving them behind since I'm sure they're just trashed so unless you want the souvenir cup, be sure to ask for a disposable cup. Definitely a chill, delicious food spot to check out in a great area with plenty other to explore.

Julia K.

Yelp
You definitely have to try to fried chicken here. Gus's fried chicken is fried in peanut oil, which lets the chicken reach high temperatures without smoking, giving it that extra crispiness. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. It comes piping-hot and has great flavor. Love the extra kick of heat they add in. You also have to try the fried green tomatoes and the homemade pies. They heat up the pies for you so that its nice and warm. Overall, the chicken is on point, the music is lit, and the service is just spectacular.

Laura O.

Yelp
The food was piping hot, and the chicken was so delicious. I didn't even need to put any sauce on it. The spices and the crispiness spoke for itself. The wait staff was very friendly and went out of their way to make me feel at home. I would highly recommend this place.

Kalpesh K.

Yelp
Came here before we flew out of TX, originally wanted Babes Chicken, but it was too far.The place was clean and not to busy when we got there at 1.30p.m on a Tuesday. The staff were friendly, you order at the table.and they bring you your food and bill at the end. All chicken is made to order so does take like 15-20 min. Batter is not too thick and the chicken is pretty good. Fries could only been more well done and yes I did ask for well done fries. I don't really eat much fried food and want disappointed with our choice.

Austin R.

Yelp
Visited Gus's Famous Fried Chicken quite a few times now - mostly with my work buddies at lunch. The chicken tenders? Huge. You definitely won't go hungry here. But, I've got to tell you, something about the breading doesn't do it for me. It kind of feels like it's been hanging out in the oil a bit too long, and the taste... Well, it's sort of plain, you know? No wow factor, just kind of, there. The ranch is the same story. I was expecting that tangy, cool kick, but it's just not there. Ended up needing to dunk the chicken in hot sauce just to give it a little zing. Maybe I just caught them on an off day. That happens, right? Thing is, I've been here four times now, and it's always the same. Each time, I keep hoping they'll turn it around, but so far, no dice. Overall, if you're all about quantity, Gus's Famous Fried Chicken might do it for you. But for me, the flavor and texture are missing the mark. Still, I've got my fingers crossed for a flavor upgrade on my next visit.. The interior is clean and well kept and the staff are friendly but you may not get a refill on your drink unless you stop them.

Tiffani D.

Yelp
Gus's has great fried chicken and sweet tea! The fried pickles were tasty as well. Definitely recommend!

L A.

Yelp
Our order was over cooked and yet they decided to serve it to us still making the chicken almost dry and flavor lacking. Could we have sent it back? Yes, but we don't want to wait another 30 minutes as we need yo get going. Mind you, there were only a handful if customers abs yet the cook still messed up the cooking. Compares to Gus in Austin, it was packed when we went there but our orders still came out perfect! Unlike this one in Dallas. 5 stars to the servers who were really friendly.

Bess D.

Yelp
Late night Deep Ellum munchies tickling?! Saunter over to Gus's--- the grease, the flavor, the ambiance that you crave is here! Friendly warm staff, concrete cracked floors, exposed brick walls and people that want to learn your name all here. As a fried pickle fanatic I appreciate the fried spears on the starters menu. Crisp and tangy perfection. Chicken is served nearly any way you want. All dark. All white. Tenders only?! Any and all are available for your selection. Yes you will wait a bit. Yes it is worth it - fried made to order awesomeness!

Yelp
Delicious, moist fried chicken. The service was decent. They were out of Mac & Cheese the day we went, which was disappointing. But the chicken was worth it.
