Best Austin Restaurants Near Austin Convention Center | Eater Austin

"Famously hot and spicy fried chicken is plentiful at this fried chicken chain’s Austin location. The vibe is full-on country, with checkered tablecloths and friendly counter service. Pair the fried bird with comforting sides like baked beans, fried okra, and mac and cheese. Takeout and delivery orders can be placed online." - Erin Russell

The Best Fried Chicken Restaurants in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"They don’t call it world famous for nothing. Grab a plate of your white and dark meat mix of choice, and the mac and cheese and greens are highly recommended sides. If you’ve got room after all of that, the sweet potato pie is a must." - Courtney E. Smith

Was craving fried chicken and decided to try out Gus's World Famous. It's a quaint place. Friendly greetings by staff. Got seated and looked over the menu. Decided to order some fried green tomatoes as an app. A 3 piece dark meat combo, and their wing special. First note. There is a $0.50 charge for switching sides... not even some premium side, just any other sides besides baked beans and slaw. So rather than order a la carte sides, we made some changes. Ordered mac and potato salad. Since I ordered wings, I wanted a side of ranch. Sauces do not come with the meal. They are $0.55 ea. We got our app. The batter was very tasty and even though i dont think tomatoes are necessarily in season. These tomatoes were soft and goopy. Bit into one and it felt like a hot booger in my mouth. I stopped after that. The tomatoes were way too ripe had an awful texture. But the batter was good. When we got our main dishes, the wings were stone cold. Not even warm, just room temp sat in some bin wings. I did however get an extra wing, but that doesn't really make a difference as they were all still cold. The batter on the wings was tasty but overly salty. The mac and cheese had good flavor, but was also cold. They sprinkled some shredded cheese that didn't even melt. The potato salad was probably the best tasting thing we ate. The chicken thighs were cooked fresh (thankfully) but we did get fairly small pieces. For the price that we paid, it's a little underwhelming. The batter again was flavorful but overly salty. The baked beans were very basic. Tasted like canned Heinz beans and the slaw while fresh, was lacking flavor. Just very bland and missing something, (added pepper, didn't help) Overall, it was a pretty mediocre experience (food wise). Food isn't even close to something that could be considered World Famous. It's was fair, at best. After this experience, there isn't anything that would draw me back to visit. Wish I would've come in their hey day.

I've visited twice. First time my husband insisted this was the best fried chicken. The second time I was alone and rubbed it in my husbands face that I stopped. The staff has been quick service, even short staffed. Food is hot, fresh, and flavored with love. The atmosphere is comfy.

Google
Man after all they hype I gotta say I’m a bit disappointed it’s not terrible but man if mid fried chicken needed a mascot it would be this place. I won’t even get started on the sides I know can pork n beans and collard greens from a can when I taste it. I didn’t eat the pies but my wife said the sweet potato pie was great and the chess pie was awful. But the service and atmosphere was awesome very friendly staff and just an awesome little dive spot to have a few drinks.

Let me get straight to the point—my experience at Gus’s Famous Fried Chicken was frustrating and disappointing. I ordered the 4-piece wing special with mac and cheese and fries. But before I even got to the food, I witnessed something that really turned my stomach. One of the employees, wearing gloves, rubbed his nose multiple times—then continued handling food without changing gloves. I voiced my concern to another staff member, who did go speak to him. But instead of taking accountability, the employee walked by the food prep area and slapped his dirty gloves down on the counter where food was being sent out. It was careless and unhygienic, and it took away any appetite I had. As for the food: Fries: Plain, underseasoned, and forgettable. Honestly, I could’ve made better fries at home with a frozen bag and an air fryer. 1 out of 5. Mac & Cheese: It tasted like a mix of Kraft and homemade, but with almost no seasoning outside of what looked like paprika on top. Just bland. 2 out of 5. Chicken: The seasoning was completely off incredibly salty to the point where it was hard to eat. Not sure if it was a one-off issue, but it didn’t leave a good impression. 2 out of 5. Between the lack of basic hygiene and the underwhelming food, I left disappointed and unlikely to return. This experience fell far short of what I expected from a place that calls itself “famous.”

Google
We had dinner here last night. The “world’s best fried chicken” is an understatement The chicken is crunchy and juicy. Omg the fried green tomatoes are to die for! We were way too full to even think of ordering dessert. The portions were very generous compared to the price.

Google
They got the fried chicken! It's good, you should go. I normally get their 3 pieces chicken tenders (wich are a delicacy where I come from). They are served with 2 sides. All of the sides are incredible, but I normally get the mac & cheese and the collard greens. This is in my opinion the best combination on the menu 👌. Then you have to snag a jalapeno, man those things sure are hot. Lastly wash it down with a good old Dr. Pepper. Unless your in the mood for a Pabst Blue Ribbon. Anyway best dang friend chicken on magnolia. The staff is always friendly too. I met this guy named Catfish (lol I know funny name but that's what everyone calls him) this guy knows how to cook. He always has a smile and greats me by name when I walk through the door. Paige served me my food. I guess there is such a thing as southern hospitality. Bar clean, lobby clean, bathroom clean, frome what I could see back of house was clean. Thank you Guy's World Famous Fried Chicken for setting standards! You Rock!

We were in Fort Worth for a conference and my boss really wanted to go to Gus's. I too wanted to try some fried chicken from Texas. The place looked like a blast from the past. It did look like one of those chicken shacks you saw on tv in the 80s. I loved it. The wait staff was super polite and helpful. I ordered a two piece with cole slaw and fried okra. I also ordered some fried green tomatoes. I tore those up. They also have free refills on the iced tea. The food was inexpensive and good. We were all quiet as we ate. I can't wait to go back.

Google
I only have 4 stars because the chicken strips were so big, but they were delicious. All of the sides were great and the service was excellent. We had a great server.

Yelp
This place is out of Memphis.....and it's about the best fried chicken I've ever had anywhere. And trust me, I've had fried chicken in a lot of states and a lot of places. And no matter what Gus's location you go to....they are all so very consistent (and) just like what you'd have at the original Memphis location. Fried chicken: it has this certain outside fried crusty crispy skin...that is unlike most any other fried chicken. Then...the meat...so juicy...and I mean juicy. Now, the sides didn't used to be so great (years ago). Well, their sides are all very very good. The pit beans...the Cole slaw....okra...it's all darn good stuff. If I could have 6 or 7 stars for a review...I would give Gus's 7 stars!

Yelp
Now I like fried chicken but this is out of this world delicious. Just the right amount of spice. Had 2 pieces of dark and got the coleslaw and potato salad - all of it excellent. The joint is average on a great street - Magnolia. The coconut pie is what put this over the top - man that was good. Selection of drinks and service is solid. Will make this a regular stop.

Yelp
Update: went here again and OMG.... Why can't I give more than 5 stars?!?!?! This time our server was Daniel and he was very outgoing, playful and good at what he does! And once again the chicken is consistently amazing! The restaurant wasn't too packed. And of course we got to see our favorite young man there again! Terrell, he and Daniel have such a warm welcoming vibe! See ya'll soon!!

Yelp
We were in Fort Worth for an errand, and I'll take any excuse to turn a trip into a fun lunch adventure. Today's pick was this spot, and let me tell you--it did not disappoint! The surrounding neighborhood was great for a little post-lunch stroll, and the restaurant itself was clean, well-staffed, and had an overall welcoming vibe. The employees actually looked happy to be there, which usually means the place is run well--always a good sign! If fried green tomatoes are on a menu, I will attempt to order them. Hubby, however, is not as easily convinced. It's a battle I lose more often than I win, but today? Victory! And these were totally worth it--crispy, well-seasoned, and a great start to the meal. We also split the fried chicken plate, which comes with two pieces and two sides. The chicken is fried to order, so it arrived piping hot and perfectly spicy. As for sides--GET. THE. MAC. AND. CHEESE. Seriously, it was the star of the show. The coleslaw was solid too, but let's just say we were not fighting over that. The mac and cheese, on the other hand? A full-on fork battle for every last bite. Great food, friendly service, and a fun atmosphere--we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Chicken was fried to perfection and seasoned just right. Joe was very nice and his service was excellent. Has an old time feel and atmosphere made me feel like when life was simple.

Yelp
The food was decent. The fried green tomatoes, sweet tea, and service was impeccable. I would eat there again but would say no to the coleslaw and macaroni and cheese.
google avatar

Yelp
Started with an appetizer; fried green tomatoes...They were great!! I would say delicious if they offered homemade ranch! Heads up the chicken strips or tenders ARE NOT SEASONED LIKE THE BONE IN CHICKEN... I ordered the White meat chicken; it was seasoned to the bone VERY a GOOD baked beans, potato salad, macaroni & collard greens were all good ... I just suggest hot water bread for those greens! Louisiana gal gives 5 stars for the chicken... it was better than southern classic!!

Dennis E.

Yelp
Maybe I don't get it, but the wings are too hot to eat. I just don't understand why people enjoy suffering for a meal, let alone paying to suffer. If you love food that makes your mouth numb and gives you indigestion, go for hot wings like these. Just not for me.

Yelp
Best Fried Chicken I've ever had! Coleslaw and Mac and Cheese was so delicious, large portions and Super friendly server. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Elizabeth A. H.

Yelp
The restaurant is loud s, not a place for intense conversations. However the fried chicken is phenomenal! You will not be disappointed. The macaroni and cheese was worth the $.50 substitution charge. The service here is friendly and they have quite a few beers for drink options.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Everything we got did not disappoint! Our waiter was very kind, and made sure we were enjoying everything. We started with the Fried Okra, and it was yummy. My husband got the fried chicken place with beans and Mac & Cheese and did not leave one crumb on his plate. I got the chicken wing plate with potato salad and coleslaw. The chicken was crispy and moist, and cooked perfectly! We took some Pecan Pie to go, and so good!
google avatar

Phi N.

Yelp
We came in for lunch and was already able to be seated with the lunch crowd. We opted for the special of the day and a 3-pc tender plate. Service was great and quick. Prices were reasonable and the lunch special pricing was a pleasant surprise since I originally was only going to get the 2-pc plate originally. We've been here several times and at the original location in TN and they're always delicious. I think the batter seasoning has changed slightly since the chicken used to have a better spicier kick to it but it's still good and crispy. I was able to air fry my leftovers the next day and it still tasted delicious!
google avatar

Channa T.

Yelp
I'm ABSOLUTELY in love with this place!!! Every time I'm in Fort Worth I come here & they never miss!!! Be prepared to pay for parking & it's ridiculous.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
We had a great experience at Gus's. We ordered the three piece and got an extra side of the mac n cheese. Everything was 10/10! Chicken was so flavorful and all the sides were great too. I am blown away how they got such a great crisp on the breast with it remaining so juicy. Chelsea took great care of us too. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Pancho A.

Yelp
Meh chicken was really good they only cook it one way, ordered allot of food and they said they couldn't make it plain so they also said it wasn't spicy but it actually was my poor sister couldn't eat it. Now the sides that lost stars the sides were actually not good. I'll pass on the sides
google avatar

M T.

Yelp
The chicken is good and spicey, but $16 for 3 wings (that doesn't inclde the drink), which is $3 for an 8 ounce cup is a bit pricey. Its more if you want to change the sides from the standard beans and slaw. Also parking is a nightmare.

Yelp
I must say I'm very disappointed...... In myself ;) I can't believe it took me this long to try Gus's world famous fried chicken! My girlfriend and I just happened to be on the subject of chicken and of course the almighty fried chicken entered the conversation lol, so she suggested we go out Saturday night to get some and the search began of where we would go to satisfy our craving. Obviously as an Elite squad yelper I definitely know some legit spots to get good fried chicken and we ended up with two options we were gonna choose from Babe's chicken dinner house or Gus's world famous fried chicken, I have been to Babe's but not Gus's and she had been to Gus's but not Babe's lol. We will go to Babe's very soon (Review coming) but on this occasion Gus's got the nod and let me tell y'all, I was very happy with that decision. Gus's is a cool little spot on Magnolia and we were able to sit immediately even on a busy Saturday night, we both ordered the 3 piece dark plate, I substituted the beans and slaw for mac & cheese and potato salad. The chicken is soooo good! It's got a nice hint of spicy on the dark golden batter which I love and a really nice crunch to it as well also a big plus for me, it was very juicy and you can tell they keep up on their fryers and oil as the chicken had a clean fresh taste. The mac & cheese was delicious and very cheesy, potato salad very good and fresh, there was nothing disappointing about this meal besides the fact that I should have tried it a long time ago!! The only thing I missed was the fact that they do not serve mash potatoes, gravy, corn, biscuits or rolls which are some things I'm just accustomed to having with fried chicken. Their sides lean more on the bbq joint side to me but delicious none the less. So don't waste any time like me, if you're looking to go out and have some great fried chicken don't hesitate to head over to Gus's world famous fried chicken, you will not be disappointed!!
google avatar

Beth F.

Yelp
World famous for a reason! Perfect!! Fried chicken. Not too bread-y, spicy enough, but not so spicy you cannot taste the chicken. Sides are just what you hope they'll be. Everything made to order. Be patient. It's worth the wait!!! Giant portions. Do NOT choose to skip the pie for dessert!! Great local spot, super casual, family style seating. You wont be disappointed!
google avatar

Janice L.

Yelp
Incredible fried chicken! Super crispy and flavorful. The spices are very unique. Every bite was delicious. The fries, Mac n cheese, and okra sides are great. My family ordered takeout over the phone! Would recommend !

Yelp
This place is amazing & delicious! It is a cozy atmosphere & super yummy! The service is always great, too!
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my Goshhh. This is the best chicken place I have ever. I am a big fan of Babe's chicken...this place is better. This is a hint of spice, which I love. About $12.50 a plate for a homemade meal. Definitely give it try.

Yelp
My buddy and I were watching football and we were both hungry. I was craving fried chicken. Gus's was open and they delivered to my address so that's what I ordered. I ordered a mixed 12 piece. It came with 4 pieces of bread as well. The chicken was hot, fresh and delicious It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside!! We definitely ate the entire bag of chicken lol! We were full and satisfied.. I'll definitely order from here again next time I get a craving for fried chicken

Dj G.

Yelp
The food is tasty, the service is spectacular, and the ambiance is that of an old restaurant. This is a great place to eat!

Texzilla Z.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Had not been here in a couple years. In college I'd eat at the original Gus's little shack in Mason TN and it was very different than this. Brought a biz client here from out of town. Got fried okra , which appeared frozen. The fried green tomatoes had a batter that was heavy and like a hard shell, I did not like. Chicken. What a letdown. They have toned down the spice. The tenders were flavorless and mushy. One came raw and was replaced. The chicken on the bone was also flavorless, but overdone so it was tough and dry. I hate eating off styrofoam plates. The beans are just insipid. The collard greens were very disappointing. Finely chopped like lawn clippings, very bitter, and no seasoning meat. Terrible and no amount of pepper sauce could fix them. Pecan pie was ok but instead of whole pecans was covered in basically pecan dust. Disappointing. Lots of good fried chicken in this town. This place isn't part of it. I guess kept going by mag street hipsters.
google avatar

Therral L.

Yelp
I'm writing my review as I'm sitting here eating this dry ass chicken. Gus what happened to you guys? Seriously this is unacceptable for world famous fried chicken. What I'm eating now is far from it. We paid 33 dollars for this garbage. Do you know how many chicken places we pass by just to come to your location? A lot a freaking lot!! I'm literally walking distance from a chicken place but I chose Gus because they were in my book one of the best. Not any more. This review isn't coming from just my most recent order. Over the past year I've come to your location a few times and both were poor. I'm tired of giving you guys chances. Your pieces are small your prices are ridiculous and your damn chicken is dry!! FIX IT!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hi everyone, I'm back for another review. I've been told by a friend that I must go give this establishment a try. I uploaded my receipt to give you an idea of the prices. Now let's get to the food. Great crisp on the chicken. I was asked if I wanted to substitute my sides from slaw and beans to something else. I said yes, and chose Mac and cheese with collard greens. Once at the restaurant I was charged an up-charge, which I wasn't aware of. I also ordered a coke and fried green tomatoes with ranch. I would recommend that you give this establishment a visit. Taste was nice but I won't return for $26.0 in the future as I wasn't wowed. But I might try something else. No complaints as I just picked up my food and didn't dine inside. Happy trails everyone and enjoy.
google avatar

Yelp
After 6yrs I found myself at Gus Chicken after attending a Yelp event nearby. I've come to the conclusion that this establishment sticks to their recipe. I respect that! The place has an old fashion cozy feel. I ordered the exact meal I ordered 6yrs ago and it tasted exactly the same. I'm still not a big fan of the chicken. You either like it, somewhat like it, or you don't. The fried green tomatoes are delicious! I will go back when I have a craving for them. I enjoyed my overall meal and the staff were amazing.

Jessica G.

Yelp
We love it at Gus's Chicken. Great food and the service was amazing. Joe did a great job. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
We had come up to the area to try a variety of places in this stretch of Magnolia! I gave who I was with a choice of two places to eat that we hadn't been to before and we went with Gus'. This place has the small town chicken stop vibe, as if it has stood the test of time as things grew around it. Though I am not sure how long they have been here before we discovered them. Staff was outstanding, if I remember correctly Joe was the one we had taking care of us and he did awesome! Between the two of us we got fried pickles, 2 piece bone in dark meat, 2 piece bone in white meat a slice of chocolate pie and a chicken strip plate. We enjoyed the fried pickles and liked that they had them in spear shape. For our sides the fries were really good with just the right amount of seasoning. The Mac n Cheese had a velveta taste which is ok, just not my favorite. For the chicken both of the bone in chicken options we got were outstanding. We liked the seasoning on those. The chicken strips didn't have the fatty issue a lot of fast food chicken strip places have which I appreciated. The chocolate pie we tried had a good crust, but with the various other dessert options near by we may stick to just meals here and go to other places for that end of things. For sure give them a chance if you are wanting chicken in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Joe K was the best waiter i've had in years. Including steak houses and 4-5 star restaurants . Very attentive and kind. Ask for him if you go!

Yelp
One of the best fried chicken places we keep coming back to!! Service was great! Our server was welcoming and so nice to our family. The location and ambiance were great.

Yelp
Visiting from California and needed to try some good chicken. It is so good! Fantastic Authentic flavor with a good crunch! Sides greens, slaw and potato salad Was screaming good. The pecan pie topped it all off! It All was just Dat Gum Good!! Yum yummy yum!

Yelp
Bruh. I'm impressed.. After church (Embassy City.. pull up!) I was really craving some fried chicken and with all the hole n the wall soul food spots closed, I came across this establishment on yelp. Well done. I love hard chicken and I love even more when I don't have to tell you to make my chicken hard!!!! Food is my love language and Gus loves me so. Time for a nap..
google avatar

Derrick S.

Yelp
This location food is cooked to order. Their specialty is chicken. The chicken tenders are huge. You have your choice of thighs, breast, or drumsticks. The sides are delicious. The ambiance is like a homestyle cafe. The service is always excellent. The food comes out fast. The reason I did not give this location a fivr star was due to the parking. There is no free nearby parking. It takes awhile to find a parking spot. Usually the location you will find a parking space will require some walking to the location.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Food came out fast for fried chicken (not in a bad way) coleslaw was decent , moist but not the most flavorful. Chicken was good, I loved that it didn't have too much breading. Good chicken over all. I do feel the chicken fried on the bone was a higher caliber. I was sat immediately and greeted quickly as well. Cute, simple decor.
google avatar

Elisa C.

Yelp
Always extremely good service and food! Every need is anticipated and delivered. I love the Coleslaw and greens, and of course, the chicken. The chocolate chess pie is so yummy. My only issue is that I freeze in there, and you can't escape the vents. We park a block away, which is not bad. We'll done, Gus's!

Leland H.

Yelp
Gus's has great fried chicken. Our waiter was fantastic and our food binge-worthy. There are lots of options for sides, and PIES for dessert.
google avatar

Tatiana A.

Yelp
Gosh, this is so freaking good. I'm from NC and the cole slaw and okra were home! The chicken was moist and fried perfectly. I've been back a few times and the service is nice and fast. Seat yourself and waiter will come to you. Very good and casual spot.
google avatar

Syd G.

Yelp
One of many more trips to this amazing iconic fried chicken Mecca! Their service is impeccable and love their hard crispy fried chicken. Just enough heat to give it flavor but doesn't overpower ya. I'll be back...again and again!
google avatar

Russell N.

Yelp
Lot of hype, I didn't find it to be better than any other place. For the price I won't be back because it didn't excite me. could get equally good chicken several other places for much less $. It's a cool hole in the wall type place and I did like the meal but I don't think I'd come back. Sever was friendly. I just couldn't see the reason for the price. And I'm happy to drop coin on a meal that blows my socks off.
google avatar

Von K.

Yelp
I'm a fried chicken snob, but if you mention Gus's World's Best Fried Chicken, just move out of my way! We stopped in for my birthday lunch and the manager and our waiter were beyond phenomenal! Our meal came out hot and ready and we were consistently checked on! The overall feeling inside was warm, homely and we definitely felt comfortable and right at home! We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
My first time eating at Gus's was in Memphis. My second time in Austin. Third time, here in Fort Worth. My man loves this chicken. I find it to be good but not the best I've ever had but I will say this location is the best I've had of the three. I really enjoyed it. My man also loves the sides- this is where I feel different. I think the sides are just ok but he loves them so that's what matters. As long as I can get French fries I'm good. What I will say is I won't fight to not eat here. I thought this location's chicken was really good. The service was great. I'll definitely be back and I'm sure he'll make sure we come back.

Seth P.

Yelp
The tenders were super crispy and juicy, some of the best I've had. Fries were hot and seasoned just right. Fried pickles were also crunchy and full of flavor. Everything came out fresh. I loved the hospitality and friendliest of everyone. The restaurant has a laid back atmosphere to it. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Loved, loved, loved! This place was amazing! The food was delicious. Their fried green tomatoes were to die for and their pies...glorious! The staff was so nice and friendly! The restaurant is very clean and welcoming, it feels like walking into a southern grandma's kitchen.

Yelp
Best fried chicken anywhere. They are consistent with what is served in Memphis however the location, although central, still in a trendy, tough to find parking area. Everything on the menu is delicious and I took a chocolate chess pie home. It was good but not as good as in Memphis, where it is warmer, softer, decadent? Chicken and sides are superb and the restaurant was full. The service was nice and they serve beer here.

Yelp
Great chicken with "knock my socks off" service! Old time ambiance and super clean. Can't believe it's a chain!

Yelp
Amazing fried chicken! This is definitely a spot I'd return to next time I'm in town. Tenders are juicy with a hint of spice, but just enough to keep you coming back for another bite. I love a good cole slaw and this totally hit the spot. Everything was crisp, crunchy and downright chef's kiss. Do yourself a favor and enjoy a meal here! Top notch customer service, as well!
