The Best Fried Chicken in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"New Orleans may not have needed another chain fried chicken place, but no one complained when a location of Tennessee-born Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken landed in the Warehouse District. Crowned the winner of the 2019 fried chicken festival, Gus’s is loved nationwide for good reason — the never-frozen chicken is marinated for 12 hours before being fried in peanut oil." - Beth D’Addono

It was busy after a Pokemon event at the convention center but we were able to get a table pretty quickly. My husband loves fried chicken and said this was indeed the best fried chicken he has had. Awesome flavor here for the chicken. I think the sides were alright, but not insanely good. Our server was very friendly and helpful!

Google
In the mood for chicken? This is the spot to go as it is easily one of the best fried chicken restaurants I have ever been to! The chicken is perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of kick, crisp, and juicy. The Mac n cheese and coleslaw were also very good as well as the fried green tomatoes. You can order a plate with a good selection of sides and a slice of bread or a la carte. I’ve been twice to the New Orleans location and was not disappointed.

Google
We have tried Gus's in Houston, Austin and now New Orleans. Let me tell you they did not disappoint! Food was amazing! I must say NOLA you may have Texas beat! Although everything tasted the exact same deliciousness you expect from Gus's I believe I could taste the pride and love just a bit more here! The chicken is always EXTREMELY juicy! The spice is on point! The sides are packed with flavor and the sweet tea hits! We came in around 2pm and we're followed by a large group in a bus. The employees didn't look frustrated at all, despite a group of 40 or more walking in. They put their heads down and got down!! Taking care of everyone. The open window is great! Love the atmosphere! Great job y'all! Much ❤️ from TX!

Google
We have fried green tomatoes which were excellent with a crispy, not soggy skin. We split the half chicken and subbed fries and Mac&cheese. The sides were unremarkable. The Mac is traditional southern style, so extra thick and cheesy. Chick was delightful. A bit of spicy in the coating. Not a lot of bread covering but still tasty. I would recommend as long as you set your expectations at local, low frills.

I came to New Orleans for a work convention — four long days filled with meetings, walking, and trying out a variety of local dishes. On our last day, with just a few hours to kill before our flight, we asked a local where they go for authentic, no-frills Louisiana food. Without skipping a beat, they said, “You’ve got to try Gus’s.” So grateful we listened. Even after a lavish steak dinner earlier in the week, Gus’s fried chicken was hands down the best meal I had in New Orleans. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy and flavorful on the inside — just the right kick of spice. I ordered the classic combo with mac and cheese and fried okra, and every bite was soul-satisfying. The cherry on top? Friendly, fast service that made us feel right at home. If you’re looking for real Southern comfort food in NOLA, skip the tourist traps and head straight to Gus’s. You won’t regret it.

Google
No clucking around - just good old fashioned Louisiana fried chicken. We tried a mixture of chicken but the thighs were the highlight, without a doubt the juiciest fried chicken I’ve ever sampled. A simple recipe perfected. The sides were all delicious, especially the slaw, BBQ beans and Mac N Cheese. Soul food, unlimited sodas and 40oz beers - what more could you want?

Google
Popped in for some dessert; it took 10 minutes to get two slices of pie to go. There were three patrons eating, a hostess, and three workers. I would have gone back for chicken the next day but I didn't feel the love. The coconut pie was delicious. I wish it would have been different.

Google
I was trying to find best fried chicken that wasn't too far from where I was staying before heading to the airport. I didn't want the chicken strip places along Canal (was staying at the Marriott).. and found a good number of reviews about Gus'. The reviews didn't lie as that chicken was SO good! Crisp, crunchy and slightly spicy exterior while incredibly moist and juicy inside. I upgraded to the mac and cheese and potato salad and they were both pretty basic but good. The chicken was the star of the plate. This isn't a high frills place (the prices are very reasonable for what you get). The place is pretty open with a high ceiling, clean, good service and I'm glad I saved room for a few bites of pecan pie. That was nicely gooey and not overly sweet. Next time I'm in New Orleans... I'll be back!

Yelp
I visited this local icon for some high-quality fried chicken dining and was not disappointed. The quality and flavors were top-notch, the staff were very friendly and the wait-time was quite small. Especially for a great lunch, I highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken is absolutely amazing! From the moment you walk in, you know you're in for something special. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor. Every bite is pure comfort food at its best. The sides are just as delicious--perfectly seasoned and a great complement to the chicken. I especially love their fried pickles and baked beans. The atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, and the staff is friendly and attentive, making the dining experience even better. If you're craving the best fried chicken around, Gus's is the place to go. It's definitely worth the hype and lives up to its reputation as a must-try spot!

Yelp
For the love of God... this place was delicious. Ah-maz-ing! No tap beer, but that's fine. Started with friend green tomatoes (no pic- ate too fast). Split a 3 piece plate with upgraded sides. And a sweet potato pie. Service was excellent! So kind and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely a must try in New Orleans, such a good place for fried chicken. The place is big and had a lot of space for seating! Parking is limited but street parking is available.

Yelp
4.5! Was visiting NOLA for a conference and stopped by. Truly the best fried chicken I've had. I got the 2 piece white meat plate with the a side of beans, slaw & Mac and cheese. Price was amazing for so much food. The chicken was seasoned perfectly, slaw was good, and the beans. Mac & cheese was meh. Wouldn't get it again honestly. I also came in a group of 3, and the food took upwards of 40 min to get. Definitely wasn't expecting that so was a bit bummed. But AJ was amazing about it and the sweetest!! So shoutout to him and his impeccable service. Def recommend though stopping by for the chicken, and be prepared that it could take some time to get!
google avatar

Kimberlyn Q.

Yelp
A great place to try classic Cajun Fried Chicken. The 3 piece dark was juicy and tasty, with the right kick. Added the hot sauce, and it tasted even better. Mac N Cheese was very tasty. This place was a good way to try the fried chicken and different southern sides. Service was very friendly and it felt like a cozy diner/cafeteria vibe. Would definitely come back if I need a fried chicken fix in NOLA!

Darrell W.

Yelp
The food was delicious!!! But the service was terrible. The service low-key forgot about me for an hour, and we're very rude and hostile to me.
google avatar

Deb K.

Yelp
I'd give five stars but service seemed slow considering the place was pretty empty. Once we ordered, the food came fast. Chicken was hot and spicy with very crispy skin. Beans were sweet and tasty. Greens had a nice kick. And sweet tea was just the way it should be!
google avatar

Kelvin E.

Yelp
Best friend chicken in New Orleans. Cooked to perfection with a spicy touch. It was incredible!
google avatar

Dina G.

Yelp
My daughter forgot her scarf at Gus's and we were not able to make it back before we left NOLA. Victoria and Jon made sure it was packed up and sent back once our UPS label arrived. Talk about going above and beyond. Thank you so much!
google avatar

Ariel K.

Yelp
Service was very Slow. Still confused on why and how. We placed our order. Food came out cold, dry, appeared old and cooked in old grease. They subbed our macaroni and cheese without offering a choice. The plates came with sides we didn't want nor eat. That was a waste of time. We left the trash of a plate on the table just as it came out. Untouched. I've never experienced such at Gus's. I frequent Austin location. I doubt that i'll visit the New Orleans location again. I didn't take a picture of food, it would embarrass the brand.
google avatar

Lois L.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We enjoyed it so much we returned 3 days later! My daughters loved the mac n cheese. Their homemade sweet potato pie was yummy. According to them, it's the best selling compared to pecan, coconut, or pumpkin pie. Of course, their chicken (both strips and fried chicken) were amazing. The strips were huge and eating just 1 (with sides) made us full. Portions are generous and affordable especially for a family of 4!

Yelp
How can I ever eat fried chicken again? This set the bar so high! Just the right amount of spicy- no spicy enough to make you uncomfortable, just spicy enough to wake up your taste buds! This place was perfect for bringing our kids as the vibe was relaxed and welcoming. Our server was friendly and answered all of our questions. Definitely recommend staying for dessert!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Probably the best fried chicken I've had in a long time. Ordered to go but food was still super fresh and delicious. Got the fried chicken with beans and coleslaw which were also good sides. Overall a nice experience, will try to go back when I'm New Orleans.
google avatar

Yelp
I first tried Gus's while in Austin so when I saw it was in New Orleans and not to far from the convention center I told my friend we had to go here for lunch one day! It did not disappoint! One of the best places for fried chicken! Service was stellar, environment was nice, food was delicious! I switched out the baked beans for okra and my tummy was happy. Fried green tomatoes were good, not the best I've had. Sweet potato pie is highly recommended!
google avatar

Cardin N.

Yelp
One of my favorite fried chickens ever. My wife loved it so much as well. Pretty low cost too. Service was good and the venue was plenty spacious.
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
Hear that I needed to try this place but, I was greatly disappointed. The service was very slow and they took 1 order about every 5 minutes. The workers did not seem to have a care in the world about speeding up the pace. I could have made my own fried chicken faster and it would have tasted just as mid. Mid quality and even worse service.
google avatar

Peter V.

Yelp
This is the best fried chicken I have ever had. Maybe there is better, but I've sought after good fried chicken a reasonable amount and this is my favorite by far. The service was amazing when we went, and the ambiance was very chill and relaxed. Good music and nice people everywhere.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Had to try the hype fried chicken while in the South. I came in the afternoon and it was dead quiet. A nice afternoon respite with some delicious fried chicken. I got the 2 piece dark with mac and cheese and potato salad. Great value for what I paid!
google avatar

Whisper W.

Yelp
FANTASTIC! Best fried chicken I've had in a very long time. Very juicy, crispy, and not greasy at all. I'm not a huge fan of coleslaw, but theirs was very good - crispy and fresh. I've had better collards at other places, so was disappointed in them. Their sweet tea was perfect - not overly sweet at all. There was one server and she was so busy, fast, and friendly. I was quite impressed with how she kept up with all the tables. I highly recommend going here to get your chicken fix.
google avatar

Von W.

Yelp
Definitely a tourist trap, but it wasn't bad. I got the 2-piece dark with two sides for $12. The size of the pieces were not commensurate with the cost. My leg could've come from a chick, it was that small. Given its location near the Convention Center, I shouldn't be surprised. That said, the crust/breading was tasty. The meat was moist, but it didn't taste like it was marinated throughout. I think all the flavor is in the crust. The chicken and fries were also lukewarm. The menu reads seasoned fries, and I immediately thought of Rally's. However, they were the typical frozen fries dusted with cajun seasoning. I asked them to replace the coleslaw, but they replaced the baked beans. The coleslaw surprised me. It provided a refreshing retreat from the spicier chicken. The spiciness isn't upfront, but more of a slow burn. Service was fine, and the ambience was casual.

Yelp
I'll cut it short - this is proper fried chicken. We came through mid-afternoon with no wait after a 4 hour tour at the WWII museum close by. It was maybe too much war for us so we needed some good soul food to lift our spirits up. We got the 2-chicken combo, one dark, one white. I've had my fair share of fried chicken all around the country and this is definitely one of the most authentic and best. There's very little breading on the chicken which I heartily appreciate and you can tell that their secret seasoning that has a little bit of Cajun kick. The chicken itself is juicy and tasty, excellent with a cold Budweiser. Beans and slaw is on point, each with their own signature that separates it from your usual chain-restaurant sides. tldr; authentic Louisiana fried chicken with their own NOLA signature's
google avatar

Theresa V.

Yelp
I have conflicting feelings about this place. The chicken is probably the best fried chicken you can ever have. There's no arguing that. The sides are all solid. From the fries to the coleslaw to the baked beans. However, the worst service I have ever experienced. I've never been somewhere worse. You walk in and literally nobody acknowledges you. You seat yourself and watch every server walk by you and act like you don't exist. 15 mins later they come by and take your order. The wait is ridiculous. We waited 50 mins for our plate to come out (party of 2) the restaurant was about 80% full. No sorry no nothing. The waiters look like they hate their life. It's a shame to see a restaurant that has such good food not care about their customers. It's a cool looking place inside. The vibe is cool. But I cannot get over the awful customer service.
google avatar

Megan A.

Yelp
Right amount of spice and heat with that perfect crunch! Short walk from the convention center, so a must find for those mixing a little work and play.
google avatar

Daisy E.

Yelp
Man. I was really excited to try this place because of the reviews! Unfortunately, this meal was quite lacking. The oil was clearly old. Our food also arrived cold. Double no. I will say the cole slaw was great, though. We had Mac and cheese, which was a bit above average. Beans tasted like ketchup, and fries were...fries. Nothing blew me out of the water here but I'm sure it would be decent if it were fresh. $55 for 3 wing meal, medium mac and cheese, and a 4 piece chicken meal delivered by DoorDash
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this place given the reviews (and the name!) but I left feeling a little disappointed. My coworker and I waited a little over an hour for our order to be prepared and handed to us. Given the wait, I was expecting the world's best chicken. The chicken was good: it was nice and hot, and well-seasoned. The fries were a little salty, but that seems like a mistake that can happen at any fast-paced, crowded establishment. If I were to come back, I'd want to come by when there's not an event going on in the downtown area.
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
The food here is great. I had fried chicken with bake beans and Cole slaw. The ambience was nice. The service was very friendly. Definitely the best fried chicken!
google avatar

Kenneth L.

Yelp
I appreciate the way Gus's intends to have your fried chicken - in between a slice of white bread. However I can't say it's the best. Definitely come try their fried chicken as it's pretty famous for a reason! I would skip the tenders next time though as it was a bit dry and nowhere as good as their bone in options. The mac and beans options are also the best sides you can get here!
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
I remember this place from Maryland, so I had to try it. I ordered a 3 piece meal and some fried okra. My friend got the chicken sandwich special which was nothing to write home about. The fried okra were mediocre. The chicken was good as I remembered from my prior visit. The only thing that in New Orleans the chicken has done extra spice to it. Definitely a spicier batter than they sell in Maryland. Not complaining, just an observation. Overall, this chain didn't disappoint and I was a happy camper.
google avatar

Becca D.

Yelp
The chicken here is delicious, unique, special. The batter has amazing flavor and they get it to a perfect crunch. Chicken is juicy and just perfect! Love their sides as well. Absolutely will visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
Trying Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken for the first time in Louisiana, we found it to be a nice place to get a quick bite. We sampled both white and dark meat, accompanied by lemonade, mac and cheese, fried okra, and coleslaw--all satisfying choices. The service was efficient, allowing us to enjoy our meal without any delays. However my chicken was cold and my husband's was nice and hot. I ended up eating his haha. The seasoning on the chicken was really well balanced. The ambiance was just a regular diner. It's all I wanted it to be, it's fried chicken! Overall, a decent dining experience worth trying if you're in the area.

Christina R.

Yelp
Our family visited New Orleans and made our first trip to Gus' - each of us left stating that the was the best fried chicken we had ever eaten - DELICIOUS! Sides were amazing and our only challenge was we could not decide which was best between fried okra or mac & cheese. Staff was very friendly and we will now make this a must stop for the next time we are in town.
google avatar

Typhanie B.

Yelp
I see why Gus' is world famous. Their food is amazing. The chicken is delicious and extra crispy, yet juicy on the inside. I've been wanting some macaroni and cheese, they delivered. It was cheesy and creamy, loved it. I also had the potato salad, it exceeded my expectations, it was chunky and seasoned great with a hint of sweetness to it... tastes like someone's grandma's recipe from the 60's. The service was great, everyone was helping each other run the food, package the food, everything was sent out from the kitchen fresh and hot off the line. Nice chill ambiance, dining room full of happy folks enjoying Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken.
google avatar

Cade H.

Yelp
What do they do to that chicken?! I don't think I'll ever be able to eat fried chicken anywhere else! The skin was the perfect level of spice and crispiness that locked in the juices even in the white meat. All the side were delicious, but the greens were my favorite. Ended it all with a sweet and savory sweet potato pie. We sat down and were greeted with a smile and swift service. I love the laid back almost picnic style atmosphere. Only problem was no wheelbarrow to haul me out after.
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
Referred here by hotel staff. Did not disappoint. Ordered the 8 piece white, greens and mac and cheese. All the food was very good and plentiful. Would definitely go there again. Now, for the chicken, seriously, how can the chicken be so crunchy, yet so moist? Great flavor.

Miki L.

Yelp
Best tasting chicken around. Everyone here is nice, atmosphere is great. The restaurant is very clean. Do yourself a favor and come and taste this chicken.
google avatar

Stella A.

Yelp
Food One of the food highlights for us in New Orleans! The humble fried chicken was cooked nicely (tender and juicy, crispy on the outside). We'll be back for the chicken definitely. Sides were okay but nothing special. Service When we came they were pretty busy, most of the tables were filled, so no one attended our table. We were confused at first whether we had to go to the counter for ordering or they would come to us since no one came to our table for quite some time. It would be the latter though, just have to be very patient, it's a famous chicken :). Card was accepted.
google avatar

Shelly M.

Yelp
Great fried, crispy chicken, creamy Mac and decent slaw. Chess pie was the highlight of the meal. I appreciated one of the employees asking me if I was a to-go order, because when I said yes, he pulled me up to another line. Docked a star, because even when I was pulled up to the to go line, it still took soo long and other patrons kept trying to get in front of me because there was some confusion as to where's the line was, because we had to keep shifting around to let servers by
google avatar

Ashwin N.

Yelp
This was the first meal I had when landing in New Orleans, and it was about what I had expected. I went with a big group and split a bunch of appetizers but the chicken I got was the thigh and the breast. The thigh tasted amazing- the breast left a little to be desired. The appetizers were pretty good. The greens and Mac n Cheese were my favorites, but the Okra wasn't bad either. I think it's a nice spot, but nothing super special. The service was great

Rj M.

Yelp
I'm from South Florida / Broward County and I must say this chicken was AF..... Spicy crispy crunchy and picked with favor. Definitely a Big back moment I got an 8pc mixed & now I'm down to only two pieces left lol. i'm going back tomorrow for more. The service was fast & friendly.
google avatar

Patricia M.

Yelp
The chicken smelled amazing and looked really good as everyone that came in after us (there were 3 tables of 4 when we arrived and 2 people at the bar) were served as we waited for our order, to include a table of 8. We had trouble inconspicuously "catching" the wait staff as they rushed by us due to the rush that came after us, and after about 45-50 min, we were able to connect and ask about our order. We were told "the chicken takes a bit to get ready." After a few more minutes we were informed our ticked had been "cashed out." We chose to pay for our drinks (they were not going to be comped) and find a place we would be able to get food served in a timely manner. I had heard such raving reviews of this place. It was truly sad to have this experience. The staff were really nice and the place seemed fun. Hopefully your experience is better than ours.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
There's some very good fried chicken in NOLA, but Gus's has been a great addition. I haven't been to the original in Memphis for probably 10-15 years but honestly this is one of the few franchises where I'd say the chicken reminds me exactly of the original. I'm a big fan of the potato salad and mac & cheese as sides, and the combo meals can be a great value especially the 3 Piece White combo which is a ton of food and feeds 2 people in my household. It was cool as a decades-old family run place in the "South of Beale" area of Memphis but it's still really good as a franchised chain and can hold its own against the best in New Orleans which isn't easy. A great choice if you like crispy fried chicken cooked right with a nice amount of spice.
google avatar

Nostril M.

Yelp
OK, the chicken was good but they gave me the wrong sides and the wrong chicken order. I asked for thighs and wings and got thighs and drumsticks so hard to complain. But I got double mac n cheese instead of beans and slaw. To go order so I only checked when I was home and wasn't going to go back, Also gave me pecan pie instead of chocolate chess. They got the order received right as I have the receipt. Someone not paying attention. Food good.
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
The crispiest fried chicken you will ever have. There are way too many chicken places in New Orleans but this is by far the best. A bit of a walk from Bourbon Street but it is worth it. We tried a few of the sides but the Mac and cheese and beans were our favorites.
google avatar

Kenneth G.

Yelp
I got recommended this place from a friend as an alternative to Willie Mae's since they're still shut down (hopefully reopening soon) while I was in town visiting. They compared it to them so figured it was definitely worth checking out. It definitely isn't Willie's, that's for sure. The inside feels pretty sterile and uninviting. It felt like a pretty generic chain restaurant when I first walked in. There was no signage on where to sit or where to order, so I walked up to the counter and stood there for quite a while until I was asked if I was picking up a to go order. I said no and that I wanted to dine in and then there was just an awkward pause. The guy behind the counter told me I could just sit anywhere so I took a seat at the counter/bar top. I sat there for easily a good 10-15 minutes while that same guy sat on his phone. I finally got his attention and he seemed annoyed that I was trying to order. I will say the food did come out fairly quickly for how relatively busy they were on a Saturday afternoon. The food itself though was definitely nothing to write home about. The beans were exceptional, but everything else was pretty lackluster. The chicken was fired really well but lacked any sort of seasoning or taste otherwise. The Mac and cheese was pretty middle of the road. The pie was very rich so that's a plus and I think I got hooked up with a bonus slice which was nice. All in all, it just felt like I was overpaying for KFC quality food. I will say the same guy behind the counter did become more personable after I ordered and the food came out. From then on he was attentive and cool to talk to, and honestly that and the bonus pie are the only reasons I'd give them 3 stars instead of 2. Likely won't go back again next time I'm in town a few weeks from now.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
this is some of the best chicken I've ever had, they were out of thighs, which is my favorite... But that being said what they had was so good I didn't end up missing thighs. The service was as good or better than the chicken, and a large selection of side items all of which were very yummy. I don't have one negative thing to say, I wish we had a Gus's chicken in Oregon!
google avatar

Jessie T.

Yelp
Food: The chicken is really crispy, and juicy inside. Surprisingly, it's a little bit spicy (from the coating), which I don't mind. It's not over salted, which is another good point. I enjoyed the Cole slaw and baked beans, just classic in a good way. Price: It's good price for the portion. Atmosphere and service: Indoor seating area, about 20 tables? It's loud inside if the room is fully filled up. Good for casual meal. The waitress is nice and efficient, we got our food pretty quick (15 mins after ordering). Overall, I enjoyed the meal, recommend this place if u r in the area and want to try NOLA fried chicken.

Yelp
Rating: 1/2 (3.5 stars) I recently visited Gus's World Famous Hot & Spicy Chicken in New Orleans, LA, and being a fried chicken enthusiast, I had high hopes. If I could indulge in fried chicken, watermelon, and Texas toast every day without health concerns, I absolutely would. Unfortunately, my visit to Gus's left me with mixed feelings. The ambiance and service were quite pleasant; the staff was friendly and attentive. However, the highlight of any visit to a fried chicken joint should be the chicken itself. While Gus's chicken was good, it didn't quite live up to the "world famous" reputation. The hot and spicy flavor was decent but lacked the fiery kick I was hoping for. The chicken was crispy on the outside, but I felt it could have been juicier on the inside. It didn't leave me craving for more, which is what I expect from top-notch fried chicken. In the end, Gus's hot & spicy fried chicken was just okay. It didn't quite hit the mark for me, especially when paired with my imaginary watermelon and Texas toast. It's worth a try if you're in the area and craving fried chicken, but I'm not sure if it lives up to the world-famous status

Yelp
Delicious food. The chicken has just the right amount of spice and the sides pair well with the chicken. Reasonable pricing, fabulous customer service.Great ambience.
