I got the most beautiful concha bouquet from my parents today for my birthday. I told them I have always wanted one and this one is more beautiful than I could have asked. I love it so much. Couldn’t help but nibble on it and the conchas were delicious. There were adorable flower cookies in it as well and they were delicious too. I also love what I call “pink cake” (cortadillo/pastel de niños) and Gussie’s made it special for me. It’s so yummy. The cake is moist and fluffy. I highly recommend this bakery! Thanks for making my birthday so special. ❤️

I ordered cheese jalapeño tamales and they gave me chicken, I also order 2 dozen of sweet tamales and the masa was not cooked properly more like Playdoh. I called the store to let them know, and Christina said just bring the receipt for a refund. I went back three days later for my refund and Christina acted like she had no knowledge about it since it was a large order. She brings out from the creepy see through mirror an older white racist owner and refuses a refund. Instead of apologizing for the mistake and wasting my time and gas going all the way over there. Won’t be spending my money on this establishment specially with racist owners.

This evening, I stopped to get a bite to eat at Gussie's. The pork & sweet tamales were good, but I noticed they don't have prices for their sweet bread and 🤔 why. I brought a 🍍 Empanada which costs $1.65 each and a Pan de Huevo also $1.65 - YIKES 😳.

Google
The food is great, although the customer service is awful especially to the elderly. They should hire people with good customer service, and a manager with better managing. Not to mention the prices have sky rocketed especially for being in a lower income community. A great business is not solely on good quality food but also it atmosphere and customer service.

Google
I used to be a regular customer. But until recently, they don't have everything ready anymore. I can't spend my money if nothing is ready to buy. So I bought a menudo without bread because it wasn't ready. I didn't get donuts because they weren't ready. So then I get to work, and there's a piece of wrapper in my menudo! Needless to say, I won't be going back anymore after all these years. Everything should be ready at opening. It doesn't matter how good the food is, if it's not ready.

Passing thru El Paso, a friend recommended a must stop at this spot for tamales to go. Ordered a mixed dozen of green chili chicken and red pork. So amazing, delicious tamales!!!

Google
Best tamales ever. The staff is super friendly and can answer all your questions. I got the pork tamale and the green chili cheese tamale. They are big, two will definitely fill you up. I was so full I brought my chocolate sweet bread home. That was fantastic and recommended to me by the woman behind the counter. The food is very affordable so make sure you leave a good tip!!

Google
I went in to get some empanadas. Witnessed a customer getting 'scolded' by a punk. What's going on? I stepped in and the punk told me to mind my own business. The customer was very upset. Seemed to have found hair in tamales. Apparently only wanted to give her money for tamale that had hair. Lady said she didn't want the order anymore. Someone came out from the back and took bag of tamales and threw them into trash can. Very rude! I did not buy anything after witnessing that show.

Yelp
Great experience and great recco from Elite Yelpie, Marie G! We dropped by for a quick tamale run after Mass today. They had a variety of flavors, but only sold them at one flavor a dozen. Liz went in, and it wasn't too busy considering the season. She had a choice of pork and red chile, cheese and rajas, chicken chile verde, and may another... The rules for the season are: First come, first serve. One flavor, one dozen. No pre-ordering. No room or tables to dine in. (plan to grab and go) They didn't have menudo on hand. It's pretty much baked goods and tamales, tamales, tamales. Parking could be difficult, but it's manageable. They have a tiny lot in the front, and plenty of street parking. The tamales were pretty good. Next time we will have a plan!

Yelp
Uuuggghhhh this is gonna be hard to write a review but need to let my fellow El Pasoans know the truth. Ok so I came here with my grandma because she saw on the news that Gussies was one of the TOP #1 places for tamales. Soooo she made me drive all the way across town (24min) to get tamales. It was 3 days before Christmas so you can only imagine the amount of people waiting for tamales. We get here and the line wasn't so bad BUT of course they didn't have the green chile tamales anymore just red. But then apparently while we waited one of the guys in the back said it was the opposite. No red just green so there basically wasn't any communication with the person taking orders it was understandable because it was chaos inside and people waiting for tamales. Ok so my grandma and I took our tamales home to try out and AYE DIOS MIO they were dry. Yup the masa was dry. We were super disappointed and couldn't understand how this was considered one of the best places in El Paso for tamales. Not to mention THEY ARE EXPENSIVE. I would say one place to get some bomb @ss tamales but I'll just write that in another review. I'll probably be back again but not for tamales just for some pan dulce. Enjoy my pics :)

Yelp
My wife has been missing her tamales and this place brought her memories back from growing up here. They were incredible, we got the red Pork, green cheese and green chicken, plus the sweet raisin. I got an additional empenada lemon pastry and absolutely delicious. The service was excellent, very helpful and made you feel like you were family. They even separate the tamales with color coded twisties to distinguish the different orders. It seems like a small place but there are so many bakery options that it feels huge. I'm glad we were able to find this place and will come back next visit.

Yelp
I ordered two guava empanadas, ham torta combo, and bean burrito. I met the young chef/Baker and he wanted to make sure everything was spot on! He did a great job. The Lady running the front end was very helpful. The display cases were filled with everything you can think of! Nicely decorated, clean and organized! I want to try their tamales next!

Yelp
For 50 years, Gussie's Tamales & Bakery has served the El Paso community. Gussie's is located on the corner of Piedras St and Richmond Avenue. Part of Gussies Tamales and Bakery's greatness is their work hours; they are open Monday to Friday, 6 am to 9 pm. So, if you want to stop by and get tamales or pan dulce for everyone in your office, you may arrive as early as 6 am, and they have you covered with their delicious fresh product. Then, if you are on your way to an event or potluck and need to bring something, you may stop before the event, and again, Gussies got you covered with warm tamales, champurrado, menudo, baked goods, and cakes. Gussie's staff never freeze any of their products. Inside, they have a couple of tables and chairs if you like eating in, but most people take their favs to go. My favorite is any of their pan dulce.

Yelp
Significantly underpriced and bursting with selection, Gussie's is popular. The trouble is knowing when to stop buying: you can easily destroy your diet here for not a lot of money. Tamales are very good and the baked goods vary in that happy range between good and superb. Brush up on your español, although someone there will be bound to be able to assist those limited to ingles.

Vanessa L.

Yelp
So far, my favorite Tamales in the city. Worth the price, worth the weight. The green chili cheese are my absolute favorite
google avatar

Gracie A.

Yelp
Green chile cheese tamales are the best! Spicy but not overly spicy. Good amount of cheese. Their empanadas are the best I have tasted. Their crust is perfect. Crisp without crumbling! My favorite is the pumpkin empanada. I also recommend their bolillos and telera bread.

Yelp
Gussie's is amazing. Tamales are good and pastries are amazing. Good prices and service is good too. Love that all the pastries are on display and labeled, very nice place.

Yelp
This place is my favorite to go to for Tamales. I've had multiple Tamales throughout El Paso, New Mexico, and my hometown, Washington, but nothing defeats Gussie! The Tamales here are definitely the best and everytime I would go to El Paso, I would at least try and order a bunch so I can take some back home for my family and friends in Washington. The baked pastries though are lacking on the other hand and is overpriced. However, it is a convenient location to get your tamales and pastries at the same time. They have a public parking lot also so parking is not a problem

Tanya W.

Yelp
Is Gussie's under new ownership? Time to find a new tamale place. This place is an unorganized mess and it's only December 16th! First, I'm told I have to wait 30 minutes until 2pm to order. Then, as I'm waiting, they charge a few people for their order, then finally offer to take my order. Definitely not coming back.

Yelp
I have been so excited to try Gussie's as I have read people rave about their tamales. I was in the area during lunchtime and stopped by. Gussie's was pretty busy, but still took the time to greet those coming in. The pricing and variety for bakery items here is very good. They have wonderful deals on smaller cookies and cakes as well. The Hatch green chili cheese tamales were amazing. They were probably the best ones I have had since moving to El Paso. If you have not tried their tamales make sure you do!

Beatriz A.

Yelp
Gentleman Rudy working behind the counter was extremely rude. After I waited in line. I asked if I could get a sweet bread he told me to hurry up because I was cutting the line. They I grabbed my sweet bread. He told me you know what never mind get out and kept my debit card and when I asked for it back he threw it to the side. Extremely rude! Very bad service! In the beginning he couldn't make his mind up as to if they had tamales or not

Yelp
We recently visited El Paso from California. I lived in El Paso as a child and never forgot about Gussie's! We loved the tamales and pan dulce! We had green chicken tamales and red pork tamales. I called before making the drive from our hotel and verified that they still had the tamales I wanted. The customer service was great and the pan dulce was perfection! We had elotes, conchas, orejas, empanadas and lots of cookies. A quick tip.. make sure you read the labels for the elotes as some of them have a different filling than the traditional yellow one. I will definitely be back next time I'm in Chuco town.

Yelp
My brother was in town and wanted tamales so I went with him to Gussies for the first time since the last lousy service and pastries I bought there a few years ago. Well the same rude staff person was there - her name is Paola. What luck to get her again. I had three large pastries and 9 cookies including the sugar ones that get all over everything. A lady at the other register was being helped by another staff member who smiled and seemed so nice compared to Paola who acted like she could care less that I was buying something there. The other staff member put the lady's sweets in a box. Well Paola did the same thing as a few years ago, she began to put my sweets in bags. I said no I want a box. So what does she do? Huffs and puffs to the kitchen to retrieve a box and then charges me $.75 for it! The sweets included two apples fritters and a huge empanada that was falling apart as she picked it up so ungently and cookies, which would have been smashed in bags. So this time I told my brother I'll never go again, even if he wants to, as Paola has the worst attitude and overcharged me by charging for a box which should come with all the sweets I bought. And trust me, the tamales aren't worth $20 a dozen. Red lacked any flavor and the green chile weren't done cooking as they fell apart when we tried to eat them. Homemade taste 100% better!

Yelp
Great BIG Tamales!! These are a lot bigger than I've ever seen. And the best part if the masa to filling ratio; it's very well balanced!! The normal tamale is wrapped in 1 corn husk, but Gussie's does theirs using 3-4 corn husks! When I received my order of 1/2 dz of green chile/chicken & 1/2 dz of cheese/chicken, I swore they had given me too many based on the weight of the bag; but nope, there was 1 dozen total in there! They were just a Lot Bigger than I was used to. Big and soooo Damn GOOD!! I literally called home to talk about it. Gussie's is also a bakery, but I don't have any of their pastries. I'll definitely get some on my next trip back. Good looking selection from what I saw. This place is easily 5-stars!!

Walter D.

Yelp
A variety of bake goods, tamales and service was good. I have been there on several occasions and so far everything has been consistent.

Yelp
Your tamales used to be a little bit bigger and a lot softer. Sorry but I can't be a customer anymore.

Yelp
Girlfriend and I were craving some tamales as we didn't have many over the holidays since we were traveling so much so we decided to try different tamales around EP and our first stop being Gussies! When we walked in, Carmen greeted us and asked if she could help in any way! I asked her about some pastries my parents wanted and then we ordered our tamales with her! We ordered a dozen pork tamales and a dozen chicken tamales! When we got home, we ate some and boy were they delicious! My girlfriend eats the pork ones and she said they were just the right amount of spicy and they had a lot of flavor. I had the chicken ones and boy were they good! They were also the perfect amount of spicy and just so good! We will definitely be coming back! Thanks Carmen! Side Note: I also wanted to add...these tamales are STUFFED. Many places go skimpy on the filling but these are BIG BOYS!

Yelp
Some of the reviews for this place state the rudeness from some of the employees. I came here because of how close it is to my house. They have a huge selection of baked goods and the donuts o had were fresh! The lady behind the counter is so nice. Def love this place.

Yelp
Yummy tamales omg broke the mouth as my Hawaiian friend would say, very friendly people Cookies are the best Being a chef myself I would love to be able too see them work , but the products are talking all by themselves. Again yummy .

Yelp
I don't understand the draw to Gussies... the quality has suffered for YEARS and people continue to go back for what amounts to 80% soggy masa. El Paso if you want QUALITY AND AWESOME SERVICE just drive 3 miles south to el segundo barrio and purchase from Bowie bakery..... they are so courteous and the tamales are mikes better than Gussie.

Cheryl L.

Yelp
Gussie's Bakery makes THE best doughnuts, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion. The price is pretty good though compared to grocery store prices and the quality is definitely better. It may be that my opinion is biased though since Gussie's is within walking distance but I don't think so.

Yelp
After a really good meal from up the road, we stopped by here to grab some pastries for our road trip. We savored the flavor and enjoyed the price and quality. YOU MUST VISIT and you will not be disappointed. Really glad it was in our visible area, no regrets!

Yelp
Packed on the day before Christmas Eve, for a damn good reason: tamales. This place makes the greatest tamales in the area, bar none. I showed up to a line (not too long) - and found out that they were sold out. Stayed to buy some other pastries when the owner came out and announced that they would be making more tamales, and would make sure that ever in line would receive tamales if ordered. Now that, quite frankly, is a brilliant business owner. He knows how to please his customers. I ordered ten dozen: 5 red (pork), 3 green (chicken) and 2 cheese. No one is leaving hungry this year! Thank you, Gussies. You not only has the best tamales, but you know exactly how to run a business. Would I recommend? Absolutely. Would I go back? Without a doubt.

Nala F.

Yelp
We have gone to Gussies for many years and have enjoyed many of their authentic and tasty treats which is the only reason why they are getting a three. We recently went by to buy tamales for Thanksgiving and were surprised at the cost. $24.99 for a dozen tamales when the last time we ordered it was about $19.99 (last month). When passively remarking on the price and how everything was more expensive, the server started going on about Trump and how he will lower prices in a loud manner. She kept talking about 'you people' in a negative fashion since we had a mask on for personal health reasons, gesturing to her face to point out our masks as a reason for her admonishing words. We politely left without making a fuss, but we won't be going again anytime soon. Personally we do not feel like simply ordering tamales should garner a conversation about politics, especially in such a rude and abrupt way. We have loved this place for many years, but due to the customer service and prices, I doubt we will be coming back when there are more polite and less expensive places in town.

Yelp
Bakery smelled awesome. So many delectable choices of cookies, cakes, pastries and other Mexican dishes available. Bilingual host at register. I ordered Chicken w/ green chile Tamale. Being a native Louisianan, our tamales are smaller w/ less masa. The masa is main ingredient w/ seasoned doughy consistency making the tamale appear HUGE. Cut masa away and a subtle flavorful chicken/green chile is hidden under the dough. I saw, I tried, I tasted..These are MASA tamales w/ slither of chicken/green chile. Buy one or two tamales for a touristy taste experience. I unfortunately bought a 1/2 dozen.

Yelp
The most delicious tamales ever! Whenever I have this layover. Im there! And always grabbing extra for my friends here in NYC

Armando Z.

Yelp
Not very friendly the old lady at the register snapped at me when I asked her about the tamales after I had bought some sweet bread that wasn't that good tasted old maybe because it was late about ready to close anyway she said that they had no tamales and she said not until tomorrow and I asked what time thats when she snapped at me and said i told you tomorrow I won't go back and I don't recommend this place

Michele S.

Yelp
I love this place . We came from Tularosa NM on a Sunday. This was the only place selling tamales till 9 pm . They have four different tamales red chili pork, green chili and chicken, green chili and cheese, and Dulce (sweet tamales) . We got both types of green so delicious . We will be back very satisfied. Adorable bakery with so many pastries if you haven't tried this place you are missing out. So glad we happened on it today awesome staff too super kind .

Yelp
Great bakery. Good price. Wide selection + donuts. Definitely a place to stop in El Paso.

Yelp
We had better tamales, we didn't try the pork so can't speak for those, but the chicken and green chili and green chili and cheese were a little too spicy for me with all the seeds in there. Some of the tamales were mushy and falling apart.

Jorge F.

Yelp
Went for tamales at a chaotic time and staff did a great job. They kept everyone calm and were able to get orders out quickly when ready. The place was clean and smelled delicious. I only got red but they were great with many compliments
google avatar

Yelp
Heard the hype so I was in the area today and stopped by to try some tamales. A lady came out and announced they ran out of tamales rojos. It was early and only a few customers not sure how they ran out so quick especially if that's what they specialize in? A lady said she called in and they told her they did have them. She drove all the way from the Westside. The employees there weren't too concerned. We bought some menudo. Not good. It has a strong too strong onion taste. When we got home we opened the bag and there was no bolillos and no limes. The only reason for the 2 stars is we bought some sweet bread and that was decent. These places get hyped up and people drive for miles to try it only to get bad service and bad food. Good thing I was in the area and didn't waste my time and gas money. Definitely do not recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Having been raised in El Paso, it's tradition to get fresh tamales for Christmas and New Years. A dozen tamales will run about $16+, and you can choose between red pork, green chicken or green cheese. TIP: During holidays and Christmas time, there will be a looooong line inside that wraps around outside and along the parking lot.

Yelp
OMG delish! Gussie's is an El Paso staple and has been for quite some time now. If you're in El Paso for whatever reason, I'd recommend you stopping here at least once. I was in the neighborhood running an errand recently so I came by. As many years as I've lived in El Paso (close to 30), I hadn't tried their green tamales so...that's what I wanted and what I came for. I tried the ones with chicken and the ones with cheese. Both were really good! I tried their red pork ones a while back but I wasn't a fan. I thought they had too much masa and they were really greasy. That was some years back, though. I'm willing to try them again sometime. Like I said previously, both of the green ones are delicious. Gussie's also offers francesitos (French bread rolls) and lots of pan dulce (sweet bread) options. They also have cakes like tres leches (three milks cake) and flan. I love tres leches cake but I wasn't really in the mood for some. I don't like flan, not even a little bit. I want to like it but I never do, unfortunately. I don't like the taste or texture of it. The slimy feel in my mouth is gross imo. I also picked up some donuts, cookies, a cupcake and a few other pieces of Mexican bread. Way to stay on a diet, huh? So far I've only had half of a cookie with mini M&M's and a chocolate donut. I'm sure I'll have some more later! Yeah...I know I'll be coming back sometime! The question is when? I don't know yet but soon! I hope you get to try some tamales and/or pan dulce from here soon! :) Great customer service too!

Yelp
Such good tamales and baked goods. We got the cheese tamale and a bunch of different cookies. Everything was fresh and we even took some on a flight to Chicago. Would highly recommend!!!

Bj C.

Yelp
I've bought tamales from Gussie's for over 30 years. They are consistently delicious and the service is friendly and accommodating. I no longer live in El Paso, but my son will be visiting in a few days and I plan to introduce Pittsburgh to some of the best tamales ever!
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Didn't take a picture, but tried many of the items. My boyfriend and I spent over $40 there grabbing some of this and that. He liked their concha the best. I liked something that was like a chocolate chip cookie with choppen pecans. Also tried each of their tamales. Each one was very full of the filling (could have used a little more sauce for flavor in the chicken and pork, but that's just preference). My favorite was the cheese! Tasted like cheese grits with green chilis. YUM! And the dulce was good too, like rice pudding. Personally, I thought a lot of the items had a similar flavor, but way better than those you get at the grocery store. There wasn't a line at all, staff was nice, place was very clean, and items tasted fresh.

Yelp
Staying nearby I found this bakery- I called ahead and ordered a cake for my sons birthday. Carmen took my order and was very nice. When I arrived to pick up I was in awe of all the delicious Mexican pastries. I also purchased 1 dozen pork/red tamales and 3 green chile & cheese tamales plus bought sodas there. The tamales were freshly steamed and so delicious! The cake was moist and just right. This is a wonderful place with delicious temptations! Great customer service. I will definitely return when I'm in El Paso visiting.
google avatar

Mike N.

Yelp
One of my coworkers brought a dozen of tamales from the Gussie's to our office holiday potluck recently. They were simply excellent! What I liked most was the ratio between corn masa and spicy pork. It was just right unlike some others I had with way too much masa and not enough meat. The spiciness of meat was also very good for me since it had adequate heat, but not too hot for my taste. I heard that this bakery also offers excellent baked goods. I need to try some of their bakery items as well as some green chile chicken and sweet tamales with raisins and anise. I'm looking forward to try some more stuff from this bakery and tamales shop.

Yelp
There is just something about down home old style food. I mean the way they used to make them in the old classic ways. Gussie's bakery is great for picking up some great pastries for breakfast. A brilliantly made cup of coffee and a Gussie's delectable tasty Mexican treat is positively a combination that goes a really long way here in El Paso. I'll be back again, thank guys.

Yelp
Excellent pan Dulce! Super yummy green Chile and cheese tamales. Big tamales w big taste no holding back w the fillings. The chicken were good maybe a Lil more salsa ... other than that we were very glad our VRBO recommended Gussies! Busy place w covid guidelines enforced

Gl P.

Yelp
Bought tamales on July 25, 2023, they were super delicious, large and had plenty of meat and masa for red and plenty of cheese and masa for green . Bought tamales again on August 11, 2023 and was very disappointed. They were small hardly any masa and very very little cheese on green rajas and the red hardly any masa. I want the person that made the tamales on July 25th back.

Joseph D.

Yelp
My family has been a loyal customer at Gussie's for decades. Their quality of sweet bread has been consistently great. Recently something changed because we have gone the last 2 times (June and July 2023) and the sweet bread was stale. We are heartbroken that this has occurred. Be cautious.

Yelp
This place is close to my work location so it is always a request for office brunch celebrations. I pre order the tamales and pick them up around 7:00 AM...it takes all my willpower not to dig into them right then and there! They are so fresh first thing in the morning making them absolutely delicious. The green chili chicken and the chili and cheese have a nick kick to them- lots of flavor with a little bit of heat. The pork tamales are mild but sooo good and filled with meat. They have a sweet tamale that has a great flavor if you are wanting something different in the sweets department. While you wait for your order to get freshly packaged and come out to you, you find yourself surrounded by counters of baked goodies. The cookies are absolutely delicious! There are all kinds of empanadas- my favorite is pineapple. A good looking guy that I meet there one morning bought me one; he said I just had to try it. There are coffee rolls and all kinds of amazing looking pastries. You can dine in if you wish; they have several tables to sit at, and they also have coffee. If you have not been here yet, you are missing out!

Yelp
They have delicious pastries and tamales! Parking is a bit awkward, but worth it. Always dreaming about their cookies I can dip in my coffee
