Some times more is more. GW’s is the definition of Texas BBQ - customer service, plating, taste, restaurant management. BBQ concierge Mr. Dave, and owner, Mr. George Watts, made me feel like a queen. Every season has different sides. And a beautiful outdoor area to enjoy each season. I fell in love with the Gouda jalapeño sausage. I rarely ever get a dessert and instantly made an exception for this cookie. I love how organized and clean all workers kept every area. It’s every little thing that led to an unforgettable experience.

I mean this sincerely when I say I wish I could give more stars. Not only was the food and service second to none, I got the opportunity to meet the owner George. He is truly the master of his craft. He took the time to tour me through the operation and to meet some of his staff. The pride he has in them and his product is equally matched in each individual boasting about the product, preparation, and presentation. This is an extraordinary experience with amazing people and the best bbq I’ve ever had! Try the chicken fried brisket, you will not be disappointed.

1015 and 15th in-line. By 1050 it was 50 deep and stayed that way. The lean brisket alone is better than Goldees, Burnt bean, and way better than Leroy and Lewis. I wouldn’t be surprised if they become #1 in four years. Worth the travel. If you are traveling down 281 watch your speed as star troopers are ready to give tickets.

This is the best BBQ place I've ever gone to. The brisket was on point. It was smoked to perfection. We got the Texas bucket which had a little bit of everything and it was all amazing. Pork belly, ribs, turkey, brisket, and sausage. All the sides were very good as well. The corn bread is so moist and sweet. It just melts in your mouth. I'm usually disappointed with BBQ places but I'm in BBQ heaven here.

I'm so happy that I finally got to G.W.'s BBQ! I went mid week after the lunch rush & the line moved quickly. I tried the pork ribs & brisket, jalapeno corn, & bacon potato salad. Lord have mercy, it was so good - all of it! I wanted to try the turkey, but I arrived after the turkey sold out so I decided to came back on Saturday. Good call. They had PASTRAMI BEEF RIBS on the Saturday menu! There's no other way to say it, it was a culinary delight! I got the turkey too, it was so good that I'm getting GW's Turkey & sides for Thanksgiving. Kudos to everyone at GW's. On both visits I was treated so kindly that I truly felt like a valued customer! This is more than BBQ, this is a destination restaurant. If you've ever been to some of the best BBQ places in Texas, you understand that there will be a line, & if you get there late, items will sell out. THIS BBQ is a high quality product, so expect to pay for exceptional food and enjoy the ride. YOLO .

This is as good as it gets in Texas. I’ve eaten at an handful of excellent bbq restaurants in Texas, but GW’s had the best food AND the best service. Absolutely amazing food and friendly service. Ribs might be the best I’ve ever had. Brisket equaled the best I’ve ever had. Turkey was to die for. Sausages were incredible. I’d also like to say that I loved the spicy bbq sauce. Next time I’ll buy a bottle. I got there at 10:00 am Thursday morning and was first in line. I checked out the pits and talked to other people in line. At least 3 of the workers came to talk to me and seemed genuinely interested in where I came from and my opinions on Bbq. After sitting down I also talked to employees who were helpful and interested in my opinions on the food. I will be back for sure.

My wife and I just had a most incredible first visit. We are from San Antonio and have driven by many times and have never stopped, while visiting family. So glad we finally did. Have always heard rumors of them running out of meat. But today was our day. The brisket is so tender and juicy. The turkey is awesome and moist. Roasted Garlic sausage so delicious.

Google
I’ve waited the hour in line and ate inside and was so happy with the food. With liking the barbecue I decided to do their thanksgiving catering options for the holiday. I got just the brisket, and made my own sides. The brisket came out just like how it does in the restaurant with following their instructions to reheating it the day of thanksgiving. I was able to even chop up the brisket like they do with just my hands alone. The only downside was having to wait two hours in a line of many others who did the pickup catering option to pick it up on Wednesday the day before.

Yelp
Review: The Joint That Earned Its Texas Top 5 Spot Having heard the buzz--specifically the honor of being named a Top 5 BBQ Joint in Texas by Texas Monthly--we had high expectations stepping into this establishment. From the innovative menu to the extremely friendly and attentive staff, it's clear this isn't just a barbecue pit; it's a culinary experience that absolutely earns its high placement. The staff immediately set the tone, describing all the options in detail and offering continuous check-ins throughout our meal. The indoor seating area is large, though a few outside seats are available. We started with the "Texas Two Step" three-meat deal, adding an extra sausage link and, crucially, making room for dessert. The Meats: Smoke, Glaze, and Innovation The traditional meats were excellent, but the house-made sausages truly shone: * Pork Ribs: These were stellar. They featured a beautiful, sweet glaze and were perfectly tender. The meat offered that ideal balance--it was nearly fall-off-the-bone, yet still maintained a perfect pull. * Brisket: The star of Texas BBQ presented with a nice smoke ring and a good smoke flavor. While the slice was a little dry compared to the ribs, the overall quality and depth of flavor were still quite high. * Jalapeño and Gouda Sausage: An absolute showstopper. Every bite delivered an excellent kick of jalapeño paired with oozing Gouda cheese. It's a must-try for any fan of spicy, cheesy goodness. * Chimi Queso Sausage: We had to sample the in-house, double-ground Chimi Queso link--a testament to their commitment to innovation right on the meat board. Next-Level Sides Forget simple coleslaw and beans; the sides here are complex, delicious, and stand on their own as main attractions: * Pork Belly Fried Rice: This side delivered a nice spice and was packed with satisfying pieces of pork belly. The final flourish was a great sauce topping that added a wonderful depth of flavor to the rice. * Maple Roasted Sriracha Brussels Sprouts: A perfectly executed dish. The Brussels sprouts had a nice char, and the addition of peppers and a subtle maple flavor was simply fabulous. * Roasted Jalapeño Creamed Corn: This was perfectly balanced--nice and spicy but retaining a comforting, slightly creamy texture. Desserts: Over-the-Top Indulgence The dessert menu is where this establishment goes from Top 5 to maybe number one. These aren't just afterthoughts; they are culinary converts: * Honey Butter Cornbread: Oh my. I generally do not like cornbread, but I have been completely converted. It was given to us complimentary, and I can confidently say this is a dessert in its own right--over the top delicious. * Hog Fat Smoked Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookie: This was declared the best chocolate chip cookie ever. The "bacon" fat (hog fat) adds an incredible depth of flavor to the already decadent chocolate. This cookie is truly to die for. * Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding: A smooth, comforting finish with doughy and rich chocolaty flavors, topped off with a fantastic caramel topping. Final Verdict The "Texas Monthly Top BBQ awards" got it right. This place is well-placed as a top 5 Texas BBQ restaurant based on its exceptional quality, unique menu selections, and innovative culinary approach. Combine the stellar food with a staff that is genuinely friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, and you have a truly unforgettable dining experience.

Yelp
Wanted to try it bad experience. Had never gone. Was very expensive one meat. Ribs beef. They gave three little pieces that were touch and tasteless. They charged me 41.00 dollars. Ridiculous. Don't know how they say it is good. Don't go. One meat two side for that price. too expensive for tough meat

Yelp
One of the best meals you will ever have. A 90 minute wait is typical, because it's that good. They give you free beer in line.

Yelp
I came down to the RGV on business. Did a little research on some bbq and saw some videos on GW's. I was sold after seeing good reviews on Yelp. Arrived for lunch at open which was 11 and the parking lot was full. And there was a line outside to get in which was not a surprise. Our wait outside was 45 minutes. There is water outside after all it is oppressively hot in STX. They do stagger how many can go inside at a time to order. It is a counter and you order your sides first and burgers. We went with the #1 family meal which was a 1/2 lb of brisket, pork ribs, choice of sausage and 2 8oz sides with bread, pickles, pickled red onion and sliced white onion no drink included. Our sides were macaroni and cheese and pork belly rice. I added another 1/4 lb of brisket and 1/4 pound of sliced pork loin. It did not seem like enough food that is why I ordered extra. The price per lb of brisket is overpriced at $34 a pound. I had originally ordered the jalapeno cheddar sausage and they stated that they were out of that and beef sausage at 11:45. I had to settle for the Serrano pineapple sausage. There is no reason to run out of one the Texas trinity bbq staples 45 mins after opening. I did enjoy the flavor of everything we ate plus had a little leftovers. I am sure we'll be back next time in the valley but will be more conservative due to the high pricing here.

Yelp
Bomb brisket sandwich! Almost didn't get mine as they were running low on meet for the day! Next time I know to get there early!

Yelp
Melt in your mouth brisket! Sides were generous and so tasty! We had plenty of leftovers! The rhubarb cobbler was delicious as well

Yelp
Omg this was the best bbq we have ever eaten and we are from Houston. Everything we had was fresh and homemade. I ordered the Honey Butter Cornbread and that was amazing it tasted like having a cornbread muffin but a Carmel candy with it. Will be definitely coming back when we are in town.

Yelp
Our trek to visit all of the 2023 "25 Best New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas" is now complete. Our final destination on this list was GW's BBQ in San Juan. The goal of the pitmasters was to bring the Central Texas style of BBQ to South Texas. This style includes oak smoked meats and homemade sausages served in a cafeteria-style line, meats carved right in front of you and served on red butcher paper. When we arrived at 11:30 in the morning, a line had already formed. It was not a long wait as our host, David, kept the line moving. The dining room was clean and spacious. David walked around the room making sure that everyone had what they needed and was quick to get anything that was requested. Our meal was an excellent culmination of our culinary adventure. As usual, we ordered the Texas Trinity. The brisket was moist and tender. It paired very well with their original and sweet heat BBQ sauces. Their homemade sausage also had a good flavor. A sweet mustard BBQ sauce complemented this meat very well. For us, the stars of the show were the pork ribs. They were meaty, tender and had a delicious savory, sweet glaze. Typically, ribs are not my go to choice but I would definitely order the ribs again. There was a plethora of sides to choose from which made it very hard for me. We settled on the Cilantro Lime Coleslaw, Salsa Macha Green Beans, Brisket Baked Beans and Pork Belly Rice. The coleslaw had a base of crunchy green cabbage with a creamy mayonnaise dressing and fresh lime juice, which gave it a vibrant, acidic kick. This was by far our favorite side of this meal. The Salsa Macha Green Beans were fresh, crisp beans marinated in a Mexican sauce of dried chilies, garlic and oil. They were topped with peanuts (optional). The Brisket Baked Beans were your typical baked beans enhanced with brisket and a bit of jalapeño. The Pork Belly Rice was a seasonal addition. It was flavorful, smoky, and peppery pork belly mixed with rice. We were very happy that our last destination was so enjoyable. As an added note, since this restaurant made the 2023 "25 Best New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas" it has gone on to rank #5 on the 2025 Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping in and checking it out.

Yelp
I'll start off saying that these guys probably have the best brisket and turkey I've tried in the RGV! The brisket and turkey are freshly smoked and super moist. The only negative I'd say is that they are expensive at $32/lb for the brisket, so it's probably going to be a rare treat to make the trip here from Edinburg, but it's definitely good bbq though. The bark on the brisket is tasty and it's not overly smokey, with the fatty pieces just melting in your mouth. Everything is served with fixings of your choice and white potato bread. The only side we tried was green beans and they were delicious! The service was friendly and attentive. They quickly let me know that their kitchen was closed and what meats were still available. I did have a small issue with the final bill when I noticed I was charged incorrectly for something. The owner or manager was very communicative with me online when I reached out and explained it was done in error and offered to give me a refund for the mistake which I declined. FYI, this business now charges a 4% fee on your total if you use a credit card.

Yelp
This BBQ spot is good! The most notable thing about this spot is that they have the best pickles!!! They are homemade tasting pickles. They are so crunchy and have the perfect amount of sour to them. They also sell jars of them by themselves, and I will be picking myself up a jar next time. I got their brisket burger, and it was great. The server filled it up with lots of meat, and the juicy brisket was cut right in front of me. It was super moist and tender. I also tried their potato salad and mac and cheese, and both were good. They weren't anything crazy though. I also tried their original BBQ sauce, which was great. It had a tangy flavor to it, but it was not too spicy. Customer service was average. Ordering is done in a line, and they give you the food right away when paying. Ambiance of the restaurant is loud. There were lots of groups gathered for lunch from work and families eating. Environment is welcoming though, and there are plenty of tables. There is free parking in a lot in front of the restaurant. Overall, I'd recommend this spot for anyone looking for a solid BBQ spot. 9/10, and try their pickles!!

Yelp
Came in because the reviews were good, and a couple of co-workers said it was good! Man, was he wrong. A day before, I had stopped Black's bbq in Lufkin and ought a brisket sandwich with a drink and chips and desert for about 18 bucks with a tip. So I walked into this place and saw the menu says a brisket sandwich is 15 dollars by itself.. I was likenok ill give it a try. Got the brisket combo which was 15 plus 3 bucks for a combo, which includes a drink and a side. My side was the mac and cheese. Got to my table and took a bite of the sandwich, which was not dry dry but not moist, and it was rubbery rubbery. Mind you, I went in a little after the lunch rush, so it should have been fresh. The bun was the best thing out of the sandwich. I then tried the Mac, and to my surprise, as soon as I took a spoonfuls I tasted something odd. I pulled out a long black hair! I shave my head so it wasn't mine. I looked at the employees, not a single hair net in sight smh. I walked up to the register and let the employee know, and she asked if I wanted a replacement. I told her I would take the desert, which was Brad puddi g with chocolate chips. Let me tell you the desert was so sweet that when I took a swig of the sweet tea, it tasted like water. The worst part is that I never saw them take the contaminated Mac off and replace it they kept serving it smh. The brisket sandwich 1 outa 10 Mac 0 outa 10 if it wasn't for the hair 4 outa 10 cheesey Bread pudding 3 outa 10 diabetes coma Employees 2 outa 10 didn't replace the contaminated mac If you like this place, more power to you, but it's a hard No from me. Regardless this is just my opinion and I'm not telling you to not go maybe it was just an off day for me. These prices were outrageous for what I got .

Yelp
Best BBQ in the RGV hands down. GWs never disappoints. We tried their smoked pork belly and it was the bomb, aside from the brisket n turkey, which were great as well. Their sides are super tasty. Gotta have that moist sweet corn bread they offer. Central BBQ is legit in the Valley thanks to GWs, no need to travel far to get the real deal!

Rosalinda D.

Yelp
GWs was plus 5 across the board!! The food, service , and restaurant was AMAZING! Everyone was super friendly and attentive . They even came around asking us how their food was ... we were happy to say it was Outstanding!! My hubby is a huge BBQ fanatic and we had already tried 3 BBQ places . ...by far this has been the best in the valley and even tops some in San Antonio . Great job to GW and his staff !

MC C.

Yelp
Lovely and delicious food! Fabulous customer service! Great and fun time! Had to be in line an hour before opening but definitely worth the wait!!!

Yelp
On the recommendation of UTRGV Women's Soccer Coaches Audra and Mel we came by yesterday and this place was sold out by 1. So glad we came by early today. The B E S T BBQ we've ever had. From the signature brisket to the collard greens every bite was an explosion of flavor and Texas pride. The hospitality is the kind you'd expect from a place like this too. Great food and great people. Thanks David and the crew and GW!!!

Yelp
Best bbq that I had in south Texas, privately own business thats why. highly recommend

Maria L.

Yelp
Very good quality meat. Amazing flavor and good customer service! Waiters and workers were so helpful.

Jon G.

Yelp
My wife and I have had BBQ all around Texas but GW's by far the best BBQ in the Rio Grande valley. You definitely need to get there at 11:00AM when it opens the brisket sells out quick and for good reason. Our first time visiting we had pork ribs , sides: Mac and cheese and hash brown casserole were delicious, it's has a touch of their own ingredients. I don't like corn bread but the corn bread from there is amazing, I know for Thanksgiving I will be ordering corn bread from GW's. The Cook David came over and talked to us a few times asking about the service and food "Excellent David". If you love BBQ and live in Texas you need to try GW's and that because we didn't get to try the brisket, "We will be back at 11:00AM" LOL

Alana G.

Yelp
Amazing! Food was great. Best bbq I've had in the valley. 10/10 if you have the chance to come, COME!

Emerson G.

Yelp
Excellent EVERYTHING! Best bbq place in the Rgv ! Don't miss out their brisket and peach cobbler.
google avatar

Matthew E.

Yelp
Best bbq in the valley and not even close. Very close competition with Teddys but GW's is just on another level. Everything is cooked to perfection and you can tell the pitmaster takes pride in his work!
google avatar

Sid R.

Yelp
GW BBQ located in San Juan TX. Visited this location on Saturday 11/11/23. I've had bbq everywhere and GW is by far the best . The brisket was the moist and delicious. The food was great and so was the service. The picture shown here feeds 4-5. The food was hot and fresh. With lots of sides to choose from make sure you get there early. They close Monday's and Tuesday.
google avatar

Chevy R.

Yelp
Excellent BBQ and customer service. The owner and staff were so very kind and accommodating! They knew we were flying out so they helped us package our food for the trip. Everything was amazing but the greens are best I've ever tasted in my life and Im from Louisiana. My go to spot from now on whenever I'm in south Texas.
google avatar

JoAnn T.

Yelp
hands down, the best bbq in the rgv! we drive from San Antonio to eat ! everything is made fresh and so delicious.
google avatar

Ruben P.

Yelp
Superb barbecue! Awesome sauces!! Phenomenal coleslaw!! Highly recommend! Mac and cheese excellent!!

Lizette G.

Yelp
BEST BRISKET AND BRISKET SMASH BURGER in TX! GWs can't be beat. We were too late for the other sides, but I'm sure they would have exceeded all expectations.
google avatar

Deann F.

Yelp
Having a wheat allergy I have to be careful with everywhere I go. I have to ask at every eating place. When asking at this place if certain dishes, and the bbq sauce had flour or if it was gluten free I was met with uhhh I don't know and no interest in finding out. I had to ask them to please ask the cook who came out and acted annoyed that I was even asking. Eating places literally put flour in EVERYTHING from bbq sauce and other sauces to mashed potatoes. Things you don't typically think it would be in. So, I went back to ask about a couple of other things and the guy went to the back and the cook turned around and gave me an annoyed look yet again. Like why? I can't help if I have an allergy and my throat closes and lips swell and I'd like to eat safely. No reason to be so rude over it. I won't even tell my rating for the food I'm so aggravated over how they were when I asked.
google avatar

Ralph S.

Yelp
Some really good bbq. We arrived around 3pm and they were already out of sausage and chicken. Also they were out of potato salad and Mac and cheese. We tried the flat and point from the brisket and they were both so good! Their spare ribs were also good with a sweet after taste. We had their last two ribs. They were a little cold, but good none the less. We were unable to taste the Dino ribs since they're only served on Saturdays.

Aj F.

Yelp
Good food good workers recommend if your craving BBQ the employees are so nice I love the ribs there
google avatar

Beverly B.

Yelp
At 5:30 the restaurant was closed with a sign on the door that they were sold out. Hours are supposed to be until 9 pm. For a relatively new restaurant this is very poor management.

J R.

Yelp
New Bbq restaurant in San Juan. Delicious food and very friendly service. We had a one meat plate with moist brisket, potato salad and mac n cheese (for the wife.) I had the three meat moist brisket, spare ribs and sausage with a double coleslaw. We thought everything was delicious. The brisket was the star attraction. It was tender, moist and flavorful. I think they just use just salt and pepper on it. It was simple but fantastic. All of the sides were very good as well.
google avatar

Austin D.

Yelp
Brisket was off the chain good I tried the lean and moist and both where super juicy. But let me tell yea the cream corn is something amazing!!!!

b m.

Yelp
Went today for the first time. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Ordered the smash burger and it was great! It was huge and the meat was at least 3/4 inch thick. This is no ordinary burger you can get from any drive through. You'll need to try it you won't be sorry. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Brenda B.

Yelp
I was impressed. Brisket was good, had a little bit fat which I didn't mind but was too much for my fiance. They gave us a piece of turkey to try which was great. My fiance loved the ribs and sausage. I had mac n cheese which was creamy. Also had jalapeño creamed corn which I loved also. We will definitely be going back.

Jeremy B.

Yelp
The customer service was great, the staff always made sure everything was good and asking if you needed anything else. The sides steal the show, especially the cornbread and the jalapeño cream corn!
