Born as a Raleigh taco truck, Gym Tacos now turns out crowd‑favorite street tacos and flashy tower nachos at multiple local locations. Covered by the News & Observer and spotlighted by Eater Carolinas, it remains a lively, independent operation.

I used to go to Gym Tacos very frequently. Their food is really delicious. The place is ok. Not a big fan of it but ok. I think that the Chorizo and Al Pastor may be the tasty ones you should not miss. Be careful with the Serrano pepper, it might be very very spicy. Sometimes you wouldn’t think it’s a Serrano pepper.

Google
This informal restaurant has counter service, with a sauce station, beverage station and both indoor and outdoor tables. The food is terrific! There were many choices, some unique, and included both vegetarian and gluten-free options. Both times I visited, with different people, everyone in my group was happy with their food. The portions are large and prices are reasonable. The sauces are house-made and some of the best around.

Google
Super busy but absolutely worth it! The food was amazing. I got a bunch of different tacos and not one was even one notch under perfection. Authentic Mexican food. I can almost guarantee satisfaction. Not cheap but worth it for sure.

Google
Just hands down our favorite place. Excellent food with great flavors. I always get the quesadilla and bring home leftovers because it's huge. Chicken is amazing. We also love the pastor tacos with pineapple garnish. They have several salsas to choose from, the dark red spicy is the best but they are all good in their own right! The service is great, tonight they brought us a mouse brownie dessert that we hadn't ordered or requested and it was just amazing. Voila here you are! Super cool atmosphere as well with graffiti and decor. Again, hands down our favorite place.

Google
I’ve been going to Gym Tacos since they were just a food truck, and let me tell you they’ve never missed. As someone who’s super picky with tacos and grew up on the real thing, this is hands-down the most authentic place I’ve found in Raleigh. Every bite makes me feel like I just stepped into a taquería back in México. The flavor? Chef’s kiss. The service is always fast and friendly, the variety on the menu keeps me coming back for more, and don’t even get me started on their aguas frescas they’re unmatched. If you’re looking for real-deal tacos that taste like home, this is it. Thank you Gym Tacos for holding it down and keeping it auténtico.

Google
Food. The burrito was filled with fresh grilled steak, rice, beans, onions, cilantro, and salsa wrapped in a flour tortilla. It was neatly made and wrapped to making eating enjoyable. The chips, salsa, and queso were really good as well. The real salsa that come with the chips must be requested if you want extra and is purchased separately. The Vegetarian Tostada is a crispy corn shell with refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, veggies, and avocado. The Vegetarian Tacos were pleasantly filling. There's inside and outside seating.

Google
This is a fun place to get tacos/burritos/quesadillas etc-- Informal dining, pay/pick up food at counter style, ideal to stop in and out, or can hang as long as you'd like. Everything we ordered was great. I was impressed with the surf and turf burrito, really put together well. Would come back for sure.

Google
Tacos were good. I would say they are really good average tacos. It's a big menu that helps everyone find something they like. I really wanna go back and split those nachos with another person. The peanut salsa pairs well with the pastor tacos and it's like medium hot, so not as bad as they lead you to think.

Yelp
They are very generous with the amount of shrimp that goes into the gym taco. The shrimp was fresh and basically falling off in every bite. This was probably my favorite and it tasted delicious with the lime and salsa. I also ordered the suadero and lengua tacos but it was difficult to distinguish between the two, which goes to say the lengua quality wasn't that great. The suadero was alright but nothing to write home about. I know it's not authentic, but I'm not a big corn tortilla lover, so I liked that the default tortillas were made of flour and that they also only came with one. The food came out pretty quickly, the workers were kind, and there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to choose from on a Monday night.

Yelp
Not impressed. After hearing so many people talk about this location I decided to give it a shot.. I expected a lot seeing the cooks in the back, but once I got my burrito, I knew it wasn't gonna be good. I got a vegetarian burrito that did not have much flavor a lot of sour cream, black beans, tasteless rice. It is also very expensive the burrito coming out to $17.. I've had better burritos at Salsa fresh for only $9.

Yelp
Forgot to take a picture of my food, but I got two tacos one Carne Asada and one El Pastor. It was my first time there and I've heard plenty of people talk about it, so I sat inside it was a bit warm in there. There's also a salsa bar , on the weekends though jalapeños and I think cilantro are added on there. The size portions were decent. I chose an orange spicy sauce and green, medium sauce from the salsa bar to add on it. It also came with a side of sliced limes, cucumbers, and onions on the side. I enjoyed my tacos and I'll come back and try some different ones again.

Yelp
Solid, hot food with fast service. There was a station by the cash register that had different sauces to put on your food which was nice. The quesadilla was pretty heavy and greasy but was a delicious meal to have before day drinking. The tacos were good, just a bit dry but the hot sauce took it up a notch.

Yelp
Similar setup to El Toro in South Raleigh, but the food is off the chain! The cashiers are very friendly and make fantastic recommendations. Definitely worth repeat visits! Their horchata is even better than my own homemade! I got two cabeza, two lengua, one brisket, and a roasted jalapeno and white onion blend, and the jalapeno kicked my ass! Lol nicely done everyone! Definitely a place you can take the kids. No reusable silver and self-serve to clean up. Very clean inside and a moderate amount of parking.

Yelp
Gym Tacos never disappoints! Just like a gym in January, this place is always packed. One of my favorite tacos spots in the city! My go to items are the Gym Tacos, steak tacos, and chips and queso! They have both indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Esther N.

Yelp
It was crowded but they went through the line at lightning speed. The food tastes great I would have given a 5 start had it been hot. They have a really cute outside seating area.

Yelp
This place sucks. The food is fine, but the customer service is only bad. Expect inconsistency overall and no salsa even when they give you the option to request it (you'll get zero). We've given them multiple tries and each time something completely fails. But the worst part is passive aggressive jerks which is unfortunate since the product would be fine. Basic stuff here that they fail at which makes giving them your money really not worth it.

Yelp
Hit up Gym Tacos and left in a foodgasm. Their digs are clean af and good came out in like over/under 4 minutes. Sat outside and heard a fire playlist and the sting lights add a cool backyard quinceñera feel. Cecina tostada was salty, smoky, and crispy like the panthers o line next season. Chorizo taco? Wet, spicy, perfect. Sauce lineup went crazy: * Green salsa was clean, * Avocado cilantro was smooth, * But that house tomatillo? Heisman-level. Jamaica drink slapped too -- sweet, cold, undefeated. Gym Tacos got that 5-star flavor. Roll Tacos.

Yelp
Will never order from here again. This is the 2nd time they've been so rude to me. I order on DoorDash because my company gives us credit so we get free lunch. I walk over and pick up my food every day. Today, I waited over 30 minutes. When I asked the girl to check, she said, "You see how busy we are". I was very polite, her not so much. She told me that every single person that walked up (10-15 mins after I ordered) was priority because they ordered in person. This was my favorite lunch spot, but I won't go back. I watched for the time I was waiting how rude she was to every single customer. This is the 2nd time they were rude to me. Last week, they put shrimp on my taco and I'm highly allergic. I checked the receipt I did not order shrimp.

Yelp
Nice location, cheerful staff and good selection. Ordered Gym Tacos- shrimp taco with homemade Chipotle mayo, spring mix, avocado cream and Pico de Gallo. Salsa selection fresh, bright and tasty, not run of the mill selection.

Yelp
Not the prettiest picture but it was so good I nearly forgot! This was my first time straying away from tacos and trying something new. The shrimp tostada was so refreshing and filling. Dressed mine up with a little drizzle of tomatillo, green salsa, and squeeze of lime! ‍ Washed everything down with a Jamaica Aguas Frescas. 10/10 first time experience trying Gym Tacos but I will be back (& I cant wait! )

Yelp
Got takeout for 6 people, and ordering directly from the restaurant over the phone saved us almost $20-$30 in fees versus ordering online. Got a bunch of tacos, a shrimp burrito, some sides, and sauces from their bar. Everything was very tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed my shrimp burrito with that gym sauce!
google avatar

Yelp
The person who took our orders was super friendly, patient with our kids, and down to earth. The food is the star of the show, though. I had a burrito, which was huge and full of fresh ingredients. The pico had sliced radishes in it, and I never thought it would be good but somehow it was great. The vibe of the seating area was not unlike any fast food restaurant, but the hand painted ceiling and salsa bar made it feel a bit more local and cozy. My entire family enjoyed their meals, which is a feat in and of itself.

Yelp
I always have a great experience at Gym Tacos. The food is awesome and service is fast and excellent!
google avatar

Desiree D.

Yelp
Appears to be a local favorite and it was tasty. I think the draw is the salsa bar...which means your taco comes pretty dry and you can add what you want. Which is not my thing. I did enjoy the tostada and the staff were pleasant.

Yelp
Have been coming here for the past month at least 2 times a week. After our experience today we will no longer come back. My son brought me here for my birthday and we ordered. Got the food and the guy had not rang up the correct amount of tacos. We told him, instead of attempting to fix it for us (we would have gladly paid the extra money) he said well I only rang up 2, so that is what you got. Wow, not even trying to have an any customer service. We will go to Chubys Tacos from now on.

Cherie R.

Yelp
Poor quality food and dirty restaurant. The soda fountain had slime in the drip tray, there was hair on the floor, the topping/sauce bar was unclean and warm. The loudspeaker system to hear your order # was useless. You could not pay me to go there again.

Yelp
Food 5 Atmosphere 5 Parking 5 Outdoor seating This was my first time at the restaurant I have gone to the food truck and I was not disappointed, I tried the shrimp taco The chicken and the tacos I can not wait to get a burrito from there! I am going back next weekend they are stuck in my brain. This is the only gym I am going to right now
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
Gym tacos has very good tasting food nice counter help and clean tables. I ordered a chicken burrito and split with my daughter it was big enough for two. I am glad we ordered the burrito after seeing someone else's order- the tacos were very small.
google avatar

Priyanka B.

Yelp
Came here for tacos and nachos, left feeling very satisfied. My fiance stated that the chicken tacos where one of the best in Raleigh. I got the nachos and they were amazing! The toppings are spread throughout so the toppings weren't only in one area. The gym taco special sauce is delightful! Can't wait to go back and have more nachos and try their tacos as well
google avatar

Yelp
First time at Gym Tacos. The place was packed inside and out on a Wednesday evening. You order at the counter and grab a seat and they call your number when your food is ready. Husband and I ordered the nachos with carnitas. I love that there's a help yourself salsa bar. The avocado salsa (mild) was very good. The medium red salsa had a deep color which made it look like it would be spicier but it was tasty and not above medium spice level. Nachos were a big portion -- perfect for two. I did not like the carnitas. They were chunks of meat and many were fatty. However, the ratio of beans, cheese, guacamole, etc. on the nachos was perfect. I think next time I would try chicken or no meat.

Yelp
I have been wanting to visit since they opened and finally made it. Cute place, cool atmosphere, and good crowd. I started with the Gringa-very tasty. It wasn't quite enough so I went back for a chicken taco. Both were really good and the sauces were delicious! I tried 4 of them and can't decide which I like the best! Spoke with a couple of people while I was there. One customer is in love with the quesadillas and says he comes too often but can't help himself. The lady I talked to was a first time visitor like me so we compared what we had. She thought the quesadilla was great as well. Guess I will be having to come back soon to have one for myself!

Yelp
"GREAT, fresh Mexican really close to NCSU" Came here on a Friday night a little after 6pm. Was pleased to see they have multiple outdoor picnic tables with umbrellas, so easy to eat safely during the pandemic. It's an unassuming little restaurant, shaped a bit like a converted fast food joint. Also like a fast food joint, one stands in line to order, then they call your number to get food. I ordered the torta sandwich with shrimp, as did my son. His friend ordered a steak torta, and my wife ordered a chicken tostada. Yes, we're weird that none of us actually ordered tacos. The shrimp tortas came in at around $15 each (before tax and tip), and the steak one was a bit less. We also got chips & salsa for an appetizer, and horchatas or jamaicas to drink. We got our food in maybe 10 minutes-- it was a large and more complicated order, so a few people who ordered food got theirs before us. But we were FLOORED at the SIZE and QUALITY of the food. The sandwiches were gigantic. I'm appending a picture of HALF of my sandwich-- wow! And it was SO good-- the shrimp tasted fresh (certainly not canned), the avocado slices were divine, and the sandwich was perfectly toasted. It blew me away how good it was. Everyone was thrilled with both the quantity and quality of their food. The drinks were large and excellent too... amazing jamaica. Even the salsa that came with the chips & salsa appetizer came in a giant plastic tub, and the boys kept the leftover chips and salsa to take back to their dorm. We also appreciated the little salsa bar to allow you to sample different types (and well-labeled as mild/ medium/ hot as well as what's in them). The place (including restroom) was also clean despite being pretty crowded-- testament to good upkeep. Service was friendly and helpful. When they saw us "lurking" waiting for the food, they did check in for us. While not fast-food prices, it's WAY better than fast-food quality, and probably quantity too. Excellent value. I'd absolutely happily come back here again. (Thanks to my friend Gary who recommended it.)

Yelp
Really awesome tacos and very affordable AND really helped me and my wife after a pretty big online order mishap so great service too, very highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is like a Taco Truck on steroids! Everything is delicious, great atmosphere, lots of indoor seating, excellent service. Nacho Tower is huge, great big serving sizes. Reasonably priced. Taco Truck lovers must visit this place! Nacho Tower , Sope , Carne Asada , Burrito , Horchata

Yelp
When my coworker told me that this was the best burrito he'd had in awhile, I was a little skeptical. Having lived in California for many years, my standards are high and my desire for a solid tortilla is sound. But this place delivered on all fronts. My boyfriend and I each tried a different one, surf&turf and chicken, and both were fantastic. The chicken one is truly a work of art, not sure what they season it in...but it's amazing. I'll be making the trek out here again soon!
google avatar

Nichole K.

Yelp
So good! The chicken tacos were yummy. I like the salsa bar. They were quick when I was there and a great place for lunch.

Yelp
Originally a Burger King, Gym Tacos has updated the renovations Hieubowl started, and the building looks great! It's still order at the counter, and the service is friendly and helpful. Because tacos at places like this tend to run small, I ordered one Gym Taco (it was loaded with shrimp; I had them hold the mayo) and two chicken tacos. The homemade corn tortillas were on the small side, but they were so packed with filling that I was stuffed after two and took a chicken taco home. My friend enjoyed his torta, even though it easily fell apart. We were there on a cold, wet Saturday afternoon, and we easily found a table. The manager who stopped by, though, told us that Saturdays are usually packed, so we got lucky. If you go on a Saturday, definitely plan to wait!
google avatar

Carly S.

Yelp
Simply delicious! The staff was super friendly, the atmosphere was very lively, and the tacos were out of this world! I paid $16 for 4 tacos (2x Al pastor, 1x gym taco, and 1x asada) and each of them were stuffed with meat and toppings. I did not leave hungry! The Al pastor will forever be my favorite; between the savory and sweet combination, it just hits right. The asada was cooked perfectly and super moist, and the shrimp was not over cooked at all. I also had a chance to stop by their taco truck another night and the food and service is just as good there! The only thing I would recommend they change, is to add a TV to post what number is ready or find a better system for that. They end up just yelling out the number or name, and with it being loud in the restaurant it can be hard to hear.

Yelp
I accidentally went to the food truck first and decided I wanted to sit in a restaurant. Therefore, I changed the address to the storefront. Plenty of parking there but it the spaces are small. I actually saw 2 ppl arguing on my walk in bc some guy hit another guys car opening his car door. The food tho... Awesomesauce. I got a couple of tacos. The gym taco, a chorizo taco, a gringas and some other kind of taco. Highlights for me... The gringas was so good! And my pineapple Jarritos (soda) was dope. The worker pointed me in the direction of the bottle opener but it was attached to the sauce counter and I had no idea how to use it. Luckily, another customer saw my struggle and helped out! I enjoyed the chorizo taco and the the gym (shrimp) taco. It was weird to me that everything was a La carte so sides weren't included but I enjoyed it enough that I will definitely return.
google avatar

Phillip C.

Yelp
Good service, lots of indoor seating. Overall reasonably priced for what you get. I ordered 4 tacos and a horchata (which was great). Really solid option for tacos in the area. Will definitely keep coming back
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
I love the Gym Taco truck so I was excited to try the restaurant! It was the same great quality and authentic food from their original truck. They were packed but service was still super fast. I love all the salsas they have for free for you to top your food with (my favorite is the Avacado salsa)! We didn't get the nachos but saw a few other people with them and they were huge, would definitely give that a try next time!
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
Gym Tacos has amazing tacos and a lot of other options!I recommended the Al Pastor tacos, the flavor is incredible and the fresh pineapple on top is so good. Try it with the grilled onions and toreados. Definitely the best Al Pastor tacos I've had in Raleigh. I have also tried the nachos - they come in a bucket that you take off and it's like a nacho tower - a little difficult to eat but pretty good. They also have a variety of fresh salsas to choose from. A must-try taco spot!
google avatar

Frank W.

Yelp
Tacos were amazing and steak Burrito was the best I've ever had! Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend giving them your business!

Yelp
BLUF: F*** YEAH! Gym Tacos! This review is dedicated to the lady who gave my wife the cash she needed (around $15 IIRC) in order to pay at the truck where it was cash only. That was our first time ordering from Gym Tacos and didn't realize the truck was cash only. My wife was woefully short in cash, but this angel of the day swooped in and helped cover the cost! Amazing! We love you! And we've loved Gym Tacos ever since! Our go to order is their quesadilla with shrimp. One of the few places that don't overcook and kill the shrimp. It has that freshness and that 'snap' to it each time. I don't know what would have happened if our taco angel wasn't there to help. We would possibly have discovered our love for Gym Tacos a little later, but extremely happy they're in our lives now.

Yelp
I recently visited Gym Tacos on Hillsborough Road in Raleigh for some delicious tacos! I had heard of their taco truck in Six Forks Road (which I believe still exists?) I never made it to the food truck but had my eye on this place ever since they opened in what I believe used to be a Burger King. I ordered three tacos. One steak (Asada), one marinated pork (pastor), and one chicken (Pollo). All were very good, but I think I liked the pastor the best. Hard-to-beat marinated pork and pineapple. Since these are street tacos they are a bit small but delicious. At $3.50 per taco, 3 was all I could fo, but I have to say I was still hungry afterward. I wanted to add some rice and beans also but that would have been another $2.50 per each. It would be great if they had a special with tacos and rice and beans for a fixed price but everything looked to be "a la carte" from what I could decipher from their menu. I would definitely visit Gym tacos again for their delicious tacos and maybe even order the "Gym Taco" next time. They rank right up there with Chubby's and Taqueria El Toro as my favorite Raleigh taco places.
google avatar

Trisha L.

Yelp
Oh my gosh!! Run to Gym Tacos right now!! Delicious authentic street tacos! Their queso and their black beans are amazing too! I love their logo too!
google avatar

Yelp
Gym taco is one of my favorite places in Raleigh. I've never had anything bad here but my favorite is the Gringas with the pork. The meat is so flavorful.
google avatar

Beverly F.

Yelp
Its the quick service! Its the hot fresh asada tacos! Its the Jamaica agua fresca! Is the friendly staff that kindly gave me suggestions. I was staaaaaarving and wanted something that was yummy deliciousness...9:30 at night. Gym tacos did it for me! I added all of the side toppings to my order and tried all of the sauces. Yummmy deliciousness! What a way to end the night.
google avatar

Atayal T.

Yelp
I looooooove Gym Tacos. Their food is consistently delicious and they offer great portion sizes for what you pay. With tacos around $3.50 each, it's slightly more expensive than your typical taco truck, but so worth it. They pack each (single layered) corn tortilla with tons of protein, garnished with onions, cilantro, with some radish and cucumbers on the side. They have my favorite taco protein - cabeza - which is essentially shredded beef cheek. Don't let that freak you out though because it's the most tender, juicy beef ever. Three tacos usually leave me full and satisfied, but I'll occasionally get four if I'm really hungry. Other go-to proteins are their Pastor and Barbacoa. I've also gotten to try their tortas and burritos, and they're absolute units and so delicious as well. Their salsa bar is great, with different salsa flavors ranging from mild, to spicy, from smoky to peanut-y. I love mix and matching all the salsas, with the avocado salsa being a must try. Gym Tacos is a must-go whenever I'm around the area. The parking lot is a little small and can get crowded, but I believe there's street parking nearby. They definitely have a lunch rush though, so try going a little before or after lunch hours for the best chance at parking.

Yelp
these were so good i was able to split them with my friend. We told them how excited we were for them and have been talking about it for days and the cashier gave us a discount! Such good vibes def recommend supporting them!
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of eating from indoor to outdoor and from large parties to a single. I enjoy a good sope, and I always get their sope with cabeza and the green sauce. The quality of the meat is so good. If you order tacos, you'll see a difference in their tortillas. Holds up well.

Krystina H.

Yelp
It was my first time here and it was really good!! Steven was really friendly. He was at the cash register. The only thing I will say is, I don't like how you have to get your own salsa and other people aren't that sanitary. That's when Steven and another employee gave me my own hot sauce behind the counter. It was really really kind of them as I am extremely gemophobic. I will definitely be back but best believe I'm gonna keep my hot sauce in my bag. lol

Yelp
I came about a month ago and ordered a burrito. I ended up finding a rock in my burrito and almost broke my tooth. After the find, I brought it up to the front and they said they can make it again or refund it. At this point, I didn't feel comfortable eating another burrito from there so i requested a refund. They said they refunded me twice and printed me a receipt. On Monday, it was apparent they didn't credit the $18.82 burrito back to my card. The food was great, but the fact they didn't actually remove an inedible item from my order is pretty crumby. Aside form this, i'd be open to editing my review to reflect their food and service if resolved.
