Let's just put it out there that we're vegetarian (and WOW is it difficult to find vegetarian food on the island) who also avoids alliums (onions, garlic, leeks, chives, etc)... and the youngest member of the family is allergic to wheat, nuts, eggs, avocado, and kiwi. The first thing you need to know is most of the items on the menu here are wheat-based but they do not have gluten-free substitutes other than chips, so if you're gluten-intolerant or have celiac's disease, your choices are vastly reduced to a side of fruit. Or at least that was my youngest's only choice after we went through the menu and a few trips to the kitchen. Also, all of the sauces contain alliums, so we avoided those. (Sad, because I love sauce.)
This is a super casual, hippie place. You enter through the doors and there are menus, which you peruse before stepping up to the counter to order. You'll receive a number that you'll put on your table and they will bring your food out to you. Surrounding the counter are a lot of baked goods but we were busy with the menu. Especially since the line grew up to the door shortly after we arrived. The lady at the front is pretty nice but not knowledgeable about their food. She suggested macaroni and cheese after I told her we had a member who was allergic to wheat. At one point, she seemed reluctant to go to the back to ask questions. I'm guessing the place doesn't get too many people with food allergies since they do not have a binder with ingredients ready at the front.
We ended up getting:
CUSTOM PIZZA - This is large (~12 inches?) and a shareable size cut into 8 slices. You choose from a base, cheese, and 3 toppings. I chose a base of sliced tomatoes, mozzarella because we were sharing and the rest of my family doesn't like adventurous cheeses, topped with broccoli, mushrooms, and pineapple. The crust was great and the pizza delicious. Hubby thinks they use fresh pineapples! They did miss the broccoli though so we sadly had no greens on the pizza as we wanted. Maybe they thought the sliced tomatoes was a part of the toppings? My daughter loves pizza crust and she was very happy this. This isn't thin crust pizza.
CHURRO CHOCOLATE CHIP PANCAKES - This comes in a set of 2 the size of your dinner plate for $8 with a side of syrup and butter. Not too much cinnamon. Fluffy. Yum. Because of the size AB's my daughter ordered it, we had leftovers that we doggy bagged.
PANCAKE TACO WITH EGGS AND CHEDDAR - This is exactly what it sounds like and I have no regrets. A fluffy pancake filled with eggs and topped with shredded cheese. It was wrapped up and because the cheese was on top, a bit of it got stuck to the paper, so I wish they stuffed the cheese on the INSIDE so some melted cheese wouldn't be wasted, but I was still very much content with it. This was mine.
PINEAPPLE LEMONADE - This was on the countertop and I got it on a whim. I liked how the tropical sweetness of the pineapple cut through the tart lemonade.
Overall, the food was great!
HOWEVER, it took a long time to get the food. I think we waited around 30 minutes and it was only slightly better that we weren't the only ones - and it wasn't even THAT crowded yet (Thursday night at around 6 pm) though the place is clearly a favorite. In addition to dine in customers, they had a steady stream of phone orders for pick up. I can't imagine the wait time if it was on the weekend during busy hours!
Funky decor come to the rescue! My daughter started asking where the food was at the 5 minute mark, so I started a game of "I Spy" with all the paraphernalia on the ceilings and walls. We actually started running out of things to look for towards the end.
We'll likely return, maybe during slow hours, because the wait is a bit long for us and young kids. (Luckily, our youngest fell asleep or we'd have 2 unhappy kiddos on hand plus sad puppy eyes as he watches the rest of us eat.) If you're in a hurry or have plans, keep that in mind. I was there when a phone order came in and the wait time for that was 45 minutes. Because of the wait and lack of food substitutions/allergy friendly options, I teetered between 3 and 4 stars but decided to round down because though the staff there is fairly nice (but tired) and we enjoyed the food, they didn't seem to know much about food and that is potentially disastrous. We'll likely bring food with us for our youngest if we return.
