The Best Places to Eat During SF Pride, 2018 | Eater SF

"A cheap and reliable go-to in the Castro is this Greek/Middle Eastern spot, with gyros, kebabs, and falafel being the center of the menu. It’s a counter-service situation where you can be in and out in less than a half hour if you’ve got some priority drinking to do, and beer and wine are available too, including a couple of Greek and Turkish wines. In addition to some great hummus, the falafel here are some of the best and crispiest around." - Jay C. Barmann

Google
This place is cute, and their WiFi is decent when it's actually working, but this place is VERY misleading as they do not notify people of their food. A lawsuit is waiting to happen at this place given they're labeling food as vegan, but it's not.. specifically the Lentil Soup. The soup itself is pureed lentils, but they clarified with me today that the bread itself has eggs in it and they do not have other options to supplement it with. This is incredibly frustrating when I paid almost $20 for soup and a side of falafel and drove here to do work over dinner. If anyone with a dietary concern or restriction comes here, BEWARE as you are being lied to. God knows how many other "Vegan" options they have listed that do in fact contain animal ingredients. Walk a few steps across the street and go to Rossi's Deli as they have vegan food that is more filling, cheaper, and they've been in business for 57 years!

Google
Honestly, they have really great food. The hummus is really good and so is there chicken. The atmosphere was not great. While it was quiet, for the most part especially considering a Saturday night the day before Folsom Fair, there were patrons inside that were looking at and making reference toward females buttocks.... Personally, didn't feel like much of a safe space considering this is the Castro. Again though, the food is really good and the service was better than expected.

Google
I was really happy with this food. It hit the spot big time. Plenty of seating, beer and wine available. Amazing hummus and rice. Very good everything actually. The employees were handsome and friendly.

My wife had the Greek Salad with Lamb & Beef Gyro. I had a Lamb & Beef Gyro Wrap with fries. First, the service here is excellent. They move fast, and they're friendly. And the menu prices are very reasonable. My wife loved her Greek Salad; she has tried many of them and says this one is her favorite. That says a lot! My gyro wrap was delicious, but it wasn't a traditional gyro, which I'm an elitist about, but it was a delicious gyro. The meat was perfect, the seasoning was excellent, and they wrapped it up tight, burrito style. The fries were crispy, not greasy, and had a lot of flavors. It was a light, spicy Mediterranean flavor. I've already recommended Gyro Express to some friends living in the area.

Google
Underrated. Lentil soup is addicting, very tasty hummus (I’m not a fan of hummus, but I really like their version), skewers (even lamb one) are also great! I definitely recommend their plates and lentil soup. Honestly, I don’t consider it as Greek, it’s more Turkish/Kurdish (not sure about owner origins), but it’s a big plus. I don’t like Greek food, Turkish restaurants are way more superior imho (sorry, Greece).

Google
This place has rock solid lamb/beef schwarma and some of the best hummus anywhere. It's fast, consistent and tasty. Same goes for the lamb kabobs. There's a reason they're the only business that's survived on this corner since the days of the old camera shop. I was beginning to think that corner was jinxed for anyone brave enough to open there. :-P

Google
I saw a great review about this place and I was really exited to try, sadly I was really disappointed. The place has indoor and outdoor dining. You have to go order in the cash register and wait for your food then you can just sit wherever you want to. When I was ordering my food the server asked to see my vaccination card so I asked him if I needed it to eat outside(because my friend isn't vaccinated) he was kind of rude but he said no. When we received or wraps they were wrapped in a weird way there was foil inside the wrap it was kind of hard to eat. There was nothing especially about this place. I wouldn't come back.

Amazing place friend stuff. Delicious food. I happy that I found this place. Food feels like home. Also they have Ayran one of my favorites drink and it is also delicious 😋

Yelp
Wow, we are out for Italian food and said hey let's give this place a try... We were all very pleased... Excellent food, very fresh and tasty! Definitely would come back here again!

Yelp
The yogurt soup here is so yummy and nurturing. Definitely gotta get that every time. I love anything of theirs with falafel in it. Never had anything bad there, and the guys who work there are always nice. I like the seasoning on the fries, but they are too often not super fresh. All the rainbow decor inside and out really fits with the awesomely gay vibe of the Castro. They're open late. It's healthy and relatively fast food... great for a quick or late bite, but I wouldn't go there to impress a date. I wish it had a cozier feeling inside.

Yelp
Looking for a place to eat in the Castro. It's freezing outside, and they have all their doors and windows open. I'm not paying to eat at a restaurant that freezes its customers out.

Yelp
We had a catered lunch from Gyro Xpress today, and overall, it was a decent experience. I tried the Combo Gyro Wrap with lamb-beef and chicken, and while the wrap was neatly wrapped in foil with no leakage, I found it a bit too salty for my taste. On the plus side, the Chef's Salad was very fresh and quite tasty, which was a nice complement to the meal. Next time, I may try the chicken gyro wrap for a different flavor. A mixed experience, but not a bad choice for a quick Mediterranean bite.

Yelp
The adventure started at the top of Kite Hill when my boyfriend looked out at San Francisco and said, "I really want a gyro." We watched some dogs gallop through the grass and kept calling them Boot and Skipper. Turns out Boot's real name is Peanut. So we went down some stairs down to the Castro and lit up a joint. The wind made it impossible but it was worth it. I have my boyfriend order for me because I'm too high to be cool in public. He orders his gyro combo and me, a falafel combo. We battle the winds to walk back to my apartment and pop open the styrofoam once we're back to safety. The feeling of disappointment was palatable from my boyfriend when we realized we had two falafel combos and no gyros. Mission failed, we'll get 'em next time.

Yelp
For being open late and having such a gorgeous exterior this place deserves and automatic 5-star. The service is quick, friendly and I always see lovely people here. The location is perfect. I love how this spot combines fast food with Greek cuisine. Very unique and tasty food. I'm a frequent visitor.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Thank you for Yasin Bey's attention and care. The location of the store is very good.

Yelp
Stopped by here before going out for some marg's in the castro. Walked in and was able to have my order taken as soon as I was ready. Service was there and immediate, I wouldn't say the most friendly service but that doesn't bother me since it's a quick in and out type of stop. The food didn't take long maybe 5 minutes, the gyro was very good, but the garlic fries on the other hand were a hard pass for me. They consisted of raw diced garlic, which is not my preference when I order garlic fries. Definitely not work 6.50 + tax. Otherwise it was an overall good experience here, I love the ambience inside, with some good music and amble seating area where we can comfortable enjoy our mea

Yelp
1AM on a Tuesday and looking for food in the Inner Sunset? No worries. Doordash - Gyro Xpress! We got a couple of beef gyro plates and a couple of chicken gyro plates. We also ordered a bag of extra pitas and a hummus bowl. Very good! We had the food delivered so I can't comment on the ambiance or service, however I can tell you the food was really good, Doordash was pretty quick and the price was what I expected.

Umedjon S.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the staff is very friendly. I usually get soup and plates. I would recommend this place for all.

Yelp
Good food fast, as the name implies. Situated at the corner of Castro & 18th st, it stands as a beacon of goodness. The lamb & beef gyro wrap is perfectly spiced, ingredients are fresh, and best of all, you can sit at the window counter, best vantage point to judge passerby fashion. The ambiance is fast casual, interior could use a refresh, but who cares really, they survived the pandemic and have a steady flow of repeat customers. That says a lot. Grab your bev in the case, order & pay at the register, take your number & place it on the table of your choice. Soon enough, your order will be hand delivered. For a snack I recommend the heated up spanakopita. Enjoy!

Yelp
Stopped in here late night when most other restaurants were closed. Ordered the gyros plate. Service was incredibly fast. Gyros were quite solid. Hummus and pilaf were good. Pita was standard. Tzatziki was surprisingly tasty--both creamy and with a lovely fresh taste of cucumber. Hot sauce was good. I'm glad I finally tried Gyro Xpress. Honestly I'd buy the tzatziki by the tub. It's better than what I usually find sold retail in groceries. Atmosphere is super casual. You order at the counter and take a number.

Yelp
Perfect Greek flavors. I've tried the whole menu but my fav is Salmon plate and Lamb plate. Delicious. Service, is nice. Everyone very attentive. I like the Ambiance bc is not loud and the place is big enough to accommodate a fair amount of ppl. Price: very affordable for the sizes of their dishes.

Yelp
This place has been open for some years now and never got a chance to try it out till Sunday evening. You stand in line and order through an iPad, pretty simple and quick. The place looked clean and neat inside, plenty of seating for small or large groups. Got my food in a decent amount of time, I ordered the chicken kabobs. Food was delicious honestly. The issue started at 4am Monday when I had horrible stomach pain and spent Monday all day by the toilet. Either my chicken was very old, there was cross contamination happening in the kitchen or they are just not cleaning properly. Do yourself a favor and don't eat here.

Yelp
Went to order some food after a night out in the town and was met with a restroom that has no toilet paper, no soap, no seat covers, and bloody napkins on the floor. I arrived and the owner or manager, whoever the short guy with a combover is.... Told me before I could use or grab any utensils I must purchase something, which is fine. However, what I didn't expect is I would be meet with those previously mentioned gifts. I purchased a bowl, a drink, and a combo. I learned that I was allowed to purchase the items however, I was forced to use a disgusting restroom that had blood soaked napkins on the floor. No toilet seat covers. No toilet tissue. And no soap! Had I have known this I would have definitely used my money and services elsewhere. Feels like I am being bullied and pressured into using their services for their convenience without having a consideration as a paying customer. It was disgusting, belittling, and disrespectful to their paying customers.

Yelp
I love this place is a regular of mine. This evening I wasn't pleased. The delivery driver left my food outside in the cold. Was Grubhub I think. Nothing to do with this restaurant but I recieve a tortilla instead of the bread that usually comes with it. I wouldn't mind but I wasn't informed about this and it cost me $40. A little upsetting but the food is good
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered a chicken gyro plate . It comes with salad , hummus and bread . Chicken and rice was ok . Chicken was a bit dry and very salty but the hummus was really good . I loved it . I will go back to try another dish .
google avatar

Gabby A.

Yelp
Good food, nice service. My friend and I stopped by for a Saturday lunch, and I got a lamb burger with a soda--filling, tasty food. Nice location on the corner of 18th and Castro
google avatar

Yelp
Falafel wrap was okay tasting but stone cold. Guess they don't heat the falafel before they assemble the wrap.

Yelp
So we all know the best GYROS / Kurdish food ,can be found in the Castro . Did you know they did Catering too? Exactly!! ...: I didn't. Know either. I am having a project done at my house. I wanted to provide lunch for the crew . I called Gyro Express asked what my options were . It was so simple they asked how many people. What foods I had in mind.. then bam this amazing feast for my crew was being served! My crew was so happy! Not only does the food taste great it's ridiculously healthy. So much more healthy than tacos or pizza. Next time you need to feed a large group definitely reach out to Gyro Express.
google avatar

Dana J.

Yelp
Ordered what should be a standard for a place like this for delivery. Delivery was fine. A sampler with a side of dolmas and a side of babaganoush. Flavorless, ALL of it. The gluten-free pita tastes like pulled wallpaper from Grandma's old dining room. Dolmas were hard like they had been frozen previously and not well heated. Worse yet, I awoke the next morning with projectile diarrhea. The next time you are due for a colonoscopy, you might want to try this place for the colon cleanse the day before. Good grief.

Yelp
They got rid of honey tahini. A new guy is there doing amazing things. This a good street food for the masses.

Yelp
This restaurant is getting a rare five stars. Chicken souvlaki plate was very good. There could have been a bit less fat, but the flavor was absolutely amazing. But what guaranteed the five stars was the Greek soup. The sign said yogurt-based. It was perfect. Lean white meat chicken shredz. Lemony flavor. Some vegetables. And a fresh lemon wedge on the side. Service was friendly. I ate at the counter by the main window. Fantastic place to look out over Castro and 18th street, but the pathetic trashy people that stand on the street corner and smoke might ruin your experience. I've walked past this restaurant for years, and never managed to eat here. First time today, and I'm glad I did.

Yelp
Food is always solid, good, and plentiful! We ordered food and they forgot 2 items. When I called - they had it delivered ASAP and added dessert. The service was great!!

Mike T.

Yelp
Did this place change ownership? I was there yesterday around 5 pm and didn't see any of the regular workers. I've eaten there many times over the past few years, but this time the experience was disappointing. I ordered my usual, the chicken kebab platter, and it wasn't as good and the portions were smaller. I probably won't be going back.

Yelp
Always love eating here. Great taste, friendly service and great location on the corner of 18th and Castro. Area is clean except occasionally some dishes from recent patrons but this crew is on top of it and they aren't left for long. The food is delicious and full of flavor and the music is played at a good level. I wish I got out more often because this is one of my fav places.

Yelp
I came here when seeing a movie at the Castro theater. It is a short walk from the Castro theater and Castro Muni exit. I walked in and was greeted. You order then get a number and pick a table then one of the waitresses bring your food for you. I also got a soda to drink from the fridge. I got the #19 Beef and Lamb plate that comes with a small salad, rice, pita, hummus and tzatziki sauce. The pita and hummus was actually my favorite part. The pita was warm and felt fresh baked and the hummus was really tasty. It had a seasoning on top, I would guess cumin, which gave it an added flavor. The meat was good not great. I added a little table salt for flavor and used the tzatziki on it. The rice was good, it had a few chick peas in it. The salad was the weakest part. It had some chunks of tomato too big and needed something extra. Overall it was a good quick and filling meal. I probably would try other places first if I was in the area again but I would go back it I wanted Mediterranean food.

Chris V.

Yelp
We ordered the lentil soup. It had absolutely no flavor. When I got to the bottom of my dish, I found small stones in it. I pointed this out to the manager and he gave us a free baklava. Unfortunately the same night of my wife and I got indigestion from the food. The restaurant was pretty cold since they left the lodge, windows and doors open. I guess we're not going there again.

Yelp
Gyro Xpress is awesome! The service is wonderful: the servers are super friendly! The food is excellent! Ambiance is great! Highly recommended!

Yelp
TLDR; Awful food, UNSAFE DINING AREA! Spitting and assault - Might as well start with the biggest impression. Witnessed a clearly deranged man walk in and start to hassle 2 customers who were sitting down. He threatened to spit on them when they wouldn't talk to him. When I told the man behind the counter this was happening and to call the cops, he just stared and did nothing. The man started spitting at the table (remember this is a restaurant where food is served!) and the two customers were clearly super uncomfortable and they were trapped in a corner by the man. I couldn't believe the shop owner was just standing by and I immediately changed my order to To-Go and got out of there. The cops later showed up there. I'll never go back. Food was a mess - When I did get home I couldn't even finish the Lamb Burger I had ordered. It was so sloppily made and flavorless. The only good thing was the hot sauce on the side which I can find at any number of places.

Yelp
My friends I ate here and all get sick right afterwards. Someone's not washing vegetables or their hands. I'll be staying far away from this place

Yelp
Great portions for the money!! Would definitely recommend it for a late night bite. I got the Gyro.

Yelp
Really bad quality! Had chicken wrap was like day old! Not going there again. Thanks

Yelp
I went to Gyro express because they were still open when I got around to wanting food. I'll come back because the food was good as was the people watching. I had a Gyro and a coke. The gyro was better than most, Good flavors! Friendly service, open late, a nice combo.

Yelp
This is the place to go to in the Castro District if you want some Mediterranean cuisine. From a fun night in the Castro District, spending time with friends, or just to curve your hunger this restaurant has a variety of food on the menu. In today's review, I will explain my experience about this place. Pros: - Severs are attentive to address your needs - Get a quick bite after a night out in Castro. Cons: - This place needs improvement in cleanliness in all aspects! - Dining hall - The chef who cooks the food. - The person who prepares/bags the meal for customers. Today I ate a Gyro, finding a clump of hair inside. I'm shocked bc I never had any problems here. I was glad to get an employee's attention bc I lost my appetite. I notice employee's dont pick up or clean the tables after customer's leave. Please be sanitary bc I am a foodie blogger, I dont want to ruin a S.F. restaurant's history/reputation.

Yelp
Terrible service. Rude employees. They don't pay attention to orders. This place is not worth the trouble to go to.

Yelp
Since COVID hit us last year all restaurants were closed so i couldn't try anything New until now and i was so looking forward to this kind of food but the guy wearing all black wasn't very nice to me at first. When i got here was only 2 people here eating and was nice that everything was cooked fresh and hot and they cooked as people ordering and that's great because you know your food is coming hot... So let's get started i actually went here on Yelp see the food and what people had to say about it? Well lots of five stars and few 2 stars and people experiences they had here. The picture i took of the guy who was wearing all black i was asking him questions about the food and told him i have hard time speaking now so i said i took pictures of what i wanted he said ok. He did make some rude comments and got upset because i asked one too many questions was asking is the yogurt & the hummus homemade? He said yes i said can i have a simple i might not like it and don't wanted on my dish he got mad when he gave it to me and some dropped on the table and he put his hand to his face That really pissed me off and told him it was my 1st time 2nd people are going asked questions about your food so don't be rude to them especially to someone who is disabled. I told him can not eat lamb I'm allergic he said the beef and lamb are together so i asked for chicken only just with the rice and the salad no Greek yogurt or hummus. It took 20 minutes and you know it's cooked hot and fresh i also ordered fries for a snack and they were really good had garlic and season spices on them and temperature hot and the food looked good but the 2 thing i didn't like was he said would give me extra rice and pita bread and was none. I would definitely come back but like i said the man in the picture if you are a manager or a owner you really need training on "CUSTOMER SERVICE" So only given 4 starts over all if i had better experience you be getting a 5 star now. Oh when i ordered my fries and was getting a Diet Coke was asking the price because i couldn't see it up on the wall menu so im guessing he felt bad by being RUDE to me earlier so he gave me a FREE Diet coke i was suprised and said thank you. I definitely will come back now that i know the food is good but will get extra Chicken because 2 is not enough on the plate order especially when i have to be Sharing with my cat Tiger lol. Oh they serving Alcohol and desserts here and bottles of sanitizers on the table and have tables outside eating if you don't wanted eat inside. Thanks for Reading my Review ~Lizzie~ :)

Ben S.

Yelp
This restaurant has gone way downhill since they lost competition nearby. Ever gone here late night? Smells like Pine Sol and the employees only care about ringing up transactions and chatting with each other. Can't wait until they are done chatting with each other? Expect a loud clap and "hey buddy order now!" Food served is ice cold.
google avatar

Ali M.

Yelp
I used them for catering at my office and it was a huge hit. I got three different types of gyros - chicken, beef/lamb, and falafel and a side of baklava. The gyros went super fast as people went back for seconds! It was also nice when I ordered that they give the option to cut them in half so people can mix and match the gyros they want to try. I'd definitely order from here again. Thank you!
google avatar

Daf G.

Yelp
Don't understand the bad reviews. This place is my go to gyro delivery spot. I recommend the chicken and beef gyros + the fries
google avatar

Joaquin G.

Yelp
Last two time the food has gotten me sick . Never had this problem before so no more food for me from there.
google avatar

Claudia B.

Yelp
I recommend this place the shawrma is the best I ordered a chicken Greek burrito and I loved it the meat was so juicy and lovely the pita was fresh done at the spot. Definitely a good recommendation late night option. It was light and delicious.
google avatar

Mr. B.

Yelp
Solid food at a reasonable price. And they are always super nice with friendly service. One of my chicken skewers fell off my plate and they remade it for me like champs.
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
I had the traditional Gyro - it was a really good sandwich made authentically on authentic vertical spit. Bread was warmed and fresh. Very good hot sauce and salad fixings (on the sandwich). It's a moist and tasty combination of flavors ! Very well done.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Clean space with windows opened for social distancing. Greek Salad with lamb gyro is keto friendly (manager confirmed ) and delicious (5/5) Friend ordered kebab sandwich and gave it 3/5. And they have a clean bathroom open to customers--always a god(dess)send in SF!
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
This is a great space -- very clean and airy. And one of the first to really take advantage of pleasant outdoor seating during COVID. And a nice restroom that's always spotless. Good size to the portions. I tend to go for the gyros platter but have recently been more drawn to the lamb burger (huge) and the gyros pita sandwich. The seasoned fries are great and the spicy sauce is not kidding about the spiciness. My buddy always get the salad with gyros meat -- he's keto. I haven't been as blown away by the falafel as by the gyros meat, but it's certainly good. So many places have failed to thrive in this space, so part of why I come back again and again is to do research. I never went to the other things (although the Korean BBQ tempted.)
google avatar

Tyler R.

Yelp
Before I even explain the flavor of the fries the amount of garlic at the bottom of the basket shows how DELICIOUS these Garlic fries were. They were extremely fresh and crispy. They even gave us a complimentary dessert of Baklava. Customer service was super friendly and very attentive. Highly recommend checking them out
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Bad neighbors and mediocre food. Parklets aren't kept up and are constantly filthy which attracts vermin. If the staff doesn't even care about keeping up the outside of the restaurant, like, literally the first thing you see, can you imagine the state of the kitchen? Yuck. Its so unfortunate because the location really deserves a tenant who cares about the neighborhood. Sadly in addition to the cleanliness issue the food isn't that great. Its the kind of place you stumble into after a few drinks. Bland flavor and low quality ingredients. I'd love to see this place improve, it seems like the unifying factor in these issues is just that the staff doesn't care? Maybe with staffing changes the cleanliness of the restaurant will improve as will the food quality.
google avatar

Ell B.

Yelp
Sad waste of money. I think this place depends on the extremely drunk to stay alive. The gyro I got was soggy, flavorless and one of the worse I've had in years. Sorry to be so harsh but it was that bad and the customer service didn't help. It was like pulling teeth to order and then confirm that it was done and I could wait for my food. Shockingly bad....
