Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ opens near Union Square | Eater Denver

"A new Japanese yakiniku (grilled barbecue) restaurant has opened in the Union Station neighborhood, occupying about 3,000 square feet at Union Denver alongside the new Whole Foods Market and marking the brand’s first location in downtown Denver. Part of a worldwide chain with hundreds of locations across the U.S. and roughly 700 restaurants globally, the restaurant offers a tabletop grilling experience where diners cook proteins over a grill at the center of every table. Signature items include Harami skirt steak in a miso marinade and certified Angus kalbi short ribs in a tare (sweet soy) marinade; the menu also features noodle bowls, rice dishes, vegetable options, pork dumplings, fried bacon chips, and Japanese fried chicken. Its name is pronounced GEW-KAH-KOO and means “horn of the bull” in Japanese. The restaurant is open nightly from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m." - Susan Stapleton

Google
On par with the quality of Gyu Kaku's in other locations. It might be overwhelming first time but it's actually good for a la carte if you're not too hungry. Wish i did try the AYCE thought. They have great drinks too. And this location has a very long happy hour! Green tea tiramisu is tasty too.

Went for our christmas meal. The food and atmosphere were amazing. Me and my wife took a christmas platter for two and shared a Kirin beer tower. Would highly recommend!!

Google
The only reason this place is so highly reviewed is because it's in downtown Denver, and there's nothing but transplants down there from everywhere in the Midwest. The black pepper chicken wings have no black pepper or any seasoning to be found. The most bland wings I've ever had. Miso soup, bland tastes like under seasoned water with seaweed and tofu in it. Pork dumplings bland. There's a REASON they're offering BOGO on these things because they can't sell them I'm assuming. Haven't gotten to the fried rice yet but I'm assuming it'll be more of the same. Thank you for the one single piece of beef fatty beef in the fried rice. Check the picture!! Avoid!!

Google
Gyu-Kaku is an amazing place for Japanese bbq. It’s definitely one of my go to spot now. The wagyu is so good and is a must try.

Google
I love this yakiniku spot. The food is quality and I’d recommend just getting the supreme all you can eat so you don’t have to worry about something you want not being included. Amazing spot for a date night or special occasion.

Not only is the food amazing, but the service is top tier. Juslen is one of the best servers I’ve ever had. 10/10 would recommend coming here!!

Google
Friendly staff and some delicious food and drinks. There are so many options so we got the all you can eat option. I think you get 90 minutes and you can order multiple meats or items per person at a time. A great spot for lunch or dinner. I am not the best at cooking my own meats so I do prefer places that cook for you. However the staff here was great with making sure we knew what to do to properly cook our foods. Now for my standard comments. This location is clean and well kept. Indoor seating is comfortable.

Yelp
We came here to order the holiday deals but encounter their all you can eat menu. What a deal! I'm all about that bbq buffet eating. The meat was delicious and the service was fast. The initial order took some time but it ramped up from there. Make sure your first order is enough. You should order the bacon bits. 100% worth. The place fills up real quick too. They take reservations but we were lucky and got a table, when we walked in. The staff were really nice and helpful. I snuck in an order for happy hour. Asahi beer is the best. The place looked great and the isle was open enough to allow traffic, easily. The decor is your normal Japanese style restaurant, clean and pretty. The only critique was parking. Unless you come during the free times then you are outside throwing coins in the meter. Just do 2 hours and go in. I highly recommend stopping by any of their locations. Great food and a fun experience.

Yelp
I would be willing to place my head on the chopping block that two words you will never hear said about this establishment is "I'm stuffed!" The portions are extremely small! Check out the calamari picture (I have placed one edamame on plate for size comparison. ) On the ambiance of restaurant it is basically plain and if the restaurant has decided to have bathroom accommodations that are not gender specific the restaurant staff needs to inspect and insure the bathrooms are clean. After neaten it up for my use behind the male stranger my appetite took a dip. Also we are all touching on laminated menu sheets that anybody and everybody have already handled! Maybe restaurant should have warm wet towels along with those hot grills. Just a thought as you are the handling your food. Lastly the service. We had adequate service by Tamir after being handed off to him by another server. Not sure why they changed servers so our first few minutes with Tamir were awkward for a restaurant experience. Overall I did not have the experience that makes me want to return or recommend. This restaurant may do fine with first time customers however only certain people will make this a regular spot!

Yelp
We celebrated a birthday at this location last night. We had a fun dinner, but management here was unnecessarily unkind. We had a table for 6 and one of our friends was vegetarian with loads of self-managed food restrictions. Because the rest of the table was doing the all you can eat for $54/ea, she too was forced to pay $54 for broccoli and mushrooms. This felt very unreasonable and quite frankly was embarrassing. The manager didn't even come by to explain his decision. Good was good otherwise. We did have to ask that our waters be refilled 2-3 times each. We have been to the Cherry Creek location a few times and prefer it over this one. There's better, free parking and the facility is more open and feels more attentive. Lastly, don't be fooled by "old pricing" (as described by the manager later on) on the website. The base price for AYCE is $54, not $45 like you might find online. A restaurant that charges $54 a head shouldn't have "old pricing" on their website. In the end we agreed, we won't be back to this location.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
Sometimes we like to come here for our team Christmas party and absolutely love it every time. We all choose the AYCE option since everyone at the table has to choose the same thing. There is an option for dessert and this time around we chose s'mores which was both fun and delicious. The atmosphere in the place is typically upbeat but not so overpowering you can't hear one another. Definitely would recommend for big parties or a date night out!

Yelp
What a fantastic meal and experience! The staff were super accommodating and very knowledgable about the menu. I felt very taken care of and it was a quality meal. Every item we ordered was delicious. A lot of the meat cuts didn't even need sauce cause they were so good on their own. The A5 waygu kalbi short rib was a standout for me and the mochi dessert was dairy free (bonus!) and offered unique flavor options that I devoured. The passion fruit one is to die for. Their spicy tuna volcano was an excellent appy with unpredictable textures and flavor. Highly recommend. Will defiantly be heading back. The location was also well lit and cozy having your own booth and privacy.

Yelp
Love Gyu-Kaku for a tasty / quick / reasonably priced to-go lunch. Inconveniently located in Cherry Creek (?), the name of the restaurant means "horn of the bull." (Go figure). And it claims to give you "premium cooked meats over a flaming smokeless grill." For me? I always order the Gyu-Combo of Yakishabu thinly sliced/marinated beef with shaved cabbage and maybe a bit of jalapeños over excellent rice, accompanied by a respectable salad and bowl of miso soup=way more than enough for $15. A deal and a half. Give them try. You're gonna love em. Sayonara, David

Yelp
Another amazing dinner! Came here after picking up my sister from the airport and we were starving. Unfortunately, we didn't make a reservation but luckily it wasn't too crowded with around half the place being full. Since it was late on Thursday night and were seating immediately. Since it was just the two of us, we decided to do al la carte. We ordered, salad, fired rice, gyoza, two meats and garlic shrimp. It was the perfect amount for around $60. Our waitress, Justen, was amazing! She was on top of our orders (no sesame oil due to an allergy) and made sure all of the food was okay for us to consume. Such a positive attitude, and our drinks were always filled. I would be happy to come back again.

Lizz B.

Yelp
Alex was great! Super friendly and gave us the best recommendations. I love Gyu-kaku and definitely will be coming back

Yelp
We've returned to this place multiple times, including on Christmas Day! Great ambiance with the ability to cook your food in front of you, servers are attentive and come by often to check in and bring courses. Great tasting food and good prices during happy hour/lunch.

Yelp
Great Japanese bbq in Denver! We showed up on January 1st and it was very busy so we made a reservation for the next day. We got the chefs choice which is for 2 people but was satisfying for 3 people. We also got the tofu soup as an extra entree which was just enough food for all of us. The meats offered in the set menu were all very delicious and the dipping sauces offered made it even better. Workers were very kind and the restaurant is clean. There are vents lining the grill to prevent smoke everywhere and I didn't end up leaving smelling like meat like I do at many other bbq restaurants! Would come back!

Yelp
Stopped in a few weeks ago to celebrate a friend's birthday. This is not somewhere to go if you want to sit all together at one table with a large party, you will likely be split into 2 next to each other because each needs a grill. Not a big deal and makes sense but was a bit annoying. We did one of the set menus and while I do think it was a lot of food and we left full and happy, it was pretty expensive for having to cook it yourself. Everything was really good, the only thing I thought was a bit mediocre was the cheese fondue for the broccoli and the dessert fondue. They came in a tiny aluminum container that you put on the grill to melt, but nothing seemed to really melt all the way through that way. It was also a really small amount and just seemed like a bit of a lazy presentation and execution for those items, and did not look appetizing. Everything else was good, the meat had great flavors and the bibimbap style rice was delicious. I can see us returning for a special date night or party with friends as it is a fun time, but probably not for just random dinners when we want to get out as I feel you can get a more rounded full meal that isn't just focused around small cuts of meat for less without having to cook it yourself elsewhere. You're paying for the unique experience here, but it is tasty.

Yelp
I took a big group, part of a Christmas experience gift before a show. 6 of us, you almost certainly need to schedule a reservation on a weekend night. What a great menu and great service. Definitely upgrade to the fried rice!! Nummy num! Quite a few courses for the experience! Do not plan on less than 90 minutes, we cut it too closely and were not able to have the s'mores dessert. We selected the meals for 2, and ordered 3x. The beef was amazing and fun to cook ourselves! Ask the servers for recommendations, and the name of the meat as you cook! So much food and fun. You will not regret, pricey but worth it!

Yelp
Great food, and excellent service (I think we had Hamiko)! We got the premium holiday meal for 2 and it was amazing. Quality meat, and very quick. Loved it all

Yelp
First just want to give a shout out to our awesome server, Jason. Super friendly, attentive, and had great recommendations. We ordered A La Carte. Thankfully we were not super hungry, but if you come in with a big appetite, I would recommend just doing the AYCE, since the A La Carte portions are not very big. I guess it also depends on what you want to order, since the AYCE has different tiers. The Harami Skirt Steak was very delicious and the standout for us. I would come back just for that dish alone. We were surprised by the vegetables (specifically the broccoli and asparagus). For the vegetables, they put a good amount of butter and seasoning in the tin foil, and it turns out so tasty. With that said, if you are ordering the veggies to try to be healthy, consider asking for only a little bit of butter since they do put a lot. But man it is so good!!! The Beef Tongue was standard and what you would expect. Though, it did pair very well with the Scallion Sauce. The Scallion Sauce is really good in general and probably pairs well with most things, so I recommend ordering one of those too. The Spicy Shrimp was actually spicy which was really nice. So many places call things spicy but they never are. Definitely recommend checking out this place, but consider making a reservation since they can get really busy (at least on the weekends when we went).

Yelp

Yelp
First time at Gyu-Kaku and we had a big table of 11 people. Service was great, I think our servers name was Alex? Very attentive and friendly. The portions are smaller than we thought but the quality of the meat was really good. The only thing I would complain about is because we had such a big group and had large orders, the servers would sometimes forget our meats. Other than that, this place is amazing.
google avatar

Tori B.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times, and each time has been amazing. Tonight was no different. We had a larger party (7 people) and everyone was totally accommodated and well taken care of. Our server, Himiko, was an absolute superstar! Very on top of the whole table, kept food coming in a timely manner, and checked in with everyone to make sure drinks were full. I'm normally terrible with names, but wow wow wow!! Thank you for making our big night out so much better!

willy s. w.

Yelp
Outstanding experience, food was fantastic. Alex our server was top notch he practically ran to bring our food and drinks on initial order and each re-order. He was very helpful describing each protein and how to cook them. Highly recommend
google avatar

Kendall L.

Yelp
It's a novelty franchise restaurant. The food wasn't bad, the salad had hard boiled eggs that came in a bag, not cooked in house. The beef was good for sure, good marinades. Service was basic, fine. It's like the Cheesecake Factory or Asian food, you get a stack of menus. I prefer a chef to make me perfect food, the tuna volcano and bibimbap both came from the kitchen and were great. The best part of the experience was burning chopstick wrappers, napkins, and the meat we couldn't finish on the grill. They should give you non-food items to throw on the grill, maybe stuff that burns different colors, or sparkles. The matcha tiramisu was dry and not great. Ultimately, you can get a much better meal at a traditional place for the same amount or less.

Connor J.

Yelp
If I could give Alex 7 stars I would. This guy knew exactly what to do and all I had to do was point at a general location on the menu. Absolute best server I have met in years. Would recommend this place just because of Alex. We WILL BE BACK. Thank you!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
First time here, the restaurant is clean and a nice ambiance! Music was up beat but not too loud, very nice, Seth was our server and he was phenomenal! We asked a lot of questions and he had not problem giving amazing suggestions and tips for enjoying our meal! The food is Exceptional!!! All of the choices that you get Omgosh! We got the premium course and it was more than enough to try for our first time! My meats were both fresh and flavorful, we tried the bistro hanger steak per Seth's suggestion, and man that was so good! Taro Beef in the sweet soy tare, pork belly shio and spicy pork (8.5/10 on spice ) and so much more. A must try!

Vivian V.

Yelp
Probably THE BEST Japanese food I've ever had!!!jason was so professional and helpful!! Cannot recommend this place enough! 10 out of 10!
google avatar

Brandon G.

Yelp
The food is so good here! I keep coming back and Japanese bbq never disappoints. The service that Himiko gave was exceptional. Definitely will keep coming back.
google avatar

Maxwell B.

Yelp
I just want to start by saying Seth was absolutely amazing and went above and beyond to make sure all of our needs were heard. We had a hefty squad of 20 people and he made sure everybody was seen and heard. From start to finish we never waited for any orders and got everything we wanted promptly.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
We are never disappointed when we come here! Whether we come as a group or just a quiet date night we will always come back. Alex, our server, was super helpful in his suggestions and made sure we had everything we needed. We did the a la carte option and chose the meats we wanted. Must try!
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
This place is very tasty, and has great vibes. Service is average, not the best and not the worst, unless you have a newer server.
google avatar

Shin M.

Yelp
My friends and I got the meat variety for 3 ($40/person) and then also a side of kobe beef. I thought the kobe was just ok. It came with "premium" dippin sauce lol The meat variety was alright. I really liked the thick meat one where you cooked it all at once and had to use scissors to chop it up. That was tasty. All the other ones tasted similar and were meh to me. The garlic mushrooms were tasteless to me. Some of the meats would have been handy to have a knife or scissors to eat... so we had to ask for one since chopsticks don't cut meats well... Would have been nice for them to explain what each dish was and which sauce went best with each one. Smores was just OK. we had to ask for more chocolate and the graham crackers were plain. Similar to my last review, I still giggled that S'mores are served at a Japanese restaurant. Interior is nice and nicely decorated. Employees are nice. Honestly I will look elsewhere when I'm craving Japanese bbq.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
The food and experience here is always a lot of fun. They have more "group" meals and makes the ordering process easier on the customer. I personally think this is a better deal than the all you can eat. I always enjoy going here but have to know what to expect with service. It is always very slow to start off with ordering and getting drinks but once your food starts to come, it is a rapid fire until the end. The best part is the s'mores at the end! Always a fun group activity!
google avatar

Mattie Y.

Yelp
I love this place, but I also love Korean and Japanese BBQ. I'd recommend bringing friends and either doing AYCE (all you can eat) or sharing one of BBQ specials that comes with a variety of meat and appetizers. This place gets busy, especially on weekends, so I'd recommend reservations, especially for larger parties. My favorite drink is the frozen berry Sangria. Depending on staffing, you may need to wait a little longer for food. I think it's worth it.

Andrew R.

Yelp
The food here is incredible. The sheer amount of meat is the stuff of legends. And all of it is so so so good. Our server was Jason and he was the best. Always around when you needed assistance and so very kind and funny. So great. The ambiance is casual and cozy. Totally wasn't expecting that. Comfortable seats and the heat from the grill is super pleasant. Had an awesome time!

Yelp
Our server Seth was awesome. Great food, great service. Seth explained the menu and continuously checked in with us. He made sure our experience was top notch. The food was great. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
The location was near our hotel. Friendly staff. Food was really good. Portion is just right. Price is very affordable b

David R.

Yelp
The restaurant was fantastic, and I really enjoyed my experience. Alex was absolutely perfect and made the visit even better. Appreciate everything
google avatar

Rin L.

Yelp
The ambiance was really nice, small and cozy. The portion of the foods were kind of small but there was a variety number of dishes in the combo that help fill our stomach. Everything was seasoned and flavorful. The only complain I had about the foods was its either too salty or too sweet. Service was kind of slow on a week day. But was really tentative. I would definitely come back to try the all you can eat menu.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
Gyu Kaku is making its way up on my list of bbq places as the Korean ones I've been to don't seem worth the price for the limited amounts of meat they offer. This was the first time we've been to this location (other one is in Cherry Creek) and I prefer this location since it's roomier and is overall brighter inside. We made a reservation at 12:15 just in case it happened to fill up for Saturday lunch but thankfully it wasn't an issue. We were seated pretty quickly and our server greeted us quickly and explained anything we needed. We got two premium ayce meals ($48 each) and ate probably over 10 plates of meat and a handful of veggie plates as well. They also have a happy hour from 12pm to 6:30pm so we got the gyu sushi and a cocktail and the bill came out to around $115. Service was great as they were quick to take our order, bring out meat, take dirty plates, etc. There was a huge group of 14 that came in while we were eating so that slowed them down a bit but they still made sure to be attentive while we were there! Highly recommend this place as it is something different you don't see everyday!

Tommy W.

Yelp
The food here was great. We had the family meal and it was a great amount of food for the four of us. The service was okay, it took a while for us to get some of the things that we asked for but it was kind of okay because we were cooking the food ourselves anyways so we at least had something to keep us busy. The ambiance was great too, it was nice and cosy in there, definitely not bad at all. One of the bathrooms was really disgusting though which was kind of disappointing.

Yelp
First time at a Japanese BBQ restaurant! My boyfriend and I stumbled across this spot heading to Whole Foods, and let me tell you we were not disappointed! The food, the atmosphere, and the service were top tier. If you see this spot don't hesitate to stop in! It was so fun! Our server was Jason and he did an outstanding job!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was amazing and so was the service! Alex, our server was extremely attentive and had some wonderful recommendations. Bistro and NY steak were delicious! The ice cream and s'mores = BONUS!

Samantha R.

Yelp
Went here for my 1 year wedding anniversary, the food was amazing, my server Tamir was incredibly attentive and funny! The day I went the atmosphere was really chill, and wasn't too busy! i even got to end my night with a S'more! Highly recommend, my husband and I will be back!

Morgan J.

Yelp
A great dining experience made possible by the diligent and attentive service of Himiko. I've had my eye on this kind of restaurant before and was glad I finally got to try it with a friend. They've ordered from the restaurant before and only had high praise for it and I'm glad to say the praise didn't disappoint. The food was great, plenty of variety, and even when picking the meat lovers option, it l still provided a balanced course. (Don't miss out if their salads). To top it off Himiko was a lovely server who was very informative and attentive. If it's your first time at Gyu-Kaku, I'd recommend her table.

Yelp
I couldn't wait to get back to our room to write this review. We are visiting Denver for a short family vacay and decided to spend our last night as a date night for our anniversary. I had saw a good review when looking for accommodations because this was literally across the street. We decided to make a reservation and try it. It did not disappoint! We had never experienced the Japanese BBQ or even Korean BBQ and we live in the Bay Area, CA. I know...I know. Why Denver? I can't answer that but I'm glad this was our first experience. Here goes the ratings. Manager and staff were amazing! Shout out to Juslen. Her recommendations were on point and everything we tried was amazing. She was so personable and friendly. Staff was a 10 out of 10!!! Filet Mignon was 10/10. Hirami Skirt Steak 10/10. Kalbi Short Rib (sweet soy) 10/10. Premium Sirloin 11/10!! Gyoza 10/10. Fried cheese wontons 9/10. Fried bacon Chips 10/10 (my fav). Garlic fried rice had garlic slivers and strings of sautéed onion which made it bold and delicious. If you don't like onion and garlic like me you may not like it as much. I give it an 11/10!!! So good. They have a summer special that is fried Oreos with chocolate and whip. Oreos were tasty. I give them 8/10. Now to go back home and hope the Bay Area's Japanese bbq restaurants can hold up to my new expectations. We will be on a search and when we make it back to Denver, this will be the first stop! Thank you for being so great! It def made up for the disappointing breakfast earlier in the day.

Yelp
Himiko, our server was so hospitable and accommodating and made our experience memorable for my birthday. We were really impressed by the food - our favorite was the zucchini and kalbi beef. We also loved the Taiyaki with green tea ice cream. We will definitely be coming back again!

Christopher A.

Yelp
Jason was awesome and super helpful and kind. The food was all really good as well especially the beef.

Yelp

Yelp
Juslen was amazing!!! The service was so great! One of my best experiences I have had. She was extremely attentive and kind! Thank you so much Juslen and team!

Yelp
Visited the Denver Union Station location and was fortunate to have Alex as our server. He was very friendly, attentive, fast paced and just amazing to have taking care of us. Our food was delicious, Alex's recommendations were well received and enjoyed! Thank you for making our visit to Denver extra special!

Yelp
Gyu-Kaku is absolutely one of my favorite dining experiences, period. I love the different selections, marinades, and the lunch special is where it's at. If you go with a group, it's even better, because you can try even more meats and sides. Just be prepared to be super full and super happy after your dining experience. I deducted a star for the dirty plates upon seating and asking for clean ware. But, outside of that, it was fun. I recommend trying the garlic cabbage salad as a side to go with your meats! It's tangy, crunchy, and fresh! It adds a beautiful dimension!
