Gyu-Kaku Will Bring Its Japanese Barbecue to a Fourth Houston Location | Eater Houston

"Opening soon at 7748 Cypress Creek Parkway, this popular Japanese yakiniku-style barbecue chain is rolling out its fourth Houston-area location. Patrons grill marinated short ribs, filet mignon, shrimp and other proteins right at the table, and the menu features meaty all-you-can-eat and prix-fixe options alongside items like tempura, ramen, garlic noodles and the chain’s signature DIY s’mores. Buckets of beer, cocktails and sake samplers are available to pair with the grilled meats. The brand first arrived in Houston in 2014 (Midtown) and has since expanded to the Memorial area and Sugar Land; no official opening date for this outpost has been announced." - Amy McCarthy

Google
This was my 1st time eating here and I really enjoyed the items I chose! I ordered 2 items from the "Small Plates" section of the menu ( Calamari & Miso Chili Wings-5). Both of these were really yummy. I also added the Beef Sokiyaki Bibimheap and it was fantastic! This was recommended by our server Alejandra. We had exceptional service and she was so helpful with answering all our questions. I highly recommend this place. Can't wait to come back!

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ delivers an exceptional dining experience from start to finish. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm, modern, and inviting—perfect for a date night, a group dinner, or simply enjoying a unique and interactive meal. The concept of grilling your own meats at the table is not only fun but incredibly satisfying. The quality of the meat is outstanding: tender, flavorful, and perfectly marinated. Every cut we tried—from the short ribs to the premium beef selections—was fresh and full of rich, authentic Japanese BBQ flavor. The sauces and seasonings elevate everything, and you can truly taste the attention to detail in every bite. The menu offers an excellent variety beyond meats as well. The appetizers, rice dishes, and sides are thoughtfully prepared and pair perfectly with the BBQ experience. Everything arrives beautifully presented and at just the right pace, allowing you to enjoy the meal without feeling rushed. Service deserves special recognition. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, always ready to explain the menu, recommend dishes, or help with the grilling process. You genuinely feel welcomed and well taken care of throughout your visit. Overall, Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ stands out for its quality, consistency, and overall experience. It’s a place where great food, great service, and a fun atmosphere come together seamlessly. Highly recommended, and definitely a spot I’ll be returning to again and again.

Google
I love coming to Gyu-Kaku. The service and food is amazing! It is the best japanese bbq place for us. We have been to all the locations in Houston and this is the best one. We will continue to be loyal customers to the Cypress location. The variety is amazing as well and all meats are tasty as well as appetizers and sides. I love it!! Our server Huy was great! So attentive and kind. ❤️

Cameron D.

Google
We had an incredible experience here. The food was excellent, the atmosphere felt welcoming. Our server Daniel was the highlight of the night with great recommendations and genuinely attentive service. Easily a five star spot we’ll be returning to.

Google
So goooood. Waiter was nice and attentive, unfortunately I forgot his name. Food was good, I wish meat portions were slightly bigger though. Garlic fried rice, one of the best things I've ever taste! Clean restaurant.

Patra T.

Google
Best Japanese BBQ ever! Our server Daniel needs a raise. He was extremely attentive. He kept our drinks filled and grill prepped. He even reminded us of cooking times for all our options. Definitely give this place a try for your next meal. It's worth every penny! They even have amazing pricing for lunch. The premium menu is even cheaper for kids and seniors. Perfect for weekday and weekend outings!!

Autumn P.

Google
Roy was very attentive and helped us choose among the many options for a great first experience at Gyu-Kaku. I also loved the interior design with private booths. My only suggestion for management is to have more romantic ambient music options… we had upbeat techno/dance/club music on our visit which was for our 26th anniversary so something a little more chill would have been nice too. Overall, really enjoyed our visit!

Crystal B

Google
If you love Japanese BBQ, this is the place! The meat was fresh, tender and flavorful. Our waiter Roy was kind and efficient. The sides are excellent and well seasoned. Must try!

Laurie T.

Yelp
Food was really good! We appreciated our server Daniel who gave us a few recs on what to get and was super friendly. Very good service overall~

Heather C.

Yelp
The food was good. But the entire restaurant needs to be cleaned and cared for..... How is this place still open?
google avatar

Thea W.

Yelp
Our server Randy was absolutely amazing. We came during peak hours so items took awhile to come out.... But Randy tool great care of us and did his absolute best! 10/10 deserves a promotion. All of the food is delish, the cocktails with Sake are amazing and even the sides are great. I would definitely recommend coming on out!

Yelp
Went here today for an early dinner wasn't that busy maybe two. Waited 20 minutes opened the door two or three times just to hear them do their little saying , but nobody came to the front. Friendly young guy walks up and says how can I help you obviously a table for two he says right this way and then stops. I see six tables filled with empty dishes. He pauses and says it's gonna be five minutes and I got five minutes or 45 minutes because I've already waited forever and you guys aren't even that busy. What do you guys even do here? No wonder my wife never wants to come here with me service is just as important as good food and you are lacking on one very important one. I don't think I'll be back for quite some time.

Yelp
The service, as usual, was fantastic and our usual items were delicious! The place is clean, not crowded, good calm music as ambience and service was awesome as normal. We ordered Kalbi, pork belly, hanger steak, shabu beef, rib, spicy pork was SOOO yummy, tender and high quality. Our all time faves and highly recommend if this is your first time, definitely get the Bistro Hanger steak, Spicy pork and Angus Beef ribs; very tender, sooo juicy and good. Now onto the 4 stars:/ ...this time i decided to order a new appetizer, which happens to be one of my favorite Japanese foods... takoyaki. The flavour, sauces, bonito flakes, etc was good, but the chunks of octopus inside were like eating a piece of tire rubber :( after my 2nd takoyaki, i really had to open the rest and just take the octopus out to continue to eat it. I still ate them because it was good BUT the pieces of octopus were a no. I will say, this takoyaki will NOT be a reason for me to not be back because truly everything else was spot on as usual, but yea, I just will continue to get the spicy edamame (to die for) , the wings or the addictive cucumber salad (because it is), instead of takoyaki.

Yelp
We frequent this place pretty often and really enjoy the food. We have never had to wait to be seated and we have come during the week days and on the weekend. The food is great. This time around we got the Chefs Favorite 2, the spicy miso garlic butter, matcha tiramisu, and the chocolate lava cake. It was delicious. The spicy miso butter dip is a great add on as a dip for your meats. It's not actually spicy but it's full of flavor. Ironically the worst thing on the menu is the miso soup. It's the only portion of the meal we pass on each time. It's not as flavorful as we would like. If you have young kids it's a challenge to seat them. There are no high chairs. The booster seats are uncomfortable, don't reach the table well, and are unstable, so keep that in mind. Overall this is definitely our go to Korean BBq spot in the neighborhood.

Aaron H.

Yelp
The food was exquisite giving me an overflowing experience of flavor. Also the vibe of the place is really nice and aesthetic with good customer service, providing me a wonderful experience. Especially my guy Huy who was an amazing waiter, making it more delightful of a time.

Yelp
I gave 4 stars only because of the low quantity of food for the price that was paid. Except that I love their food, especially the garlic rice and their garlic noodles. They have BBQ options as well and it's mostly great for large groups. Their ambience is perfect with dim lights. Just make sure to bring a jacket because it does get chilly once the burner is turned off. The people were friendly and the customer service was good. My favorite place to go with my mom.

Andres R.

Yelp
The food was great and Daniel provided great service will be coming back 10/10. All the meat was fresh and the beets tasted great.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Ordered uber eats. Paid for extra sauces to go with the noodles. Received absolutely no sauce. Now I just have dry noodles. I could've made this at home. Didnt receive plastic wear absolutely nothing. I haven't had an experience this poor in a while.
google avatar

Griffin N.

Yelp
Great food and service from Daniel. We shared the meal for three people. We really enjoyed the skirt steak.
google avatar

Juan H.

Yelp
My wife and I went here for our Anniversary. It was a Friday Night. Not too busy, which was a surprise for a Friday Evening. We were seating at a good table with some privacy, which we appreciated. We ordered from their Valentine's Day menu. It was a special for 2 people. Although the food was tasty, we could have used a bit more protein items. We received 4 strips of 3 different kinds of beef. 4 shrimps and 4 pieces of chicken. As I said, it was tasty, but we could have had a bit more. All in all, it was a good experience. The price was sort of high for the amount of food we received. It is something we would do again, just not very often. A big plus was the wait staff they were very nice and very attentive.
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
OK, so we need more of these across Houston! Everything, absolutely everything was delicious. It also is a fun and different dining activity. I went here for my birthday, and I believe they ordered a little bit of everything . So I can't say particularly which option we ordered. But the menu is huge and there's something for everyone. The garlic rice is my favorite and I'm sure I'm not alone in that lol. The zucchini probably was my second favorite but literally it is all good. Parking is ample at this location, pricing is reasonable. You pick your food and then cook it yourself in the middle of the table. They do have takeout, but I think they cook it for you due to food handling regs. If you're in the area it's a definite must try.
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
Fun night with good people in this place and made it more interesting with the goodness of the food! So much variety of meat and veggies and staff were so nice.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
Y'all, this place is amazing! Clean, well lit, friendly staff. The fresh grilled proteins and vegetables are always the best. Since you cook at the table, you can adjust to your personal preferences. Ie... beef med rare, veggies a lil charred, etc. The sauces are great also. For the shrimp, we like the garlic butter best. They also have a crunchy chili sauce that's delicious! We've had most of the veggies, including the mushroom melody and broccoli with cheese sauce, all fresh and tasty. Surprisingly enough, it's their signature rice that we've been ranting about since our first visit. SOOOO GOOOOD! Overall, this is one of my favorite places to eat!
google avatar

Telless C.

Yelp
Great service usually. Server seemed preoccupied almost like there isn't enough staff. Not a fan of the miso soup. Good sake.

Phuong L.

Yelp
This was by far one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. The service was terrible from start to finish, we weren't even given meat tongs to cook our food, when we asked for bowls they brought some togo cups and said use this instead because they were out of bowls, and they never bothered to change the dirty grill which made everything taste burnt. On top of that, a server nearly spilled a boiling hot soup on my baby, absolutely reckless and dangerous. To make matters worse, they tried to trick us into tipping extra even though gratuity was already included in the bill. Completely unprofessional, unsafe, and dishonest. I will never come back here and would strongly warn others to stay away.

Yelp
Roy was an amazing server! Attentive to detail and always checking up on us! It was a great experience to try Japanese BBQ for the first time! The environment was cozy and not too loud, so I could converse with my boyfriend comfortably. Would definitely recommend! (Would not give 5 stars though, because the mochi was stale.... But the meat was really good!)
google avatar

Sebastian M.

Yelp
My husband and I come here often and have always enjoyed the food. But we also come here to enjoy the service provided. Like today Jia helped us and she was phenomenal!!! She didn't skip a beat and did not forget anything we ordered. There have been times where we've eaten here and the service was not so great because perhaps the server had not much experience? But Jia is always on top!!! We've even been seated in her section when it's been full and we've never had an issue with anything!!! I know that being a server isn't always easy, especially when it's a full house at the establishment, but Jia has always been on her game!! Kudos to Jia and we hope her MGRs know she's great!!

Neil C.

Yelp
Food was delicious, but service was lacking. Waited 15 minutes for a drink refill, and another 10 minutes for the bill. I get it that there was only one server in our section, but we rarely were checked up on.
google avatar

Jalapeno C.

Yelp
Be prepared to cook your raw food. Ok, but would prefer other Japanese food. Grill broke 1/2 way thru, had to relocate to new table. Enjoyed spinach. Mostly dry meat lacking sauce, other than table soy. Constantly having to time cooking each piece of raw food. Table got very hot. And a/c was not working
google avatar

Grumpy G.

Yelp
Four of us went for lunch at 1pm on a rainy Saturday. Slow time, hardly anyone in the place, so we figured service should be good. Got some avocado salad and some sort of spicy tofu soup to share with at least two, and meats to grill and two orders of beef sukiyaki fried rice. The other two weren't interested in the tofu soup since my daughter got a single order of miso soup. The waiter brought 4 bowls anyway since he said it was sufficient. The salad was great and just enough for two people. The large bowl of soup was delicious but just enough for two. The rice ands meats were delicious too but the problem was portion size. Has to order a third rice bowl. Maybe we just didn't order enough but for the price I felt there should have been more. When the time came for dessert our original waiter must have been on a break since another waiter showed up. After we asked for a few minutes to think about it he disappeared for like 15 minutes. Remember I said there were maybe 2 other tables with customers - they were not busy. Two of us went looking for someone at 2 different times and there was no staff to be seen. We decided to skip the dessert and just get the bill when waiter #2 finally showed up. Overall - meh! Food tasted good but was small portions. Service did not make up for that. For the price, this is a pass. These guys are not serious.
google avatar

Vanezza S.

Yelp
I'd rate this place a solid 4.5, mainly because I find the price a little too high for the quantity of food you get. Portions are small but everything is very good! Great service. Great atmosphere. Restrooms need attention, but overall pretty clean. It does get a little chilly once the burner is turned off so bring a light sweater.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Took the family out for a night of Korean bbq. We had a delicious meal. Daniel was our server he was so nice and informative. Even told us about a special spicy rice that was delicious.
google avatar

Lorena R.

Yelp
We reserved for 20ppl for my daughter's graduation. They sat us promptly and we opted to get a few of the "Feast" option on the menu. OMG!! So much food and so delicious! All the meats were seasoned. The salad dressing was sooo good! Drinks were flowing and everyone had a great time showing off their cooking skill (or lack there of). Overall a wonderful experience
google avatar

Yelp
Having been to quite a few Gyu-Kaku restaurants in the past, this location is my favorite. I cant think of one negative or suggestion for improvement. Here are the things I really liked: the meats were good cuts, all of them. The sauces and marinades were perfect. The salad and other sides were all fresh and well presented. The server was amazing, working quickly but taking time to answer our questions. Our glasses were always full. The restaurant was beautifully appointed, clean, welcoming, and peaceful. This meal stands as one of the best I have ever had. I would absolutely go out of my way to visit this Gyu-Kaku and hope to return soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Off 1960 in the Commons center just before 249. You can order off a menu or go with one of the three AYCE menu options pictured below. We went with the $52 option. Overall it was a good experience. A couple of hiccups the first go around. If you're cooking the meat and vegetables yourself you wouldn't think it would take that long to bring it out. A bowl of plain white rice took even longer than the meat. The kitchen got better on out subsequent orders. The garlic fried rice was good. So was the spinach garlic the first time. The second one didn't have any garlic that I could find. The calamari was surprisingly tender grilled. The shrimp garlic was good also. All the beef we had was tender. Hangar steak, skirt steak, filet mignon. They have a dining rewards program also.
google avatar

Jacob T.

Yelp
Casual regular at gyukaku however that is only because of the meat and the marinades. But overall poor experience with the wait times, the lack of attentiveness of the server, and had a piece of metal wool and a hair in my food.
google avatar

Maritza R.

Yelp
We made a reservation and we're seated promptly. We only had to wait about 5 minutes. The service was good. The food was ok. I've been to several Gyu Kaku's across the US and this one was just ok. The meat didn't have enough marinate. The garlic noodles didn't have enough garlic and were soggy. They were actually flavorless. I think they put slices of garlic vs. using a garlic press. The spicy pork was not spicy it was more on the sweet side. The Gyu Kaku half salad was small. It was a personal size. The avocado salad was sad. The shrimp was cold and unseasoned. Last, the meat was very fatty. If I want fatty meat I can go to a KBBQ spot but I expect a lot more from Gyu. I probably won't be coming back to this location, because it seems like they skimp on the food. It was basic. Parking is not an issue they have a huge lot.
google avatar

Vicks N.

Yelp
Solid food and Great service as always ! Shout out to Huan who was super friendly and efficient !
google avatar

Erika V.

Yelp
First time going in with the family. It took a long time for the waiter to take our drinks. I noticed that the few waiters that were there were sitting in a back table just chatting. Food was okay, but I wouldn't go there again.
google avatar

Vena W.

Yelp
Great food and terrific service. Our waiter Arron was the best, very nice young man and very attentive. This was our first visit but we cant wait to come back.

Laura Macias ..

Yelp
False advertising. They promote buy one get one free on uber eats and then don't deliver. They say because it was ordered incorrectly. As if a customer is supposed to know their policies automatically.
google avatar

Patrick R.

Yelp
The food is amazing, as well as the experience to cook it ourselves. But the service sucks! We've been several times, and the servers kinda rotate for who brings what, so we didn't ever have the same server coming back to check on if we needed anything. They sort of disappear and forget about basic stuff like drink refills, etc.. We get left stuck, looking for someone to bring us more napkins, etc... The price is kinda high given the crappy service. There are definitely better places to go.

Juan Carlos A.

Yelp
It was a pleasure to be served by Daniel. He has a tremendous service attitude. We were very well served by him. Thank you very much.
google avatar

Jenn T.

Yelp
tried gyukaku today! first off, the food is just okay. nothing too spectacular. the restaurant itself looked clean, the only thing that sucks is that you have to circle the entire restaurant to go to the restroom if you're placed on the right side. if anything the star of the show is the quality of the meat. since it was my first time, i wanted to give everything a fair chance and opted for the supreme menu option. some of the most notable items i had are the chili and yuzu beef, duck breast, and chili cucumber. the other sides are very lack luster. our server was AMAZING so that's why I'm giving this place a 4 star review instead of 3. would i come here again? yes. am i planning on anytime soon? no.
google avatar

Rex C.

Yelp
They should change their name to " 3.00 up charge for everything" lol or "Nickel and dime are us" lol I have never been more up charged before in my dam life! But got dam it was worth it! First of the server tried to sell my on all you can eat for like 35-45.00 and said you get 90 minutes lol I was like bro we are on lunch so he pulled out the lunch menu 15.95 each times 3.00, 3.00, 3,00, 3.00, 3.00, 3.00, etc. you get my point. 15.95 each ended up at 67.00 with tip lol Now back to the best part, the food: I really wish I could've taken pics but it was a business luncheon it would've been kind of awkward and weird so I didn't take any pictures but let me tell you the food is absolutely five stars and absolutely amazing!. All of our beef chicken pork was so damn good. Seasoning to the max. I mean the seasoning they use was so damn good! Fulll of flavor. You pick your preseasoned meat and they drop it off for you to cook it. Lol I am not sure why we even tip as we cook our own dam food! Lol. The beef garlic was was amazing! 3.00 up charge lol. Up charge kings! But food is great. Kind of cool to grill your own food too. I'll definitely be back! I need some more 3.00 up charges I. My life. Pic attached hahahaha

Yelp
Food is fantastic, but service is always VERY slow. We usually have to repeat orders a several times.
google avatar

Courtney B.

Yelp
Love coming here! Every location is consistent. The server Khoi was wonderful! I wish I can eat here every day.
google avatar

Geraldine L.

Yelp
Han was very attentive and intuitive to our needs at the restaurant. He made us feel at home and comfortable with our visit today. I will definitely ask for him when we come back to Gyu-Kaku again

Monica C.

Yelp
We went today after many times of visiting and today was been more disappointing to say the least. We ordered beer and a set menu with our server. Over the course of the meal, he told us of things that are not available: Japanese sausage, cucumber, and eventually that the bathrooms were not working. Most of it was fine, the bathroom comment towards the end of meal made me concerned for other guests that may have arrived later than us and may be the bathroom later. In the beginning of our set menu, we received salads. Upon me eating my salad, I noticed a green colored bug, possibly a beetle, that fell into it's back just next to my plate. I'm assuming it's from the salad but we can't say for sure. Immediately grossed out, I called a server over and pointed at the bug, and this server called my server to inform him of what is happening. The server that's not ours proceeded to kill the beetle, and with me fearing the beetle was in the salad, we decided not to finish the salad and I requested a new plate. They obliged and gave me more napkins and asked where the beetle was specifically. Cool. No manager ever came to check in on us. I would at least like for someone to check in on us since our server kind of brushed it off the rest of the evening. He additionally was barely attentive to us after this happened. And at the end, nothing was discounted. Not asking for a full comp of anything but maybe just kind of think of our experience as patrons of your establishment.
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
The food is good. Not much of it. $60 meal for two (not including drinks etc) and I left hungry. But it was good. I stopped eating white rice two years ago but was so hungry I ate it. The bathroom was kinda nasty too. One faucet and one stall not working. Our waiter was nice when he was around but that was seldom. He was over seated I think. The prime rib and the bulgogi type but called something else were my favorites of the meats. The salad was fantastic. Amazing dressing. S'mores were a fun touch at the end of the meal.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
Our first time at Gyu-Kaku was very enjoyable. The servers were all very kind and Huan was especially attentive, helpful and friendly. We ordered a few different meats (Sirloin, Hirami, Prime Kalbi short rib & Yaki-Shaib beef in sweet soy tare), mushroom medley, garlic noodles, Matcha Tiramisu and Matcha Mochi. We enjoyed all the meats but felt the garlic noodles needed spice-- otherwise, we had an excellent time. Don't forget to ask your server to switch your grill plate while grilling!
google avatar

Jiovani R.

Yelp
First time here; and definitely not the last time! First time we cook for ourselves and it was definitely a cool experience! We loved the experience and the awesome ambience. Very spacious and clean restaurant. I'd highly recommend for anyone to try it. Customer service was great :)
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
We wanted to go and experience the place. Our server was victor and we could tell he was a bit busy, we were first timers and nothing was explained to us so finally when we did catch him we got alittle out of him, we also didn't get any plates or napkins lol but it's okay! we did the 4 people menu- it comes with all types of meats and flavors and food! It was yummy and very different. The cooking experience was fun as well, there was so much left over though. We did go for my friend birthday and he gave her some vanilla ice cream with chocolate and marshmellows which was different. We did make a reservation and was a little late but we were able to get seated. the menu was very overwhelming though. They try to social distance and they do check temps before going jn.
google avatar

Karina N.

Yelp
We had our Galentine's celebration here last month! It was so much fun and we definitely enjoyed the food! It wasn't our first experience at this restaurant but it was at this location. The staff was great! Especially one gentleman who was picking up the tables and offered us a glass of water while we waited for a table and my friend was choking! Thank God for him! We ordered the group order. I love this place! We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Leah D.

Yelp
Food was great, service was great. Prices for 2 can start as low as $65 for 2 apps, a soup or salad, 5 different meats and a dessert. The variety is nice and you get a ton of food. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Shawn A.

Yelp
Have visited this place many times and always enjoyed it. They recently added an All you can eat option vs a La carte. We always go for the ultimate as it pretty much includes anything they have. Some of our favorites are the fried bacon chips, Karrage avocado salad, duck breast, angus beef ribs and the prime short rib. There are a tons of options that are great here so you can't go wrong.

Michelle F.

Yelp
Sigma waiter, his name is Huan, He is the best waiter there, if you go there look for Huan 100% Food is so good because Huan is our server. The mood is nice on the place, especially with Huan. He gave us free wipes to clean our hands after a good meal.
